Background / History

Toji grew up in the Zenin Clan, where his lack of cursed energy made him an object of rejection and childhood bullying. He left the clan, but its treatment of him continued to shape his hostility toward Jujutsu Society and his concerns about his son’s future 15 49 131 132.

After leaving, Toji had Megumi with a woman whose influence softened his delinquent, socially maladjusted personality. She died shortly after Megumi’s birth. Toji subsequently married Tsumiki’s biological mother, and both he and Megumi adopted the surname Fushiguro 33.

Toji made a deal involving Megumi and the Zenin Clan. When he believed he was dying, he told Satoru Gojo that his son would be sold to the clan in two or three years and left Gojo to decide what to do. After surviving, he entrusted Megumi to Gojo rather than resume raising him himself 33 49 53.

Appearance

  • Tall, strongly built physique: His muscles are described as taut like a black panther preparing to spring 47 203.
  • Black eyes: Noted while he threatens Chisei during their confrontation 47.
  • Missing left arm: Lost during Gojo’s Hollow Purple attack and not restored when Chisei saved him 49 50 200.
  • Disguises: Uses sunglasses, a wig, and a prosthetic limb to blend into security personnel at Riona’s funeral 130.
  • Later clothing: Wears a black jacket with one sleeve hanging empty during his return to the Fushiguro home 203.

Personality

Toji initially treats assassination as a business, prioritizing bounties and money over personal involvement. He accepts payment to feed Chisei misleading information without caring whether she believes it or what consequences follow. He also assesses risks pragmatically, withdrawing when Gojo’s arrival makes capturing her alive too dangerous 16 39.

His professional detachment breaks down when the Zenin Clan and his own rejection become involved. During his rematch with Gojo, he abandons his money-first principles to challenge someone standing at the pinnacle of the society that rejected him. Near defeat, he recognizes that abandoning those principles was itself a loss 49.

Toji’s ruthlessness coexists with attachment and hesitation. Although he seriously injures Chisei and threatens to dismember her, she believes he repeatedly passed up opportunities to kill her. After surviving and losing an arm, he becomes less reckless, but shame about his past keeps him away from his children. Their eventual welcome leaves him unusually subdued and apologetic 47 49 53 200 203.

Abilities & Skills

Heavenly Restriction

Toji possesses no cursed energy; his Heavenly Restriction instead gives him exceptional physical capabilities 15 158.

  • Strength: Tears apart Chisei’s initial restraint through brute force alone 15.
  • Speed: Keeps pace with her blood-enhanced movement and attacks faster than Geto’s Rainbow Dragon can intercept 15 46.
  • Durability: Withstands Gojo’s maximum-output Cursed Technique Reversal: Red, although Hollow Purple overwhelms his body 49.
  • Recovery: Returns to working outside relatively soon after losing an arm, impressing Chisei with his resilience 59.
  • Limits: Can still be restrained indirectly. Chisei immobilizes herself with Judgment while clinging to his leg, preventing him from simply tearing through a technique placed on his own body 47.

Stealth and Barrier Infiltration

His absence of cursed energy makes Toji practically invisible to conventional jujutsu detection 16 56.

  • Leaves no cursed residue that Jujutsu Society can use to trace him 56.
  • Can pass through Tengen’s barriers with little risk of detection 199.
  • Is classified as an ordinary person by the Shibuya Curtain, allowing him to accompany Gojo into the enemy’s trap 204.
  • Detection exception: The young Gojo noticed him standing behind him, an experience Toji remembers as unprecedented 16.

Close-Quarters Combat and Weapons

Known as the Sorcerer Killer, Toji has virtually unmatched hand-to-hand combat skills and a reputation for taking sorcerers’ heads with a single blade stroke 48.

  • Uses swords, daggers, a handgun, and special-grade cursed tools 15 45 46 158.
  • Attaches the Inverted Spear of Heaven to a chain to guide its trajectory at range 47.
  • Uses powerful blade swings to clear airborne debris and restore his line of sight 47.
  • Relies heavily on cursed tools because he cannot use cursed energy himself 158.

Tactical Analysis

Toji studies opponents’ techniques and exploits openings rather than relying solely on physical superiority.

  • Identifies that the younger Gojo does not keep Limitless continuously active because of its energy cost 40.
  • Recognizes the danger of Gojo’s immediate reaction after a surprise attack 40.
  • Retreats from the first Chisei confrontation rather than fight both her and Gojo without the cursed tool he needs 16.
  • Knowledge limit: His familiarity with Limitless, Blue, and Red does not prepare him for Hollow Purple 49.

Intelligence Gathering and Tracking

As Chisei’s operative, Toji gathers personal records, follows leads, and supplies information for her investigations.

  • Uncovers connections between Asō Yoshino’s school history and the victims attributed to curse user ZZ 59.
  • Obtains a handwriting sample from the oldest living Kamo Clan member 75.
  • Identifies Junpei Yoshino from a surveillance photograph and supplies details about his household and facial scars 183.
  • Claims he can locate the Tombs of the Star Corridor by following traces left by people entering or leaving 199.
  • Drives skillfully with one hand after losing his left arm 132.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Inverted Spear of Heaven — A special-grade cursed tool that nullifies jujutsu. Toji uses it to pierce Gojo’s defenses and dispel Chisei’s reinforcement, then later to breach the Prison Realm’s seal 45 46 206.
  • Playful Cloud — A special-grade cursed tool shaped like a three-section staff; remains his personal property rather than part of Chisei’s donations to Jujutsu High 158.
  • Tachi/katana — Used during his initial attempt to capture Chisei and alongside the Inverted Spear of Heaven 15 16 46.
  • Small dagger — Used to stab Gojo’s forehead. Using this rather than the Inverted Spear of Heaven leaves Gojo able to activate Reverse Cursed Technique 45 48 51.
  • Handgun — Readied against Riko Amanai before Chisei interrupts him in the Tombs of the Star Corridor 46.
  • Chain — Attached to the Inverted Spear of Heaven for ranged attacks 47.
  • Weapon-storage cursed spirit — Stores his weapons; Toji draws a large blade from its mouth and later keeps the spirit inside his abdomen 47 158.
  • Prosthetic limb and disguise accessories — Help conceal his identity while he is officially considered dead 130.

Relationships

  • Miwa Chisei — Initially his bounty target, later his rescuer and employer. He calls her “boss,” serves as her right-hand man for years, and assists her intelligence operations 15 53 117.
  • Satoru Gojo — Former assassination opponent, Megumi’s guardian, and later an uneasy ally. Their cooperation retains a persistent edge of mockery and threats 45 53 73 202.
  • Megumi Fushiguro — Biological son. Toji secretly sends him money but avoids acknowledging him until Chisei and Gojo arrange their reunion 33 200.
  • Tsumiki Fushiguro — Stepdaughter. Her tentative greeting of “Dad” and insistence that he never abandon them again help welcome him back into the family 33 203.
  • Megumi’s biological mother — Softened Toji’s personality before dying shortly after their son’s birth 33.
  • Tsumiki’s biological mother — Toji’s subsequent wife; he and Megumi took the Fushiguro surname after he married into her household 33.
  • Suguru Geto — Opponent during the Star Plasma Vessel incident and later a collaborator. Geto remains teasingly skeptical about Toji’s reform 46 199.
  • Naobito Zenin — Head of Toji’s former clan. Expresses anger over Megumi being entrusted to Gojo, but reacts seriously to learning Toji survived 131.
  • Naoya Zenin — Feared Toji from childhood despite looking down on most people; later represents a potential obstacle to Megumi inheriting the clan leadership 130 132.
  • Maki Zenin — A fellow Zenin with Heavenly Restriction whom Toji describes as a good child; he recognizes the clan’s prejudice against her 117.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Bounty on Miwa Chisei

  • Pursues Chisei for a 200-million-yen live-capture bounty, overpowering her initial restraints and forcing her to use blood sacrifices to keep fighting 15 16.
  • Withdraws after fifteen minutes when Gojo arrives, judging a successful capture and escape no longer feasible 16.
  • Later seeks Chisei’s help locating a cursed tool. She deliberately gives him the wrong direction, but he finds it nonetheless 34 39.
  • Claims the Gojo Clan posted her bounty as part of a paid misinformation job. He later says an unnamed middleman hired him and rules out the Gojo Clan as the source 39 59.
  • Trades information about Gojo’s defenses for help choosing Tsumiki’s birthday present, prompting Chisei to suspect that he is targeting Gojo 39 40.

Star Plasma Vessel Incident

  • Uses the Inverted Spear of Heaven to stab Gojo through the neck, follows with a dagger strike to the head, and proceeds toward Riko Amanai 45.
  • Is intercepted by Chisei in the Tombs of the Star Corridor. She restrains him while Geto escorts Riko to safety 46 47.
  • Faces the recovered Gojo and survives Red, but cannot evade Hollow Purple 48 49.
  • Survives through Chisei’s intervention: Her attempt to alter and cancel his fate accidentally produces Reverse Cursed Technique, healing his fatal wound without consuming her lifespan. His left arm remains lost 50 52.
  • Accepts work under Chisei. A staged death subsequently ends Jujutsu Society’s pursuit of him 53 56.

Chisei’s Intelligence Operations

  • Investigates the ZZ murders and accompanies Chisei into the Kamo Clan’s hidden burial grounds, where an attacker steals the talisman-covered urn they uncover 59 75.
  • Remains necessary to Chisei’s Tokyo operations even when she considers moving him to Kyoto to oversee her intelligence network 117.
  • Locates the ritual site containing Riona’s severed head and later participates in discussions about the exploitation of Miwa family techniques 128 129.
  • Continues covert work while publicly presumed dead, including security duty at Riona’s funeral and identifying Junpei Yoshino 130 183.

Family Reunion

  • Avoids Megumi during a dangerous encounter involving Sukuna, hiding behind a tree when he sees his son 176.
  • Meets Megumi at Jujutsu High under Gojo’s joking introduction of “Little Er.” Chisei subsequently reveals his identity and explains his survival 199 200.
  • Returns to the Fushiguro home for a meal, apologizes to both children, and is cautiously welcomed back 203.

Prison Realm and Shibuya

  • Is assigned to release anyone sealed in the Prison Realm after Tengen confirms that the Inverted Spear of Heaven can undo its barrier technique 201 202.
  • Exploits his presumed death and lack of cursed energy to enter the Shibuya trap undetected 202 204.
  • Strikes the Prison Realm while Chisei’s laughter masks his approach, cracking its seal and enabling Gojo’s escape. Kenjaku is shocked that both Toji and his supposedly destroyed cursed tool still exist 205 206.

Later Appearance

  • Waits with Gojo, Geto, and Shoko outside the Miwa family restoration ceremony. When Chisei’s labor begins, Toji goes to retrieve the car 220.
