Background / History

Madara belonged to the Warring States generation and fought Hashirama Senju. After his defeat, he obtained Hashirama’s power and eventually awakened the Rinnegan. Already nearing death, he secretly transplanted the eyes into the young Nagato, expecting Nagato to resurrect him through Rinne Rebirth 3.

He selected and manipulated Obito to advance the Eye of the Moon Plan. His involvement extended to Rin’s tragedy: Naruto later reveals that Madara placed a seal on her heart, after which she deliberately died by Kakashi’s Lightning Blade. Madara also cultivated an unconscious Hashirama clone using stolen flesh and the Demonic Statue 3 176 200 220.

His plan rested on the Uchiha Stone Tablet, which he believed described a path to peace through Infinite Tsukuyomi. Black Zetsu had altered the tablet and presented himself as Madara’s will while actually serving Kaguya Ōtsutsuki 200 212 231.

Appearance

Madara first appears in Warring States-era armor, with long hair, black combat gloves, and the cracked skin of an Impure World Reincarnation body 81.

  • Hashirama’s face over his heart: Present in his modified reanimated body and retained after his return to life; disappears by his later Rinnegan transformation 82 183 332.
  • Bare chest: After his resurrection, he remains bare-chested regardless of the weather, openly displaying Hashirama’s face 223.
  • Changing eyes: Uses reanimated Rinnegan, a stolen Byakugan, Sasuke’s transplanted left eye, and eventually paired tomoe-bearing Rinnegan 171 190 236 266 332.
  • Sage markings: His Freeform Sage Art markings initially appear on Hashirama’s face on his chest 223.
  • Susanoo color: His chakra avatar is sky-blue or azure 172 181 328.

Personality

Madara is fiercely proud and resists submission even when cooperation would be easier. He dismisses Kabuto’s claim to understand his strength, refuses the White Snake Sage’s demand to kneel, and rejects reincarnation as an explanation that should define his identity. Nevertheless, he can tolerate humiliation for a practical advantage, including learning Tobirama’s Flying Thunder God to counter Naruto 82 172 198 201.

Combat is both his chief pleasure and his measure of others. Naruto’s ingenuity initially exhilarates him, while Hashirama remains his favorite opponent. His enthusiasm does not prevent careful analysis: he prepares counters to Kamui, exploits opponents’ attachments, and pressures Sasuke until his ocular power fails 88 171 172 227 374.

His ruthlessness coexists with increasingly visible personal attachments. He protects the villagers who sheltered him during his amnesia, later accepts Naruto and Obito as comrades, and quietly takes responsibility for Sasuke’s Netherworld sacrifice by teaching Sarada without withholding Uchiha skills 267 361 519.

Abilities & Skills

Ōfutonō

A new dōjutsu developed through his Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan. It enhances techniques without needing to be actively cast 84 145.

  • Amplifies ninjutsu, taijutsu, and ocular techniques beyond their ordinary limits 84.
  • Its awakening requires development after reaching Eternal Mangekyō; Madara warns that advancing too quickly can leave such an ability unawakened 145.

Rinnegan and Six Paths Techniques

Madara develops his command of the Six Paths after his first defeat by Naruto 88.

  • Human Path: Extracts Mū’s soul and attempts to remove Naruto’s soul in close combat 88 119.
  • Deva Path: Uses Planetary Devastation to enlarge and manipulate a meteor while trapping Obito 171.
  • Tengai Shinsei: Summons enormous meteors, later combining the technique with added-weight manipulation 86 118 328.
  • Naraka Path: Transfers his soul into his preserved remains to restore genuine life without Rinne Rebirth 183.
  • Reanimated-eye limitation: His imitation Rinnegan cannot summon the Demonic Statue. He circumvents this by controlling the Hashirama clone embedded within it 171 176.

Limbo: Border Jail

Produces shadows in an invisible plane with the same strength and abilities as Madara himself 328.

  • Uses four shadows with his paired Rinnegan, later increasing the number to eight 303 374.
  • Shadows can manifest Susanoo and intercept attacks as large as Ten-Tails Tailed Beast Bombs 328 345.
  • Naruto’s Rinnegan can see them; attacks without Six Paths power cannot affect them 303 328.
  • Can substitute a shadow for his own death, surviving Kaguya’s All-Killing Ash Bone and gaining a period of attack immunity 350 361 374.
  • Their recovery interval creates openings, while Six Paths attacks can destroy them 306 374.

Susanoo

Madara’s Susanoo progresses from skeletal defenses to a flying Perfect Form and eventually Ultimate Form 120 345 374.

  • Wields regenerating greatswords, twin blades, and Yasaka Magatama 120 172.
  • His Wood Clones can each manifest Susanoo, allowing coordinated barrages from thirty avatars 171 172.
  • Can armor a Wood Golem or combine his armor with Obito’s around the Demonic Statue 121 181.
  • Heaven and Earth Blade: His Ultimate Form joins a great blade’s hilt to its sheath to create an exceptionally long divine weapon 374.
  • Its defenses are not absolute: Naruto temporarily takes control of it, Tsunade breaks through it, and Indra destroys it 120 191 329.

Wood Release

Hashirama’s power gives Madara an extensive Wood Release arsenal 3 82.

  • Advent of a World of Flowering Trees: Creates a forest that releases poisonous pollen; he can control the concentration to incapacitate rather than kill 84.
  • Wood Clones: Uses them for concealed attacks, decoys, and independent Susanoo deployment 118 172 373.
  • Wood Dragon: Restrains targets and drains chakra; can be strengthened by surrounding flames 121 373.
  • Wood Golem: Challenges Perfect Susanoo and can be covered with Susanoo armor 120 121.
  • True Several Thousand Hands: Becomes available through senjutsu and serves as one of his largest battlefield constructs 223 227 306.
  • Gate of the Great God: Uses enormous torii gates to pin opponents 227 267 303.

Senjutsu

Madara studies all three great sage traditions before developing Freeform Sage Art 191 201 212.

  • Masters Shikkotsu Forest’s senjutsu and Ryūchi Cave’s Frenzy Sage Technique exceptionally quickly 191 201.
  • His initial living-body reserves are limited: one use of True Several Thousand Hands nearly exhausts his sage power against the enhanced, reanimated Hashirama 227.
  • Five Elements Protection: Unleashes lightning, water, fire, earth, and wind from the five faces of his enormous wooden construct 306.

Transplanted Ocular Abilities

Madara adapts rapidly to eyes taken from other shinobi 190 267.

  • Byakugan: Provides exceptional vision while his own eyes are absent 190.
  • Amenotejikara: Discovers position-swapping through Sasuke’s six-tomoe Rinnegan; exchanges a hostage with a statue and later turns Hashirama’s sealing gate against him 267.
  • Amaterasu: Uses Sasuke’s transplanted eye to attack Kabuto and Sasuke during their escape 236.
  • Moga Bera: Calls down an extremely fast indigo lightning pillar through Sasuke’s ocular power 270.

Mobility, Soul Techniques, and Combat Strategy

  • Flying Thunder God: Teleports to marked targets, incapacitates Tsunade, and later sends Hashirama to a distant island. Tobirama exploits a moved marker to trap him in the deep sea 172 191 227 236.
  • Spirit Transformation Technique: Retains control of his extracted soul and returns it safely to his body 119.
  • Izanagi: Escapes the Gate of the Great God at the cost of sight in his right eye 183.
  • Elemental combinations: Creates fiery whirlwinds with Fire and Wind Release and enhances Susanoo attacks with flames 86.
  • Close combat: Catches Sasuke’s sword wrist, disarms him, and identifies his difficulty fighting without his dominant left hand 84.
  • Opponent analysis: Times a sustained Susanoo-and-pollen barrage around Kamui’s intangibility limit and anticipates a concealed dōjutsu with an underwater Wood Clone deception 171 172.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Uchiha Gunbai: The clan’s treasured heirloom, forged from meteoric iron and God Tree wood. It passes through Obito, Naruto, and Sasuke before Madara uses it again; Naruto’s Truth-Seeking Orb Rasengan finally destroys it 119 120 373 375.
  • Scythe: Carries one during his confrontation and negotiations with Naruto 271.
  • Summoning Scroll: Deploys shuriken fitted with explosive tags during his postwar fight with Sasuke 373.
  • Black receivers: Immobilize Tobi and transmit chakra to control the unconscious Hashirama clone within the Demonic Statue 172 176.
  • Technique scroll: Obito uses a scroll attributed to Madara containing an unfinished Tobirama technique intended to establish a blood-brother relationship 102.

Relationships

  • Hashirama Senju — Former sworn enemy and dearest friend; his favorite opponent. Hashirama repeatedly seeks reconciliation and later helps retrieve Madara’s soul from the Netherworld 121 227 519.
  • Izuna Uchiha — Younger brother. Sasuke’s appearance reminds Madara of him 84.
  • Naruto Uzumaki — Rival who repeatedly defeats him, sponsors his Mount Myōboku training, and ultimately becomes a trusted comrade. Naruto explicitly selects Madara as someone capable of facing future enemies alongside him 88 121 212 230 308 361.
  • Obito Uchiha — Chosen successor and manipulated agent, later an uneasy ally. Their relationship evolves from coercion and betrayal to Madara acknowledging his reliability as a comrade 3 172 176 361.
  • Black Zetsu — Supposed embodiment of Madara’s will, actually Kaguya’s agent. Alters the Stone Tablet, contaminates Madara’s preserved body, and steals his cultivated sage power 200 212 231.
  • Nagato — Unknowing recipient of Madara’s original Rinnegan and intended instrument of his resurrection. Uses Rinne Rebirth for Konoha’s dead instead 3 82.
  • Kabuto Yakushi — Reanimates Madara to influence Sasuke. Madara rejects his authority and ultimately breaks his control 81 82 88.
  • Sasuke Uchiha — Younger clansman whom he brutalizes and later robs of an eye; subsequently fights beside him against Indra and Kaguya. Sasuke eventually accepts a Netherworld obligation to secure Madara’s release 84 236 345 350 519.
  • Sarada Uchiha — Disciple. Madara teaches her the Uchiha’s skills without reservation, though his criticism of her combat control remains severe 519 524.
  • Tobirama Senju — Longstanding antagonist whose techniques Madara nevertheless learns. Tobirama’s deep-sea teleportation trap nearly kills him 172 236 264.
  • Ali — Cares for Madara after her family rescues him from the ocean. Their affectionate familiarity persists into the later tournament 262 495.
  • Katsuyu and Tsunade — Victims of his coercive pursuit of senjutsu. He takes Tsunade hostage to force Katsuyu’s cooperation, earning the sage’s warning of consequences 191.
  • Kakashi Hatake — Recruits him for an early attack on Indra. Kakashi’s protection and insistence on teamwork earn his respect, although Madara insists on leading 326 328.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Reanimation and the First Battles with Naruto

Kabuto summons Madara through Mū to rekindle Sasuke’s anger. Discovering that neither Obito nor Nagato has fulfilled his intended resurrection plan, Madara decides to act independently. He seeks out Sasuke, overwhelms him, offers instruction, and violently removes his reattached left arm when Sasuke gives up fighting 81 82 84.

He then pursues Naruto to reclaim the Nine-Tails and Rinnegan. Naruto wins their ocean battle by trapping him beneath the sea with Planetary Devastation, but Mū’s rescue enables his escape. Rather than dismissing the defeat, Madara becomes eager to improve his use of the Rinnegan 86 88.

Their second major clash begins with an attack on Amegakure. Naruto counters Madara’s giant constructs through combined secret techniques, possession, sealing, and chakra absorption. Black Zetsu extracts Madara after Naruto deliberately stops short of undoing his reincarnation 118 119 120 121.

Alliance with Obito and Return to Life

Unable to reclaim his eyes alone, Madara pressures Obito into renewing their alliance. He nearly defeats him through a carefully prepared counter to Kamui, then uses the captured Tobi as leverage to secure cooperation 171 172.

The pair absorb the Eight-Tails into the Demonic Statue and challenge Naruto in the Land of Lightning. Their joint arsenal includes 108 Wood Golems and the two-colored Susanoo-armored Outer Path: Demonic Statue Tribulation. After their defeat, Madara restores himself to a living body and begins seeking senjutsu 176 179 181 183.

Sage Training and Rejection of Infinite Tsukuyomi

Madara obtains Shikkotsu Forest training through hostage-taking and Ryūchi Cave training through defiance. The White Snake Sage reveals his connection to Indra and raises questions about the history he trusted. Recognizing Black Zetsu’s attempt to keep him away from the toad sages, Madara goes to Mount Myōboku anyway 191 198 201.

The Great Toad Sage’s account of Kaguya exposes the Stone Tablet’s alteration. Madara also learns that Naruto requested his training because he might help defend the world against an external threat. He remains to develop Freeform Sage Art, then destroys the Uchiha Shrine and Stone Tablet, abandoning Infinite Tsukuyomi without abandoning his desire to surpass Naruto 212 217.

Reunion with Hashirama and Black Zetsu’s Betrayal

At the River of the Undying, Madara changes his intended target from Naruto to the resurrected Hashirama. Outmatched by Hashirama’s enhanced reanimated reserves, he exploits his friend’s concern for the Flying Nimbus and escapes through a deceptive handshake and Flying Thunder God 223 227.

Black Zetsu later immobilizes Madara using spores planted in his preserved remains, drains his sage power, and throws him from the battlefield. Madara subsequently takes Sasuke’s left eye, but Tobirama turns his teleportation technique against him and strands him beneath crushing ocean pressure 231 235 236.

A-Ban and the Land of Water

Ali and her family rescue Madara while fishing. He awakens without his memory and lives under their care. When his identity reasserts itself amid an attack on the village, he uses his newly awakened six-tomoe Rinnegan to kill the invaders and protect the survivors 262 266 267.

After killing the organ-trafficking doctor Chimukawa and destroying the stolen Byakugan, Madara decides to eliminate the threat at its source: the Land of Water daimyo’s residence. Hashirama warns that this could destabilize the country, but Madara restrains him and continues toward the capital 267.

Reconciliation with Naruto

Naruto proposes returning Madara’s original eyes once he awakens his own Rinnegan, followed by a fair contest whose loser must accept the winner as leader. Their later duel pits Limbo and immense sage constructs against Naruto’s new ocular abilities and Ultimate Form Susanoo. Madara finally admits defeat in “Seal of Reconciliation” 271 303 306 308.

War Against Indra and Kaguya

Madara initially rushes ahead of the assembled forces, taking Kakashi with him to test Indra. Their encounter forces him to confront an opponent whose Six Paths abilities can destroy his Susanoo and threaten Limbo 326 328 329.

He later cooperates with Naruto, Sasuke, and Obito. The four combine their Ultimate Form Susanoo with Naruto’s enlarged Six Paths Kurama. Against Kaguya, Madara voluntarily exchanges places with Sasuke and uses a Limbo shadow to survive an otherwise fatal Ash Bone strike 345 346 350.

His bond with Naruto becomes openly cooperative: he accepts their struggle as preparation for external enemies and calls Naruto the “future savior” 361.

Postwar Rivalries and Netherworld Debt

Madara remains involved in Amegakure’s postwar meetings and anti-Kara planning, but his rivalry with Sasuke persists. A dispute over the cat Huahua escalates into a dangerous fight that Naruto interrupts; the intervention also destroys the Uchiha Gunbai 373 374 375 376 381.

During a later tournament, a Netherworld taboo from his youth causes his soul to be cast into the afterlife. Naruto, Sasuke, Hashirama, and Obito retrieve him, but Sasuke must become the Netherworld’s Tree Hunter and may return to the living world only one day each year. Madara expresses his unspoken guilt by becoming Sarada’s devoted teacher and arranging the Heaven Shinobi reunion for Sasuke’s annual return 519.
