Background / History
Maki comes from the Zenin Clan and has a younger twin sister, Mai. According to Yuanfang’s explanation to Mai, their family bullied Mai during childhood, and Mai was frightened of cursed spirits. Maki sought strength so she could confront those dangers and protect her sister, but Mai interpreted her choices as abandonment and as forcing her into a life she did not want 17 49.
Maki’s pursuit of strength is complicated by the twins’ shared cursed energy. Gojo explains that jujutsu treats them as a single person, while Yuanfang identifies Maki’s Heavenly Restriction as incomplete because of Mai’s existence. When Gojo concludes that one twin must die for the other to reach her potential, Maki rejects the discussion and returns to training rather than accepting that solution 17 18.
Appearance
- Has pale legs, which she leaves uncovered without tights even after winter begins 15.
- Resembles Mai closely enough for their likeness to be noted 19.
- Carries a long sword, sometimes strapped across her back 12 33.
Personality
Maki is blunt, proud, and quick-tempered, particularly when she feels others are underestimating her. She resents Yuanfang’s supervision when she interprets it as doubt in her ability, reacts angrily to Geto calling her the Zenin Clan’s “bottom of the barrel,” and initially takes Megumi’s preference for sparring with Yuanfang as an insult 12 16 34.
Her harshness does not exclude concern for others. Yuanfang describes her as “sharp-tongued but softhearted,” explaining that her scolding is meant to make Yuta pull himself together. She later accepts Yuta and defends Yuanfang when she believes Gojo has unfairly burdened him with dangerous missions 12 13 33.
She remains determined to improve despite her limitations and the widening gap between herself and Yuanfang. That determination is tempered by practical judgment: when exhausted in Kyoto, she agrees to rest rather than continue fighting and become a burden 18 19 20.
Maki becomes embarrassed or angry when classmates tease her about Yuanfang. Her displeasure at his closeness with Mei Mei, Nobara, and Mai suggests romantic interest, but the supplied chapters establish neither a confession nor a relationship 13 15 34 36 42 47.
Abilities & Skills
Hand-to-Hand Combat
Maki is an accomplished close-range fighter. Yuta openly marvels at the level of her exchanges with Yuanfang 13.
- Uses punches, kicks, and grappling techniques 13 15.
- Forces Yuanfang to surrender with a leg-scissor hold during sparring, although the narration reveals that he deliberately held back 13.
- Is acknowledged by Megumi as stronger than him and a valuable sparring partner 34.
Swordsmanship
Maki uses a long blade in combat and demonstrates effective curse-exorcising skill 11 12.
- Dispatches three cursed spirits quickly during the elementary-school mission 12.
- Explains the encounter to Yuta while fighting, demonstrating enough familiarity to instruct a novice 12.
Heavenly Restriction
Yuanfang identifies Maki as having an incomplete Heavenly Restriction, also described as a heavenly binding vow. Gojo considers his explanation plausible, although he had not detected the restriction himself with the Six Eyes 17 18.
- Present condition: Low cursed energy and a body stronger than ordinary people’s—not the complete absence of cursed energy associated with Toji Fushiguro 17.
- Twin limitation: Maki and Mai share a cursed-energy pool; Yuanfang explains that this prevents Maki’s restriction from becoming “pure” and also restricts Mai’s cursed energy 17.
- Perception limit: Yuanfang states that Maki cannot see cursed spirits naturally 17.
- Potential: Yuanfang predicts that she can eventually equal Toji’s strength. This remains a prediction, not an achieved awakening in the supplied chapters 16 17.
- Proposed condition: Gojo concludes that one twin must die for the other to realize her potential; Maki refuses to embrace that conclusion 18.
Compatibility with Yuanfang’s Domain
Maki states that Yuanfang’s suppressive technique does not work on her. Her physical fighting style makes her a particularly compatible partner within his domain 11 18.
- Gojo approves her deployment to Kyoto partly because she works well with Yuanfang’s domain and he can protect her 18.
- In Kyoto, she attacks cursed spirits while Yuanfang suppresses them 19.
- During the Goodwill Event, she accepts Yuanfang leaving the group because his presence would prevent her teammates from using their cursed techniques 49.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Long sword / long blade — Her principal shown weapon; she unwraps it before the elementary-school fight and later carries it on her back. No weapon name or grade is supplied 12 33.
Relationships
- Mai — Younger twin sister. Their relationship is strained by Mai’s belief that Maki abandoned her. Maki wishes for the affectionate sister she remembers from childhood; Yuanfang’s later explanation causes Mai to reconsider her judgment 17 19 49.
- Yuanfang — Training partner and trusted teammate. Maki dislikes being separated from him for practice, feels touched when he defends her against Geto, and becomes increasingly concerned about their widening strength gap 12 16 18.
- Yuta Okkotsu — Initially treats him harshly and objects to being paired with him. After their mission and his efforts to improve, she begins accepting him; Yuta later becomes angry when Geto insults her 11 12 13 16.
- Satoru Gojo — Teacher. His teasing often infuriates her, but he explains the twins’ limitations and permits her requested frontline deployment 13 17 18.
- Panda and Toge Inumaki — Classmates and frequent sources of teasing about her interest in Yuanfang. Panda openly favors her becoming Yuanfang’s girlfriend 13 21 34 36.
- Nobara Kugisaki — Junior and apparent romantic rival. Nobara’s attention toward Yuanfang repeatedly irritates Maki 34 42 43 47.
- Kasumi Miwa — Friendly acquaintance. The two chat and laugh while Maki rests during the Kyoto battle 19 20.
- Suguru Geto — Insults her clan standing, then apologizes after Yuanfang compares her potential to Toji’s 16.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Yuta’s Arrival and First Mission
- Confronts Yuta with her blade when he enters the classroom, provoking Rika’s attack; Yuanfang suppresses Rika before she reaches Maki, Panda, and Inumaki 11.
- Is paired with Yuta for an elementary-school rescue mission under Yuanfang’s supervision. After Rika defeats the enormous curse that swallows them, Yuanfang carries the survivors out, and they are taken to hospital 12 13.
Geto’s Declaration and Kyoto Deployment
- Geto’s insult prompts Yuanfang to defend her potential, leading to the discussion of Toji, Heavenly Restriction, and the twins’ shared cursed energy 16 17 18.
- Requests frontline participation on December 24 and travels to Kyoto with Yuanfang and Mei Mei. After Mei Mei leaves for another assignment, Maki fights alongside Yuanfang until exhausted 18 19.
- Returns to Jujutsu High resolved to improve after Mai’s criticism strikes a nerve 20.
Second-Year Training and the Goodwill Event
- Helps involve Megumi and Nobara in training for the Tokyo Sister Goodwill Event, and later invites Yuji and Junpei to participate 33 34 43.
- Holds off Mai’s group with her teammates while Yuanfang concentrates on exorcising cursed spirits 49.
- Yuanfang subsequently finds Mai crying and infers that Maki defeated her. His explanation of Maki’s motives begins to resolve Mai’s longstanding misunderstanding 49.
