Background
Origins and early history
The clan traces its lineage to the elder son of the Sage of Six Paths, from whom it inherited its dōjutsu power and unusually large Chakra reserves. This account comes from the Uchiha Stone Tablet at Naka Shrine, whose contents become clearer to wielders with stronger dōjutsu. The Hyuga Clan is described as descending from the Sage's brother and therefore sharing a more distant common ancestor with the Uchiha 403 408.
More than a century before the present era, the Land of Fire hired the Uchiha to help destroy the Kara Clan. The Uchiha then forged the core of the Kara Clan's Tree of Life into the clan's Gunbai, a powerful heirloom reserved for the clan head 285.
During the Warring States Period, Madara led the clan through repeated losses, outside attacks, and internal infiltration. After he and Izuna awakened the Mangekyō Sharingan, they used its power to reverse the clan's military fortunes 513.
Konoha and marginalization
The Uchiha and Senju jointly founded Konoha, but Madara's defeat and departure left the clan under lasting suspicion. Clan members continued fighting on Konoha's front lines, yet were excluded from later Hokage selections and gradually pushed away from the village's center of power 1 52.
The Second Hokage assigned the clan to operate the Konoha Military Police Force. Although the position carried prestige, it was portrayed as a means to surveil, contain, and divert the Uchiha's strength into routine policing rather than broader village authority 21. The clan was later relocated to Konoha's outskirts after the Nine-Tails incident, intensifying its distrust of the village leadership 382.
Elder Itachi's efforts
Elder Itachi sought to secure the clan's future through Aokiji, whose Sharingan and Ice Release made him an unprecedented dual-Kekkei-Genkai talent. Because the clan traditionally respected strength above lineage, Itachi considered replacing Fugaku as the future leadership candidate with Aokiji 30 74.
When Iwagakure blamed the Uchiha for a Five-Tails incident, Elder Itachi chose to sacrifice himself to prevent a wider war. He believed his death would buy time for Aokiji to mature into the clan's future hope 186 218.
Crisis and Aokiji's return
By Fugaku's era, clan members believed Konoha's leadership had systematically denied them political influence and treated them as a threat. Their resentment culminated in plans for a coup, while Danzo prepared to use Itachi to massacre the clan if it rebelled 333 339 371.
Aokiji's return halted the planned coup. After exposing infiltrators within the clan and revealing the higher-ups' extermination plan, he redirected the clan from an immediate strike toward a broader rebellion against both Konoha's leadership and the Land of Fire's ruling system 346 371 372.
Fugaku relinquished leadership to Aokiji. Under the new leader, the clan withdrew from the Konoha Military Police Force, strengthened its members with Hashirama Cell-derived enhancement serum, and openly opposed Konoha's former power structure 382 385 410.
Organization
- Clan headship — The clan professes that “the capable rise and the mediocre fall”; its head is expected to be its strongest member rather than inheriting the position automatically 30 74.
- Naka Shrine — A major clan meeting place and the location of the Stone Tablet containing its ancestral history 186 403.
- Konoha Military Police Force — Formerly the clan's principal institutional role within Konoha. Aokiji formally withdrew the clan from it after confronting the village over discrimination and distrust 21 382.
- Uchiha Police Force — Armed clan members who enforced public order and later became a key force in Aokiji's resistance against Konoha's higher-ups 371 372.
- Internal security — The clan employed a covert Brainwashing Jutsu capable of producing long-term spies, though Konoha also successfully planted agents within the clan 256 371.
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan
The Sharingan is the clan's hereditary ocular Kekkei Genkai. It grants enhanced perception, dōjutsu-based Genjutsu, and the ability to copy ninjutsu whose hand signs can be observed.
- Uchiha are described as possessing higher natural Chakra reserves than ordinary shinobi 1 21.
- The Sharingan's development is closely tied to emotional stimulation; it is called the “eye that reflects the heart” 120.
- Its visual insight allows users to copy hand signs and learn applicable ninjutsu more efficiently 250.
- It can place targets under Genjutsu for interrogation or control, as Aokiji did to expose Konoha's infiltrators 371.
- The clan also uses the Sharingan to recover lost eyes from fallen members before they can be taken or exploited by outsiders 100.
Mangekyō Sharingan
The Mangekyō Sharingan is a rare evolved form of the clan's dōjutsu, associated with extreme emotional trauma and individual powers shaped by the wielder's mental state at awakening 120.
- It greatly enhances ordinary Sharingan abilities and grants an ultimate personal dōjutsu 326.
- Known manifestations include Susanoo, Amaterasu, Tsukuyomi, Kotoamatsukami, and Aokiji's Soul Fire 120 261 356 409.
- The technique's principal drawback is progressive blindness from the strain of its dōjutsu power 35.
- Aokiji's public display of the Mangekyō and Soul Fire transformed clan opposition into obedience and gave the clan renewed confidence in its leadership 356.
Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan
The clan's historical research identified eye fusion between direct blood relatives as a potential way to reduce Mangekyō blindness. The process is difficult, requires compatible eyes, and historically produced only imperfect results before later developments 35 490 492.
- A perfected version can theoretically preserve multiple Mangekyō dōjutsu in one pair of eyes without the usual blindness 492.
- The clan's pursuit of Eternal Mangekyō power shaped its interest in recovering Madara's remains and other lost ocular materials 70.
Fire Release
Fire Release is the clan's signature elemental specialty and is regarded as exceptionally developed among its members.
- Uchiha Fire Release was considered strong enough that even Water Release generally struggled to overcome it 30.
- The clan's identification with flame later influenced Aokiji's proposed replacement for the Land of Fire: the Land of Flame 372.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Uchiha Gunbai — A clan-head heirloom forged from the Tree of Life's core after the Uchiha aided in the Kara Clan's destruction. It symbolizes the clan head's authority and glory 285.
- Uchiha Stone Tablet — A Naka Shrine relic recording the clan's lineage, the Sage of Six Paths, and the connection between Uchiha and Senju power 403 408.
- Recovered Sharingan — The clan attempts to retrieve eyes from deceased members to prevent their loss, theft, or use in external worship of Madara 100.
- Hashirama Cell enhancement serum — Introduced by Aokiji and Orochimaru; it permanently increases Chakra without reported side effects. Clan members, including Fugaku and Itachi, accepted the treatment 410.
Relationships
- Senju Clan — Konoha's other founding clan and the Uchiha's historic rival. Aokiji's relationship with Tsunade became politically significant because it offered a possible bridge between the two lineages 1 30 253.
- Konohagakure leadership — A hostile relationship defined by distrust, political exclusion, surveillance through the Military Police Force, relocation to the village outskirts, and the later planned extermination of the clan 21 371 382.
- Uchiha Madara — Former clan leader whose departure, Mangekyō legacy, and continuing schemes profoundly shaped both the clan's reputation and its internal politics 31 514.
- Hyuga Clan — A clan described as sharing a distant common ancestor with the Uchiha. The Hyuga later aligned with Aokiji during the struggle for Konoha's leadership 403 420.
- Land of Fire — The Uchiha historically served the Land of Fire in the Kara Clan's extermination; under Aokiji, the clan later embraced a plan to overthrow the country's ruling structure 285 372.
- Uchiha Aokiji — The clan's eventual leader, whose return prevented its planned massacre and redirected it toward open political revolution 374 382 385.
Major Arcs
The Aokiji succession prospect
Elder Itachi discovered Aokiji's Sharingan and Ice Release, viewing his dual Kekkei Genkai as the clan's best opportunity to produce a leader capable of changing its political position. Aokiji's early Sharingan awakening and exceptional Chakra made him a potential successor despite his reluctance to embrace clan expectations 30 72 164.
The planned massacre
Danzo exploited Itachi's loyalty to Konoha, intending to have him eliminate the clan before its coup and bear full responsibility for the crime. The plan relied on the clan's isolation, internal spies, and the expectation that its rebellion would justify extermination 339 371.
Aokiji's return and the exposed conspiracy
Aokiji returned to Konoha after years away, tested the clan's strength, and revealed himself to Fugaku and Itachi. His presence led Fugaku to cancel the immediate coup, while Aokiji later exposed Kagen, Meizu, and Itachi as agents connected to the village's plot 344 346 371.
Break with Konoha
After becoming clan head, Aokiji publicly challenged Konoha over the Uchiha's relocation and treatment. He announced the clan's withdrawal from the Military Police Force, ending its principal formal role within the village 382 385.
Consolidation under Aokiji
Aokiji ordered Itachi out of the Anbu, introduced Orochimaru as an ally, and distributed enhancement serum to the clan. These actions consolidated loyalty and increased the clan's strength before its confrontation with Konoha's former leadership 410 416.
Rise to political power
Following the deaths of Konoha's higher-ups, the Uchiha and Hyuga emerged as the dominant factions in the Hokage selection. With Hyuga support, Aokiji accepted the Hokage position temporarily, achieving the political authority the clan had long been denied 420.
