Background / History

Life Ten Thousand Years Earlier

In his previous life, Lou Yunxiao lived in Red River City with his mother, Bai Wanru. After his father died, he forced himself to become stronger and more emotionally reserved so that he could protect her. Ning Ke estimated that he had already reached the Tribulation Stage; a later spar showed him evenly matched with Fox Lord Jiu Yuan despite being barely a hundred years old 81 83 86.

He rescued Ning Ke, then trapped in a small white fox’s body, from two hostile cultivators and took him home. After learning the fox’s written name, he called him “A Ke.” He protected and indulged the fox, while worrying about Bai Wanru’s increasingly dangerous attempts to forge the Buddha Lotus Lamp 80 81 82.

Lou sought other powerful cultivators to oppose the Great Demons and organized Red River City’s defenses before joining the campaign. After Bai Wanru’s death, he took up her lamp and fought with Twin Swords empowered by Heaven’s Way. That power altered both the swords and his constitution 88 90 94 95 96.

His recovered memories reveal that, after sealing the Great Demon, his Sea of Consciousness was invaded. He detonated himself before Ning Ke, leaving only a sachet and an apology. Although his sacrifice served the greater good, it broke his promise to protect Ning Ke and left lasting emotional wounds 150.

Flowing Cloud Sect Massacre and Demon Abyss

Lou’s present life was shattered by the destruction of the Flowing Cloud Sect. Blinded, wounded, and stripped of his Golden Core, he vowed revenge before a Demon Clan subordinate kicked him over a cliff. Ning Ke secretly followed in the disguise of a beautiful woman, and both entered the Demon Abyss 2.

Ning Ke rebuilt his core and taught him how to balance orthodox cultivation with the devil path. Lou accepted the danger of corruption and persecution because he needed strength to avenge his sect. His Demon Soul River training established the foundations of this combined cultivation 4 6 7 8.

He came to regard his rescuer as an extraordinary benefactor. When Ning Ke invented a story about waiting for a lost beloved, Lou believed it and quietly withdrew from their usual sparring, concealing his disappointment through further cultivation 5 9.

Sword Sect and Sect Tournament

After returning to the Human Realm, Lou faced the Four Sects’ Trial and more than half a year of confinement in the Sword Sect’s Demon-Sealing Pagoda. Gao Ze defended giving him a chance rather than condemning him solely for demonic cultivation. When released, Lou remained under suspicion, although his powers had retained their balance throughout imprisonment 14 16 17.

Ning Ke reentered his life as A Ke, a devoted junior disciple. Their companionship helped Lou regain ordinary contact with others: shared sparring and instruction revealed his gentle, modest side, gradually easing the disciples’ prejudice 14 21.

At the Sword Tomb, Pale Silver chose Lou while Red Cloud chose Ning Ke. Lou subsequently reached late Golden Core and comprehended sword intent. He placed among the Sect Tournament’s top ten and revealed his sword intent against Zhuang Yusheng 22 29 34 35.

Secret Realm and Demon-Slaying Campaign

In the underground palace, a Great Demon sought to possess Lou. Lou sent another endangered disciple away on Pale Silver, then drove an ice sword into his own heart and shredded it to resist the takeover. He survived as a living-dead vessel, cold and without a heartbeat 42 46 66.

Ning Ke supported his recovery through spiritual-energy transfers and repeated extraction of his own heart’s blood. Lou advanced to Nascent Soul and became increasingly affectionate, asking for kisses, reassurance, and a future together 45 46 47 48.

After A Ke’s apparent death, Lou became emotionally vacant and relentlessly killed demons, including demonized fellow disciples. He regained his sight through the eyes Ning Ke had given him, yet still attacked Ning Ke’s Demon Venerable identity with intense hatred 58 64 65.

When Ning Ke returned as the monk Mingxin, Lou began testing his identity through familiar words, the sealed forehead mark, and foxfire resonance. Protecting Mingxin gave Lou a purpose beyond revenge. At Northern Tour City, he unleashed demonic power, absorbed enemy energy, and helped defeat the demons threatening the city 66 68 71 74.

Uncovering the Truth and Reconciliation

The reappearance of the Secret Realm at the Flowing Cloud Sect’s former site drew Lou back to investigate. He eventually learned that Nan Lou had devoured Lou Jing and used his appearance, and that the Demon Venerable was not chiefly responsible for the sect’s tragedy 75 106.

Lou also identified Ning Ke as the woman who had saved him in the Demon Abyss. Ning Ke admitted both the disguise and his feelings, but later disappearances intensified Lou’s fear of abandonment. After advancing to Mahayana, Lou saved a demon-slaying squad from Nan Shier, whose recognition further linked him to his ancient life 115 123 125 126.

His pursuit became coercive: he fought Ning Ke, deliberately accepted a chest wound to capture him, and kept him imprisoned at the Sword Sect. During that confinement, he also cared for Ning Ke, prepared meals, administered treatment, and thanked him for saving both Lou and the Flowing Cloud Sect disciples 137 148 152.

Jiu Yuan’s confrontation restored Lou’s memories of his ancient sacrifice and forced him to recognize the harm he had caused. Ning Ke ultimately chose reconciliation on his own terms, settling their past grievances and taking Lou with him. Lou later stepped down as acting Sect Master to accompany him 150 151 152 156.

Final Conflict and Modern Life

When Ning Ke revealed that their world began as an unfinished novel, Lou accepted being its protagonist without resentment. He thanked Ning Ke for entering his life and promised to search across worlds if Ning Ke returned home 157.

During the battle against the Sun God, Lou used chaotic power, ice armor, and two domains. He learned from the deity’s methods while fighting, and joined Jun Mo in shielding their companions from divine fire 164 165 167.

Afterward, he allowed Ning Ke’s soul to be returned to the modern world despite fearing permanent separation. Yu Tang warned that any future search must rely on Lou’s own strength and must not disrupt that world’s order through divine power 176.

Lou later appeared beside Ning Ke as a Buddhist Prayer Bead Spirit. He learned modern cooking, maintained the apartment, accompanied Ning Ke’s acting career, and transformed into prayer beads around his wrist during filming. At the main story’s end, he attended Ning Ke’s Best Actor award ceremony as his lover 185 192.

Appearance

Lou is repeatedly described as exceptionally handsome, with a tall, straight bearing likened to a pine and a cool, otherworldly presence 5 24 30.

  • Hair: Long black hair, often secured with a silver crown 24.
  • Eyes: Originally gray-blue; after receiving Ning Ke’s eyes, they appear dark red 42 45 58.
  • Clothing: Frequently wears white robes; wears a white suit at Ning Ke’s modern award ceremony 2 176 192.
  • Blindfold: Wears the moon-white sash Ning Ke gave him during his years of blindness 16.
  • Flame mark: Has a foxfire-associated mark over his heart 68.
  • Demonic aura: Excess absorbed energy can spill around him like corrosive black flames 75.

Personality

Lou initially presents himself as disciplined, restrained, and courteous. He accepts the consequences of devil cultivation even when his own people fear or imprison him. Despite his revenge-driven life, his gentleness and modesty become evident to the Sword Sect disciples once they know him personally 17 21 76.

His reserve conceals a strong need for affection. He treasures his benefactor’s ribbon, seeks Ning Ke’s praise after tournament victories, and becomes openly playful and clingy when demonic energy predominates. That change does not remove his capacity for cruelty in combat 21 34 45 71.

Love exposes his insecurity and possessiveness. He grows jealous of Zhuang Yusheng and other people receiving Ning Ke’s attention, and eventually admits that he would rather bind Ning Ke to him than watch him leave. His fear is sharpened by knowing little about Ning Ke’s origins or where to search if he disappears 31 32 104 108 123.

His later choices show greater consideration for Ning Ke’s freedom. He accepts the truth about Ning Ke’s missions, recognizes his own past selfishness, and permits his return home despite profound jealousy and grief. In the modern world, he expresses devotion through patient companionship and domestic care, while continuing to discourage romantic rivals 157 176 185 192.

Abilities & Skills

Combined Dao and Devil Cultivation

  • Cultivates spiritual and demonic energy simultaneously through an unusual constitution formed by destruction, reconstruction, river training, and transformation into a living-dead vessel 6 66.
  • Must maintain balance between the two energies; excessive demonic power risks instability and loss of control 6 45 74.
  • When demonic energy exceeds spiritual energy, his demeanor becomes unusually cheerful, childlike, and uninhibited 71.
  • At peak Mahayana, his combined reserves amount to twice an ordinary cultivator’s capacity at that realm 137.

Demonic Energy Absorption

  • Refines demon souls from the Demon Soul River to strengthen himself 9.
  • Absorbs a demon attempting to possess him and refines it within his body 66.
  • Drains enemies through his divine swords or direct contact with severed limbs 71 126.
  • Absorbing too much can leave him unable to retract his corrosive aura, endangering nearby companions 75.

Swordsmanship and Sword Intent

  • Had already trained with swords for a decade before his Demon Abyss sparring with Ning Ke 9.
  • Defends precisely against attacks despite blindness 20.
  • Independently comprehends sword intent at Golden Core, an exceptional achievement among younger cultivators 29.
  • Uses Twin Swords in rapid exchanges, flying-sword travel, and battles against higher-realm enemies 42 71 126.
  • Adapts during combat, including using doubles, mist, ice armor, and deliberate injury to counter Ning Ke’s time abilities 137.

Ice and Foxfire

  • Uses his ice spirit root to lower temperatures and freeze targets 20 22.
  • Freezes or boils increasingly large stretches of the Demon Soul River during training 9.
  • Commands foxfire originally supplied from Ning Ke’s essence, with its demonic aura removed 22.
  • Uses that flame to warm companions, melt ice, and coat his blades 22 24 71.

Domains

  • Extreme cold domain: Awakened through the divine godhead and compatible with his ice spirit root. Immobilizes Nan Shier, an early Tribulation-stage Great Demon 126.
  • Power-stealing domain: Briefly steals the Sun God’s power, halving the force of one incoming attack 164.
  • Group protection: Expands his cold domain alongside Jun Mo’s to shield others from divine fire, at a rapid cost to their energy 165.
  • Limitations: The Sun God’s power counters the Snow Dragon-style cold domain. Lou compensates by studying the deity’s use of chaotic power during battle 164 167.

Chaotic Power

  • Possesses chaotic power at Mahayana through his divine godhead, surprising cultivators who associate it exclusively with gods 123.
  • Uses it to strengthen barriers, armor, domains, and sword attacks 122 137 164.
  • Channels it through the Twin Swords to multiply their released power 155.
  • His use of chaotic power and Heaven’s Way Qi helps Qianyuan Continent’s Heaven’s Way regain physical form 156.

Supporting Skills

  • Reading by touch: Reads books and remembers page numbers while blind 47 48.
  • Emotional regulation: Memorizes the Clear Mind Heart Sutra left by A Ke 131.
