Appearance

  • Black hair distinguishes him from his silver-haired best friend, Satoru Gojo 1.
  • Narrow, foxlike eyes frequently curve when he smiles or teases others 1 10 35.
  • Gentle smiles and an amiable expression accompany both his polite exchanges and his mischief 17 24 35.
  • Hair worn in a bun and a dark gray Jujutsu Empowerment Department uniform characterize his adult appearance. The uniform resembles Jujutsu High’s, differing principally in color 109.
  • During his ideological crisis, his face becomes slightly gaunt, although he continues concealing his distress behind familiar smiles 90.

Personality

Geto initially appears more levelheaded than Gojo. He asks strangers for directions politely, restrains Gojo when he threatens Chisei, and encourages Gojo to win her trust rather than force her enrollment. He also recognizes that Chisei has endured hardship and objects to Gojo’s wish to make her cry 1 6 10.

His sensible demeanor conceals a mischievous streak. He volunteers for the recruitment mission largely to watch Gojo get put in his place, skips classes with him, and joins fights that damage school property. His seemingly considerate remarks can be insulting: when Gojo mocks Utahime Iori, Geto admonishes him for “picking on the weak,” offending her as well 3 10 36 38.

Geto is perceptive about his friends’ feelings. He notices Gojo’s concern for Chisei beneath their constant arguing and recognizes Chisei’s distress during the confrontation with Toji. In danger, he puts that awareness into action by protecting Riko, intervening for Chisei, and reassuring her that they will help Gojo 10 17 45 46.

Convictions and Ideological Crisis

Geto initially believes that the strong have a duty to protect the weak. Being protected himself during the Star Plasma Vessel incident unsettles that belief, while Gojo’s subsequent growth makes him increasingly conscious of the gap between them. He pushes himself toward Special Grade partly to regain their former ability to undertake missions together 52 63 84.

The betrayal of a pregnant woman he tries to rescue severely damages his faith in ordinary people. His advancement fails to resolve his uncertainty about why he fights, and he begins hiding his distress even from Gojo. After discussing the origins of cursed spirits with Yuki Tsukumo, he proposes eliminating all ordinary humans so that only sorcerers remain. Witnessing Haibara’s death and Chisei’s intervention further intensifies his resentment, leading him to privately describe non-sorcerers as “monkeys” 88 89 90 94.

Chisei and Gojo challenge the assumptions underlying this resentment. Chisei emphasizes that both sorcerers and ordinary people can be good or evil, and that ordinary humans do not deliberately create cursed spirits. During the rescue of Nanako and Mimiko, Geto remembers both her advice and a ramen shop worker’s small kindness. He rejects indiscriminate retaliation, reports the abusers to the police, and accepts that he can act according to his own judgment without condemning an entire group 96 97 98.

Adult Priorities and Mischief

As an adult, Geto channels his concern for fellow sorcerers into training that improves their chances of survival. He is troubled by the need to rush Yuta Okkotsu into combat and by Chisei’s decision to treat fatal injuries on the front lines 105 109 136.

His maturity does not eliminate his scheming or love of gossip. He continues teasing Gojo and Chisei about their relationship, sometimes misreads romantic situations, and admits without embarrassment that he and Gojo used the higher-ups’ approval to build their strength while lowering their guard 67 109 150 154 171. Despite years of giving romantic advice, he has little personal experience and no partner or romantic interest identified when Gojo questions him about it 148 211.

Abilities & Skills

Cursed Spirit Control

Geto summons and directs cursed spirits for combat, defense, transportation, and escort duties 9 36 46 47.

  • Defense: Releases spirits to block Gojo’s Cursed Technique Lapse: Blue during their fight at the school entrance 36.
  • Distraction and ambush: Fills Gojo’s field of vision with spirits before launching a sneak attack with a long-necked spirit 36.
  • Transportation: Arrives at Chisei’s confrontation with a curse user riding a cursed spirit 9.
  • Protection and evacuation: Assigns spirits to protect Riko Amanai and later escort her away from Toji 46 47.
  • Limits: Chisei tears apart one of his Grade 1 spirits, while Gojo crushes an ambushing spirit. His summons are not invulnerable 36.
  • Absorption: Compresses cursed spirits into black spheres through a force resembling a black hole in his palm, then swallows them. Every spirit he absorbs must be consumed this way 63.
  • Taste and burden: Describes the spheres as tasting like a rag used to clean up vomit and excrement. Although he says he is accustomed to it, the repeated consumption is an unpleasant part of his technique 63.
  • Connection medium: Explains that the swallowed spheres serve as his medium for connecting with cursed spirits 113.
  • Grade 1 subjugation: Easily absorbs a powerful Grade 1 spirit that has killed multiple villagers 97.
  • Search and aerial deployment: Releases dozens of spirits to locate students inside the Goodwill Event’s Curtain while flying on a white, birdlike spirit 193.
  • Large-scale combat: Fields a mass of spirits against Dagon’s water and shikigami, with a thousand spirits subsequently converging for Uzumaki 193.
  • Communication: An absorbed Grade 1 spirit can communicate simple information to him, allowing Geto to learn about its memories and previous encounters 171.

Rainbow Dragon

Rainbow Dragon is described as the toughest cursed spirit in Geto’s collection. He deploys it when Toji attacks Chisei with the Inverted Spear of Heaven 46.

  • Its speed is insufficient to intercept Toji’s initial attack, despite Geto’s urgent effort to protect Chisei 46.
  • During the same confrontation, another summoned spirit bites Toji’s arm and prevents a follow-up attack, allowing Geto to pull Chisei free 46.
  • It is identified as a special grade cursed spirit during the battle against Dagon 193.
  • Geto uses it to bind Dagon while Slit-Mouthed Woman attacks. Dagon’s desperate pulling begins to overcome even Rainbow Dragon’s exceptional toughness 193.

Slit-Mouthed Woman

  • A special grade imaginary cursed spirit summoned against Dagon 193.
  • Manifests enormous scissors that slice Dagon while Rainbow Dragon restrains it 193.

Maximum Technique: Uzumaki

Geto demonstrates Cursed Spirit Manipulation: Maximum Technique—Uzumaki against Dagon. A thousand surrounding cursed spirits converge into a gigantic black vortex, which releases an enormous surge of energy that engulfs Dagon’s torrent. The technique’s force shakes the forest, and Dagon is confirmed exorcised afterward 193 194.

Uzumaki expends cursed spirits, but Geto’s later-revealed Reverse Jujutsu means that absorbing replacements is not necessarily his only method of restoring his stock 195.

Close-Range Intervention

  • Dodges Chisei’s attack during the three-way brawl at Jujutsu High’s entrance 36.
  • Physically pulls Chisei backward to free her mangled hands from the Inverted Spear of Heaven 46.

Reverse Cursed Technique / Reverse Jujutsu

  • Despite being regarded as a genius alongside Gojo, Geto has not figured out Reverse Cursed Technique when Chisei seeks instruction from Shoko Ieiri 31.
  • He still has not mastered it when Yuta learns it after Rika’s curse is lifted. Gojo mocks him for failing despite ten years of Shoko’s instruction 148.
  • Later reveals a specialized Reverse Jujutsu that works only on cursed spirits, demonstrated by enveloping Rika in pale golden cursed energy and instantly restoring her to peak condition 194.
  • Can restore any cursed spirit to full health and revive dead cursed spirits he previously absorbed 194.
  • This ability allows his collection to keep growing rather than being permanently depleted through ordinary losses or Uzumaki expenditure. Sealing remains an exception to that recoverability 195.
  • No ability to heal humans with this technique is demonstrated; its cursed-spirit-only limitation becomes a subject of Gojo’s teasing 194 195.

Cursed Energy Reserves

Geto possesses enormous cursed energy reserves, explicitly exceeding Gojo’s raw reserves. Gojo’s exceptional efficiency nevertheless allows him to use his own techniques at almost no cost. Yuta’s initial reserves are described as almost as great as Geto’s 110 113.

Cursed Spirit Expertise and Instruction

Geto is consulted as an expert on cursed spirits, including the mechanics of binding media, Rika’s unusual emotional attachment, and the possibility of training Yuta to control her power 113 115.

  • Recognizes that the nationwide wave of supposed special grade spirits consists of Grade 1 spirits granted domain abilities, and distinguishes them from stronger, registered special grades 135.
  • Helps deduce that Yuta, rather than Rika, created the powerful curse binding them 136.
  • Determines that the small Grade 4 Rika remaining after the curse is lifted can grow by absorbing Yuta’s matching cursed energy 148.
  • Establishes and leads follow-up training for graduated sorcerers, improving their survival rate over the years 105 109.
  • Regularly covers Gojo’s classes while maintaining responsibility for his own department and its new recruits 109 113 220.

Background / History

Early Life

Geto comes from an ordinary, non-sorcerer family. He could see strange beings as a child, but his parents dismissed his accounts as childhood imagination. He discovered his ability to absorb cursed spirits around middle school and was surprised to learn that Jujutsu High existed when he was recruited 63.

He and Gojo did not initially get along after entering school. As they became acquainted during their first year, they began regularly undertaking missions together 63.

Recruiting Miwa Chisei

Geto accompanies Gojo to Shinjuku to recruit Chisei for Jujutsu High. He handles the polite introductions, stops Gojo from hitting her, and pays her fifty-thousand-yen consultation fee using Gojo’s wallet. Chisei’s question—“Who the hell are you?”—sends him into uncontrollable laughter 1.

Chisei gives Geto a free reading after examining his handwriting. She predicts that he will face a life-changing crossroads in one year, with either death or a chance of survival depending on his choice. He initially doubts her prediction, but becomes more respectful of the Miwa family’s abilities after her warning about Gojo’s departure comes true. Despite her refusal to enroll, he volunteers to continue helping with the mission 2 3.

Friendship and School Life

Geto visits Chisei’s apartment with milk as a gift and receives a warmer welcome than Gojo. After an emergency assignment takes the boys away, he joins the pursuit of Yamato Kaho’s killer and learns about Chisei’s two-hundred-million-yen bounty 6 7 8 9.

At school, he urges Gojo to acknowledge his concern for Chisei, only for their conversation to escalate into a fight stopped by Masamichi Yaga. Later, he lends the exhausted Gojo his bed while Chisei recovers in the neighboring room 10 17.

Once Chisei enrolls, Geto and Gojo propose a training match with the first-years. He subsequently joins another destructive brawl with Gojo and Chisei, earning Yaga’s punishment and an order to write an apology. He also explains that Chisei’s differently colored uniform belt marks her for special attention 24 36 37.

Riko Amanai’s Protection Mission

Geto and Gojo travel to Okinawa while the first-years monitor Naha Airport for a Time Vessel Association threat. At Gojo’s prompting, Geto calls Chisei and describes their beach activities and hotel plans; he then texts her to reveal that Gojo deliberately arranged the call 42.

When the groups reunite, Geto gives Chisei cookies bought by Gojo, although purchasing them was his own suggestion. He explains that Riko’s bounty expires at eleven and expects their return to Jujutsu High to improve their safety 44.

At the Tombs of the Star Corridor, Chisei interrupts Toji’s attempt to shoot Riko. Geto immediately summons protection for Riko and intervenes when Toji attacks Chisei. After learning that Gojo is badly injured, he promises they will help him. Chisei stays behind to delay Toji while Geto summons spirits to escort Riko away 46 47.

After the fight, Geto reunites with Gojo and physically checks that he is alive. He feels guilty about leaving an injured first-year to face Toji, but Chisei thanks him for their coordination. He confirms that other sorcerers are protecting Riko and directs Chisei to Shoko for treatment. His subsequent discussion with Gojo raises the possibility that Chisei changed Toji’s fate, with Geto observing that such an ability must carry serious side effects 51.

The incident also prompts Geto to question his own place among the strong. Gojo’s continued use of “let’s” reassures him of their partnership, but Gojo’s mastery of Reverse Cursed Technique eventually ends their arrangement as fixed mission partners 52 63.

Wakkanai Trip and Romantic Meddling

During a school trip to Wakkanai, Geto partners with Chisei for a cursed-spirit sweep. She watches him absorb spirits for the first time and learns about their revolting taste and his ordinary family background. Later, Chisei and Nanami bring spirits to him to replenish his collection 63 65.

Geto’s amusement at Gojo and Chisei’s strained interactions leads him to imagine romantic explanations for their arguments. After he and Gojo miss their flight, they follow Chisei downtown, where Mei Mei proposes using them as assistants or bodyguards for an intelligence negotiation 67 69.

Geto later jokingly suggests that Gojo make Chisei fall for him and then reject her. Gojo takes the idea seriously, much to Geto’s eventual regret. Geto advises him to place kindness ahead of teasing, discovers that Nanami has no romantic interest in Chisei, and warns Gojo that the prank could make her genuinely furious 74 78 84 85 86.

Special Grade Promotion and Betrayal

While preparing for his promotion assignment, Geto absorbs cursed spirits at a pace that worries Shoko. Gojo remains confident in him and looks forward to undertaking missions together once Geto becomes Special Grade 84.

Geto successfully completes the assignment, which involves curse users and an apparent kidnapping. However, the pregnant woman he tries to save is collaborating with the perpetrators and detonates a suicide bomb at close range. He suffers catastrophic abdominal injuries, and Gojo brings Chisei to the hospital because Shoko is away 87 88.

Chisei uses Divination to alter his fatal outcome, layers a cancellation command over the life-shortening effect, and heals him with her specialized Reverse Cursed Technique. Geto wakes an hour later without even a scar. His physical recovery does not remove the emotional damage: he questions whether saving someone who later harms their rescuer is worthwhile. Chisei urges him not to judge his choice solely by its outcome or generalize from extremists 88.

His promotion to Special Grade is confirmed, but he remains unhappy and increasingly takes solo missions. He asks Gojo why he wanted to become Special Grade, finding little comfort in Gojo’s answer that it happened naturally 89.

The Crossroads and Rescue of Nanako and Mimiko

Yuki Tsukumo’s discussion of preventing cursed spirits gives Geto a new framework for his frustration. He proposes killing all ordinary humans, whose uncontrolled cursed energy produces spirits. When Chisei confronts him, he insists that Gojo alone is now the strongest, revealing how deeply their widening gap has affected him 90.

Haibara’s death and Chisei’s apparent reversal of it deepen his resentment of the cycle in which sorcerers die fighting spirits generated by the people they protect. He keeps Chisei’s intervention concealed until Gojo deduces what happened. Chisei and Gojo subsequently challenge his division of humanity into opposing groups, reminding him of ordinary people’s ignorance and the importance of individual choice 94 95 96.

On a later mission, Geto absorbs a Grade 1 spirit in a remote village and discovers two young girls imprisoned and abused in a cellar because the villagers consider their cursed energy monstrous. He nearly turns his murderous anger on the villagers, but remembers Chisei’s words and an ordinary worker’s kindness toward him earlier that day. Instead of killing them, he calls the police, offers evidence, and cooperates with the investigation 97.

The rescued girls introduce themselves as Mimiko and Nanako. Geto reassures them that they are safe and promises to visit. Gojo supports him and offers to use the Gojo Clan’s influence to ensure the ringleaders receive severe punishment 98.

Back at school, Chisei asks Geto to trace a word on her palm. His choice of “friends” settles the branching paths she had foreseen. She explains that her family’s technique does not identify a morally correct path, but that he has become certain of his choice. Gojo then interrupts to borrow shampoo and mistakenly concludes that Geto and Chisei are dating; both deny the misunderstanding 98 99.

Graduation and the Jujutsu Empowerment Department

After graduation, Geto adopts Nanako and Mimiko. With the higher-ups’ approval, he establishes the Jujutsu Empowerment Department, an organization dedicated to further training sorcerers and reducing their death rate. Its work improves graduates’ survival over the following years 105 109.

Geto continues living at Jujutsu High, where the department’s training grounds are situated, and visits the higher-ups’ office complex for administrative work. He also frequently substitutes for Gojo in the classroom 109 113.

Although the department initially operates under the higher-ups’ jurisdiction, Geto later reveals that he and Gojo planned this arrangement from graduation to avoid attracting suspicion while building strength. By the time they discuss their broader plans with Chisei, the department has quietly grown more powerful, and Geto has maintained friendly relations with Yuki Tsukumo 150.

His involvement in Gojo’s personal life continues. After urging him to acknowledge his feelings for Chisei, Geto is beaten unconscious during a drunken conversation and wakes with a badly swollen face. Gojo feigns ignorance, privately appreciates his help, and promises him a month without assigned missions 102. Years later, Geto still tries to encourage Chisei to consider Gojo, despite finding the prospect of Gojo as a husband and father difficult to picture 109.

Yuta Okkotsu and the Nationwide Cursed Spirit Incidents

Gojo and Chisei consult Geto about Yuta and Rika. He explains the importance of a binding medium and agrees that training Yuta to control Rika is worth attempting. At Chisei’s request, he promises to look after the pessimistic boy and provides supplementary instruction 113.

During the nationwide wave of domain-wielding cursed spirits, Geto’s increased absorption of spirits allows him to analyze the phenomenon closely. He identifies the attackers as Grade 1 spirits granted domain abilities and agrees with Chisei that someone is using Riona to exhaust the sorcerer population 135.

He and Gojo intend to accelerate Yuta’s training because they need his strength, but Geto is troubled by relying on a first-year’s curse for combat. Chisei’s theory that Yuta cursed Rika himself allows Geto to reconsider the source of the boy’s power and reassures him that lifting the curse need not end Yuta’s career 136.

While remaining in Tokyo, Geto encounters the red, octopus-shaped cursed womb later recognized as Dagon. Like the other intelligent special grades, it probes its opponent, delays them, and escapes 146 193.

After Rika’s curse is lifted, Geto and Gojo visit Yuta together. Geto discovers that the small remaining Rika can grow by absorbing Yuta’s cursed energy. Gojo’s mockery of Geto’s failure to learn Reverse Cursed Technique then provokes another fight, into which the two drag Yuta. Yaga orders all three to write apology essays 147 148.

Cooperation, Intelligence, and the Goodwill Event

Geto participates in discussions about cursed tool donations, joining Gojo in trying to obtain Toji’s Inverted Spear of Heaven and Playful Cloud. Chisei refuses to donate Toji’s personal possessions 158.

While discussing Yuji Itadori and the search for Kamo Tetsuya, Geto reports that his sorcerers have intensified their investigation. He also shares information from an absorbed Grade 1 spirit about a powerful sorcerer with red and blue eyes. Chisei connects the account to a suspected Miwa family object in the Gojo Clan’s storehouse, although Geto cautions that the historical connection is unverified 171.

For the Goodwill Event, Geto checks and releases the competition’s cursed spirits. He interrupts Gojo kissing Chisei and teases him, only to be provoked in return about having no one with whom to practice romance 191.

When the event is attacked, Geto enters the Curtain while leaving Gojo to dismantle the barrier. He dispatches spirits to search for students, identifies Yuta’s position, and prioritizes Megumi, Nobara, and Maki, whom he finds badly injured. He recognizes their attacker as the cursed womb encountered in Tokyo, now developed into Dagon 193.

Although he initially considers absorbing Dagon, he decides to exorcise it after seeing the injured students. He counters its shikigami with his own spirits, restrains it with Rainbow Dragon and Slit-Mouthed Woman, and unleashes Uzumaki. After exorcising Dagon, he reaches Yuta and restores the wounded Rika with his newly revealed cursed-spirit-specific Reverse Jujutsu 193 194.

Prison Realm, Shibuya, and Later Life

When the group learns of the Prison Realm’s alleged ability to seal someone indefinitely, Geto suggests consulting Tengen about how its seal can be undone. He participates in the discussion with Chisei, Gojo, and Toji that leads to their plan to approach Tengen 199.

During the Shibuya Station incident’s final stages, Geto arrives as Chisei restrains Mahito and cuts his soul with the Profound Sky Severer. The incident ends after the remaining transfigured humans are defeated 207.

After Gojo and Chisei marry, Geto continues enduring Gojo’s complaints and offering teasing advice, including suggesting that time apart might make the newlyweds appreciate each other more 211.

Near Chisei’s due date, Gojo repeatedly brings Geto and Shoko along to remain nearby. Geto initially prepares to leave for his afternoon class and offers Shoko transportation, but both recognize the unusual nervousness behind Gojo’s request that they stay 220.

Geto is present at the hospital when Chisei gives birth to a boy and a girl. Gojo’s panic and declaration that he intends to undergo a vasectomy lead to another threatened fight, which Shoko stops because Chisei needs quiet. Shoko’s remark that the children seem almost accidental leaves Geto with an uneasy feeling 221.

Relationships

  • Satoru Gojo — Best friend, classmate, and frequent mission partner. Geto restrains his worst impulses but also joins his pranks, class-skipping, and fights 1 6 10 23 36. Gojo’s rapid growth and their separation into solo missions contribute to Geto’s crisis, but their friendship survives it. They later coordinate a long-term strategy against the higher-ups, share teaching responsibilities, and remain close through Gojo’s marriage and the birth of his children 63 84 90 105 150 218 221.
  • Miwa Chisei — Junior whom he helps recruit. She initially regards him more favorably than Gojo; their relationship develops into teasing camaraderie, and Geto protects her during Toji’s attack 6 7 35 36 46. She saves his life after his promotion mission and challenges the ideas driving his resentment of non-sorcerers. Her advice helps him choose a nonviolent response to Nanako and Mimiko’s abusers, and her later reading confirms that his branching fate has settled 88 90 96 97 98. Gojo briefly mistakes their closeness for romance, but Chisei explicitly denies having romantic feelings for Geto 98 99.
  • Shoko Ieiri — Classmate who watches the boys’ antics with exasperation. Her mastery of Reverse Cursed Technique contrasts with Geto’s early inability to learn it 10 23 31. She worries about his overwork before his promotion and spends years trying to teach him healing. As adults, they remain close friends, join Chisei for drinks, and sometimes unite in exasperation at Gojo 84 135 148 220.
  • Masamichi Yaga — Teacher who trusts Geto to assist with recruitment but repeatedly disciplines him for fighting 3 10 36. Yaga is deeply concerned by his near-fatal promotion mission and its psychological consequences. He continues disciplining Geto’s destructive behavior even after Geto becomes an instructor himself 88 148.
  • Yu Haibara — Admiring first-year whom Geto gently encourages about future missions 24 42. Haibara’s death and Chisei’s intervention become a major source of anguish during Geto’s ideological crisis 94 95.
  • Riko Amanai — Girl under his and Gojo’s protection. Geto uses cursed spirits to shield and escort her during Toji’s attack 44 46 47. He later confirms that she is being protected by other sorcerers 51.
  • Toji Fushiguro — Initially an enemy who threatens Riko and injures Chisei. Geto intervenes with his spirits; Toji recognizes that the boy controlling them is no pushover 46. They later participate in shared discussions about the Prison Realm, though Geto and Gojo also try to obtain Toji’s prized cursed tools through Chisei’s donation program 158 199.
  • Utahime Iori — Fellow sorcerer who despises both Geto and Gojo; Geto’s ostensibly protective comments contribute to her dislike 38.
  • Nanako and Mimiko — Girls whom Geto rescues from imprisonment and abuse by villagers. He promises to visit them, receives their trust and affection, and adopts them after graduating 97 98 105.
  • Yuki Tsukumo — Fellow Special Grade sorcerer whose theories about preventing cursed spirits influence Geto during his crisis. She reports his extreme proposal to Chisei, but Geto remains on friendly terms with her over the following years 90 150.
  • Kento Nanami — Junior whose seriousness and coordination with Chisei impress Geto. Nanami clarifies that he has no romantic interest in her and warns Geto that his meddling could backfire 65 85. As adults, Geto regards him as dependable enough to turn to when his own marital advice to Gojo fails 211.
  • Yuta Okkotsu — Student whom Geto helps train in controlling Rika. Geto worries about pushing him into battle, recognizes the source of his power, and discovers how the smaller Rika can grow after the original curse is lifted 113 136 148. He later finds Yuta after the Goodwill Event battle and fully restores Rika 194.
  • Dagon — Intelligent special grade cursed spirit first encountered as a cursed womb in Tokyo. Geto later confronts its developed form after it injures students at the Goodwill Event and exorcises it with Uzumaki 146 193 194.
