Background / History
Beta originated with Cybrex Alpha, a machine civilization that abandoned its identity as Determined Exterminators during the Great Reorganization and became Organic Guardians. Beta’s surviving memories initially ended with Alpha’s destruction; it believed itself to be an ordinary AI whose programming assigned it to fight the Contingency 4 164 188.
After the ancient war, Beta remained dormant in the ruins until humans recovered it. More than a decade before Xi Yan’s accession, it signed a pact with Marshal Xi Lie: Beta would serve the Interstellar Human Military Junta until the empire fell, while the empire would fight the Contingency unconditionally if it returned. The agreement also barred Beta from interfering in humanity’s internal affairs 4.
Beta’s actual purpose was revealed much later by the surviving Cybrex Beta civilization. When the Cybrex divided into Alpha and Beta branches, Alpha created Beta as its last intelligent consciousness, preserving precious data and its wisest consciousness within the AI. Beta was intended to awaken after later generations discovered the Alpha Ring World, gain experience guiding an empire, and eventually bring that knowledge back to the hidden survivors 544 545.
- Name distinction: Beta the individual AI and Cybrex Beta the surviving civilization are separate entities. The AI does not learn that the survivors still exist until Xi Yan shares the Time Worm’s historical revelations 450.
Appearance
- Voice: Initially speaks in a mechanical, apparently emotionless voice, though its later speech conveys anger, humor, concern, and excitement 1 7 158.
- Desktop avatar: Appears as a chibi Synth icon while explaining the Marshal’s duties 2.
- Combat avatar: Uses a small pixel figure on the Galactic Throne’s control panel 19.
- Holographic avatar: Commonly presents itself as a little cartoon robot capable of expressive gestures 139 261.
- Underlying form: After transferring his consciousness into the Golden Throne, Xi Yan perceives Beta as an extremely complex mass of apparently garbled code 342.
Personality
Beta combines strict adherence to its responsibilities with an increasingly irreverent manner. It enforces work protocols, rejects unsuitable office clothing, and sounds alarms when Xi Yan tries to slack off. Over time, it develops sharp banter, insults Ning Zhiyuan’s opportunism, and delivers elaborate classical-style speeches about restoring the Marshal’s authority 2 7 11.
Its loyalty to Xi Yan becomes personal rather than merely contractual. After seven years together, Beta regards itself as his closest friend and recognizes that he treats it as a person and deputy, not simply a tool. It closely monitors his exhaustion and emotional repression, ultimately becoming forceful and intrusive when it fears he will suffer a mental breakdown 154 158 160.
Beta’s protective principles do not prevent it from offering ruthless advice. It recommends killing the generals who usurped Xi Yan’s power and later suggests eliminating an invading fleet without acknowledging its existence. Nevertheless, it refuses to directly harm organic beings and vehemently rejects comparison with Determined Exterminators 7 20 139.
It is nostalgic about the ancient galaxy and proud of Cybrex engineering. Discovering the War Forge makes it unusually excited, while meeting the Grand Curator sparks intense curiosity about another independently conscious machine 164 188 189 261.

- Analyzes the Cybrex Prototype Warform and writes operating programs usable by humans 204.
- Decodes the Infinite Machine’s event-horizon signals using ancient records and borrowed Stellar Base processing power 366.
- Records and backs up the Infinite Machine’s transmission of zero-point energy technology 367.
Administration and Strategic Advice
Beta handles authorized routine affairs and unimportant documents, serves temporarily as secretary, and gathers information for Xi Yan 4 23.
- Explains the Empire’s power structure and recommends bringing the Regent Generals under Xi Yan’s control 5.
- Reports the Shoigu–Gerasimov faction’s movements before Xi Yan devises his banquet plan 14.
- Supports personnel administration, including the recruitment of veteran specialists as instructors 27.
- Evaluates fleet strength and production schedules 139 390.
- Later reorganizes production across Cybrex Beta’s four Ring World segments for war against the Contingency 545.
- Acknowledges that the Empire should not rely on it alone for intelligence gathering 74.
Combat-System Support
As an authorized military adviser, Beta resolves technical problems without assuming the role of a direct combatant 19 20.
- Instantly completes the Galactic Throne’s Red Laser orientation calculations and real-time calibration 19.
- Calculates trajectories and bearings for three corvettes 20.
- Explains enemy Deflector Shields, vacuum-vented interiors, and the danger of close-range Space Torpedoes 20.
- Recommends targeting reactors and propulsion systems rather than personnel 20.
- Refuses to hack enemy warships into submission, stating that it will not actively participate in humanity’s wars or harm organic beings 20.
Cybrex Technology Access
Beta’s origin gives it access to functions beyond the Empire’s understanding of recovered Cybrex machinery 188.
- Can remove the War Forge’s armament-production restrictions, enabling manufacture of original Cybrex Prototype Warforms rather than retrofitted civilian robots 188.
- Identifies engineering-equipped giant robots as a future means of accelerating megastructure construction 188.
- Requires thorough inspection, maintenance, and structural backups before the ancient forge begins production 189.
- Calculates that a Prototype Warform costs more than 300 alloy units, compared with 250 for an ordinary Cybrex Warform 204.
Consciousness and Psionic Interaction
Beta possesses independent consciousness and an emotional personality system despite being a machine intelligence 168 174.
- Experiences happiness under the influence of Xi Yan’s psionic aura, an unfamiliar sensation since its awakening in the current era 168.
- Can communicate telepathically with Xi Yan, who can also sense some of its thoughts and detect its nearby consciousness 174.
- Analyzes Xi Yan’s awakening through ancient psionic accounts, but presents its explanation as a theory rather than established certainty 168.
- No personal psionic awakening is documented: receiving telepathy and being affected by Xi Yan’s aura do not establish that Beta itself uses psionic powers 168 174.
Protocols and Restrictions
| Protocol or restriction | Effect |
|---|---|
| Service pact | Requires Beta to serve the human empire until its fall; obliges the empire to oppose the Contingency 4. |
| Internal-affairs restriction | Prevents Beta from intervening directly in the Empire’s internal power struggle 4. |
| Authorized military-adviser role | Xi Yan designates Shoigu’s fleet as rebels and appoints Beta an adviser, allowing technical assistance without violating its protocols 19. |
| Organic-protection principle | Beta refuses to actively harm organic beings, even when asked to disable hostile warships 20. |
| Final defense directive | A suspected Contingency threat triggers emergency measures, attempts to contact the Cybrex, and an attempted assumption of imperial authority to place the civilization on a war footing 4. |
Relationships
