Background

Jiraiya was a white-haired Academy student whose poor academic performance contrasted with his exceptional physical ability and Chakra reserves. He became fixated on winning girls’ attention, envying Orochimaru’s popularity and repeatedly attempting to impress others through shuriken skills or flashy displays 5.

He sought out Aokiji after noticing suspicious “nighttime activities,” only to discover that Aokiji’s secret concerned training rather than anything improper. The two became friends; Aokiji taught him shuriken techniques, while Jiraiya provided “study materials” and later treated him to ramen 4 7. Aokiji was among the first to recognize Jiraiya’s latent potential, estimating that his Chakra could exceed Aokiji’s, Tsunade’s, and Orochimaru’s combined—a judgment Sarutobi Hiruzen later confirmed 25 27.

After graduating, Jiraiya trained under Sarutobi Hiruzen with Tsunade and Orochimaru. Hiruzen steered him toward the Summoning Jutsu to curb his impatience and give him a long-term goal; Jiraiya ultimately formed a contract with Mount Myōboku and summoned Gamabunta 11 12 23.

Personality

Jiraiya is boastful, impulsive, and openly lecherous. His desire to impress girls motivates much of his early training, including his determination to learn the Summoning Jutsu and his pursuit of Tsunade despite her repeated rejection 5 12 20. He is sensitive about being underestimated and reacts dramatically when Aokiji surpasses him or when others doubt his talent 23 25.

Beneath his unserious exterior, Jiraiya is persistent and highly protective of those he cares about. He accepted the Hokage position out of duty to Konoha, worried deeply about Konohamaru’s safety, and refused to abandon Nagato a second time after regretting leaving him in the past 141 496 504.

Jiraiya returns to Konoha and reunites with an inexplicably younger Aokiji, only to find his old friend surrounded by tension and accusations. When Aokiji hints that Sarutobi Hiruzen and Tsunade were harmed by Konoha’s leadership, Jiraiya seeks answers from the Hokage’s office, where Danzō presents a fabricated account of Aokiji’s past 377 383.

Konohamaru’s Future

Jiraiya resists teaching Konohamaru ninjutsu because he fears the boy may later seek revenge against someone beyond his ability to defeat. After Aokiji offers to erase Konohamaru’s memories and place him with a wealthy family, Jiraiya agrees to join Aokiji’s side while attempting to secure Konohamaru’s safety 496.

Battle Against Pain

Jiraiya confronts Konan and the Six Paths of Pain during the war, grieving for his former students before entering Sage Mode 501 502. He systematically defeats Naraka, Preta, Asura, Animal, and Human Paths through planning, summons, Sage techniques, and genjutsu 502.

He then faces Deva Path Pain alone to keep the Allied Shinobi Forces out of the blast radius of Pain’s techniques. Although Super Almighty Push breaks through his Four-Layer Rashōmon and renders him unconscious, Jiraiya escapes through the Hiding in Toad Technique and defeats Deva Path Pain with a final Super Great Flame Rasengan 503 504.
