Background / History

Madara was born during the Warring States Period as the son of the Uchiha Clan head. Despite his exceptional talent, he initially hated fighting and wished people could settle conflicts through discussion. His friendship with Senju Hashirama, who shared that dream, ended when their fathers discovered the boys belonged to enemy clans; the loss awakened Madara’s Sharingan. 513

As the Uchiha suffered defeats and internal turmoil, Madara and his brother Izuna killed two apparent traitors. The men had actually infiltrated the enemy and arranged their own deaths so the brothers could awaken the Mangekyō Sharingan. Madara came to believe that sacrifice was necessary to prevent further sacrifice, and that individual power could overcome any obstacle. 513

Madara fused with Izuna’s eyes to obtain the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan. After Hashirama defeated him despite that power, the two founded Konoha and helped establish the One Country, One Village system. Their alliance did not last: Madara became convinced that Konoha’s political order would marginalize the Uchiha and that he would always stand behind Hashirama and Tobirama. 513 514

He planned to lead the Uchiha away from Konoha, but his clansmen rejected him. While travelling, Madara witnessed oppression perpetuated by people who had once been victims themselves. After a girl he had rescued attempted to poison him, he concluded that greed, hypocrisy, and violence were inherent to humanity; he committed himself to the Infinite Tsukuyomi as the only path to permanent peace. 514

After his defeat by Hashirama, Madara used a delayed Izanagi to survive at the cost of one eye and left a Shadow Clone in place of his corpse. He implanted Hashirama’s flesh into himself, sought the Rinnegan, and hid in the isolated Land of Water while preparing contingencies for his plan. 27 31 70

In the Land of Water, Madara controlled the Second Mizukage with Sharingan genjutsu and imposed a brutal graduation system intended to produce stronger shinobi. He later arranged for the Second Mizukage to die alongside the Second Tsuchikage, then maintained control over the Third Mizukage. 27 37

Madara returned to Konoha, killed Elder Itachi through genjutsu, stole Impure World Reincarnation from the village’s forbidden vault, and staged a crime scene intended to frame Aokiji and destabilize Konoha. He subsequently cultivated Aokiji as a prospective successor, intending to drive him into despair, lead him to Madara’s Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan, and make him inherit the Infinite Tsukuyomi plan. 32 71

When Aokiji became an uncontrollable variable, Black Zetsu arranged Madara’s revival through a manipulated bespectacled man. Madara immediately released himself from the Impure World Reincarnation contract, enslaved the man with dojutsu, and chose to observe Aokiji before acting openly. 457

Appearance

Madara’s appearance varies with his state. His Impure World Reincarnation body wears archaic crimson armor over a black bodysuit, with waist-length black hair, a handsome face, and visible reanimation cracks. After fully returning to life and becoming the Ten-Tails’ host, he appears in white robes with white hair and ripple-patterned eyes. 457 487 510

  • Long black hair in his reincarnated and earlier forms. 457
  • Crimson Sharingan and Mangekyō Sharingan; later possesses the ripple-patterned Rinnegan. 457 478
  • Carries an enormous black war fan in battle. 515
  • Truth-Seeking Orbs float behind him as the Ten-Tails Jinchūriki. 489

Personality

Madara presents himself as calm, confident, and overwhelmingly self-assured. Even when confronted by enemies or an attempted controller, he treats them with open contempt and assumes he holds the initiative. 31 457

His stated goal has always been peace, but he believes ordinary human desires inevitably create war. Madara sees deception, oppression, and sacrifice as the world’s fundamental nature, and therefore considers the Infinite Tsukuyomi a justified solution rather than a surrender to despair. 31 514

He is highly pragmatic and manipulative, cultivating successors, planting contingencies, controlling political leaders, and exploiting emotional trauma to advance his goals. He nevertheless values exceptional talent, taking pride in Aokiji as his descendant and “true disciple,” even while remaining dissatisfied with Aokiji’s priorities. 27 71 457 489

Madara retains deep resentment toward Tobirama for Izuna’s death and for the Uchiha’s political position in Konoha. In contrast, he respects Hashirama’s rare idealism, even though their opposing methods and history made them lifelong rivals. 463 513

Abilities & Skills

Sharingan and Genjutsu

Madara possesses overwhelming ocular power capable of controlling opponents, reading details through their memories, and manipulating perception.

  • Controlled the Second Mizukage and later the Third Mizukage through Sharingan genjutsu. 27 37
  • Erased Binghe’s memories concerning the Sharingan. 37
  • Can incapacitate opponents with a glance; Elder Itachi was defeated before he could meaningfully resist. 32
  • Used the Transcription Seal to place a pre-set technique in Dokai’s eyes. 113
  • His summoned state could sustain long-term control techniques, but exerting too much power caused the summoning to end quickly due to insufficient Chakra supplied by the Third Mizukage. 36

Mangekyō Sharingan and Susanoo

Madara’s Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan does not lose its light and grants access to advanced Uchiha techniques.

  • Amaterasu — Black flames associated with the destruction of all things. 123
  • Kagutsuchi — A Mangekyō technique paired with Amaterasu. 123
  • Susanoo — Manifested as a blue giant and later developed into complete armored forms. 260 463
  • Yasaka Magatama — Used through Susanoo to destroy Kakuzu’s Earth Spider. 261
  • Fire God Form — Created by combining Susanoo with two Chibaku Tensei. 483
  • Can armor Hashirama’s Wood Human and the Ten-Tails with Susanoo. 481 512

Rinnegan and Limbo

After combining Uchiha and Senju power, Madara awakened the Rinnegan and gained Six Paths-level techniques.

  • Shinra Tensei — Used with superior combat timing to counter Aokiji. 478
  • Chibaku Tensei — Captured the Six-Tails and Five-Tails and contributed to his Fire God Form. 482 483
  • Limbo: Border Jail — Creates four invisible clones that normally cannot be seen or sensed without the Rinnegan. 487
  • Tsunade can sense Limbo clones despite being unable to see them. 510

Ten-Tails Jinchūriki Power

As the Ten-Tails’ host, Madara possesses power beyond ordinary shinobi and access to Truth-Seeking Orbs.

  • Truth-Seeking Orbs — Black spheres containing Yin, Yang, and the Five Elements; they can reshape into discs and other forms. 489
  • Controls and fights through the Ten-Tails, including using Susanoo to enhance it. 512
  • Possesses immortality and indestructibility in this state. 495
  • His connection to the Ten-Tails can be disrupted, and Hashirama-derived Sage Mode techniques can bind him and assist in extracting the beast. 513

Ninjutsu and Combat

Madara is an elite all-round combatant with immense Chakra, refined taijutsu, and mastery of multiple high-level techniques.

  • Fire Release: Great Majestic Heavenly Dragon — Overpowered Kakuzu’s Fire Release: Searing Migraine. 260
  • Tengai Shinsei — Summons a massive meteorite. 480
  • Sage Mode / Sage Art: Wood Release: True Several Thousand Hands — Accessed through the controlled Hashirama. 480
  • Shadow Clone Technique — Used a Shadow Clone to exhaust and deceive Kakuzu during their battle. 261
  • Reacted to and fought four Jonin-level elemental monsters simultaneously while evading or blocking their coordinated attacks. 260

Forbidden Techniques

Madara employs forbidden jutsu as both survival tools and long-term strategic assets.

  • Izanagi — Sacrificed one eye to alter reality and survive his apparent death. 31 408
  • Impure World Reincarnation — Stole the technique from Konoha, later used it to revive Hashirama and Tobirama. 32 463
  • Can release himself from an Impure World Reincarnation summoning contract if he knows the hand seals. 457
  • His reincarnated body has endless regeneration and Chakra, but cannot fully reproduce his prime strength and remains vulnerable to soul-targeting attacks. 457

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Uchiha Gunbai — An enormous black war fan used offensively; its enlarged strike cut through Aokiji’s Complete Body Susanoo. 515
  • Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan — The only documented Mangekyō Sharingan stated not to go blind. 70
  • Hashirama’s flesh/cells — Implanted into his body as part of his pursuit of the Rinnegan. 27 480
  • White Zetsu — Created using Hashirama Cells and the Six Paths Demonic Statue; serves as Madara’s scout and agent. 332

Relationships

  • Senju Hashirama — Childhood friend, founding partner of Konoha, and lifelong rival; Madara respects Hashirama’s idealism but rejected his path to peace. 513 514
  • Senju Tobirama — Political and personal enemy; Madara blames him for Izuna’s death and torments him after reviving him. 463
  • Uchiha Izuna — Younger brother whose eyes enabled Madara’s Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan; Izuna’s death remains central to Madara’s hatred of Tobirama. 463 513
  • Uchiha Aokiji — Descendant and intended successor; Madara engineered parts of Aokiji’s life to turn him into an heir to the Infinite Tsukuyomi, but Aokiji became his greatest variable and opponent. 71 457 489
  • Black Zetsu — Trusted operative tasked with arranging Madara’s revival if his plans went out of control. 457
  • White Zetsu — Madara’s scouting creation, used to gather intelligence and locate possible successors. 332

  • Elder Itachi — Former mentor who opposed Madara’s worldview and was killed by his genjutsu. 31 32
  • Third Mizukage — Controlled subordinate in the Land of Water, able to summon Madara through their contract. 27 36
