Background / History

Namekian Upbringing

Broly was born on Planet Vegeta with a battle power of 10,000. Lin Chen considered him both an extraordinary prodigy and a potential danger to the planet. Rather than kill or exile him, Lin Chen chose to care for him; the system rewarded that decision with Broly’s loyalty 5 6.

Lin Chen entrusted the one-year-old Broly to the Grand Elder and Nail on Namek. He also wished for the Tranquility Flute through Porunga, giving the Namekians a way to calm Broly’s berserk episodes. The flute prevented Namek’s destruction several times during the following five years 7.

Under Nail’s guardianship, Broly became cheerful and well-liked among the Namekians when calm. By the end of those five years, he could defeat a huge sea beast without losing control and proudly reported his progress to Nail 7.

Return to Planet Vegeta and Move to Earth

Broly returned to Planet Vegeta with Lin Chen, reluctantly parting from Nail and the Grand Elder. He protected Lin Chen from young Vegeta’s attack and later defeated four officers of the Turles Crusher Corps without killing them 11 12 15.

Planet Vegeta’s competitive culture did not suit him. Children repeatedly challenged him, recovered in Healing Devices, and returned for more fights. Broly withdrew to a secluded, Namekian-style house outside the capital, but Vegeta continued demanding rematches. Paragus sought Lin Chen’s help on his son’s behalf 26.

Lin Chen moved Broly to Kami’s Lookout, believing its quiet surroundings and Namekian resident would suit him better. Broly immediately recognized Kami as a Namekian, helping Kami discover his own origins 27.

Kami and Cooler’s Invasion

Broly became a candidate to succeed Kami. When Goku reached the Lookout after defeating King Piccolo, Broly tested him by requiring Goku to touch him. Goku could not pass, but his persistence impressed Broly and helped secure permission to train there 90.

During Cooler’s invasion, Kami appointed Broly as Earth’s new Kami before dying. Broly initially waited for Saiyan reinforcements because he feared losing control, but eventually intervened to help Bardock 182 184.

Bardock’s apparent death triggered Broly’s berserk transformation. He overwhelmed Cooler, destroyed the remaining invasion ships, and then attacked an investigating British army, killing the entire force. Goku and Vegeta could not stop him through combat; Mr. Popo finally calmed him with the Tranquility Flute 185 186 187.

Broly subsequently relinquished the position of Kami, overwhelmed by guilt for the people he had killed 216.

Learning to Control His Power

Bardock later foresaw Broly destroying Planet Vegeta and urged Lin Chen to execute him. Paragus objected, and Lin Chen refused to condemn Broly for an uncertain future. He instead accepted a five-year system mission to help Broly master his power 215.

Broly had already begun training against four regenerating clay duplicates in an isolated chamber. After roughly three months of continuous fighting, he was berserk again. Lin Chen subdued him with Dragon Fist, caught him as he collapsed, and promised to teach him control 216 217.

Lin Chen then arranged secluded training on a life-filled planet, prescribing meditation and Tree of Might fruit to strengthen Broly’s mind. Broly worried about the tree destroying the planet’s life and accepted the plan only after Lin Chen promised to restore the world with the Dragon Balls 218.

The training succeeded: Broly first gained control of ordinary Super Saiyan, then demonstrated a lucid Full Power Legendary transformation against Cell. Completion of Lin Chen’s Broly-related mission was later confirmed when Lin Chen’s acquisition of the lesser power of creation was explained 248 260 274.

Destruction Training and Interuniversal Battles

Whis selected Broly as a God of Destruction candidate and trained him in Beerus’s realm. When Beerus awakened, he tested Broly immediately. Broly’s serious response combined Legendary Super Saiyan power with destruction energy, damaging more than half the realm before Whis stopped the duel 343 344.

Broly later returned to Earth with Beerus and Whis after more than ten years away. In the Universe 6–Universe 7 competition, he defeated all five opposing fighters, including Cabba, Caulifla, Kale, and Hit. Against Hit, he unveiled the Destruction Form developed with Lin Chen’s assistance 347 381 382 385 386 387.

During the Tournament of Power, Broly pushed himself beyond exhaustion to protect Lin Chen from Jiren. He eliminated Kahseral and Toppo but lost control as his power escalated; Ultra Instinct Jiren then inflicted severe injuries on him 502 503.

Later Conflicts

Sent to assist Universe 6, Broly instead lost consciousness after touching a Saiyan with a dark-red aura, later identified in the conflict as Cumber. Once restored to his senses, he apologized to Lin Chen for the damage caused while he was out of control 537 539.

Against Hearts, Broly recognized Lin Chen’s concern for the other fighters and proposed Potara fusion. Their fusion, Lin Broly, broke Hearts’s gravity cages and destroyed the black hole trapping Jiren through raw energy 549.

Broly later volunteered to fight Dark Black Broly, seeing his counterpart as a reminder of what he might have become without Lin Chen’s guidance. His reason and destruction-infused attacks gave him the advantage despite their closely matched strength. Raised on Planet Vegeta after Bardock prevented Frieza’s destruction of the Saiyans, this Broly grew up without Lin Chen’s restraint or guidance. He awakened as a Legendary Super Saiyan against Cooler and King Cold, killed them, murdered the reigning Saiyan king, and took the throne 222.

As King Broly, he became an uncontrolled tyrant whose campaigns destroyed planets and killed countless people. His killing of Vegeta III helped trigger Vegeta’s Super Saiyan transformation, while Bardock foresaw his eventual destruction of the universe 222 223.

Vegeta and Bardock lured him to a wilderness planet and ambushed him with more than 200 energy-absorbing Android 19 units. The battle ended Broly’s threat, but destroyed nearly every android, killed Bardock, and left Vegeta barely alive. Vegeta returned as the new Saiyan king 223.
