Background / History

Xiaoxiao is an orphan raised by adoptive parents in Ning Family Village. Her home stands at the village’s western edge, and its residents include childhood friends and elders who helped care for her. Her biological parents remain unidentified, even to Ning Ke 25 45 97.

Her Golden Silk Wooden Token is not an accidental inheritance. After his journey ten thousand years into the past, Ning Ke records the talismans and formations bestowed on him by Heaven’s Way inside the token and places it in Xiaoxiao’s swaddling clothes. Its contents therefore preserve knowledge connected to the ancient sealing of the Great Demons 45 97.

In the modern world, Ning Xiao identifies Xiaoxiao as both a character she wrote and the other half of her soul. Heaven’s Way had previously noticed a faint Otherworldly Aura on Xiaoxiao without understanding its source 155 189.

Appearance

  • Height: Approximately 160 cm during the Sect Tournament; by the main-story ending, she is slightly taller than the 170 cm Ning Xiao 34 192.
  • Resemblance to Ning Xiao: Their faces are identical enough for Ning Xiao to notice the likeness in a viral video and later describe looking at Xiaoxiao as looking into a mirror 183 188 189.
  • Complexion: Ning Xiao remarks on her exceptionally soft, smooth skin and praises her beauty 189.
  • Smile: Liuli describes her smile as sweet and says it makes her even prettier 74.

Personality

Early Xiaoxiao is cheerful, trusting, and playful. She enjoys Ning Ke’s attention, teases him about his laziness and defeats in sparring, and eagerly seeks his approval when she makes progress. Although initially carefree about studying, she becomes determined to prove that she has taken his lessons seriously 16 23 27.

Her affectionate manner changes sharply in combat. At the tournament, she becomes composed and direct, dismissing an opponent’s taunts before defeating him decisively. After losing her adoptive father, her determination hardens into a vow to destroy the demons; this hatred can override sensible warnings to avoid stronger enemies 34 61 70.

Xiaoxiao is protective of loved ones but vulnerable to guilt. She blames herself for Lou Yunxiao’s capture, worries that Ning Ke’s affection for her displaced the kindness owed to Ning Xiao, and initially struggles to accept reassurance. She is also shy about compliments and close physical contact, especially from people she does not know well 41 74 189 192.

Abilities & Skills

Swordsmanship

Xiaoxiao studies Gao Ze’s sword techniques and combines them with talisman attacks 34.

  • Defeats a much larger body cultivator through speed, swordplay, and explosive talismans 34.
  • Splits her sword into multiple blades to create a sword formation against mutated Carnivorous Red Willows 40.
  • Wields sword intent through Jinglan 70.
  • Reaches the Sect Tournament’s top ten, qualifying for the Qianyuan Secret Realm and a treasure selection at the Nine-Layer Heavenly Profound Pavilion 34.

Talismans and Formations

Ning Ke teaches her the knowledge recorded in the Golden Silk Wooden Token. He covers nearly every talisman and formation with her, though complete mastery requires more than simply understanding the lessons 24 34.

  • Deploys Explosion Talismans and multiple airborne talismans in battle 34 40.
  • Masters the rare Demon-Sealing Talisman, alarming demons who recognize its significance 72.
  • Reinforces the Metal Array during the Northern Tour City crisis 73.
  • Helps investigate traces of arrays at twelve attacked residences surrounding Northern Tour City 68.
  • Limit: Demon-Sealing Talismans are not an automatic victory against stronger opponents. Nan Shier escapes their effects by tearing away the skin to which they are attached 125.

Sword-Intent Domain

Her awakened domain amplifies sword intent and belongs to the same category as Gao Ze’s. Its manifestation is associated with her exceptionally steadfast heart as a sword practitioner 160.

Sword Flight and Utility Spells

  • Flies on Jinglan and can enlarge it to carry another person 124 189.
  • Casts an invisibility spell before taking Ning Xiao on a flight in the modern world 189.
  • Uses a Cleansing Spell while helping the injured Zhuang Yusheng 73.
  • Limit: The distance she can fly depends on her available spiritual energy 189.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Jinglan Sword — A sentient sword that chooses Xiaoxiao in the Sword Tomb. It initially chases her and nearly causes a collision; later, it serves as both her weapon and flying transport 22 124 189.
  • Golden Silk Wooden Token — Contains Heaven’s Way’s talisman and formation knowledge. Ning Ke takes custody of it after discovering that direct study can cause dangerous backlash, then teaches Xiaoxiao its contents gradually 23 24 97.

Relationships

  • Ning Ke / A Ke — Her chosen older brother, protector, and instructor. He provides her with a comfortable home at the Sword Sect and teaches her talismans and formations. She mourns A Ke’s apparent death before learning that he and the Demon Venerable are the same person 16 24 59 153.
  • Ning Xiao — Her creator, lookalike sister, and other soul half. Ning Xiao welcomes her into the family rather than treating her as a replacement or rival; their souls eventually reunite 189 193.
  • Gao Ze — Her Sword Sect master and swordsmanship teacher. He encourages her to judge Lou Yunxiao personally and later cautions her against deciding Ning Ke’s guilt without knowing the facts 16 34 59.
  • Lou Yunxiao — Her eldest senior brother. He saves her at the cost of being captured in the Secret Realm. Their shared grief creates distance, but she later comforts him during Ning Ke’s absence and calls him the person closest to her in the sect 41 61 132.
  • Zhuang Yusheng — A fellow talisman practitioner who becomes deeply concerned for her safety. He repeatedly shields her in battle; she, in turn, insists that she can fight beside him and does not want to see him hurt 27 72 125.
  • Adoptive parents — Raised her in Ning Family Village. She happily brings Ning Ke and Lou Yunxiao home for New Year; her father’s death later becomes a defining source of grief and resolve 25 61 132.
  • Little Sand Rat — A companion she protects in the Secret Realm. He attempts to drag her unconscious body to safety and later accompanies and comforts her 39 41 61 132.
  • She-She — A python companion who escorts her after Ning Ke’s rescue, assists against the Metal Array demon, and remains with her afterward 41 61 72 132.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Sword Sect and the Sect Tournament

Xiaoxiao enters the Sword Sect under Gao Ze and shares a courtyard with Ning Ke. His lavish care includes fine clothing, jewelry, and handmade modern-style plush toys. She initially distrusts Lou Yunxiao after he injures Ning Ke over a treasured ribbon, but becomes comfortable enough to accept his apology when he freezes her to prevent a collision in the Sword Tomb 16 21 22.

After receiving Jinglan, she begins learning the token’s contents from Ning Ke. She loses a talisman contest to Zhuang Yusheng in Nantong City but earns her brother’s praise for her effort. Her later tournament performance demonstrates the results of that training, placing her among the top ten contestants 23 24 27 34.

Qianyuan Secret Realm and Family Loss

While traveling through the desert with Lou Yunxiao and the little sand rat, Xiaoxiao encounters the Demon’s underground palace. Lou protects her from its overwhelming pressure and gets her out, but is captured himself. Ning Ke finds her unconscious, heals her, and directs her to warn the other disciples while he attempts the rescue 40 41.

Xiaoxiao continues monitoring the desert through the sand rats. When a tremendous disturbance occurs, she returns with other disciples and reaches the ruined palace after five days of travel 52.

After leaving the Secret Realm, she helps bury Ning Family Village’s dead and mourns her adoptive father. She also challenges Lou’s refusal to bury A Ke’s body, recognizing that his attachment to the ice coffin has become unhealthy 61.

Northern Tour City and the Demon War

During the Northern Tour City defense, Xiaoxiao finds the metal-element spirit stone and confronts a stronger demon despite orders to avoid such opponents. With She-She’s help and the Demon-Sealing Talisman, she kills it and reinforces the Metal Array, although her left hand is left badly injured 70 71 72 73.

She later shows the bearing of a team leader during the Nantong City emergency, taking the frightened Zhuang Yusheng ahead on Jinglan and helping rescue his father. The pair remain to fight the Tribulation-stage Nan Shier because their sealing talismans can contribute, but are badly injured before Lou Yunxiao arrives 124 125.

When Lou suspects Abbot Wujue, Xiaoxiao agrees to investigate the Buddhist Order with Qing Ru. After Wugou reveals Ning Ke’s identity to her, she reunites with her brother in tears and begs him not to leave again. She subsequently awakens her domain and fights alongside Zhuang Yusheng during the war 144 153 160 166.

Modern-World Reunion

Xiaoxiao joins the companions seeking Ning Ke in his original world. Their cover identities present her as the little sister of Jiu Yuan and Zhuang Yusheng. Curious about Ning Xiao, she secretly follows her for several days, then intervenes when hired thugs attack her 182 183 188.

After defeating the attackers together and giving police statements, the two discuss their shared soul and relationship with Ning Ke. Xiaoxiao explains that the visitors want to protect him and his family, not force painful memories upon him. Ning Xiao rejects her guilt over receiving his affection, welcomes her as another sister, and celebrates their connection with a flight aboard Jinglan 189.

Xiaoxiao helps bring Ning Xiao to the manor where the companions are gathered. Ning Ke reveals that his memories have returned, and the main story closes with the reunited family sharing dinner and taking a portrait 190 192.

Return-to-Qianyuan Extras

After Ning Xiao dies peacefully at ninety, her soul automatically merges with Xiaoxiao’s, making it whole. Xiaoxiao grieves deeply but resolves to live for both of them 193.

She later reunites with Ning Ke after his restoration in a new fox-bloodline body. The companions wait for him to catch up in cultivation before ascending to the Divine Realm together 194.

Parallel-World Captivity Side Story

In this alternate storyline, Xiaoxiao frees the tortured Demon Venerable from Lou Yunxiao’s dungeon to repay his kindness to her family, without knowing that he is A Ke. She treats his wounds, supports him despite his fear of dirtying her clothes, and takes him to the battlefield at his request 202.

She removes Lou’s curses at Ning Ke’s urging and reluctantly leaves him. Alarmed by his farewell, she turns back too late to stop his Fox Spirit Detonation. Wugou subsequently reveals his identity, and Xiaoxiao realizes that removing the life-preserving technique had unknowingly eliminated his last chance of survival 204 205 207.

She blames herself for failing to recognize and protect her brother. Even after Zhuang Yusheng shares the record of Ning Ke’s past and tells her that he returned to his original world, she remains withdrawn and enters prolonged seclusion, relying on cultivation and time to wear down her grief 208 213.
