Background / History

Orphanage and Temple service

Evan spent part of his childhood at the Holy Temple Orphanage. He enjoyed joining the temple cleaning because the children received sweets and sometimes cake afterward. As a priest, he continued cleaning by hand, now regarding it as spiritual practice 28.

He served at a Holy Temple in Valentine, listening patiently to worshippers’ worries and offering advice. After seeing Mulan near the harbor, he initially mistook the former officer’s bloodstained presence and sharp gaze for signs of a vicious man. Hearing Mulan’s account of the Princess Niseriel incident changed his opinion: he recognized a capable officer with a strong sense of justice 10 12 22.

Friendship with Mulan

Mulan first approached Evan for help with persistent nightmares. Evan offered assistance in return for devotion rather than money, then explained the Otherworld, the Siren’s transformation ritual, and the growing supernatural danger surrounding the mortal world 12 13.

Repeated visits turned their relationship from priest and prospective believer into friendship. Evan valued Mulan’s wit and fresh approaches to theological questions; Mulan quietly tested Evan’s sincerity before coming to trust him. Around Mulan, Evan could relax the solemn image he maintained before his congregation 27 28.

The Count’s Estate

When the Count’s Estate began slipping into the Otherworld, Mulan sought Evan’s help. Evan immediately brought cases of holy water, despite having little practical experience. His first real exorcism cleared the estate hall, strengthened Mulan’s sword, and helped the surviving guests escape 33 34 35.

Grasping the Crystal Brooch drew Evan and Mulan into the Ancient Fiend’s reach. Evan freed them with holy power, then trusted Mulan’s dangerous baiting plan despite fearing that his friend had been corrupted. Their coordinated use of Purification allowed them to escape and seal the brooch in holy water 36.

The encounter placed severe strain on Evan’s mind and body, prompting the Temple to protect and treat him. After recovering, he concluded that devotion alone was insufficient against demons: he also needed greater power 39 44.

Research and the Sacred Mountain

In Digo, Evan helped Mulan save the possessed Keli, discreetly searched Temple records for eye-related relics, and studied mystical history alongside him. Their research exposed troubling gaps between the Temple’s ideals and its conduct. Evan also helped prepare payments for the families of Mulan’s former soldiers 45 46 49 50.

Evan was selected for the Sacred Mountain’s highest-order baptism, an opportunity he said was offered to no more than three people each year. He expected the experience to elevate his soul and faith, followed by extensive training toward becoming a bishop. His departure was scheduled for the morning of February 28, and he intended to choose the Valentine Diocese 59 60.

The ceremony instead exposed him to an Evil God within the sacred light. Evan screamed that the being could not be the True God, mutated, and attempted to flee. The presiding archbishops attacked him as a blasphemer while other recipients also began suffering mutations 77.

Death and its aftermath

Mulan later fought an armored monster without realizing it was Evan. Near the end of the battle, Evan identified himself as “Good Head” and tried to warn Mulan about the truth above the Holy Temple. As Evan’s remaining awareness faded, Mulan drove Fang into his forehead, killing him and drawing the remaining gray mist into the blade 69.

The Temple subsequently reported Evan missing from the Sacred Mountain and his soul flame extinguished. Mulan’s grief and suspicion of the official account helped drive his decision to create an organization devoted to “true light and hope”—Dawn 72.

Later accusations complicated the investigation: black-cat familiars blamed Evan for their downfall, and Gaormos invoked his name while describing stolen magic and possible manipulation. These claims did not establish Evan’s responsibility, but they gave Mulan further leads concerning his friend’s fate 152 158 160.

Resurrection

Mulan eventually revealed that Evan’s soul remained preserved inside Fang. Although this made resurrection possible, later examination showed that the soul had been severely damaged by the Evil God and Holy Light. Dawn’s allies gathered materials, research, and labor for a large ritual in the World Tree Secret Realm 291 295 298.

Using Evan’s notebook, Fang, the Book of Dawn, the World Tree, and a vast magic array, Mulan and the Raven Queen restored him as a living human rather than merely placing a spirit in a body. Evan initially awoke in panic and begged to be killed, but recognized Mulan and recovered his memories. Mulan introduced him to the assembled allies as Dawn’s Bell-Ringer, Sir Evan 299.

His return demonstrated that resurrection was possible under exceptional conditions—not that Dawn members could routinely escape death. Preserving the soul and obtaining the Raven Queen’s intervention remained major limitations 300.

Dawn and the Hillkin uprising

After his resurrection, Evan traveled with Phoenix and Reno while tracking Taylor. He entered Hillkin during the workers’ uprising, reported events through a raven messenger, and initially observed without intervening. Dawn’s Observer system sought information on holy relics and opportunities to obtain them 303 304.

When supernatural attacks threatened the rebels, Evan helped Phoenix ambush a court wizard and warned the Workers’ Party that negotiations would not protect them from the kingdom. He coordinated Dawn’s reinforcements and authorized a decapitation strike against the royal army, but the operation failed and the siege continued 306 307 308 309.

During Hillkin’s collapse, Evan led a breakout and used purifying fire against soldiers and Steam Tank crews. Revealing his magic brought artillery onto the group, forcing a rapid escape. Approximately three hundred survivors later gathered in a ravine, where Evan welcomed Moor and witnessed his awakening 310.

Evan subsequently reunited with Taylor, reassured him that he was human, and supported Mulan’s effort to recruit him as an investigator of the Holy Temple. He remained involved in Dawn’s work against holy relics and the approaching chaos 313 314.

Appearance

  • Before mutation: An energetic young priest who maintained a solemn, sacred bearing in public 28.
  • Mutated form: Violent fleshy growths emerged during baptism; by his confrontation with Mulan, he had become a huge armored monster capable of sprouting tendrils from its wounds 69 77.
  • Resurrected form: Human again, with blond hair and a changed eye color. His face remained recognizable to Taylor, despite those differences 299 303 313.
  • During major magic use: His eyes turn gold and flames ignite around him 310.

Personality

Evan is sincere, compassionate, and attentive to ordinary people. He listens gently to worshippers, helps Mulan without demanding payment, and risks himself to save a possessed man whom Mulan might otherwise have to kill. His anger during Keli’s exorcism is directed at the Evil Spirit, not its victim 12 22 45.

His priestly solemnity conceals humor and a practical streak. He teases Mulan, admits his childhood enthusiasm for cleaning came from sweets, and says he would disguise his face and beat up a villain if he witnessed cruelty privately—even though the Temple officially avoids secular affairs 28 59.

Trust in Mulan survives situations that threaten Evan’s faith and reason. He waits for Mulan’s signal before attacking the Ancient Fiend, and later retains enough will during mutation to bring his friend a warning. After resurrection, his concern for justice becomes direct action: he supports the Hillkin rebels while openly acknowledging their weakness and the possibility of defeat 36 298 308 310.

Abilities & Skills

Holy Power and Purification

Evan channels Holy Light through prayers and holy water, using it to cleanse supernatural influence 34 36.

  • Produces radiant blasts that disperse black mist and temporarily separate an area from the Otherworld 34.
  • Coats Mulan’s Silver Sword with holy water to increase its effectiveness against monsters 34.
  • Uses close-range Purification to badly burn the Ancient Fiend 36.
  • Expends holy power with each purification; during the estate incident, he does not know his maximum number of consecutive uses 35.

Blessings and Exorcism

Evan combines prayer, sacred implements, and physical restraint to protect people or expel spirits 34 45.

  • Blesses estate survivors so they can escape the Otherworld’s influence; they must avoid panic and proceed directly to his temple 35.
  • Uses the Book of the Holy Temple against Keli’s possessing spirit 45.
  • Improvises a headbutt when the ritual reaches a dangerous impasse 45.

Awakened Physique

Physical Awakening improves Evan’s stamina and reflexes beyond ordinary human limits 35.

  • Carries heavy crates of holy water without difficulty 35.
  • Acknowledges that improved physical ability does not give him Mulan’s trained combat proficiency 35.

Post-Resurrection Fire and Power Purification

As a Dawn Magic Wielder, Evan uses flame-like power in combat and against holy power 306 310 330.

  • Releases an expanding ring that causes flames to erupt from enemy soldiers and tank crews 310.
  • Burns a telegram to ash in his hand 306.
  • Strips a Holy Knight of the holy power binding him to Holy Light. The knight dies because his body is already extensively damaged by its erosion 330.
  • Envelops the extracted holy power in flame before drawing it into his body 330.
  • Heavy magic use exposes his position to enemy supernatural detection 310.

Research, Persuasion, and Field Leadership

Evan’s pastoral experience gives him considerable skill in addressing frightened or suspicious groups 308.

  • Compares Temple records with Mulan’s research into mystical history 49.
  • Distracts a court wizard while Phoenix approaches undetected 307.
  • Coordinates reinforcements, battlefield operations, and evacuation during the Hillkin uprising 306 309 310.
  • Uses Dawn’s raven-messenger network to report events 303.
