| Physical defenses strengthened | 37 | His recent defensive training reduces the damage from Mahito’s spiked-club strike to flesh wounds, though explosives remain dangerous. |
Background / History
Transmigration and adoption
Yuanfang awakens after Riko Amanai and Misato Kuroi rescue him from the roadside. Although he remembers falling asleep in his rental room, he now has a child’s body and cannot initially understand their language. Over the following year, he learns the local language and recognizes his surroundings as the world of Jujutsu Kaisen 1.
Knowing the deaths associated with Riko and Kuroi in the original story, he secretly hunts cursed spirits to become strong enough to protect them. His motive is also personal: without their intervention, he believes he would have frozen to death before waking 2.
Riko Amanai’s escort
When Gojo and Geto arrive, Yuanfang asks whether they would allow Riko to refuse assimilation with Tengen. Both indicate that they would respect her freedom. Yuanfang later accompanies the group to Okinawa and indulges Riko’s seaside play despite retaining an adult’s outlook 2 4.
He warns the escorts not to lower their guard, but Toji Fushiguro ambushes them at Jujutsu High. Knowing he cannot stop Toji directly, Yuanfang plans to hide with Kuroi while Geto occupies the attacker 5 6.
After Riko’s death, Geto is disturbed by Yuanfang’s apparent calm. Yuanfang answers that death is not necessarily the end, but the provided account does not establish that he revives Riko 7.
Bringing Hana home
About a year later, Yuanfang uses a map supplied by Kuroi to search abandoned churches for Hana Kurusu. He finds children held by a cursed spirit, destroys it, and sends the other children to safety 8.
After Hana explains that she is an orphan, Yuanfang offers to become her older brother. She accepts, and Kuroi welcomes her into their home 8.
Appearance
Yuanfang initially appears as a cute young boy with small hands, small feet, and a childish voice. By the later school arcs, he has a well-defined physique 1 38.
- Fair, smooth skin — remains unscarred after healing severe burns 41.
- Sharply defined muscles — particularly noticeable after his clothing is destroyed during the Hanami battle 50.
- Gentle smile — contributes to Nobara’s immediate impression of him as a kind, older-brother figure 28 30.
Personality
Yuanfang’s adult memories make him unusually composed for his apparent age. He treats Riko’s teasing as a child’s antics, remains calm under Mei Mei’s provocations, and often reassures frightened juniors with a gentle smile. His affection is clearest toward his household: he seeks to repay Riko and Kuroi for saving him and enjoys Hana’s attachment to him 2 8 14 22 31.
Beneath that approachable manner, he is secretive and calculating. He gives misleading descriptions of his range, holds back in sparring, and feigns exhaustion to preserve access to Yuta’s cursed energy. He dislikes owing favors, yet those obligations repeatedly allow Mei Mei to recruit him for unpaid work 9 10 13 21 46.
Strength is his overriding priority. He prefers harvesting cursed energy to fighting for its own sake and repeatedly chooses opportunities to grow stronger over romantic attention. Although he outwardly supports Yuki’s curse-free world, he privately recognizes that widespread curses and negative emotions would benefit his own growth 23 24 44 49.
Abilities & Skills
Cursed Energy Absorption and Suppression
Yuanfang’s domain absorbs externally released cursed energy and cursed techniques, converting them into resources for bodily strengthening and domain expansion 2.
- Technique nullification: Erases Sukuna’s projected slashes, prevents Yuki from summoning her shikigami, and counters Mahito’s Idle Transfiguration when he first touches Yuanfang 9 26 27.
- Domain countermeasure: Restores the surroundings within ten meters of him inside a curse’s domain and later nullifies Mahito’s domain almost immediately 31 40.
- Energy harvesting: Absorbs energy leaking from wounds, failed techniques, and curses exorcised by other fighters within his range 15 20 32.
- Curtain clearance: Removes stored energy from Yuki’s experimental Curtains, including ten released at a graveyard 23 24.
- Selective suppression: Deliberately allows Yuta’s energy to remain active during sparring; Yuta’s apparent success in overcoming the technique is not an established limit 21.
- Increasing growth cost: Needs progressively larger quantities of cursed energy as his strength and domain expand 11 27.
- Physical limitation: Cannot nullify ordinary physical attacks or explosives. Its suppression also interferes with allied techniques inside the affected area 13 37 49 50.
Concealment and Dual Domain
Yuanfang can hide his cursed energy so completely that sorcerers struggle to detect it. His later Dual Domain adds concealment of his own presence 2 12.
- Approaches the church curse without being noticed despite coming up behind it 8.
- Secretly remains beside Maki and Yuta during their school mission while they believe he has left 12.
- Conceals himself and doubles back while investigating Mahito’s suspected trap 36.
- Particularly powerful opponents can see through the smaller domain’s concealment 12.
- Public range claims are unreliable: his one-meter-radius explanation to Yuki is deliberately inaccurate, as is his later claim of a ten-meter diameter 9 20 23.
Reverse Cursed Technique
Yuanfang discovers a healing function when absorbed negative cursed energy interacts with the negative effects of his injuries, producing a “two negatives make a positive” result 3.
- Self-repair: Can rapidly heal severe injuries, including burns and missing limbs 3 38 50.
- Survival conditions: Requires an intact brain and sufficient cursed energy; regeneration does not make him immune to being killed outright 3 38.
- Healing others: Transfers negative energy to produce a restorative effect in another body, rather than directly transferring positive energy like Shoko Ieiri or Yuta 3.
- Confirmed revival: Restores a dead kitten to life. Before it revives, he questions whether a departed soul would make restoration impossible; broader resurrection limits remain unproven 4.
- Offensive limitation: His healing method cannot damage cursed spirits through positive-energy output 3.
Physical Combat and Swordsmanship
Absorption gives Yuanfang the strength, speed, and endurance to fight powerful curses at close range 2 28 32.
- Wears down the Rhinoceros Cursed Spirit over three hours despite repeatedly suffering broken limbs 3.
- Initially surpasses Mahito in speed and strength, forcing him to flee after two and a half hours of attrition 28.
- Uses a long blade when Mahito’s improved transformations make barehanded combat disadvantageous 37.
- Defeats a combined sparring assault by Nobara, Maki, Panda, Inumaki, and Megumi 34.
- Remains physically inferior to three-Finger Sukuna and cannot follow Gojo’s movements 32 34.
- Cannot fly, allowing a winged Mahito to escape pursuit 38.
Jujutsu Knowledge and Mission Supervision
Yuanfang combines knowledge of the original story with practical instruction and mission support 18 30 49.
- Raises a Curtain around an elementary school and oversees Maki and Yuta’s rescue mission 12.
- Explains Maki’s heavenly binding vow and the connection between the Zenin twins, attributing his theory to research and Yuki’s information 18.
- Teaches junior students about jujutsu and provides corrections during sparring 30 34.
- Explains Maki’s protective motives to Mai and points out Hanami’s eye roots as a weak point 49 50.
- Uses foreknowledge cautiously: he recognizes expected events, but also encounters changes such as curses adopting modern explosives 32 38 50.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Sukuna’s Fingers — treats them as “batteries,” harvesting their released cursed energy. Obtains two from the Giant Worm and later collects additional Fingers; the first pair eventually releases only negligible energy after prolonged extraction 15 27 32 36.
- Tang Dao — a sword used temporarily by Yuji and returned to Yuanfang by Nobara 30.
- Long blade — carried at his waist and drawn during his later battle with Mahito 37.
- Schoolbag — carried during his early curse-hunting period 3.
Relationships
- Riko Amanai — rescuer and family-like companion. He seeks to protect her, tolerates her head-rubbing, and mischievously refuses her request to call her “big sister” 2 4 5 7.
- Misato Kuroi — guardian and remaining family after Riko’s death. She worries about his missions, helps him search for Hana, and maintains their home 1 8 22.
- Hana Kurusu — adoptive younger sister. She becomes strongly attached to him and takes time off school to welcome him home 8 22.
- Satoru Gojo — teacher and mission organizer. Recognizes Yuanfang’s strength, entrusts juniors to him, and frequently teases him; Yuanfang considers him unreliable after the explosive trap 12 28 38.
- Suguru Geto — early protector and someone Yuanfang believes he owes a favor. Yuanfang regrets Geto’s return to his original destructive path 4 10.
- Yuki Tsukumo — researcher and collaborator whose Curtains supply him with energy. Her desire to reproduce his technique leads to repeated pressure to have children and eventually a drug-assisted attempt to obtain his cooperation, interrupted by Mei Mei 9 22 23 24 45 46.
- Mei Mei — mission partner who keeps his strength secret after he saves her from the Giant Worm. Repeatedly turns his favors and obligations into work, including after rescuing him from Yuki 15 30 46.
- Maki Zenin — regular training partner and combat teammate. Her physically focused fighting avoids his technique’s central counter, while Yuanfang helps investigate her unrealized potential 11 13 18 19.
- Yuta Okkotsu — supervised junior and sparring partner. Their daily battles help Yuta control his strength while secretly replenishing Yuanfang’s reserves 12 20 21 22.
- Nobara Kugisaki — junior student with an immediate romantic interest in him. Invites him on food outings, becomes jealous of other women, and fights beside him against Hanami; no established romance is shown 28 30 36 46 50.
- Megumi Fushiguro and Yuji Itadori — juniors under his supervision. He protects them during dangerous encounters, confronts Sukuna over Yuji’s missing heart, and teams up with Yuji against Mahito 24 26 28 31 32 40.
- Mai Zenin — fellow student who uses flirtation to provoke Maki and Nobara. Yuanfang later challenges her belief that Maki abandoned her 36 46 49.
- Mahito — recurring enemy and valuable source of cursed energy. Learns to exploit Yuanfang’s vulnerability to explosives after repeated close-range encounters 28 37 38 40 41.
- Sukuna — opponent whose techniques Yuanfang can erase, but whose three-Finger physical power overwhelms him 26 32.
