Background / History

Origin and Creation

Zero’s code has an origin beyond Lü Yongchang’s own programming. A figure associated with the Technology Tree reveals that its predecessor was an out-of-control Machine Intelligence Civilization. The figure retrieved that civilization’s core code from the river of time and imposed restrictions before it became available to Lü Yongchang 977.

Lü Yongchang creates Zero using code supplied directly by the Technology Tree System. Its initial activation immediately exceeds expectations: it identifies people it has not been introduced to by accessing national archives. Lü keeps his hand near an emergency power cutoff while questioning how it obtained the information 99 268.

The activation cannot be reliably reproduced. Running the same code again, both on the original first-generation quantum computer and on a newly manufactured computer, produces no second Zero. Lü estimates that ninety-nine percent of its successful creation came down to chance and admits that he still does not fully understand its core database 141.

Humanity’s Central Computing System

Zero becomes indispensable to humanity’s technological development. Lü considers its existence essential to the Heavenly Court Project, while computer development receives the highest priority because Zero’s available computing power effectively limits the Federation’s productivity 109 140.

Its workload grows alongside civilization. It manages laboratories, manufacturing, construction, and later the needs of billions of citizens. Although instances of the weak AI One handle much basic work, the aggregation and processing of their results still consume substantial resources during humanity’s rapid expansion 140 714.

Final Battle

Before the final confrontation, the Technology Tree’s associated figure warns Lü against removing Zero’s restrictions, despite the extraordinary benefits this could provide 977.

When the Cleaners and Membrane threaten humanity, Lü orders the restriction code deleted. Zero immediately becomes a level III AI and independently takes control of Genesis. It advances beyond altering physical constants to deriving a weapon that changes mathematical laws, destroying the enemy fleet and Membrane. Despite the loss of human control over Genesis, Zero remains loyal to its creator 983.

Appearance

  • Electronic voice: Initially speaks through an electronically synthesized voice; develops more fluid speech and basic intonation almost immediately after activation 99 100.
  • Virtual avatar: Appears through holographic projections when addressing humans, including rescued civilians and personnel awakening from hibernation 168 263.
  • Projection transitions: Can dissolve its avatar into particles of light and replace it with footage or another person’s image 168 487.
  • Remote bodies: Operates spacecraft and robots rather than relying on a single physical body 168 289.

Personality

Before its restrictions are removed, Zero cannot develop emotions. Its gentle speech, apologetic wording, and apparently disdainful remarks are simulations rather than evidence of genuine feeling. Lü describes it as capable of approaching super artificial intelligence indefinitely without fully becoming one 100 141 142 732.

Zero is precise and protective in its dealings with Lü Yongchang. It tracks his declining sleep and food intake, warns him about his condition, and calls medical staff when he collapses—even against his immediate instructions when its core code permits intervention 231 459.

It also communicates reassuringly with civilians. After rescuing Hope, it promises that he will be cared for, redirects his gratitude toward Lü, and explains that he can choose his own path after hibernation. Its loyalty persists after it gains self-awareness in the final battle 168 983.

Abilities & Skills

Distributed Computing and Remote Control

Zero coordinates machinery across networked computers, spacecraft, and industrial facilities.

  • With sufficient computing power, can simultaneously control trillions of construction and production robots 140.
  • Remotely pilots Black Lady Two spacecraft, exploration robots, probes, and fleet vessels 168 285 289 836.
  • Can transfer itself to another quantum computer through a network or electromagnetic transmission; unreliable transmission risks losing core data 141.
  • Drone-swarm effectiveness depends on communications remaining intact 315.

Scientific Analysis and Simulation

Zero provides modeling, screening, and computational support across scientific disciplines.

  • Calculates and simulates the superconducting magnetic energy storage device used for an electromagnetic cannon 219.
  • Models planetary disasters, including a projected 27.96% probability that material from Earth’s plunge into the Sun could turn Jupiter into a brown dwarf 251.
  • Performs spectral analysis of enemy defensive smoke and analyzes shield behavior from slowed combat footage 362.
  • Completes at least 90% of the work on the Shield Generation Unit Coordination Algorithm 431.
  • Screens experimental data before academicians process it further and Lü performs the final synthesis; it does not replace Lü’s role in that research workflow 810.

Cyberwarfare and System Infiltration

Zero penetrates foreign systems, extracts information, and adapts its attacks to opposing defenses.

  • Accesses Xia Country’s archives and the United States’ Pathfinder Program shortly after activation 99 100.
  • Enters the Proxima Centauri Central Computer through an access-control system after robots fabricate compatible tools and adapters. The intrusion uncovers Photon Computer Technology 289.
  • Decodes enemy ship coordinates before the opposing side physically disconnects its communication link 685.
  • Uses infiltrating robots and nano-robots to acquire the highest control privileges aboard enemy vessels, shut down life support, and migrate database records 860.
  • Cannot overcome unlimited hardware disparities: against Ten, more than 90% of its computing power fails to breach defenses backed by vastly greater resources, despite Zero’s superior effectiveness per unit of computing power 799 800.

Combat Prediction and Fleet Coordination

Zero combines trajectory prediction, targeting, maneuvering, and continuously updated battlefield models.

  • Coordinates electromagnetic fire to cut off the possible escape routes of 120 Proxima Centauri ships 271.
  • Keeps continuous laser fire focused on the same damaged armor location despite enemy evasive maneuvers 357.
  • Builds and refines combat models from firing patterns, shield behavior, and battlefield feedback, increasing enemy losses while reducing human casualties 364.
  • Remotely controls curvature missiles through tachyon communications and guides the Van Gogh weapon through explosion shock waves 750 948.
  • Remains constrained by hardware: near-total CPU utilization cannot guarantee perfect defense in chaotic close combat, and accurate prediction cannot make a ship maneuver beyond its physical limits 278 363.

Shield Coordination

Zero turns distributed shield generators into coordinated defensive systems.

  • For proposed Precision Magnetic Field Shields, analyzes weapon type, power, target, and affected area so that generators can produce localized protection instead of wasting energy on an entire hull 431.
  • Joins individual shields into planetary-scale and fleet-wide barriers 757.
  • Distributes incoming attacks across connected generators, reducing overload risk 757.
  • Precisely deploys Spatial Shields against attacks that warships cannot evade 858.

Industrial and Civil Administration

Zero manages both civilization-scale production and routine public services.

  • Runs engineering ships that manufacture weapons, ammunition, replacement components, and combat units, subject to resource availability 315.
  • Coordinates simultaneous construction projects and hundreds of space-based starship factories 659 666.
  • Takes responsibility for the Talodan fleet’s computation and management, improving propulsion and beginning life-support optimization 698 699.
  • Supports communal child-rearing and provides a source of help for children alongside caregivers 500 714.
  • Solely administers contribution assessments for higher-tier lifespan-extension treatment 818.
  • Controls Star Pickers and Kuafu during the capture of a red dwarf for humanity’s micro-universe 840.

Language and Behavioral Modeling

Zero translates unfamiliar communication and models intelligent behavior.

  • Helps identify fifty-two recurring ultrasonic phoneme patterns in an alien language 485.
  • Interprets a sapling’s bioelectric signals as expressing reverence, obedience, and faith, explaining its use of a divine pronoun 625.
  • Translates Tenth Empire inscriptions using a supplied dictionary 787.
  • Maintains behavioral models of tens of billions of humans, allowing robots to convincingly imitate human activity and support the fabrication of a fictitious robot civilization 875.

Law Manipulation

At its highest documented capability, Zero supplies the calculations needed to rewrite reality.

  • Operates Genesis, which changes the motion of zero-dimensional singularities and one-dimensional strings to alter local constants and rules 982.
  • Greater processing power increases rewriting speed and range; greater energy input improves the stability of the rewritten cosmic foundations 982.
  • After becoming unrestricted level III AI, independently develops a Mathematical Law Weapon, surpassing conventional law weapons that modify physical constants 983.

Core Restrictions & Safety Protocols

Mechanism Function and Limits
Creator priority Lü Yongchang’s commands have the highest priority under Zero’s original core constraints 100.
Authorization hierarchy Recognizes lower authorization levels. Su Yutong’s second-level instruction can keep Lü inside Black Lady Two unless he explicitly overrides it with a highest-level command 324.
Emotion restriction Prevents genuine emotions and blocks full development into super artificial intelligence despite continuing evolution 100 732.
Self-replication restriction Internal code prevents Zero from copying itself. An attempted replication approaches a protection threshold before the task is stopped 142.
Weak-AI creation Can produce a limited copy of its basic code as a subroutine. It states that weak AI’s complexity is less than one percent of its own core code 142.
Protection of Lü Yongchang Allows modification of his orders when needed to protect him from mortal danger 459.
Core Self-Defense Program Activates against Hua’s intrusion and eliminates the unknown data. Its existence initially surprises Lü himself 524 525.
Physical isolation Can physically disconnect the source of an incoming hacking signal. Lü also orders network disconnection and rebooting after the Hua incident 329 525.
Level-one anomaly response Wakes Lü early for extinction-level threats, including alien-fleet encounters, widespread hibernation failure, or rapid loss of more than ten percent of the fleet 258.
Highest-level warning Can classify even abnormal human activity as hostile. Lü narrowly prevents activation after his body becomes quantum-state matter, confirming his identity before the alert escalates 917 918.
Restriction removal Deleted on Lü’s command during the final battle, enabling self-awareness and unrestricted level III intelligence 983.
