Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Grade 2 39 First documented sorcerer classification. Receives the same grade as Kento Nanami, below Chisei’s Semi-Grade 1 classification; no earlier formal grade is given.
Judgment applied to a special-grade cursed object 79 Uses blood from her finger and tongue to force a Judgment onto the box containing a sealed finger of Ryomen Sukuna, despite powerful rejection and her willingness to risk shortening her life.
Semi-Grade 1 82 Advances after intensive summer training, shortly before school resumes. Her efforts are driven by resentment at Chisei’s promotion to Grade 1.
Post-graduation development 108 Her jujutsu has improved considerably during her work for the Higher-Ups, although Chisei still decisively overwhelms her in close combat. No higher formal grade is specified.
Final life-sacrifice Judgment 128 129 At the moment of death, establishes a delayed Judgment that restores and strengthens Chisei’s cursed energy when Chisei touches her remains. The price is measured against Riona’s life.

Background / History

Riona belongs to the collateral branch of the Miwa family, which descended from Emperor Sutoku and formerly held a place among Jujutsu Society’s Four Great Families. The family lost its standing and withdrew into ordinary society 2 11.

Kamo Tetsuya offered protection to Riona and her father, Miwa Yuto, when he was thirteen. He subsequently gave secret support to Yuto’s plan to restore the Miwa family’s standing. Chisei’s father opposed returning to Jujutsu Society and warned Yuto against it, creating a rift between the main and branch families 12.

Riona adopted the ambition of restoring the family and sought to become a Special Grade sorcerer. She regarded Chisei as an obstacle and wanted the Sun and Moon Charm, the main family’s proof of headship 11.

After graduation, Riona joined the Jujutsu Higher-Ups’ Basic Department. Her involvement coincided with increasingly overt and covert restrictions on Chisei, and she became an instrument of Kamo Clan influence rather than an independent representative of the Miwa family 105 108.

Her eventual death exposed the use of Miwa family members in sacrificial rituals that could strengthen cursed spirits and spread counter-curses to ordinary people. Although Chisei initially suspected fatal backlash from an attempt to alter fate, the subsequent discovery of Riona’s remains revealed exploitation through a ritual, while Yuto later admitted that he had forced her to use Judgment before strange cursed spirits took her away 126 128 129 144.

Appearance

  • Hair: Long, pink, thick, soft, and glossy; she takes considerable care of it 17 19.
  • Eyes: Pink, also described as cherry-pink 11 23.
  • Features: Pretty face, fair skin, and delicate hands 12 19.
  • Clothing: Wears a Jujutsu High uniform after enrolling; later wears a black suit while working for the Higher-Ups 17 108.
  • Grooming: Appears with her hair pinned up when visiting Tetsuya and remains neatly groomed even after overnight airport duty 39 44.

Riona says others call her the Miwa family’s “child of fortune” because her eyes supposedly match those of its first generation. Chisei instead notes that rare pink-eyed family members were historically treated as anomalies 11.

Personality

Riona presents herself as gentle, sweet, and courteous around classmates, teachers, and upperclassmen. Her resentment toward Chisei repeatedly breaks through that composure, producing insults, shouting, and physical aggression. She resumes a friendly manner when others are watching, including welcoming Chisei to school despite opposing her enrollment 19 20 22 29.

Her rivalry began with comparing herself to Chisei after hearing about her from her father. She fears that the main family’s gifted daughter will take her spotlight and undermine her ambitions. Initially inclined to underestimate Chisei, she becomes more diligent in training after witnessing the gap between them 19 29 39.

Riona is obedient and romantically attached to Tetsuya. His praise and assurances of affection reinforce her loyalty, while his reprimands frighten her. She accepts his claim that his plans for Chisei are for her benefit, although his private thoughts reveal that he considers Riona inadequate for his real objective 13 39.

Her desire to prove herself can override concern for her own safety. When Sukuna’s finger rejects her Judgment, she refuses to stop, partly because she imagines Chisei might have succeeded easily. She willingly risks shortening her life rather than disappoint Tetsuya or appear inferior 79.

As an adult, Riona becomes more controlled and politically calculating. She can maintain an innocent expression when accused of interfering with Chisei’s businesses, and she uses her official position to threaten punishment. Nevertheless, Chisei can still provoke her anger, and her instinctive fear of Chisei persists 108.

Her final act reveals trust beneath the rivalry. Although she envies Chisei’s talent, status, and independence, she recognizes her as the Miwa family’s most outstanding and trustworthy member. The later explanation of their relationship states that Riona never intended to truly harm Chisei or the people she cared about; her dying Judgment entrusts her remaining power to her former rival 129.

Abilities & Skills

Divination

Riona practices the Miwa family’s divination jujutsu, which can obtain information about a person’s past and future from traces such as handwriting 19 28.

  • Her readings cover a shorter span of time and are less accurate than Chisei’s 28.
  • She initially believes family members cannot read one another’s fates; Chisei corrects her, explaining that exceptionally gifted users can read collateral relatives 11.
  • She recognizes Chisei’s use of traditional divination fundamentals at Naha Airport and privately acknowledges her superior perception 43.
  • She knows that Divination Reversal can carry a substantial cost, but is not shown performing it 19.
  • Tetsuya later claims that Riona once read his fate and found nothing noteworthy. This claim occurs while he is refusing Chisei’s request for a more capable reading 156.

Judgment Jujutsu

Riona also practices the family’s Judgment jujutsu, associated with bodily-tissue sacrifices and delayed effects 4 19 24.

  • During her spar against Gojo, she plucks two hairs to prepare her technique 24.
  • Gojo’s Cursed Technique Lapse: Blue overwhelms her before she can form the necessary hand sign, leaving the intended effect unperformed 24.
  • Chisei explicitly considers Riona’s control of their shared jujutsu inferior to her own 19.
  • At Tetsuya’s request, she attempts to place a Judgment on a sealed finger of Ryomen Sukuna. After blood from her finger proves insufficient against its rejection, she bites her tongue and spreads blood-derived pink motes over the wooden box. The precise condition of the Judgment is not disclosed 79.
  • As an adult, she bites her finger and releases pinkish-red cursed energy when Chisei attacks her, but cannot prevent Chisei from breaking her arm 108.

Her final Judgment demonstrates the technique’s ability to transcend death. Before dying, she sacrifices her life to arrange for Chisei’s cursed energy to grow stronger upon contact with her remains. When the condition is fulfilled, her pinkish-red energy, mingled with shadows, flows into Chisei, repairs damaged power, and makes it more resilient; Riona’s remaining head then crumbles into ash 128 129.

The blessing has lasting effects on Chisei’s abilities. Her shadow subsequently appears stronger, and she gains Transcription, a technique that reads thoughts and alters the brain’s instructions to the nerves. These are developments in Chisei after receiving Riona’s blessing, not abilities Riona herself is shown using 138 140.

Cursed Energy Control

Riona demonstrates competent cursed energy control and learns quickly during classroom exercises 23.

  • Splits a wooden block into four pieces on her first attempt; the cuts are slightly crooked but smooth 23.
  • Quickly progresses to smaller blocks after finding the technique’s rhythm 23.
  • Her results remain less precise than Chisei’s uniform, fingernail-sized pieces 23.
  • Her cursed energy is rosy or pinkish-red, lighter than Chisei’s blood-red energy 79 108 129.

Talisman-Making

  • Studies talisman-making diligently at the Kamo residence. Tetsuya praises her work aloud while privately dismissing such accomplishments as inconsequential to his plans 79.

Political and Administrative Influence

  • Works within the Higher-Ups’ Basic Department and becomes regarded as a prodigy by officials whose view of her differs sharply from their hostility toward Chisei 105 108.
  • Orders barrier specialists to erect additional defenses at the Higher-Ups’ office complex. These are barriers commissioned by her, rather than techniques she is shown constructing herself 108.
  • Uses official authority and threats of confinement or classification as a curse user against Chisei, while also interfering with her ordinary-world businesses 108.

Relationships

  • Miwa Yuto — Father. Both receive Tetsuya’s protection and support the Miwa family’s return to Jujutsu Society. Yuto considers Riona his precious daughter and the branch family’s hope of regaining prominence. After her death, he becomes bedridden with grief; he later admits that he forced her to use Judgment during a ritual interrupted by strange cursed spirits 11 12 126 130 144.
  • Miwa Chisei — Distant main-family relative and rival. Riona covets her family-head token and resents her ability and enrollment. Chisei rejects her demands and initially suspects the branch family’s ambitions may be connected to her father’s death; that suspicion is not confirmed at that stage 11 19 20. Their antagonism continues into adulthood, but Riona ultimately uses her dying Judgment to strengthen Chisei. Chisei mourns her, investigates her exploitation, presides over her funeral, and resolves to kill the person responsible for brutalizing her 108 128 129 130.
  • Kamo Tetsuya — Protector, patron, and romantic interest. Riona pledges eternal loyalty to him and gathers school information at his command. He exploits her attachment while concealing his motives 12 13 39. He encourages her to risk herself applying Judgment to Sukuna’s finger despite outwardly expressing concern. After her disappearance, Chisei’s reading reveals that Riona felt both intense love and hatred toward him; Tetsuya claims he regarded her only as a younger sister 79 126. His later denial of Kamo involvement in her death remains a claim made while concealing his motives 156.
  • Satoru Gojo — Upperclassman who mocks her and defeats her in a five-second spar while deliberately holding back 12 24. He later deliberately excludes her from the group chat for his eighteenth-birthday outing and warns the Higher-Ups that she may bring disaster upon them. Despite his dislike, he assists in the investigation of her death and the recovery of her remains 100 112 128 129.
  • Kento Nanami — Classmate and partner in the spar against Gojo. He notices her hostility toward Chisei and avoids becoming involved. He later attends her funeral 22 24 30 130.
  • Yu Haibara — Friendly classmate who shows concern when she becomes upset, often missing the hostility behind her exchanges with Chisei. He later pays his respects at her funeral 22 30 130.
  • Eikura Yohei — Homeroom teacher who instructs her in cursed energy control and supervises first-year missions. He attends her funeral alongside other members of Jujutsu High 22 23 29 42 130.
  • Shoko Ieiri — Upperclassman whom Riona unsuccessfully tries to draw into resentment toward Chisei. Shoko rejects the insinuation that Chisei’s closeness to Gojo and Geto should bother her and urges Riona to fit in at school. She later attends Riona’s funeral 64 130.
  • Suguru Geto — Upperclassman to whom she introduces herself shortly after enrolling. His Jujutsu Empowerment Department later participates in the search for her, and he attends her funeral 17 128 130.
  • Toji Fushiguro — Locates the underground ritual site containing Riona’s remains while working for Chisei. He witnesses the activation of her final Judgment and later watches the funeral guests while disguised as a security guard 128 129 130.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Attempt to Claim the Family Token

  • Visits Chisei’s fortune-telling stall and requests a blessing to become a powerful sorcerer 11.
  • Announces her intention to restore the Miwa family, then demands the Sun and Moon Charm. Chisei refuses and uses Riona’s written question to expose information about her family and its plans 11.
  • Learns that Gojo’s recruitment assignment names Chisei, not her, and reports this development to Tetsuya 12.
  • Questions Tetsuya about his capture-alive bounty on Chisei; he refuses to explain and instead orders her to gather information at school 13.

Jujutsu High Rivalry

  • Enrolls before Chisei and introduces herself to Suguru Geto as a first-year 17.
  • Confronts Chisei on campus and grabs her injured arm. Chisei shakes her off with cursed energy and threatens to make her lose her hair through divination 19.
  • Joins the first-year class alongside Chisei, Nanami, and Haibara; subsequent training exposes Chisei’s superior control and combat strength 22 23 29.
  • Begins practicing alone more frequently. Tetsuya advises her to stop confronting Chisei directly and instead wait for opportunities to undermine her 39.
  • Tetsuya later apologizes to Chisei for Riona’s supposed childishness, but Chisei replies that Riona has not bothered her, regarding her attempts as ineffective 54.

Naha Airport Mission

  • Accompanies the first-years to monitor Naha Airport for a suspected Time Vessel Association threat 42.
  • Receives Chisei’s warning to search the southeast and recognizes the divination behind it 43.
  • Remains on duty overnight with the group, which thwarts the association’s attack before returning to Tokyo 44.

Wakkanai Mission and Attempts to Sow Discord

  • Pairs with Shoko during the Wakkanai City mission and asks about her relationship with Chisei 64.
  • Suggests that Shoko is being left out because Chisei is close to Gojo and Geto. Shoko instead expresses gratitude that Chisei draws some of their attention away from her and dismisses Riona’s attempt at divisive gossip 64.
  • Volunteers alongside Haibara to go shopping early when Eikura announces a visit to Rishiri-Rebun-Sarobetsu National Park 65.

Sukuna’s Finger and Promotion

  • Is studying talisman-making when Tetsuya visits and asks her to place a Judgment on a sealed finger of Sukuna before its delivery to Jujutsu High 79.
  • Encounters a powerful rejection that feels as though an evil presence is battering her soul. Unwilling to disappoint Tetsuya or concede inferiority to Chisei, she uses additional blood and persists despite the possible cost to her lifespan 79.
  • Remains Grade 2 when she hears of Chisei’s Grade 1 promotion and assumes, incorrectly, that personal connections made the process easier 82.
  • Trains intensely over the summer and reaches Semi-Grade 1 shortly before school resumes 82.

Revelation of Gojo’s Monitoring Assignment

  • Accidentally overhears Tetsuya discussing the Higher-Ups’ scrutiny of Chisei 87.
  • Confronts Chisei in an empty classroom and reveals that Gojo has been assigned to monitor her, hoping to undermine her trust in him 87.
  • Argues that Chisei should have accepted Gojo Clan protection and that the branch family can preserve Miwa history. Chisei rejects dependence on a patron and reasserts her resolve to protect the family herself 87.
  • Flees after Chisei warns her to stop provoking her and threatens to kill her if she continues. Chisei ultimately chooses to trust Gojo and wait for his explanation 87.
  • Is deliberately omitted from Gojo’s group chat for his eighteenth-birthday hot-spring celebration 100.

Service to the Higher-Ups

After graduation, Riona joins the Basic Department. The Higher-Ups’ restrictions on Chisei intensify after her arrival, and confrontations repeatedly erupt in their office complex 105.

  • Interferes with Chisei’s businesses outside Jujutsu Society and commissions additional office barriers directed against her 108.
  • Faces Chisei after she breaks through those barriers. Riona denies understanding the accusation and threatens disciplinary action 108.
  • Attempts to defend herself with blood-activated jujutsu, but Chisei breaks her arm with a punch and seizes her by the neck 108.
  • Is released when Tetsuya intervenes with Blood Manipulation. His attack grazes Chisei’s cheek, and Chisei rejects his apology on Riona’s behalf, declaring that she will beat them both up 108.
  • Becomes the subject of Gojo’s warning to the central leadership that she may bring disaster upon them. The officials discuss transferring her to a less important department, but no completed reassignment is established 112.

Disappearance and Confirmation of Death

Riona disappears one week after the reported counter-curse incident connected to Yasohachi Bridge. At a meeting concerning her disappearance, Tetsuya states that she has been missing for seventy-six hours and that searches by the Kamo Clan and Yuto have failed 126.

Chisei uses a recent signature to read Riona’s fate. She encounters intense love and hatred directed toward Tetsuya, followed by an abrupt end marked by darkness and ill omen, and announces that Riona is dead. Chisei initially identifies the signs with fatal backlash from Miwa jujutsu used to alter a fate beyond the practitioner’s capacity, while questioning whether someone exploited her 126.

Tetsuya claims that he could not return Riona’s feelings because he regarded her as a younger sister. Yuto suggests that Riona may have tried to change his feelings, but this is an interpretation offered during the meeting rather than a demonstrated account of the fatal events 126.

Chisei subsequently warns the Higher-Ups that she will not forgive anyone who uses a Miwa family member. Despite their history, she publicly recognizes Riona as an outstanding member of the family and expresses the hope that she can live freely outside Jujutsu Society in another life 127.

Recovery of Her Remains and Final Judgment

  • Geto mobilizes the Jujutsu Empowerment Department to help search, while Chisei pursues a lead pointing northwest toward Saitama Prefecture 128.
  • Two days later, Toji locates an underground structure containing an altar covered in cursed patterns. Riona’s severed head, tangled in her pink hair, rests on a stone pillar 128.
  • Chisei concludes that Miwa family lives have been used to strengthen a special-grade cursed spirit, enable domain use, and attach a counter-curse to its power that can affect ordinary people 128.
  • Chisei carefully tidies Riona’s hair and touches her head. Riona’s remaining cursed energy activates her final Judgment, restoring and strengthening Chisei’s damaged power 128 129.
  • Riona’s head turns to ash after the transfer. Chisei thanks her for trusting her in the end and explains that Riona deliberately used her dying life as the price for the blessing 128 129.

The discovery exposes a concealed aspect of Miwa jujutsu: sacrifices, including ordinary people and cursed spirits, can increase cursed energy. Chisei and Gojo suspect that someone has repeatedly exploited the family’s secrets, rather than treating Riona’s death as an isolated event 129.

Funeral and Continuing Investigation

Chisei pays for and presides over a lavish funeral. With no body remaining, the coffin contains a human-shaped arrangement of Riona’s favorite white roses, dressed in her Higher-Ups uniform. Yuto is bedridden with grief, and Chisei is the only Miwa family member present 130.

Members of Jujutsu High, Riona’s colleagues, and representatives of the Kamo, Gojo, and Zenin clans attend. When the Kamo Clan head suggests that his family should have arranged the funeral, Chisei insists that Riona belongs to the Miwa family. After the ceremony, she resolves to use her intelligence network to find and kill Riona’s assailant 130.

  • Chisei later considers whether Riona’s sacrifice may have strengthened multiple special-grade cursed spirits, although this remains a hypothesis 133.
  • During her fight with Mahito, Chisei questions whether he and his associates were responsible for Riona’s death; he does not provide a direct answer 139.
  • At a cemetery in Wakayama, Yuto admits that he forced Riona to use Judgment in a ritual. He says strange cursed spirits interrupted it and took her away, then breaks down while mistaking Chisei for his daughter 144.
  • Chisei later confronts Tetsuya about his support of the branch family and Riona’s fate. He denies Kamo involvement, refuses to let Chisei read him, and claims that failing to accept Riona’s love was his greatest mistake. The confrontation escalates when Gojo’s attack on the Kamo estate exposes a hidden cursed-spirit presence, but these events do not by themselves establish every detail of Riona’s death 156.

Trivia

  • Before intensifying her jujutsu training, Riona preferred painting and flower arranging 39.
  • Despite acknowledging that she underestimated Chisei, she treats the gap between Grade 2 and Semi-Grade 1 as something she can soon overcome 39.
  • She eventually reaches Semi-Grade 1 after a summer of intensive training 82.
  • White roses are her favorite flowers and are used throughout her funeral, including the effigy placed in her coffin 130.
  • Chisei arranges a particularly grand funeral partly because Riona loved being the center of attention 130.
