Background / History

Hongjun was an ancient Innate Great Power whose reputation was established during the Ferocious Beast Calamity. Before his enlightenment, he cultivated near Jade Capital Mountain and possessed the Chaos Treasure Creation Jade Plate 30.

He came to Kunlun Mountain after sensing a master-disciple connection with the Three Pure Ones. Laozi and Yuanshi accepted him as their master, but Tongtian refused, wishing to pursue a higher cultivation first. Hongjun nevertheless appreciated Tongtian's intelligence, composure, and stable foundation, and continued to treat him favorably 30 31.

During the Dragon-Han Tribulation, Hongjun brought Tongtian with him, tested his understanding of the Primordial World's general trend, and revealed that unseen forces were driving the Three Clans toward catastrophe. He guided Tongtian toward the battlefield, where Tongtian ferried remnant souls and accumulated Heavenly Dao Merit 31 32.

Hongjun organized Yang Mei, Qiankun Ancestor, and Yinyang Ancestor to eliminate Rahou. The campaign proved costly: Qiankun and Yinyang fell within the Immortal Slaughtering Sword Formation, while Yang Mei escaped. Hongjun ultimately used the Creation Jade Plate to break the formation and survived Rahou's final attack through Tongtian's intervention 40 44.

After Rahou's death, Hongjun took seventy percent of the Heavenly Dao Merit and used it to unify his three corpses. Before entering seclusion, he shared his understanding of the Dao of the Origin with Tongtian and promised the Three Pure Ones another opportunity after his emergence 45.

Hongjun later attained Dao as a Saint and held sermons at Purple Cloud Palace in the Outer Chaos. He taught the Three Corpses Severing Method, distributed Primordial Violet Qi, and repeatedly attempted to recruit Tongtian, who consistently refused to abandon the Primordial Great Dao 51 55 63 71.

After merging with the Heavenly Dao, Hongjun sought to establish Heavenly Dao supremacy over the Earthly Way. His attempts to confine Houtu within the Six Paths of Reincarnation were resisted by Houtu and Tongtian; he ultimately retreated rather than risk catastrophic damage to the Primordial World 90 92 107. Following the revival of the Human Dao, he accepted that the Heavenly, Earthly, and Human Daos should develop together and entered seclusion 113.

Appearance

Hongjun first appears as a tall, elderly Daoist with an ancient, profound aura. His outwardly simple and unadorned appearance conceals overwhelming cultivation 30.

  • Tall figure with the appearance of an old Daoist 30
  • Ancient and profound aura 30
  • Calm, largely unreadable expression when confronting others 30 90

Personality

Hongjun is patient, observant, and highly strategic. He tests Tongtian's temperament and insight rather than immediately forcing him into discipleship, recognizing his potential even after repeated refusals 31 32 51. He also plans major confrontations carefully, seeking allies against Rahou rather than recklessly pursuing him after an initial clash 36 40.

His priorities shift sharply after his integration with the Heavenly Dao. He becomes more authoritative and inflexible, treating the Earthly Way's growth as a threat to Heavenly Dao supremacy and attempting to restrict Houtu's freedom through force 90 105. Even so, he remains pragmatic: he compromises when continued conflict could collapse the Primordial World 92.
