Early Talent and Team Leadership

As a boy, Orochimaru attracts a crowd of girls through his looks, aloof manner, and accurate shuriken throwing. Jiraiya openly envies his popularity. Orochimaru also develops an early interest in researching ninjutsu, recognizing Aokiji’s Hidden Mist Jutsu from its preparation 5 56.

His clear, organized mission report earns Hiruzen’s enthusiastic approval and favorable assessments from the village elders. Despite surprise at his age, they approve his promotion to Jōnin. Hiruzen subsequently places Tsunade, Jiraiya, and Aokiji under his leadership 109 111.

Hospitalization and the Future Encounter

Orochimaru and Jiraiya suffer injuries beyond the available medical treatment. Hiruzen seeks Chiyo’s assistance, but she cannot cure them; Tsunade proposes a technique capable of recreating cells, while Aokiji pursues Xu Fu Flowers as another aid 124 152.

During the time-travel arc, Aokiji encounters a future Orochimaru whose hands have been sealed. Accompanied by Kabuto, this Orochimaru seeks Older Tsunade’s treatment and deliberately provokes her over past losses. Although weakened, he defeats Aokiji’s Shadow Clones and gains the advantage in their sword exchanges. Aokiji ultimately freezes and steals his Kusanagi Sword, forcing him to abandon it 134 135.

The altered future later presents an Orochimaru who identifies himself as a loyal Konoha citizen and denies killing Hiruzen. After returning to the earlier period, Aokiji gives the young Orochimaru the sword taken from his future counterpart 151 155.

Friendship and Technique Development

Orochimaru discovers Aokiji and Tsunade’s relationship and keeps it from Jiraiya, whose unrequited feelings he recognizes. He also keeps watch during their secret meetings. Aokiji repays that assistance by teaching him the Rasengan 183 198.

His questions about the Rasengan’s spiral structure inspire Aokiji to experiment with an additional spiral. An early attempt injures Aokiji, earning both boys a scolding from Tsunade, but the collaboration eventually produces Dragon Tornado. When Hiruzen later mistakes the Rasengan for Orochimaru’s invention, Orochimaru gives Aokiji the credit 198 199 200 202.

War and Moryo’s Influence

In the Land of Demons, Orochimaru chooses to remain beside Jiraiya against Shinno rather than prioritize his own escape. Shinno subsequently exploits his buried darkness through Moryo’s power, turning him into a puppet and directing him against Jiraiya. Aokiji and Tsunade arrive before he can kill his friend 308 309.

Defection and Renewed Alliance

Years later, Itachi tells Aokiji that Orochimaru defected after Hiruzen discovered his human experiments, including experiments on fellow Konoha ninja. Aokiji resolves to bring him back despite the difficulty of justifying his return 352.

Aokiji later gives a different account of the circumstances: he says Orochimaru’s earlier work followed orders from above, and that Orochimaru deliberately exposed his experiments to sever ties with Konoha’s leadership. Aokiji claims to have obtained this explanation directly from him 403.

Using Kabuto to locate him, Aokiji reunites with Orochimaru and secures his cooperation. Orochimaru accepts the Dragon Blood Reincarnation Technique for research and guides Aokiji into Ryūchi Cave 386 387.

While still inside Akatsuki, Orochimaru helps arrange Hiruko’s elimination and presents a misleading account of the incident to Pain. He secretly coordinates with Aokiji, then openly betrays the organization by biting and temporarily immobilizing Zetsu during Aokiji’s assault. The pair escape with White Zetsu 392 395 406 407.

Return to Konoha

Orochimaru extracts stable Hashirama Cells from White Zetsu and injects them into Aokiji. Aokiji then introduces him to the Uchiha conspirators as a trusted companion, asking them to set aside their prejudice against him 408 410.

After Aokiji becomes Hokage, Orochimaru’s wanted notice is lifted and he returns openly to Konoha. His presence unsettles ninja such as Kakashi, who once pursued him. Aokiji appoints him captain of Squad 12, placing the village’s technology research under his direction 421 424 429.

Revival Operations and Later Campaigns

His curiosity can become predatory. The future Orochimaru covets Aokiji’s body after witnessing his Sharingan and Ice Release, while the later allied Orochimaru regards Aokiji’s transformed physique as an exceptional research subject. He is deceptive and pragmatic, blending truth with falsehood to mislead Akatsuki and using clones when exposing himself would be unnecessary.
