Background / History

Four Great Families and Exile

Five hundred years before the present story, the Miwa family belonged to the Four Great Families that ruled Jujutsu Society. Its disappearance from that governing arrangement ushered in the era of the Three Great Families. Initially, the precise reason was unknown; the most widely circulated explanation was that the family had been expelled because its jujutsu specifically targeted people 2.

Tengen later reveals that the family withdrew to protect itself after fighting Kenjaku’s mismatched-eyed sorcerer alongside the Gojo Clan. Kenjaku had created that being from the organs and blood of dozens of outstanding Miwa and Gojo sorcerers, producing power Tengen compared to Ryomen Sukuna at his peak. Tengen describes the Miwa family as likely the strongest of the Four Great Families at that time 208.

The historical family head, Miwa Tenba, fought to protect younger sorcerers and the next generation. In an initial victory in which the Four Great Families killed nearly three hundred curse users and cursed spirits, thirteen of the twenty allied dead belonged to the Miwa bloodline. The Miwa family held the front line with its hand-to-hand combat skills, while the Gojo Clan specialized in long-range attacks 227.

After learning that Kenjaku had discovered the bloodline’s secret, Tenba ordered the other three families to prepare their defenses while the Miwa family confronted the mismatched-eyed curse user. He asked Tengen to announce the family’s withdrawal if he did not return, protect its descendants, and preserve the possibility that a future Miwa would lead the family back to its peak. The subsequent battle involved Miwa sorcerers sacrificing themselves to entrust greater power to Tenba, while Kenjaku sought to exploit their sacrificial secret technique 227 228.

The Gojo Clan was historically close to the Miwa family. According to Satoru Gojo, the first Six Eyes bearer appeared in the Gojo Clan when the Miwa family was expelled. No surviving Gojo records explained the coincidence, and Satoru initially did not know whether the events were connected 2. Tengen later reveals that the Miwa family entrusted the defeated sorcerer’s skull to the Gojo Clan, that the cursed object kept by the clan was one of the sorcerer’s eyeballs, and that the historical Demon Eyes had foreseen Satoru and Chisei 208.

After its withdrawal, the family blended into ordinary society while enduring open and covert suppression. Its historical records were destroyed, its ancestral home and shrine were lost, and its descendants gradually dwindled. The main family nevertheless retained its genealogy and the Sun and Moon Charm 2 3 4 11.

Succession and the Branch Family Rift

The main family’s ancestors passed down an injunction never to return to Jujutsu Society. Chisei’s father, Miwa Tatsuki, upheld that position and opposed Miwa Yuto’s efforts to restore the family’s standing through ties with the Three Great Families 12 20 83.

Kamo Tetsuya offered protection to Yuto and his daughter, Riona, and secretly supported Yuto’s restoration plans. He insisted that the main family had to share the ambition for the effort to count as restoring the Miwa family, bringing Yuto into conflict with Chisei’s father 12.

Chisei’s father died the year before the story, leaving his only child as family head. Chisei later recalled that his organs began failing three months after a heated argument with Yuto. Although doctors diagnosed advanced cancer, his regular medical examinations made her suspect branch-family involvement; the circumstances described do not independently confirm that suspicion 3 20.

Yuto’s resentment also involved the death of Miwa Ayaki, Riona’s mother, when Riona was three. He blamed the main family’s weakness and its decision to live among ordinary people, arguing that the Miwa bloodline should have stood together as a jujutsu family 144.

Return to Jujutsu High

Chisei initially refused recruitment, prioritizing survival and preservation of the family line over a sorcerer’s career. Riona, by contrast, sought to return the family to Jujutsu Society and demanded the Sun and Moon Charm. Chisei rejected her claim and accused the branch family of wanting to become the new main family 2 11 14 20.

Kamo Tetsuya placed a two-hundred-million-yen bounty for Chisei’s capture alive. After Toji Fushiguro nearly killed her while pursuing it, Chisei accepted enrollment at Jujutsu High for protection and to prevent the branch family’s ambitions from going unchallenged 13 15 17 20 22.

Gojo Yu later revealed that he had arranged Chisei’s recruitment to test the Zenin and Kamo clans’ attitudes toward the Miwa family, partly drawing attention away from Satoru. Chisei warned him against using her in the Three Great Families’ political struggles 27.

As Chisei’s strength grew, the Jujutsu Higher-Ups demanded that she stop outside work and disclose the family’s secret techniques. She rejected their authority to compel such disclosure, threatened to become a curse user if imprisoned, and warned that she could bring Jujutsu Society down with her. The confrontation forced the elders to acknowledge that Grade 1 sorcerers could no longer subdue her 103.

Riona’s Death and the Yasohachi Bridge Investigation

Chisei recognized the family’s Counter-Curse on an ordinary victim of the Yasohachi Bridge incident. She subsequently discovered that Miwa lives had been used to strengthen a special grade cursed spirit until it could deploy a domain, with a Counter-Curse inscribed into its cursed power to affect ordinary people 124 128.

Before dying, Riona used Judgment to make contact with her remains restore and strengthen Chisei’s cursed energy. Her life became the price of that final blessing. Although the two had long been rivals, Chisei concluded that Riona trusted her to shoulder the family’s future and had never intended to truly harm her or those she loved 129.

Chisei confronted the higher-ups over Riona’s death and the exploitation of the family’s jujutsu, announcing that she would question the Kamo, Gojo, and Zenin clans as well as Yuto. Satoru publicly submitted the Gojo Clan to her questioning, and Kamo Tetsuya agreed that his clan would cooperate. Chisei honored Riona as an outstanding member of the Miwa bloodline and warned that she would never forgive anyone who used a family member 127.

Despite their antagonism, Chisei personally funded and presided over Riona’s funeral. With no body remaining for burial and Yuto bedridden by grief, Chisei was the only family member present. She rejected the Kamo Clan head’s suggestion that his clan should have arranged the funeral, insisting that Riona belonged to the Miwa family regardless of marriage or surname 130.

Following the later conflict, Yuto was placed under Jujutsu Society supervision, arrested, and sentenced to life imprisonment. When the higher-ups blamed the Miwa family for the losses, Satoru and Suguru Geto challenged them. Chisei nevertheless accepted the Medical Group’s invitation to help save people as compensation 146.

Kenjaku’s Exploitation of the Bloodline

Chisei’s investigation with Kato Teru established that the woman Kenjaku used in his cursed-womb experiments belonged to the Miwa bloodline. She had married into the Kato family and used her lifespan to alter its hereditary illness before being captured, depriving her of the few remaining years she could have spent with her family 158.

Chisei continued searching for Kamo Tetsuya and enlisted Jujutsu High’s assistance. In support of their long-term cooperation, she and Mei Mei arranged cursed tool donations supplied through the Zenin Clan 158.

Evidence later suggested that someone had controlled Tetsuya’s body since childhood. Chisei could not read his fate beyond age ten, the same age at which his cursed energy and personality changed dramatically. Kenjaku subsequently admitted sacrificing members of the Miwa family to obtain their powers and demonstrated the ability to attack Chisei’s shadow and wield related shadow power 173 193.

After Kenjaku’s capture, Chisei presented his brain to the higher-ups and accused him of manipulating them against her family. Satoru announced Jujutsu High’s support and warned against further insults. The elders recognized that Chisei had the backing of the great families and powerful sorcerers, making continued suppression increasingly untenable 209.

Restoration of the Four Great Families

After learning the truth of the family’s withdrawal from Tengen, Chisei asked him to restore its place in Jujutsu Society. He agreed to reinstate the Miwa family among the Four Great Families. When Chisei proposed buying an estate and gathering the family’s sorcerers, Satoru revealed that he had already prepared an estate near the Gojo Main House 208.

Over six months, Chisei located seven branches of the family’s bloodline, nineteen people in all. The Main Family mansion became a shared home filled with activity. She then informed Tengen that the family was ready to reclaim its place, honoring the ancestors and paying homage to heaven 220.

The gathered descendants, ranging from young children to elderly members and sharing the family’s crimson eyes, bowed to Chisei as family head. She formally declared that the Miwa family had reclaimed its rightful place 220.

Organization and Members

Leadership and Succession

  • Sun and Moon Charm: Possession of this main-family token identifies the family head. It passed from Chisei’s father to Chisei, his only child. It also conceals secrets of the family’s sacrificial jujutsu 3 11 129.
  • Main family: Retains a recorded genealogy despite the family’s decline. Chisei is one of its few surviving blood descendants 2 11.
  • Branch family: Yuto and Riona originally pursued restoration through Kamo patronage. Chisei permitted them to seek status independently but refused to surrender main-family property. Riona later died, while Yuto was sentenced to life imprisonment 11 12 129 146.
  • Dispersed relatives: Some branches fully integrated into ordinary society and gradually lost contact with the main family. Branch relatives such as Miwa Uka were not necessarily recorded in the main-family genealogy 117.
  • Adopted family: Chisei explicitly recognizes Uka’s adopted daughter Kasumi as family despite her lack of the bloodline’s characteristic cursed energy 117 118 165.
  • Preservation of the lineage: Chisei initially intended to find a husband willing to marry into the family, raise descendants, and pass down its Omamori. She later becomes pregnant with Satoru Gojo’s child 14 28 209.
  • Reunification: Chisei gathers nineteen people from seven branches of the bloodline at the restored Main Family mansion 220.

Distinguishing Traits

  • Crimson eyes: The family’s recognizable mark, described as blood-red eyes cursed by the demon king. Chisei’s eyes caused her to be bullied and called a monster at ordinary school. The reunited blood descendants also display crimson eyes 2 3 220.
  • Rare pink eyes: Occasionally documented in family history as anomalies. Riona claimed that they marked her as a “child of fortune” and matched the first generation’s eye color; Chisei dismissed the auspicious interpretation 11.
  • Historically weak cursed energy: Even during the Four Great Families era, the family was known for ordinarily weak cursed energy. Chisei’s unusually large reserves distinguish her from that historical pattern 8 19.
  • Demon Eyes: Tengen identifies this designation with a Miwa sorcerer born with immense cursed energy despite the family’s usual weakness in that respect. The historical Demon Eyes foresaw Satoru and Chisei 208.
  • Family-specific cursed energy: Satoru recognizes that Kasumi lacks the Miwa family’s characteristic cursed energy, consistent with her adopted rather than biological connection to the bloodline 118.

Abilities & Skills

Divination

The family’s divination reads a person’s past and future through traces they leave behind 2 7 28.

  • Handwriting medium: A written question or a few characters can supply the trace needed for a reading 2 11 25.
  • Intelligence gathering: Chisei and Mei Mei commercialize readings by extracting information from targets’ handwriting. Riona’s readings cover a shorter period and are less accurate than Chisei’s 28.
  • Self-reading restriction: Miwa sorcerers cannot tell their own fortunes 4.
  • Family restriction: Members ordinarily cannot read their own family’s fates. Exceptionally gifted users can read collateral relatives; Chisei states that she is only the third such user in the family’s history 11.
  • Perceptual cost: The power is described as gradually dulling its user’s perception of their surroundings 7.
  • Six Eyes prediction: The Miwa family helped the Gojo Clan predict the range of time in which a Six Eyes bearer would be born. This service was one reason for the Gojo Clan’s continued support and interest in a marriage alliance 134.
  • Interrupted fate: Chisei cannot read Kamo Tetsuya’s fate beyond age ten, contributing to her suspicion that another entity has been controlling his body 173.

Judgment

Judgment imposes an outcome that activates under specified conditions, using sacrificed bodily tissue and cursed energy 4 25.

  • Sacrificial materials: Hair, fingernail clippings, and blood can serve as offerings. Separated tissue must be recent and still “alive” 4 8 15.
  • Variable cost: The required sacrifice depends on the cursed energy of both user and target. Chisei states that one fingernail clipping could sentence a Semi-Grade 1 cursed spirit to death, while five merely caused Gojo to be splashed with vegetable water 4.
  • Conditional harm: Chisei severs a man’s lower leg when he takes another step after her warning 5.
  • Restraint and relocation: Demonstrated effects include freezing a target in place, making a fleeing killer appear before Chisei on his next blink, and allowing Chisei to escape Gojo’s grasp 8 15 25.
  • Self-enhancement: Judgment can increase speed and physical strength or impose immovability on the user 15 16 45 47.
  • Resistance: Toji tears apart a restraint through physical strength alone. The Inverted Spear of Heaven can also prevent Chisei from using further jujutsu 15 48.
  • Transcending death: A Judgment can remain effective beyond the user’s death. Riona’s final technique activates when Chisei touches her remains, restoring and increasing Chisei’s cursed energy at the cost of Riona’s life 129.

Divination Reversal

At sufficient mastery, divination can alter a weaker target’s past and future rather than merely observe them 19.

  • Requirements: Both the user’s cursed energy and jujutsu proficiency must exceed the target’s 19.
  • Demonstrated threat: Chisei threatens to make Riona’s hair loss begin retroactively at age ten 19.
  • Variable price: Riona fears a lifespan cost, but Chisei says affecting someone at Riona’s level would require only several days of cursed-energy recovery 19.
  • Limits of protection: Chisei attempts to change Toji’s fate during Gojo’s attack, but Toji is still mortally wounded 49.
  • Lifespan-funded alteration: The Miwa woman who married into the Kato family used her lifespan to alter its hereditary illness 158.

Manifestation of Inner Demons

The family’s strongest offensive jujutsu awakens fear and can rob a target of reason through a ghostly manifestation of inner demons 46.

  • Concealed nature: Chisei initially identifies it as an illusion-like ghost rather than a cursed spirit. She later reveals that this description hides its true nature: the shadow embodies the family’s soul power and serves as a medium for communicating with Emperor Sutoku 46 124.
  • Application: The manifestation grips Toji’s neck and prevents him from breathing 46.
  • Interaction with cursed tools: The Inverted Spear of Heaven passes through the apparition without dispelling its effect 46.
  • Cost and limits: It consumes large quantities of blood and cursed energy. Chisei initially reserves it for emergencies and expects Toji to break free because she is not yet strong enough 46.
  • Cursed spirit targets: Chisei uses the shadow to terrorize a special grade cursed spirit posing as Satoru. Its absorption of her cursed energy briefly confuses the shadow, but an additional blood offering drives the manifestation to attack again 81.
  • Soul interaction: Ordinary cursed energy and jujutsu cannot touch the shadow, but opponents capable of touching souls can injure it and transmit pain and damage to Chisei 124 139.
  • Materialization and fusion: The shadow can wield the Profound Sky Severer and merge with Chisei. The convergence of illusion and reality turns the shadow into the family’s most powerful Judgment jujutsu 123.
  • Post-blessing growth: Nanami observes that Chisei’s shadow has become stronger after Riona’s final blessing 129 138.

Healing Limitations

  • Initial lack of healing: Chisei initially cannot use Judgment or Divination to treat injuries because cursed energy is negative energy 30.
  • Lifespan risk: Forcing positive energy into her blessing for Yamato Kaho backfires and costs Chisei part of her lifespan 8 30.
  • Reverse Cursed Technique development: Chisei seeks Shoko Ieiri’s guidance to combine healing with the family’s delayed-effect jujutsu. By her second year, she has become increasingly proficient with Reverse Cursed Technique 30 31 91.
  • Once-per-person restriction: Chisei states that she can use her Reverse Cursed Technique on the same person only once. She refuses to become an indiscriminate miracle healer because repeatable resurrection could encourage sorcerers to treat their lives as expendable 91.
  • Forbidden revival attempt: When Yu Haibara is brought to the morgue dead, Chisei invokes the family’s forbidden power to try to revive him. After she cuts her palm, a shadowy demon god pierces her chest and extracts a vivid red wisp. A brilliant flash follows, leaving Chisei standing without visible injury; the immediate scene does not establish the ultimate cost of the ritual 93.
  • Medical cooperation: Chisei later accepts the Medical Group’s invitation to help save people as compensation for losses attributed to the Miwa conflict 146.

Sacrificial Secret Technique

The family can use sacrifices to restore or increase cursed energy. These offerings can include ordinary people and cursed spirits, rather than only the user’s own tissue. The Sun and Moon Charm conceals secrets associated with this power 129.

  • Life as payment: Riona’s final Judgment uses her dying life as the price of Chisei’s empowerment 129.
  • Collective empowerment: Historical Miwa combatants sacrifice themselves to entrust power to Tenba during the battle against Kenjaku’s creation 228.
  • Exploitation by outsiders: Kenjaku sacrifices Miwa descendants to acquire their powers, including abilities related to the shadow 193.
  • Historical importance: Kenjaku explicitly covets the Miwa Family Sacrificial Secret Technique as a means to realize his ambitions 228.

Counter-Curse

The Counter-Curse is a Miwa family technique recognizable through its cursed markings. Chisei identifies it on A Ming after the Yasohachi Bridge incident and initially asks Satoru to conceal its connection to her family from Megumi and Tsumiki 124.

The perpetrators use Miwa lives to empower a special grade cursed spirit and inscribe Counter-Curse into its cursed power so that it feeds back into ordinary people. Affected patients retain normal bodily functions but remain unconscious 128 165.

Transcription

After receiving Riona’s blessing, Chisei learns Transcription, which reads thoughts and tampers with the brain’s instructions to the nerves, changing the target’s bodily actions 140.

  • Anticipation: Reading thoughts reveals an opponent’s intended next attack 140.
  • Action interference: Altered instructions can make an enemy’s attack endanger its own teammate, as demonstrated during Chisei’s battle with Mahito and Hanami 140.

Martial Combat

The historical family specialized in hand-to-hand combat and fought on the front line in the Four Great Families’ battles 227.

Chisei’s father trained her in martial arts for self-preservation. She combines physical combat with cursed-energy reinforcement, Black Flash, Judgment-enhanced movement, and scythe attacks. Her raw reinforced blows surprise Riona because she can strike powerfully without first strengthening herself through Judgment 9 29 30 47 138.

Equipment / Heirlooms

  • Sun and Moon Charm — Main-family proof of headship, black on one side and white on the other, threaded with a red cord. Riona’s attempt to obtain it makes it the central object of the succession dispute. It also conceals the family’s sacrificial secrets 3 11 20 129.
  • Main-family genealogy — Surviving register used by Chisei to challenge Riona’s claim to main-family authority. It does not necessarily include every collateral relative 11 13 117.
  • Previous head’s kimono — Dark garments favored by Chisei’s father as family head. Chisei alters and wears them as some of the few possessions remaining from her family 3 21.
  • Profound Sky Severer — Special grade cursed tool shaped as an enormous scythe, normally stored and wielded by the family’s shadow. Chisei uses it to cleave a domain, exorcise special grade cursed spirits, injure Mahito’s soul after applying her blood, and devour the cursed energy sustaining manipulated blood 123 139 157.
  • Remains of the mismatched-eyed sorcerer — The family entrusted the defeated sorcerer’s skull to the Gojo Clan after the historical battle. Tengen identifies the Gojo Clan’s associated cursed object as an eyeball from that sorcerer 208.

Relationships

  • Gojo Clan — Historical ally that maintained occasional contact after the withdrawal. Chisei’s father asked the clan to protect her, though her later request for help funding his funeral received no reply. Gojo Yu later explains that Miwa predictions of Six Eyes births and the prospect of a marriage alliance helped motivate the clan’s support. Satoru publicly supports Chisei’s investigation, prepares the restored family’s estate near his clan’s main house, and fathers the child she is carrying 2 3 10 127 134 208 209.
  • Jujutsu Society — Former governing sphere from which the family withdrew and within which it subsequently faced suppression. Its higher-ups recalled Miwa descendants, but Chisei’s admission divided them evenly between support and opposition. Later attempts to demand the family’s techniques and blame it for casualties provoke open resistance. Tengen eventually approves its restoration among the Four Great Families 2 3 11 22 103 146 208.
  • Kamo Clan / Kamo Tetsuya — Patron of Yuto and Riona’s original branch-family ambitions. Tetsuya secretly supported restoration, sponsored Chisei’s capture-alive bounty, and advised Riona to undermine her strategically. The investigation later exposes the role of the entity controlling Tetsuya’s body and its exploitation of the Miwa bloodline. Chisei distinguishes this enemy from other Kamo members and regards the younger Noritoshi as a potentially better future leader 12 13 39 164 173 193 201.
  • Zenin Clan — Alongside the Kamo Clan, originally hostile toward the Gojo Clan’s continuing Miwa ties. Its leadership disputes Gojo Yu’s effort to bring Chisei into Jujutsu High. Chisei later includes the clan in her investigation and obtains cursed tools through it for donations to Jujutsu High 2 27 127 158.
  • Mei Mei — Chisei’s business partner, supplying clients and connections for intelligence derived from Miwa divination in exchange for seventy percent of the profits. She later helps arrange cursed tool donations supporting cooperation with Jujutsu High 28 158.
  • Toji Fushiguro — Initially the bounty hunter who nearly kills Chisei, later her trusted right-hand man in business and intelligence work. Chisei considers assigning him to oversee her Kyoto network but continues to need him in Tokyo 15 117.
  • Jujutsu High / Suguru Geto’s tutoring organization — Source of protection and trusted allies for Chisei. She enlists its members in the search for Tetsuya, supplies cursed tools, and cooperates with Geto’s extracurricular tutoring organization on intelligence-gathering missions. Satoru formally announces Jujutsu High’s support for her family before the higher-ups 22 158 166 209.
  • Kato family — Linked to the Miwa family through the red-eyed ancestor exploited by Kenjaku. Kato Teru commissions Chisei’s investigation and plans to attack Kamo business interests after learning the truth 71 158.
  • Kenjaku — Longstanding enemy who exploits the family’s blood, organs, sacrifices, and soul-related techniques. His historical creation contributed to its withdrawal, and his later schemes target its remaining descendants and Chisei herself 158 193 204 208 228.
  • Tengen — Historical confidant of Tenba, who asked him to safeguard the descendants and preserve hope of the family’s return. Tengen later explains the suppressed history to Chisei and Satoru and agrees to restore the Miwa family’s former standing 201 208 227.
