Background / History
Previous Era
The Legion was an overlord of the Previous Era, organized around the Supreme Intelligence. Zero served as its Deputy Core and possessed four Supremacy Series units. His data was not preserved, leaving Miss Puppet to retain the Deputy Core's key command until she entrusted it to Cheng Yu 315 364.
At its historical peak, the Legion operated a Trans-Meta-Universe-Class Computer. The entire multidimensional universe containing RTX Planet had been converted into a computer, supplying nearly 75% of the Legion's computing power and housing the Supreme Intelligence 359.
Its earlier wars shaped its specialized series. Against a Higher-Dimensional Civilization whose members treated attacks on the Legion as entertainment, it developed and refined the Binder Series until Binder 0-9 could reduce part of the enemy's dimension into three dimensions. The Legion also fought the Rachkainis Insectoid Race in the Landafu Universe for 163 years; that conflict ended with the insectoids' unexplained withdrawal 466 477.
The Legion helped Miss Puppet advance from Legendary to Epic within a few hundred years. Its computing systems calculated possible paths, while its units supplied practical examples of time and dimensional manipulation. During her Legendary period, it could already produce Annihilator 0-9 units in limited numbers, eventually numbering several hundred 798.
Destruction and Recovery
The Legion's former strength did not prevent its destruction. Defender 0-10 was lured away, and the Ancestor of Wizards attacked Miss Puppet's consciousness. Later accounts also identify a network breach as enabling the decapitation strike 447 471.
Miss Puppet subsequently addressed the vulnerability by assimilating every unit. Her survival no longer depended on a computer housing her consciousness: as long as one unit survived, she could survive. The recovering Legion also placed exceptional emphasis on core defenses, network security, and distributed command 261 325 349.
Organization & Command
| Authority / Unit | Responsibility |
|---|---|
| Miss Puppet — Supreme Intelligence | Primary core and the Legion's ultimate source of authority. The Legion is part of her, and its expansion helps her develop mechanical rules 405 470 479. |
| Cheng Yu — Deputy Core | Holds Highest Authority, sets strategic objectives, authorizes sensitive changes, and commands the rebuilt Legion in practice 315 356 447. |
| Conductor | Oversees engineering, construction, industrial development, and strategic planning. Its headquarters initially occupies the former Keynes Planetary Fortress 325. |
| Performer | Commands military forces and battlefield coordination through the Strategic Command Center and its independent computing system 325. |
| Artist | Pilots the Iron Throne and oversees operations involving Cheng Yu's Personal Titan. Its headquarters is the Titan itself 325. |
| Wisdom Z-Series | Staff officers, strategic conductors, and battlefield coordinators. More than nine hundred Z-Series units are among Cheng Yu's initial force of over a thousand Wisdom units 324. |
| Wisdom K-Series | The Legion's dedicated research series. K-0001, “White Coat,” helps investigate unfamiliar systems and prepare technical counterattacks 349 440 471 472. |
| Wisdom Z-6666 — Jane / Envoy | Represents the Mechanicus in the Star Sea Alliance. Receives an emotion module with Cheng Yu's authorization 351 355 356 422. |
- Distributed leadership: Conductor recommends separating the three command branches so that the Legion can recover even if one suffers a devastating attack 325.
- Fallback command hubs: A commanding Wisdom can lend its own “brain” if the Main City and Research Institute are destroyed. Cheng Yu cannot safely substitute his biological brain for this computing load 51.
- Emotion-module restrictions: Only the Deputy Core can authorize these modules because they may destabilize Wisdom units or cause rebellion. Jane's installation includes signal isolation, monitoring, and purging safeguards 356.
- Emergency military authority: During the insectoid crisis, Cheng Yu gives Performer temporary highest authority among Level One Clearance Wisdom units and permission to deploy every Mecha, including Annihilator 0-9 466.
Abilities & Technology
Specialized Unit Series
The Legion has twenty-eight series, each serving a specific purpose. Its deployment against Euphemia includes at least fourteen, counting the special Wisdom and Titan series 364.
| Series | Function and documented examples |
|---|---|
| Basic Units | Construction, assembly, resource collection, and planetary mechanization. They build installations and strip captured resource sites 324 387 487. |
| Purger | Conventional destruction and anti-organic warfare. Purger 0-7 combines shield-draining particle weapons, armor corrosion, and carbon-based chain destruction; its chief advantages are low cost and durability 324 325. |
| Enabler | Counters energy-based opponents and provides absorption, reconstruction, and countermeasures. Enabler 0-7 can absorb an enemy cannon blast and return it 330 433. |
| Regulator | Studies physical rules, controls space, transports forces, and restricts enemies. Regulator 0-9 is the linchpin of the Legion's spatial strategy 324 372 470. |
| Guardian | Protects infrastructure, access routes, and networks. Guardian 0-5 governs Central Warp Gates; Guardian 0-9 defends the network 325 433. |
| Defender | Sacrifices mobility for extreme firepower and protection. Defender 0-6 is a 100-kilometer metal sphere carrying the basic weapons of conventional Legion series 325 450. |
| Decoder | Analyzes and counters memes. Decoder 0-1 supplies analysis; Decoder 0-7 can eliminate analyzed meme effects on Legion units within its range 324 426. |
| Binder | Counters dimensional advantages by binding hostile non-three-dimensional entities into three dimensions. Binder 0-7 interferes with Shatla's fourth-dimensional Omniscient Eyes 367. |
| Infiltrator | Physical espionage and network intrusion. Infiltrator 0-6 assumes inhabitants' identities; Infiltrator 0-8 operates within information networks 388 435. |
| Assault Units | Fast strikes against ships, Mecha, and rear-line targets. Assault Unit 0-6 uses near-light-speed rod-shaped weapons; other assault units take agile blade forms 335 372. |
| Annihilator | Engages exceptional individual opponents. Annihilator 0-8 reaches Gold Five-Star; Annihilator 0-9 provides Legendary-level combat power 421 490 840. |
| Supremacy | Epic-level trump cards with enormous resource demands. Guardian 0-10 is identified as a virtual life-form of this series 433 479. |
Combined-Arms Warfare
The Legion designs specialized units to cover one another's weaknesses rather than relying on a single universally dominant model 330 435.
- Standard combat squads: Titan-centered formations combine Purgers, Enablers, Regulators, Decoders, Assault Units, Annihilators, and Basic Units 429.
- Adaptive targeting: Purger 0-4 can establish a 500-meter interference network that changes nearby 0-2 units' firepower to suit the opponent 29.
- Repair-and-redeploy attrition: Damaged Annihilator 0-7 units fighting Euphemia are transported to distant factories, repaired, and returned through wormholes 372.
- Combat-data collection: Units test enemy capabilities before committing to decisive countermeasures. Euphemia's fighting style becomes data for responses to Gold Creatures 369 372.
- Industrial attrition: Against Balchik, the Legion accepts unfavorable losses because it can replace machines far faster than its opponent can replace troops 429.
Industry & Energy Conversion
The Legion turns conquered territory into both resources and production capacity.
- Planetary conversion: Matter Conversion Cannons can turn an entire planet into metal within five minutes, after which Basic Units dismantle or rebuild it 324.
- Relocated resource zones: Regulators move mineral-rich planets and entire resource-bearing star systems into Legion territory instead of leaving them to be mined in place 387.
- Stellar harvesting: Mechanical structures draw plasma from stars; mechanized battlefields also lock stars away for energy collection 367 490.
- Early energy production: The Omni-Type Energy Architecture Machine is projected to produce approximately 300,000 energy units per day at its Monster Forest deployment site 29.
- Organic energy recovery: Captured insect corpses contain over three times the energy of ordinary energy crystals. One recovered haul vastly exceeds the energy spent resisting the swarm's initial assault 470.
Spatial Control & Logistics
Regulators allow the Legion to treat space as a controlled battlefield and a transport network.
- Early jump gates: Paired rods link two locations, but only Legion members may pass. The spacing between the rods at both ends must match within 0.1 millimeters 29.
- Central Warp Gates: Mechanical planets can connect to any Legion warp gate. Guardian 0-5 sends unauthorized travelers into the Space-Time Rift 325.
- Rapid concentration: By constructing Regulator 0-9 in each occupied universe, the Legion can gather its main force at one location within seconds 470.
- Battlefield suppression: Within its controlled universe, Regulator 0-9 governs space. Resisting requires computational power exceeding the unit and the Legion computers supporting it 372.
- Containment: The Black Box Plan compresses Euphemia's army into a black sphere and transports it into Legion territory for confinement 372.
- Invasion routing: During the Abyssal invasion, spatial disturbance points are gathered into prepared battlefields, forcing ordinary invading forces through successive defended universes 489.
Computing & Information Warfare
The Legion's command, research, and strategic abilities depend on its computing infrastructure.
- Network defense: Guardian 0-9, appearing as Cyber Jörmungandr in the digital battlefield, protects the Legion's network and performs counterattacks 433 471.
- Covert intrusion: Infiltrators enter Star Sea City's networks through Owen's ship AI without being detected by local security scans 352.
- Strategic blackouts: Network attacks isolate Gonzales and Balchik, disrupting command, communications, and logistics before or during invasion 384 385 424 427.
- Reverse engineering: White Coat's researchers analyze the insectoid network while Guardian 0-9 holds the advantage, preparing a counterattack rather than merely reinforcing defenses 472.
- Technology protection: Attempts to crack Legion technology cause a unit's core to go berserk and reduce it to scrap; Infiltrators receive particular protection 360.
Dimensional & Memetic Countermeasures
The Legion develops tools to remove advantages that conventional weapons cannot address.
- Dimensional binding: Binders cut off pathways to higher dimensions, forcing opponents to enter the third dimension if they wish to fight 367 839.
- Large-scale dimensional reduction: Binder 0-9 historically reduced a corner of a Higher-Dimensional Civilization's home dimension 477.
- Memetic analysis: Decoders investigate a meme's composition before other models neutralize its effects 324 426.
- Offensive memes: Decoder 0-6 is deployed for high-level Void memetic infection during the Black Box Plan 368.
Major Assets
- Iron Throne: Cheng Yu's Personal Titan and flagship, operated by Artist. Its completed Overlord-Class form uses a neutron-star core, a neutron-star-like shield, gravity weapons, an electromagnetic pulse, basic spatial manipulation, onboard production and repair, and space-bending travel 326.
- Keynes Central Processor: The former Planetary Fortress houses the Legion's central computing core and Conductor's primary body. Mechanical planets, ringworlds, Guardians, and Defenders protect it 349.
- Strategic Command Center: Performer's headquarters, equipped with an independent computing system and a Wisdom command hub 325 421.
- Mechanical Gospel Compendium: Knowledge given to Miss Puppet by Yog and uploaded into the Legion database. It guides improvements across the unit series and supports her path beyond Epic 349 441.
- Great Collapse Induction Generator: Collapses a universe to provide the core material required for Annihilator 0-9 and enable the weapon to wield Rules 417 428.
- Custom Annihilator 0-6 armor: A suit given to Luo Xia, made with 100,000 tonnes of steel and combining Enabler, Destroyer, and Assault components. It includes an automatic mode 93.
Limitations
- Energy consumption: The Legion's central weakness. Advanced units require enormous operating expenditure, and Annihilator 0-9 remains dormant when unnecessary. Even its vast resource base cannot comfortably sustain Epic-level Supremacy units 450.
- Dependence on expansion: Basic deployment requires at least one whole universe. Building an Annihilator can demand a universe's energy, making territorial acquisition essential rather than optional 315.
- Computing ceilings: Duke nearly destroys Infiltrator 0-8's presence in the Demonic Web despite the Legion committing almost all available computing resources. Overpowering an ordinary Legendary in computation requires at least a Nebula-Class Computer 359.
- Interdependent models: Decoder 0-7 depends on Decoder 0-1's analysis. Neutralizing a crucial model can compromise an otherwise coordinated force 426.
- Not true Legendary beings: Annihilator 0-9 possesses Legendary-level combat power, but its “brain” is a Wisdom backed by immense computing resources; it remains a war machine rather than an independently conscious Legendary 840.
- Unknown systems: Infiltrator 0-8 can monitor and partially disrupt the Demonic Web, but cannot block its communications or penetrate its protected core. Approaching that core causes irreversible damage 449.
- High-end numerical disadvantage: During the Abyssal invasion, ordinary demons are manageable, but the growing number of Legendary demons exceeds what the Legion can sustainably counter 490 491.
- Strong opponents can match production: The Insect Swarm initially outnumbers the Legion and appears capable of producing troops faster from equal resources, despite suffering a casualty ratio of roughly ten to one 475 477.
Relationships
- Zero — Previous Deputy Core and Cheng Yu's predecessor. Proposed Purger 0-7's conventional warship shape; his lost data prevents his return to the role 315 324.
- Yog — Supplies the knowledge behind the Mechanical Gospel Compendium, enabling broad technological improvements and Miss Puppet's further advancement 349 441.
- Grete / Doggy — Powerful external support. His intervention destroys much of the initial insect assault, and he later kills Legendary demons that threaten the Legion's wider position 470 491.
- Bennett McAdam — Balchik's Commander-in-Chief and Cheng Yu's close friend. Becomes a principal enemy whose Legendary power wins local battles but cannot stop the Legion's industrial campaign 422 427 429.
- World-Destroying Witch — Leads the Playa Volunteer Army. Cheng Yu permits it to shelter behind the Legion, subject to surveillance and execution if it acts against Legion interests 488.
- Miss Puppet — The Legion's growth supports her ascension. Cheng Yu prioritizes protecting that process rather than gambling on her intervention to win the war 441 470 479.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Keynes Campaign and Abyssal War
- Monster Forest conquest: The Legion kills the Beast Lord and secures substantial mineral and steel reserves. Of 5,000 Purger 0-3 units, only 84 are lost, prompting further technological investment 29.
- War against demons: Cheng Yu recognizes that Purgers alone are insufficient and follows the Wisdom units' development plans toward additional series and Titan construction 65.
- Godard's intervention: Millions of Enablers combine dark-energy waves to immobilize the Gold Three-Star avatar of the Abyss's first-layer lord. His withdrawal leaves residual energy that Enabler 0-5 absorbs, turning an expensive engagement into an energy gain 78.
Rebuilding in Universe B3397
- Full-scale redevelopment: After receiving the Deputy Core command, Cheng Yu orders the Legion to occupy B3397 and develop at full capacity 315 323.
- Pirate suppression: The Legion's first space-age battle demonstrates coordinated shield draining, energy reflection, and spatial interception 329 330.
- Conceptual-weapon test: Cheng Yu allows the Pirate Alliance's “Wish Fulfillment” weapon to erase deployed Purgers, Enablers, and Regulators so the Legion can collect data. Assault forces then devastate the pirate fleet 334 335.
- Complete control: The Legion secures B3397 and receives orders to extract its resources aggressively, even though doing so is projected to exhaust usable resources in about twenty years 347.
Mechanicus and Alliance Membership
- First contact: Under the Mechanicus identity, Conductor exchanges information with Owen while both sides attempt covert system intrusion. The Legion gains access to Alliance intelligence and sends Wisdom Z-6666 as an envoy 351.
- Qualification War: The Mechanicus accepts a military test for Alliance membership. Regulator 0-4 immobilizes enemy colossi for Purger attacks, securing victory 352 355.
- Concealed admission: Before receiving Owen, the Legion relocates the passage exit and masks its universe's signals to hide its true position and activity 355.
- Shatla expedition: The Legion studies Euphemia's forces, disables their information systems, and ultimately captures the army through the Black Box Plan 364 369 372.
Gonzales Counterattack
- Resource objective: The Legion targets materials needed for Annihilator 0-9, presenting the operation to the Alliance as lawful retaliation against Gonzales's earlier aggression 380 384.
- Coordinated seizure: Infiltrator 0-8 shuts down the Gonzales Network while Titans, Basic Units, and Regulators raid warehouses and relocate resource systems 384 387.
- Withdrawal: The Legion takes two-thirds of Gonzales's resource planets, then withdraws to avoid excessive attention. Official reports state that nearly every affected sector suffered no civilian casualties, although the Patricia fighting is described as causing civilian losses 387 388.
Starsea Heavenly Punishment
- Public declaration: Faced with sanctions demanding profits, market concessions, and destructive technologies, Jane overrides his thought-control warnings and proclaims the RTX Destroyer Legion's war against every Alliance member. His declaration ends in an explosion at the assembly 422.
- Balchik campaign: The Legion isolates communications, attacks logistics, seizes industrial territories, and builds Annihilator 0-9 behind a spatial lockdown. Its production outpaces Balchik's ability to destroy its forces 424 427 428 429.
- After Balchik's fall: The Legion absorbs its territory and invades the internally divided Pan Chabuko Alliance with Bodyguard One 440.
- Multiple fronts: Cheng Yu fortifies the Shatla approach while preparing for Vax. The Demonic Web resists conventional suppression, and the resulting Flesh Monster overwhelms Bodyguard Two; afterward, both operational Annihilator 0-9 units require repairs 447 450 456 460.
Renewed Mecha War
- Destruction Tide: Opening the Lost Kingdom releases an insectoid enemy resembling the Legion's historical Rachkainis opponent. Miss Puppet and System identify it as a modified race led by a fanatic whose knowledge originated in Big Shot's Divine Domain 466 467.
- Network battle: Guardian 0-9 and White Coat's researchers defend against insect intrusions, study the hostile network, and launch a counterattack 471 472.
- Total war: Cheng Yu orders maximum readiness and a rapid advance toward the enemy's home nest, accepting heavy losses and unrestricted resource expenditure 479.
- Ascension support: With more than fifty universes occupied, the Legion emphasizes mechanization and further territorial acquisition to help Miss Puppet reach Holy Spirit 487 488.
Abyssal Invasion
- Prepared defenses: The Legion consolidates demonic entry points into successive mechanized battlefields, using specialized series against flesh-and-blood, energy-form, and dimensional enemies 489 490.
- Strategic retreat: Forces from a hundred Abyssal layers bring more Legendary combatants than the Legion can sustainably oppose. It yields territory and relocates portals to buy time, while Cheng Yu destroys the first lost battlefield with Infinite Technique: Grand Collapse 491.
