Background / History

Indra was originally the intended heir to Hagoromo’s Ninshu, but became its castoff. After Hagoromo died, Indra led his followers against those of his younger brother, Asura. When his faction was disadvantaged, he sought senjutsu at Ryūchi Cave. He single-handedly eliminated the Nine-Headed Snake Sage and its Snake Demons on the White Snake Sage’s behalf, creating a debt she later repaid by assisting Sasuke 157.

Indra created hand seals, making chakra use systematic and enabling the development of a structured system of techniques. He continued inventing and refining ninjutsu into old age. He also conceived of opening the body’s eight chakra gates, but died before testing the idea 339.

According to Asura, the martial school Indra founded emphasized techniques at the expense of cultivating the heart. Asura blamed this shift for encouraging militarism and diverting Ninshu from its original purpose. Their conflict continued after death through their chakra’s reincarnations for roughly a thousand years 312 366.

Indra values strength, independence, and personal supremacy. He rejects peace founded on love and cooperation as a doctrine that weakens people, instead arguing that the strong should rule. His Infinite Tsukuyomi is intended to impose a “culture of strength,” not merely offer an escape from reality 317.

His pride is rooted in perceived rejection and abandonment. He tells Naruto that his life taught him to depend on no one and refuses partnership because he believes there can be only one king. Asura later argues that Indra, having been strong from the beginning, could not understand the needs or experiences of the weak 359 372.

Despite his arrogance, Indra is an observant and adaptable combatant. He retreats from an unwinnable fight against his regenerating copy, identifies weaknesses in Obito’s abilities, and recognizes inventive teamwork even when it threatens him 302 325 330 363.

He can sincerely respect opponents without abandoning his convictions. Guy’s realization of the Eight Gates excites him, and he honors their agreement by ending the Earth-Piercing Nails attack. Black Zetsu recounts the reincarnation cycle and offers to revive Indra through one of his living reincarnations. Indra chooses Sasuke, the nearer candidate. Meanwhile, Naruto retrieves a fang from the summoned Nine-Headed Sage Snake so Orochimaru can recover blood left by Indra’s ancient battle 298.

Sasuke refuses Indra’s bargain and attacks, but Indra’s senjutsu-powered arrow leaves him gravely injured. Black Zetsu’s parasitic control forces Sasuke to resurrect Indra. Chiri’s Death Butterfly Reflection then creates a regenerating copy of Indra, prompting the original to withdraw rather than continue a futile fight 301 302.

Samsara Grotto and the Ten-Tails

Indra opens the hidden dimension containing Hagoromo’s burial site and Asura’s remains. He resurrects Asura, defeats him, and absorbs his power before sealing him inside Planetary Devastation 309 310 311.

After summoning the Demonic Statue and White Zetsu army, Indra accepts Minato’s offer of Kurama’s Yin half, then attacks him. Obito and Asura intervene, but Indra critically wounds Obito’s soul. The Ten-Tails completes its revival, allowing Indra to become its jinchūriki 316 317 325 326.

God Tree and the Allied Shinobi

Madara and Kakashi confront Indra while the released Ten-Tails evolves. Their teamwork forces him to sacrifice an arm to escape Kamui, but they are overwhelmed by his life-draining dōjutsu and enormous Susanoo 327 328 329 330.

Indra absorbs the God Tree and activates Infinite Tsukuyomi. The allied shinobi resist through Obito’s resurrection cycle, reincarnated Guy clones, Madara’s evolved Limbo, and finally Guy’s own Eight Gates assault. Betrayal and Kaguya’s Resurrection

Naruto, Sasuke, Obito, and Madara combine their Susanoo and tailed-beast powers against Indra’s berserk avatar 344 345 346.

Indra has already recognized Black Zetsu’s scheme and sealed him after Infinite Tsukuyomi. A-Juan frees Zetsu because Naruto’s plan requires Kaguya’s resurrection. Zetsu subsequently forces Indra’s transformation into a Ten-Tails, allowing Kaguya’s Ten-Tails to devour him and restore her with greater power 347 348.

Final Battle and Death

Indra reasserts control over Kaguya’s exhausted body and rejects Naruto’s offer of cooperation. He incapacitates Obito, moves the battle between dimensions, and confronts the reunited group in the desert 359 363 364.

The allies extract Kaguya’s tailed-beast chakra, sever and transfer the Ten-Tails’ connections, and restrain Indra. Black Zetsu burns away Indra’s will and chakra to free Kaguya. Mortally wounded, Indra refuses another offer of belonging, acknowledges Naruto, and begins a final resurrection technique for the future world 365.

Indra uses the remaining power to restore Kushina. He declines Asura’s plea for reconciliation and asks Naruto to give his Rinnegan to Asura’s other reincarnation. He dies stating that his soul will dissipate completely 366.
