Background / History
Riko Amanai’s escort
Geto and Satoru Gojo were assigned to escort Riko Amanai for assimilation with Tengen. Before meeting her, they agreed that they would not force her to assimilate if she refused. Both protected her through repeated assassination attempts 2 3 6.
Geto also quietly stationed a cursed spirit near Yuanfang to watch over him. When it was mysteriously exorcised, he feared Yuanfang was in danger, but other assassins delayed his response. He eventually found Yuanfang unharmed and brought him home. The group subsequently traveled to Okinawa at Riko’s request 4.
During their return to Jujutsu High, Geto remembered Yuanfang’s warning not to lower their guard. He released a snake shikigami behind Gojo, but Toji Fushiguro pierced both the shikigami and Gojo. Geto then deployed another cursed spirit to drive Toji back 5.
Riko’s death
Leaving Gojo to fight Toji, Geto led Riko, Misato Kuroi, and Yuanfang into Tengen’s underground domain. There, he explicitly offered Riko the choice to return home. When she chose to remain with her friends, he smiled and extended his hand to her 6.
Toji shot Riko before she could take Geto’s hand. After claiming to have killed Gojo, Toji fought and defeated Geto. Yuanfang later found Geto devastated amid the rubble, reassured him that Gojo was alive, and asked him to arrange the return of Riko’s body 7.
Research and defection
Afterward, an exhausted Geto discussed the origins of curses with Yuki Tsukumo. He suggested killing all non-sorcerers as a solution; Yuki acknowledged its theoretical feasibility but rejected it as too extreme. Hoping for another path, Geto introduced her to Yuanfang, whose lack of detectable cursed energy initially reminded him of Toji 8 9.
Yuanfang’s ability proved capable of suppressing outwardly released cursed energy and preventing shikigami summoning. When Yuki could no longer sense Geto’s cursed energy near Yuanfang, they began investigating whether the ability could offer a way to eliminate curses 9 10.
By 2008, months of research had produced no leads. A junior’s death and a village’s repeated abuse pushed Geto toward exterminating non-sorcerers. He had initially restrained his anger and rescued two girls from the village; on a later assignment, he discovered another captive whose limbs had been broken and could no longer contain himself 10.
Geto visited Yuanfang’s household to say goodbye. He apologized for failing Riko and departed despite Yuki’s insistence that their research still had a chance. Although Yuanfang considered himself indebted to Geto, Geto believed he owed the family because he had failed to protect Riko 10.
Night Parade of a Hundred Demons
Geto became interested in Rika after examining Yuta Okkotsu’s student ID and sensing its lingering cursed energy. He later approached Yuta directly, arguing that great power should serve great goals, then asked him to help kill every non-sorcerer and establish a world exclusively for jujutsu sorcerers. He also invited Yuanfang to join him 13 16.
When Gojo and Masamichi Yaga confronted him, Geto announced the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons: after sunset on December 24, he would release over a thousand curses each in Shinjuku and Kyoto, ordering them to kill everyone they encountered. Yuta refused to assist him, and Geto escaped by using shikigami and the students as leverage against Gojo 16 17.
Yuta subsequently defeated Geto. By Chapter 33, Kenjaku was inhabiting Geto’s body and drawing on his memories of Yuanfang. The later planning sessions involving Mahito, Jogo, Hanami, and Dagon belong to Kenjaku, even when the dialogue refers to him as “Geto” 20 33 35 38.
Appearance
- Black monk’s robes: Worn when he appears on Jujutsu High’s rooftop to investigate Yuta’s connection to Rika 13.
- Dark circles and visible exhaustion: Present during his period of uncertainty after Riko’s death 8 9.
- Persistent smile: After his defection, his smile appears difficult to read as genuine or false; he later maintains a bright, calm expression while confronting Gojo 10 16.
- Forehead stitches: Seen after Kenjaku takes over his body, rather than during Geto’s earlier appearances 33.
Personality
Early in the story, Geto is protective and attentive. He worries about Gojo’s fatigue, takes Yuanfang’s warning seriously, and safeguards Yuanfang without drawing attention to it. His willingness to let Riko refuse assimilation places her wishes above the mission’s intended outcome 4 5 6.
Riko’s death leaves him visibly devastated. He searches for an alternative to the cycle of curses through Yuki’s ideas and Yuanfang’s ability, but failed research, bereavement, and human cruelty deepen his disillusionment. After turning against non-sorcerers, he describes them as “monkeys” and presents their extermination as his purpose 7 9 10 16.
His hostility does not erase every personal attachment. He continues treating Yuanfang warmly because of Riko and remains curious about Yuki’s research. He also retracts his contempt for Maki when Yuanfang explains that she could eventually rival Toji’s strength 16.
Abilities & Skills
Cursed Spirit Control and Summoning
Geto deploys cursed spirits and shikigami for protection, combat, and tactical leverage; the passages use both terms for his summoned creatures 4 5 7 17.
- Surveillance: Stations a cursed spirit near Yuanfang to watch over him 4.
- Defense and restraint: Uses a snake shikigami against Toji’s ambush, then another summon to drive him back 5 6.
- Direct attacks: Summons creatures to fight Toji after Riko’s death 7.
- Mass deployment: Announces plans to unleash over a thousand curses in each of two cities 16.
- Limitations: His summons do not prevent Toji from reaching Riko or defeating him. Yuanfang’s suppression field also prevents shikigami summoning by absorbing outwardly released cursed energy 7 10.
Speed and Physical Strength
- Appears before Yuta with movements fast enough to shock Maki and the other students 16.
- Holds Yuta’s hands in an “iron grip” while attempting to recruit him 16.
Tactical Preparation
- Prepares an escape from Jujutsu High using shikigami and the students as leverage, preventing Gojo from simply attacking him 17.
Relationships
- Satoru Gojo — Escort partner and trusted friend. They jointly promise to respect Riko’s decision; after Geto’s defection, Gojo opposes his influence over the students 5 6 16.
- Riko Amanai — Protectee whose right to refuse assimilation he supports. Her death devastates him, and he later apologizes for his failure to protect her 6 7 10.
- Yuanfang — Initially a child under his protection, later a research subject and friendly acquaintance. Yuanfang believes he owes Geto a favor, while Geto feels indebted over Riko’s death 4 9 10 16.
- Yuki Tsukumo — Philosophical adviser and research collaborator. Their search for a nonviolent solution fails to prevent his defection, which she regards as premature 8 9 10.
- Misato Kuroi — Member of Riko’s escort group. Her favorable impression of Geto makes his turn against non-sorcerers difficult for her to accept 6 10.
- Toji Fushiguro — Enemy who kills Riko and defeats him. Toji’s strength remains memorable enough to change Geto’s assessment of Maki years later 7 16.
- Yuta Okkotsu — Recruitment target who refuses to harm ordinary people and subsequently defeats Geto 16 17 20.
- Maki Zenin — Initially dismissed for her low cursed energy; receives an apology after Yuanfang compares her potential to Toji’s 16.
- Kenjaku — Later occupant of Geto’s body, with access to his memories of Yuanfang 33.
