Background / History

Fox Lord of Qingqiu

Jiu Yuan is the Fox Clan’s only established Nine-Tailed Fox when Ning Ke appears as its newly born Saint. Nine-Tailed Foxes are born between heaven and earth rather than through ordinary Fox Clan births; Heaven’s Way names them, and they must endure trials before ascending to godhood. Ning Ke’s disappearance barely two days after his birth throws the clan into alarm 85.

Heaven’s Way visits Jiu Yuan in a dream and explains that Ning Ke has gone to find the destined savior. He instructs the Fox Clan to support any cultivator Ning Ke brings back. When Lou Yunxiao arrives seeking help with Ning Ke’s origins and transformation, Jiu Yuan initially insists that Ning Ke remain in Qingqiu, testing Lou’s attachment to him 85.

Jiu Yuan then brings them to a demonic-power-rich hot spring, where Ning Ke can safely gain speech and human form without abruptly breaking Heaven’s Way’s seal. While Ning Ke soaks, Jiu Yuan duels Lou from noon until evening. Their draw convinces him that Lou is strong enough to protect Ning Ke, and he permits them to leave together 86.

Ancient Demon War and Dormancy

During the attack on Red River City, Jiu Yuan destroys living-dead victims with blue foxfire and arrives with powerful fox-clan reinforcements. He heals Ning Ke, urges Lou Yunxiao to continue fighting, and explains the importance of the Twin Swords to their chances of victory 94 95.

Taking his full nine-tailed form, he helps draw Nan Lou and the Great Demons away from the city. Ten days of fighting leave him gravely weakened. He later intercepts an attack intended for Lou Yunxiao, suffering a wound that makes his eighth tail turn transparent and forces him back into human form 96 97.

After Lou destroys his own divine soul to prevent Nan Lou’s escape, Jiu Yuan sacrifices half his divine soul through a forbidden art to gather Lou’s scattered soul and preserve his chance of reincarnation. The effort sends Jiu Yuan into a sleep lasting ten thousand years. Ning Ke guards him for years and keeps the Fox Clan hidden so that he can rest undisturbed 97 145 151.

Awakening and Reunion

Jiu Yuan awakens on Fox Mountain, irritated by sandalwood incense and bewildered that A You and A Li have become adults. On learning how long he has slept, he immediately asks where the Holy Son is 145.

Working with Yin Feng, he mobilizes the Demon Clan to search for Ning Ke. The search leads them to the Sword Sect, where Jiu Yuan throws Lou Yunxiao into a dungeon wall, checks Ning Ke for injuries, and apologizes for his long absence. Ning Ke embraces him and insists that his sacrifice leaves him nothing to apologize for 149 151.

Jiu Yuan refuses to entrust Ning Ke to Lou again, arguing that Lou’s noble intentions do not erase his failure to protect him or the trauma caused by his ancient self-detonation. His opposition softens when Ning Ke freely chooses Lou. Although another protective outburst destroys their Flying Ship, Jiu Yuan ultimately accepts their commitment and witnesses their wedding 150 152 159 160.

Divine War, Sacrifice, and Restoration

Before the Divine War, Jiu Yuan promises to protect the Qianyuan Continent’s Heaven’s Way. During his fight with Jiang He, his mist is dispersed by the enemy’s third eye, and he suffers severe chest and arm injuries. Heaven’s Way emerges from his storage space to save him and is killed; Ning Ke reverses the disaster and sends Jiu Yuan to obtain treatment for the old man 156 164 165.

While Heaven’s Way is being treated, Jiu Yuan secretly tells him to divide his essence and hide one part. This preserves the continent’s support even if the visible portion is killed and deceives the Sun God into believing Heaven’s Way has been eliminated 174.

Jiu Yuan returns to battle after only basic treatment. When repeated time reversals cannot prevent the Sun God from killing him and Heaven’s Way, he urges Ning Ke to stop exhausting himself and buy time for the Supreme God to notice the conflict. He then uses Fox Spirit Detonation, badly injuring and poisoning the Sun God at the cost of his own life 166 169 170.

Heaven’s Way catches a wisp of Jiu Yuan’s scattered soul and seals it inside his bonded tobacco pipe. Supreme God Wei Yuan uses that remnant to gather his soul, making his restoration possible. Jiu Yuan later reunites with Ning Ke in the modern world 174 190.

Modern World and Later Life

Jiu Yuan arranges identity cards, resident registrations, and a family cover story so the companions can approach Ning Ke in his original world. He obtains an extravagant Rolls-Royce through an exchange of equal value and assigns himself the role of eldest brother 182 183.

His estate contains multiple villas, a horse-racing track, stadium, golf course, cinema, and other recreational facilities. He tells Ning Ke and Ning Xiao to leave their rented apartment and live there permanently 192.

After returning to the Qianyuan Continent, he finds that several thousand years have passed and his fox cubs have grown into cultivators approaching his strength. He later ascends alongside Ning Ke and their companions 194.

Appearance

  • Human form: Bewitching features and a handsome face; frequently wears loose or revealing clothing that leaves his chest exposed 145 151 152 155.
  • Height: Slightly taller than Lou Yunxiao 222.
  • Fox traits: Nine tails, foxlike eyes, and claws; his tails can spread behind him while he remains in human form 96 152.
  • Clothing: Wears red robes during the battle against Jiang He and retains an unconventional style in the modern world 164 192.
  • Parallel-world manifestations: Bares sharp fangs and develops demon markings extending from his forehead toward his eyes when enraged 208.

Personality

Jiu Yuan is rebellious, sharp-tongued, and gruffly affectionate. Heaven’s Way is one of the few figures he willingly obeys, though he regularly insults the old man while expressing genuine concern for him. He dislikes sentimental displays, yet his reunion with Ning Ke nearly brings him to tears 85 149 155 156.

His protectiveness centers on promises and their consequences. He respects Lou Yunxiao’s courage and service to others but refuses to excuse the harm Ning Ke suffered merely because Lou acted for the greater good. Despite his explosive temper, he ultimately accepts Ning Ke’s right to choose his own partner 150 159.

He enjoys elegance, spectacle, and teasing. He considers a fan more suitable than a sword for a beautiful fox, organizes an ostentatious modern-world entrance, and expresses growing approval of Lou through an intimidating drinking invitation 87 182 222.
