Background / History

The Green Templars squad leader

The earlier William had fought for more than 190 years when Yi Feng joined his squad. He was approaching two centuries of service and had a long-standing friendship with Chapter Master Deyika, whose Terminator Armour he associated with several rescues from near death 3.

His first encounter with Orks left him determined never to enter battle under-equipped. Before the Atris deployment, he loaded his squad with so much ammunition that two places in their ten-man Drop Pod were occupied by supplies instead of warriors 3 4.

After Yi Feng’s confrontation with Mistanbol, William promised to teach him every skill he possessed, hoping to train a Chapter Champion. He later fought through the boarding battles aboard the Blessed Forest, but was among the comrades Yi Feng described as gone after the fighting. His influence survived in Yi Feng’s habit of carrying excessive ammunition and contingency weapons 11 17 18 19.

The William Family’s recruit

The later William grew up as the heir to a grand duke, receiving an intensive elite education with little time for play. To escape his family’s watchers, he dismantled toys for useful materials, collecting gold coins, an engine-sound player, elastic silk thread, and inconspicuous clothing 25.

His family opposed his participation in the dangerous trials. His grandfather’s stories, however, had taught him to admire an ancestor who fought beside Space Marines. During the psychic examination, William rejected the suggestion that he was merely a sacrifice for family prestige: bringing the family greater glory was also his own chosen ambition 27 29.

He subsequently rose through the Crimson Tide’s command structure. By the time his family learned he had become a Company Commander, they were holding increasingly lavish ancestral ceremonies to celebrate his achievements 89.

Personality

William combines battlefield confidence with a practical concern for preparation, resources, and obligations. He can dismiss a planetary army as an insignificant obstacle, yet remains attentive to suspicious ships, ammunition shortages, and an outstanding Strike Cruiser debt to the Grey Scar Chapter. A mysterious astropathic signal unsettles him enough to abandon loot and recall his entire force immediately 295.

His loyalty to ordinary people becomes especially clear when dealing with Herrick. Rather than accepting inherited rank or religious formulas as proof of conviction, he demands a choice between the officer’s crew and noble family—and accepts Herrick as a comrade only after he chooses the crew and his conscience 391.

He retains humor and affection despite centuries of losses. As a Dreadnought, he endures Xiao Lan’s teasing about his new body, but becomes overwhelmed when the transformed Yi Feng finally recognizes him 540.
