Background / History

Su Family Childhood

Su Mianmian grew up in the Su Family, one of Peace City’s four great aristocratic clans. Her parents adopted Su Jiu as an infant, while Su Qingqing was born to her father and one of Madam Su’s maids. Mianmian treated Qingqing disdainfully because of her mother’s position, although Qingqing acknowledged that Mianmian had never physically bullied her 2.

When Su Jiu awoke after being bitten by a snake while rescuing Qingqing, Mianmian scolded her for risking her life. She nevertheless became one of Su Jiu’s most frequent visitors during her recovery 1 2.

The Su Family once arranged a marriage alliance with the Wenren Household involving Mianmian. When she was in her teens, the intended groom fell in love with someone else during his travels. The Wenren Household offered gifts and apologies, and the Su Family accepted the dissolution of her engagement. Much later, a Wenren representative attempted to distinguish that canceled engagement from the broader marriage agreement between the households 1443.

Azure Tide Sect Recruitment

Her spiritual-root test revealed superior-grade fire–wood symbiotic roots, drawing immediate attention from the sect’s disciples. She departed with Su Jiu and six other Su Lineage recruits, but burst into tears aboard the spirit boat despite her earlier excitement about joining the sect 2 5 6.

Mianmian was the first candidate to step onto the Heavenly Ladder. She overcame an illusion in which her parents refused to let her join the sect, but failed the second illusion, which exploited her fear of Qingqing turning Su Jiu against her. Passing the first illusion was sufficient for admission 7 8.

Hong Ling and the Second Elder both offered to take her as a personal disciple. Rather than choosing by their range of techniques, Mianmian asked who could provide the best fire cultivation method. She chose Hong Ling, whose inherited Fire Meridian Cultivation Method surpassed the Second Elder’s middle-grade method 8.

Jade Pendant Incident

At the marketplace, Mianmian refused to surrender a jade pendant she had already purchased, even when Lu Tianqi and Ran Chao offered twice its price. When Su Jiu shattered it, Mianmian defended her and declared that she would rather lose the pendant than let the opposing group take it 24 25.

Unknown to Mianmian, the pendant contained the dormant soul of a great demon who had failed Tribulation Transcendence. In the original story, Bai Su retained the pendant after their dispute. Reports of the incident damaged Bai Su’s standing with the sect’s elders, and her companions retaliated by luring Mianmian outside and having Bai Su release the demon against her. They used the demon to avoid having their own faces captured by Mianmian’s Recording Stone 25.

Su Jiu destroyed the pendant before its occupant awakened, scattering the soul and removing the cause of Mianmian’s previous death. She concealed the danger from Mianmian, who had wanted the pendant simply because it stayed cool in summer. Su Jiu then warned her about Bai Su’s unusually abundant resources and rapid cultivation, prompting her to become wary of Bai Su 25.

Commitment to Cultivation

During her first year, Hong Ling repeatedly pushed Mianmian to cultivate, partly because of a rivalry with Golden Guard Peak Master Long Aotian over their disciples’ progress. Mianmian sometimes escaped to complain to Su Jiu about Jin Chen 20.

Hong Ling eventually changed tactics: instead of appealing to competition, she warned that falling too far behind Su Jiu would prevent the sisters from traveling and training together. Mianmian tearfully promised to work harder and sent Su Jiu a message proposing that they explore the Azure Realm together after reaching Foundation Establishment 39.

After the Outer Gate Grand Competition, Mianmian again resolved to reach Foundation Establishment quickly so she could fly freely with Su Jiu. She later attained that realm, and eventually was reported to have entered Nascent Soul alongside Jin Chen 77 205 1219.

Her preference for leisure continued to invite intervention even much later. Su Jiu confiscated her storybooks and demanded that she improve her cultivation, threatening to punish Jin Chen if she failed to make progress 1552.

Outer Gate Grand Competition

After reaching the fifth Qi Refining layer, Mianmian sought out Su Jiu and complained about her unanswered Message Talismans and repeated absences. She explained that Personal Disciples could enter the Outer Gate Grand Competition from the middle stages of Qi Refining and vowed to defeat Jin Chen 60 61.

During the same visit, the sisters learned that Liu Xing’er, a Golden Guard Peak True Disciple, had claimed a flower-bed platform on sect grounds and forbidden Outer Gate disciples from using it. Mianmian challenged her treatment of public sect property as a private possession and told her to remove her flowers and herbs 61.

Mianmian won a tournament match but nearly exhausted her spiritual energy. Su Jiu checked her pulse and confirmed that she was unharmed. Afterward, Mianmian and Su Jiu learned that a man had been encouraging opponents to attack Personal Disciples; Mianmian’s former opponent revealed that he had even provided a low-grade Flame Talisman, which she had not used. The sect’s leaders subsequently identified Bai Su as the instigator 69.

When Su Jiu won the competition, Mianmian gave her a bag of fruit as a reward and defended her strength against Jin Chen’s skeptical remarks 76.

Phoenix Egg

In a secret realm, Mianmian accompanied Su Jiu, Jin Chen, and Li Yaran along a dangerous path marked by unusually active fire spiritual energy. Although frightened by the formations and beasts ahead, she decided to continue with Su Jiu 81 82.

The group reached a blazing cavern containing a Phoenix Egg. As the cavern collapsed, Su Jiu cut Mianmian’s hand and pressed it against the egg, making it accept her blood and acknowledge her as its master before Bai Su could claim it 82.

The Phoenix Egg later insulted and threatened Mianmian rather than cooperating with her. Su Jiu warned Hong Ling that an adult phoenix could undergo nirvana, escape its contract, and endanger both Mianmian and the Azure Tide Sect. Hong Ling ultimately allowed Su Jiu to destroy it with Purple Ultimate. Mianmian felt their divine-sense connection sever, and Su Jiu offered to find her another spirit beast 146.

Return to Peace City and Protection of Qingqing

Mianmian returned to Peace City with Su Jiu and two companions to observe another round of sect recruitment, approximately ten years after their own departure. When Bai Ran protested that her spiritual-root aptitude had been ranked below Mianmian’s, Mianmian taunted her about her cultivation, and Su Jiu ordered the recruitment to proceed 152.

Despite her childhood hostility toward Qingqing, Mianmian later regularly supplied her with cultivation resources. During one delivery, she caught Xia Meng mistreating Qingqing, whipped Xia Meng, and scolded Qingqing for failing to stand up for herself 202.

When Qingqing was kidnapped in a scheme intended to extort resources from Mianmian, Hong Ling exposed Zhan Sheng as the organizer. Mianmian arrived seeking the kidnappers and learned that Qingqing had been rescued with only minor injuries. Hong Ling handed Zhan Sheng over to her, allowing her to whip him before the assembled Blazing Flame Peak disciples 212.

Growing Cultivation Gap and Gao Yang’s Discovery

As Su Jiu’s cultivation increasingly outpaced her own, Mianmian feared that their different levels would eventually separate them. She brought Su Jiu to Blazing Flame Terrace and challenged her reassuring explanations, correctly recognizing that Su Jiu herself was afraid of something. Su Jiu did not disclose her lingering fear of the book and the Heavenly Dao 418.

Their conversation was interrupted by the discovery of the gravely injured Gao Yang. Mianmian arranged for Zhang Liang to carry him to the Enforcement Hall rather than letting Su Jiu carry the blood-covered man herself. There, Xia Jue rejected Pei Zhen’s accusations that the sisters had caused Gao Yang’s injuries and decided to wait for him to wake 418.

Injury, Prolonged Unconsciousness, and Recovery

Mianmian and Jin Chen frequently trained together because their cultivation levels were similar. During an outing to Maple Forest, Jin Chen rescued Fan Shishi, the Wuyi Tribe Saintess, from a Demon Beast. Fan Shishi followed him and made suggestive claims about the rescue, provoking Mianmian’s jealousy even though Mianmian initially recognized the claims as lies. The experience forced her to confront the possibility that Jin Chen might not always remain beside her 509 510.

Fan Shishi later offered the Wuyi Tribe’s aid to the troubled Jin Household in exchange for a marriage alliance. Jin Chen rejected her proposal and stated that his refusal was not a matter of comparing her merits with Mianmian’s: he simply did not like her 510.

By the time Su Jiu returned to the sect, Mianmian had been injured and left unconscious. Chu Mojin examined her while Hong Ling waited anxiously, and Jin Chen blamed himself for what had happened 509.

Su Jiu risked her life to obtain the Medicine Gate’s Zijin Token as part of the effort to save her, while Hong Ling pursued Endless-Reach Grass from the Wuyi Tribe. During the search for the required medicine, Su Jiu also confronted Wei Xin over her scheme against Jin Chen and secured her cooperation, agreeing to spare her surviving brother only if neither sibling ever approached Mianmian or Jin Chen again 513 517 586.

After gathering all the medicines, Su Jiu told the Su Family Head that Mianmian should awaken within a month. Mianmian subsequently recovered and tearfully reunited with Su Jiu; by that reunion, she had been awake for about a month 726 741.

She remained physically weak soon after recovery. During a lantern-festival outing, Su Jiu blocked and reflected a female cultivator’s spiritual pressure before it could seriously harm her 742 744.

Later Life and Jin Chen’s Courtship

After Mianmian awakened, Jin Chen pursued her increasingly openly, calling himself her fiancé and addressing her as his future wife. His claims embarrassed her, particularly in Su Jiu’s presence 741 742.

Mianmian joined Su Jiu and Blazing Flame Peak disciples for Little Pond City’s lantern festival. During the visit, she bought assorted snacks for Jin Chen to carry and praised Su Jiu after learning that she had secretly left gold for an elderly sugar-painting vendor 742 745.

Much later, Mianmian reminisced with Jin Chen on the Star-Seizing Terrace about their childhood rivalry and her habit of complaining about him to Su Jiu. Their affectionate teasing escalated into a fight after he kissed her, with Mianmian attacking him using Fire Arts. Hong Ling heard the commotion and worried about the prospect of Mianmian leaving to marry him 1430.

Their relationship was subsequently described within the sect as that of childhood sweethearts who had become a couple. Their Dao Companion Ceremony was arranged before Heavenly Origin Hall, with Hong Ling and Long Aotian seated on the raised platform and two Twin Fish Jade Pendants displayed on a red table 1439 1441.

Later Reunions and Concern for Su Jiu

When Su Jiu returned from the Hongsheng Heavenly Road, Mianmian welcomed her enthusiastically and received a box of supreme fire spirit crystals. She also described the new Grand Elder’s hostility toward them and explained that Qingqing had cultivated the Uncanny Path and disappeared with a woman whose attack had injured Azure Tide Sect disciples. Su Jiu urged her not to condemn Qingqing’s cultivation path and to trust that their sister would return, easing Mianmian’s anger 1433.

Mianmian later asked Su Jiu whether she found Xia Jue frightening. She had witnessed something that revealed another side of him, but chose not to describe it because she believed he had no intention of harming Su Jiu and feared that raising suspicion would estrange them 1437.

After Su Jiu spent three years unconscious from severe injuries, Mianmian and Jin Chen came to visit her at Ice Veil Peak. Chu Luohen stopped Mianmian from embracing Su Jiu because physical contact could worsen her condition 1585.

Mianmian recognized the suffering behind Su Jiu’s honors and felt guilty that, despite being the older sister, she had so often relied on Su Jiu’s protection. Jin Chen revealed that Mianmian had nearly fainted upon seeing Su Jiu covered in blood three years earlier, cried afterward, and secretly traveled alone to the Medicine Gate; he had followed her out of concern 1586.

Medicine Gate Captivity and Release

During a later confrontation with Medicine Gate cultivators, Mianmian could teleport only one person to safety before her spiritual power ran out. She chose Jin Chen and stayed behind, leaving herself defenseless when two Medicine Gate disciples captured her. Her captors administered pills that kept her in a confused stupor 1914 1916.

An unidentified Medicine Gate disciple secretly gave her a restorative pill, unlocked her cell, and distracted the guards. Following his warning not to use spiritual-power devices inside the prison, Mianmian escaped to the nearby Small Woods and began activating a Teleportation Array. The silver-haired Medicine Gate Master intercepted her, destroyed the array, and injured her with his whisk. Tang Wuchen persuaded him not to kill her because she was still needed for an exchange with the Azure Tide Sect 1916.

Su Jiu secured Mianmian’s release by putting on a Spirit-Sealing Bracelet and surrendering her own access to spiritual qi. The Eighth Elder examined Mianmian and confirmed that she was recovering. When a rogue cultivator revealed the exchange and mocked Su Jiu, Mianmian drew her red Long Whip and threatened him 1923.

Forbidden Zone and Su Jiu’s Departure

Mianmian strongly opposed Su Jiu’s decision to enter the Forbidden Zone and tried to bring her back to the Azure Tide Sect. Su Jiu made her drowsy, caught her before she fell, and entrusted her to the Fifth and Eighth Elders. She also placed her Storage Ring on Mianmian’s hand and used Mianmian’s blood to make it acknowledge its new owner before sending the sect’s disciples away 1932.

Mianmian later reached the Heaven-Connecting Tower too late to stop Su Jiu’s departure. She called until her voice gave out, but Su Jiu had already opened the Heavenly Gate and disappeared without hearing her. In her side story, Mianmian suffered recurring nightmares of that moment and felt betrayed by Su Jiu’s promise to return and rebuild the sect 1968.

Despite that grief, she rejected claims that Su Jiu’s affection and sacrifices had merely served a divine mission. Mianmian maintained that their sisterhood had been genuine, that Su Jiu had cared for them before recovering her memories, and that her later actions sought to end the wars and the Demon Realm’s invasion to spare others further suffering 1968.

Appearance

Su Mianmian is introduced as a lively young girl with bright eyes, pearly teeth, and a bold manner 1 2.

  • Eyes: Large and almond-shaped 2.
  • Hair: Worn in a long ponytail 2.
  • Childhood features: Retains baby fat that gives her face a lively charm 2.
  • Clothing: Initially wears red; after becoming a personal disciple, wears sect robes embroidered with golden patterns 1 15.
  • Signature accessory: A long black whip carried at her waist, sometimes coiled twice around it 1 2.
  • Later features: Described as having a round, apple-like face and a sweet, dainty beauty; her smile reveals two small canine teeth 509 769.
  • Preferred color: Outside her sect uniform, she wears red because she associates it with fire, the element closest to her 769.
  • Later whip: Her Long Whip is described as red during the confrontation following her release from the Medicine Gate 1923.

Personality

Mianmian is proud, outspoken, and quick-tempered. She confidently assumes she will possess spiritual roots before being tested and freely trades insults with Su Jiu. She also enjoys jewelry and insists that even people cultivating immortality should strive to look beautiful 2 3.

Her sharp tongue contrasts with her affection for her family. She cries when leaving home, firmly believes Su Jiu can complete the Heavenly Stairway, and celebrates her sister’s achievements without resentment. Hong Ling regards this lack of jealousy as evidence of a pure, childlike heart 6 8 39.

She is clever enough to distinguish a cultivation method from individual techniques when choosing a master, but initially prefers rest and freedom to sustained training. Protecting her future companionship with Su Jiu motivates her more effectively than rivalry with Jin Chen 8 39.

Although often carefree, she becomes more perceptive through experience. By the time she confronts Su Jiu about their cultivation gap, she has witnessed betrayal, deception, and death during her travels and can recognize the fear behind her sister’s reassuring manner 418.

She retains a love of ordinary pleasures despite cultivation. Fruit is a particular favorite, and Hong Ling and Jin Chen indulge her appetite rather than expecting her to abandon food after becoming capable of grain-banishing. She also buys snacks and enjoys decorative hair ribbons that have no magical properties 509 745 808.

Her temper is especially fierce when her family is threatened or insulted. She protects Qingqing from mistreatment, punishes the organizer of Qingqing’s kidnapping, and reacts angrily to deliberate insults against her parents and Su Jiu 202 212 754.

Her early hostility toward Jin Chen was partly inherited from Hong Ling’s dislike of Long Aotian. She was initially slow to understand her own romantic feelings, interpreting jealousy as an unfamiliar ache before eventually acknowledging that she had fallen for him 509 1430.

Maturity does not erase her affectionate habits: she continues rushing into Su Jiu’s arms after decades apart. Later, she becomes more conscious of the pain hidden behind Su Jiu’s achievements and feels guilty for relying on her younger sister without being able to shoulder an equal burden 808 1586 1895.

Su Jiu’s final departure leaves her deeply hurt, but she remains protective of her sister’s memory and refuses to accept interpretations that reduce their genuine emotional bond to the fulfillment of a mission 1968.

Abilities & Skills

Fire–Wood Symbiotic Spiritual Roots

Her roots are rated superior-grade, with eighty percent fire and ten percent wood. The testing disciple considers this combination scarcely inferior to a seventy-percent single spiritual root 5.

  • Her aptitude attracts competing offers from Hong Ling and the Second Elder 7 8.
  • Becoming Hong Ling’s personal disciple qualifies her for the Fire Meridian Cultivation Method, an inherited high-grade method unavailable even to Blazing Flame Peak’s True Disciples 8.
  • She is later shown actively circulating that method to assess the unusually vigorous fire spiritual energy in a secret realm 81.

Whip Use

Mianmian carries a whip from childhood and lashes out with it during the Heavenly Ladder’s second illusion 1 7.

  • Her final strike coincides with the illusion shattering 7.
  • Despite that ending, she recognizes afterward that she failed the second illusion; it is not presented as a successful trial 8.
  • She channels fire spiritual energy into her whip during her spar with Su Jiu, withdrawing it and attacking again when Su Jiu’s Ice Spikes knock it aside 146.
  • She uses whipping to punish Xia Meng for mistreating Qingqing and Zhan Sheng for organizing Qingqing’s kidnapping 202 212.
  • Her later whip is explicitly fire-aligned 1156.

Fire Arts

Fire Arts are her primary cultivation specialty. Su Jiu considers supreme-grade fire crystals suitable gifts because they can be used to temper her fire-aligned equipment 1156.

  • She employs hand seals to cast arts 1430.
  • Her attacks against Jin Chen on Blazing Flame Peak include high-level Fire Arts powerful enough to disturb nearby cultivators 1430.
  • She uses her fire spiritual qi to activate a Teleportation Array during her attempted escape from the Medicine Gate 1916.

Combat and Field Experience

  • Wins a match in the Outer Gate Grand Competition, although the effort nearly exhausts her spiritual energy 69.
  • Participates in the group’s struggle through first-tier demon beasts while seeking the Phoenix Egg 82.
  • Lasts half an hour in a spar against Su Jiu, who lowers her cultivation and deliberately guides her through the fight 145 146.
  • Frequently travels to gain experience, often alongside Jin Chen because their cultivation levels are close 418 509.
  • Demonstrates caution during her prison escape by heeding the warning against using spiritual-power devices inside her cell 1916.

  • Su Jiu’s Storage Ring — Transferred to her before Su Jiu entered the Forbidden Zone and made to recognize her through her blood 1932.

Relationships

  • Su Jiu — Adopted younger sister and cherished companion. Mianmian defends her publicly and wants to travel across the Azure Realm with her 2 8 25 39. Their growing cultivation gap causes Mianmian to fear separation, but also deepens her awareness of Su Jiu’s hidden anxiety and sacrifices 418 1586. Su Jiu repeatedly protects her, obtains medicine during her prolonged unconsciousness, and exchanges herself for her release from the Medicine Gate 517 726 1923. Mianmian is devastated by her departure through the Heavenly Gate but continues to insist that their sisterhood was genuine 1968.
  • Su Qingqing — Younger paternal half-sister. Mianmian’s childhood hostility toward Qingqing’s background frightens her, although she has never physically bullied her 2. Their later relationship becomes protective: Mianmian supplies her with resources, whips Xia Meng for mistreating her, and punishes Zhan Sheng for arranging her kidnapping 202 212. She is troubled by Qingqing’s disappearance and later involvement with the Uncanny Path, but Su Jiu encourages her to trust their sister 742 1433.
  • Su Family Head and Madam Su — Parents. Before her departure, Madam Su urges her to curb her willfulness and consult Su Jiu when problems arise 6. Her father privately worries about her prolonged unconsciousness, while later family reunions retain their familiar teasing over Mianmian’s mischievous behavior 726 1441.
  • Hong Ling — Master and one of Mianmian’s favorite people. Strict about training, but ultimately persuades her through her affection for Su Jiu 8 39. Values her life above the Phoenix Egg, permits her to punish Zhan Sheng, and seeks medicine to save her during her prolonged unconsciousness 146 212 517. Mianmian is later identified as her fifth personal disciple 1439.
  • Jin Chen — Childhood cultivation rival who becomes her romantic and Dao-companion partner. His progress initially fuels competition between their masters, and Mianmian resents the resulting pressure and takes pride in advancing before him 20 39. They later train together, develop mutual feelings, and become a recognized couple after a prolonged period of unspoken affection and jealousy 418 509 741 1439. Their Dao Companion Ceremony is arranged at Heavenly Origin Hall 1441. During the Medicine Gate confrontation, Mianmian chooses to teleport him to safety while remaining behind herself 1916.
  • Bai Su — Adversary in the jade pendant dispute. Mianmian becomes wary of her after Su Jiu’s warning; in the original story, Bai Su releases the demon that kills her 24 25. Bai Su is later identified as the instigator behind efforts to turn Outer Gate disciples against Personal Disciples during the competition 69.
  • Liu Xing’er — Golden Guard Peak True Disciple whom Mianmian confronts for monopolizing a platform on sect grounds 61.
  • Xia Meng — Disciple whom Mianmian catches mistreating Qingqing and punishes with her whip 202.
  • Zhan Sheng — Organizer of Qingqing’s kidnapping, intended to extort Mianmian’s resources. Hong Ling exposes him and allows Mianmian to punish him publicly 212.
  • Fan Shishi — Wuyi Tribe Saintess whose pursuit of Jin Chen and proposal of a marriage alliance provoke Mianmian’s jealousy and help expose her previously unrecognized romantic feelings 509 510.

  • Chu Luohen — Initially intimidates Mianmian with his stern, distant manner despite matching her ideal of a handsome young man. Later prevents her from accidentally worsening Su Jiu’s injuries by embracing her 77 1585.
  • Medicine Gate Master — Captor who intercepts her escape, destroys her Teleportation Array, and wounds her before using her as leverage against Su Jiu 1916 1923.
