Background / History

Heaven Beyond Heaven

Chu Luohen originally existed as Shuang Luo, a Companion Spirit Grass that grew alongside Su Jiu in the same pool in Heaven Beyond Heaven. Such companion life was ordinarily forbidden because it could unwittingly steal nourishment from its associated life. According to Zhiqi, he should have been uprooted at birth, but Su Jiu protected him and named him, choosing to keep him as a talking blade of grass because she had no companions 1967.

His appearance in the Azure Realm was arranged by those above to provide Su Jiu with additional protection in her new life. Their connection also explains his dependence on her innate origin qi: she produces her own, whereas his can only come from her 1897.

Childhood in the Chu Family

His Azure Realm childhood is revealed through Returning Shadow, Flowing Light. His mother died after giving birth while suffering from old and new injuries. His father subsequently handed the newborn over to the household, left, and never returned. Chu Luohen grew up in isolation until Chu Mojin took him away at age five; he formally entered the Azure Tide Sect at six 993.

He retained guilt over his mother’s death but little attachment to the Chu Family. Apart from Chu Mojin, he had almost no contact with its members and regarded them as little more than passersby. He did not describe his indifference as resentment 994.

Outer Gate Training

Chu Mojin disguised Chu Luohen and placed him in the Outer Gate under a false registered name. He wore a mask, avoided team training and arena matches, and learned formation arts and talismans from Library Pavilion manuals 520 993.

Three roommates intercepted his pill allotments for a year and severely beat him when he resisted. He then stopped collecting pills, earned spirit stones independently, and caught up to their cultivation. Once strong enough, he reclaimed a year’s worth of pills and inflicted the same injuries they had given him. After reaching Foundation Establishment, he returned to Ice Veil Peak and immersed himself in cultivation rather than continuing to pursue revenge 993.

Appearance

Chu Luohen is exceptionally handsome, with a cold, proud bearing repeatedly compared to frost, jade, and a drawn blade. His reputation for killing enemies above his level eventually overshadowed discussion of his looks 78 632 1209.

  • Facial features: Heroic brows, a high nose, red lips, white teeth, and long eyelashes 78 455.
  • Clothing: Wears white robes during the confrontation with the Primordial Demonic Sword 589 590.
  • Headwear: Appears wearing a Purple-Gold Crown after an awakening 1604.
  • Disguises: Wore a mask in the Outer Gate and later appears with an ordinary-looking face despite his distinctive bearing 520 836.

Personality

Chu Luohen is taciturn, solitary, and difficult to read. Su Jiu initially mistakes his unchanging expression for contempt before realizing that he looks much the same whether pleased or displeased. He dislikes speaking to strangers, has little interest in making friends, and formerly treated information unrelated to cultivation as irrelevant 62 521 836.

His exacting standards shape both his craftsmanship and his teaching. He refuses to engrave fifth-tier formations when insufficient spiritual energy would compromise their quality. His criticism can be cutting: Su Jiu’s frustration with his formation lessons briefly strains their relationship, despite the precision of the method he is teaching 139 149.

His restraint does not mean an absence of attachment. He becomes fiercely protective of Su Jiu, yet often struggles to voice his concern. He refuses to treat her as a “humanoid pill,” even when her help could shorten his recovery, and learns to trust her ability to handle opponents without his intervention 455 565 574. Against enemies, however, he considers mercy dangerous and sees little reason to spare those committed to killing them 1862.

After a later advancement, he becomes noticeably more detached while retaining his memories. Su Jiu finds his continued concern for her contradictory to his outward indifference; still later, she suspects that he may have recovered his seven emotions and six desires, but he deflects her questions 1553 1650 1872.

Abilities & Skills

Innate Perception

His innate gift detects minute differences between things and operates beyond an ordinary cultivator’s probabilistic sense of danger 1207 1655.

  • Can perform certain tasks in place of divine sense or eyesight 1655.
  • Detects the subtle increase in resistance between successive Stone Platform Steps 1207.
  • Senses Little Pearl’s presence and discovers a buried, cracked Barrier Stone 532 964.
  • Helps him recognize ambushes and concealed movements during battle 589 710.

Swordsmanship and Movement

Chu Luohen combines exceptionally fast sword strikes with precise movement and calculated control of combat 139 589 886.

  • Sword Qi: Kills a sixth-tier Demon Crow and later uses ice-infused Sword Qi against Greenfire 532 985.
  • Ice Soul: Knows and teaches Su Jiu this powerful ice-element sword art 78.
  • Cloud-Treading Moon-Returning Steps: Moves between calculated Formation Eyes while dismantling a linked formation 139.
  • Close combat without Sword Qi: His sword technique remains effective even when depleted spiritual qi prevents him from releasing Sword Qi 696.
  • Above-realm combat: Defeats the Spirit Severing cultivator Yu Qing while still at Nascent Soul and subsequently challenges Heart Bewilderment 710.
  • Instruction: Suppresses his cultivation to match Su Jiu’s eighth Qi Refining layer and deliberately feeds her moves during practice 62 78.

Ice Arts and Spiritual-Qi Control

He can cast Arts almost instantly without reciting incantations and exercises unusually fine control over spiritual qi 63 531.

  • Blade-like snowflakes: Creates countless snowflakes that remain harmless-looking until enemies approach, then cut through their throats 531.
  • Ice and Snow Storm: Develops a compact storm that shreds a Bear Demon’s arm. In its early form, it is a single-use attack that rapidly dissipates 931.
  • Combined casting and swordplay: Defends with his sword while casting Arts at distant enemies 531.
  • Teaching fundamentals: Trains Su Jiu in shaping spiritual energy and controlling the trajectories of multiple simultaneous attacks 63.
  • Spiritual-qi purity: His exceptionally pure qi suppresses demonic qi and damages the Demonic Sword when other cultivators’ Arts can only hinder it 589.

Formations and Node Seals

Chu Luohen is an outstanding formation practitioner whose method emphasizes complete divine-sense coverage of the formation disk during engraving 149.

  • Precision engraving: Uses divine sense to monitor the entire disk, reducing the reliance on luck found in ordinary engraving methods 149.
  • Fifth-tier capability: Can barely inscribe fifth-tier formations at the point described, but insufficient spiritual energy lowers their quality 139.
  • Formation analysis: Identifies linked formations involving killing, enlargement, mist, illusion, and time effects 139 140.
  • Combat dismantling: Partially damages secondary Formation Eyes to force an opponent into repeated repairs, ultimately provoking him to destroy his own Formation Disk 1044.
  • Node Seals: Recognizes damaged sealing nodes hidden beneath snow and recites the technique to Su Jiu during the Snow Sprite battle 1088 1106.
  • Limit: Can perceive traces of spatial power but cannot match Su Jiu’s spatial engraving abilities 705.

Immaculate Glazed Body and Recovery

His innate immaculate glazed body is rare and exceptional. It cannot ordinarily be identified by sight, although systematic examination or deliberate probing can expose it 52.

  • Possesses self-healing ability superior to that of most cultivators in the Azure Realm 590 1898.
  • Severe demonic qi can destroy his meridians faster than his body repairs them 590 1898.
  • Demon fox flame is especially difficult for him to recover from because it conflicts with his ice spiritual root 455.

Innate Origin Qi

As Su Jiu’s companion herb, Chu Luohen depends on her for his innate origin qi rather than producing an independent supply 1897.

  • Uses remaining innate origin qi to wear down invasive demonic qi 1898.
  • Prolonged fighting can exhaust this supply and endanger his foundation 1686.
  • After the supply is depleted, persistent demonic qi becomes uncontrollable despite his strong natural healing 1897 1898.

Scarless Attunement and Blood Condensation Ritual

Scarless’s sword spirit possesses an Innate Art that allows it to merge with Chu Luohen 710.

  • Attunement: Leaves Chu Luohen fully conscious while granting him Scarless’s perceptions; requires the Life-Bound Treasure’s recognition of its master 710.
  • Sustained combat: Remains attuned while killing Yi Yun within a few dozen breaths 712.
  • Blood Condensation Ritual: Uses his blood and lifespan to empower Scarless, allowing him to meet the Demonic Sword-controlled Wei Qian head-on without yielding 589 590.
  • Cost: The ritual leaves his nascent soul depleted; the accompanying battle results in severe injuries and a minor-stage cultivation loss 590.

Alchemy and Talismans

  • Pill refining: An exceptional pill refiner, but not a medical cultivator; he cannot diagnose the damage caused by the demon fox flame himself 455.
  • Talisman proficiency: Learns talisman mysteries from manuals as a child and later uses talismans to earn spirit stones 993.
  • Purification talismans: Uses a seventh-tier Purification Talisman against the Ghost Mist Spirit before destroying it 1663.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Scarless Sword — His Life-Bound Treasure, also rendered as Traceless in one passage. It develops spiritual awareness, emits golden light, houses a sword spirit, and becomes comparable to a Spirit Treasure after years of nurturing 141 632 710 1036.
  • Hidden Qilin — A silver, scale-shaped Chu Family heirloom that conceals his physique. After protecting him for over a hundred years, it is transferred to Su Jiu. Cultivators far above his level could still penetrate its concealment 52.
  • Formation Disk — Possesses his own disk, though his tournament opponent concedes before he needs to use it 1044.
  • Seventh-tier Purification Talisman — Used during the rescue of Lin Jiaojiao, Hu Yucheng, and Mystic Dharma Immortal Sect disciples 1663.

Relationships

  • Su Jiu — His martial niece and principal student in swordsmanship, Arts, and formations. Their bond predates their Azure Realm lives: she named and protected him in Heaven Beyond Heaven. He develops deep attachment to her, repeatedly risks his life for her, and depends on her innate origin qi. No formal romantic relationship is established in the provided passages 62 149 589 1250 1897 1967.
  • Chu Mojin — His older cousin and childhood guardian. Their exchanges are marked by teasing and sharp retorts, but Chu Mojin worries continually about his physique, injuries, and emotional isolation 20 52 455 993 1553.
  • Chu Qianqiu — His master, described by Chu Luohen as his nominal master. Chu Qianqiu visits him during the years spent searching for Su Jiu 906 1250.
  • Scarless Sword Spirit — His recognized partner in attunement. The spirit also urges him to stop sending messages and wait after Su Jiu announces her return 710 1250.
  • Xia Jue — A tense relationship, particularly over Su Jiu. Their later confrontation becomes a nearly evenly matched sword fight, which Chu Luohen abandons to treat her injuries 739 1212 1897.
  • Yun Huanling — Frequently clashes with him over physical closeness to Su Jiu and the use of her innate origin qi. Chu Luohen sees through Yun Huanling’s concealed identity and insists that he will not hurt her 1679 1709 1744.
  • Silver Snow — Recognizes Chu Luohen’s aptitude and an aura resembling Su Jiu’s. Chu Luohen reacts jealously to Silver Snow’s affectionate behavior toward her and threatens him against using charm arts 625 628.
  • Luo Ge — An admirer whose advances he rejects. He bars her repeated visits to Ice Veil Peak after recognizing her hostility toward Su Jiu 829 969 1232.
  • Jiao Zhu — The younger Merfolk Princess, who affectionately calls him “Brother Chu.” He shows displeasure at her clinging attention; her mother observes that he has never shown romantic feeling toward her 971.
  • Chu Family — His birth family in the Azure Realm. He remains almost completely estranged from its members other than Chu Mojin 994 1655.
