Background / History
Tang San retains memories of a previous life in which he secretly learned martial arts. He uses Tang Sect techniques and repeatedly invokes its rules to justify killing weaker people who offend him or postponing revenge against opponents he cannot yet defeat 1 7 14.
Nuoding Academy and the Feud with Cao De
Tang San arrives at Nuoding Academy as a work-study student accompanied by Old Jack. Yu Xiaogang takes an interest in his Blue Silver Grass and innate full soul power, questions him about possessing two martial souls, and accepts him as a disciple. Tang San immediately develops murderous hostility toward Cao De for intruding on their conversation 1.
He initially controls Dorm Seven, where newcomers must defeat him or acknowledge his leadership. During Cao De’s challenge, Tang San escalates from footwork and physical attacks to needles coated with Itch Powder. Cao De redirects the needles into him, causing severe itching and injuries; Wang Sheng subsequently recognizes Cao De as the dormitory’s boss 2 3.
Tang San seeks treatment from Yu Xiaogang and becomes increasingly jealous of Cao De’s closeness to Xiao Wu. Cao De later manipulates his Sleeve Arrow into striking his already injured groin. Unable to overcome Cao De’s control of his hidden weapons, Tang San waits for his first soul ring as an opportunity for revenge 3 4.
First Soul Ring and Another Defeat
During the Soul Hunting Forest expedition, a Mandala Snake pursues Tang San and Yu Xiaogang. Yu Xiaogang throws Tang San away from danger and is bitten. After his teacher loses consciousness, Tang San attacks the snake with hidden weapons and feeds it rabbit meat; it subsequently writhes with purple liquid coming from its mouth 6.
Returning as a level-eleven Soul Master, Tang San intervenes in Dorm Seven’s confrontation with Xiao Chenyu’s group. He secretly helps Wang Sheng with thrown pebbles, defeats Ling Feng, and binds and poisons Xiao Chenyu. He then challenges Cao De, intending to retaliate for his earlier injuries. Cao De breaks his Entanglement and defeats him with kicks 7.
Tang San questions whether the Mandala Snake was the correct ring choice. Yu Xiaogang reassures him with promises of future supremacy through his second martial soul. Tang San then blames his defeat on hidden weapons and asks his teacher to have Luo Sanpao mutilate Cao De 8.
Yu Xiaogang’s confrontation with Cao De ends in public humiliation, after which master and disciple depart in disguise. Tang San later states that he left Nuoding Academy after studying there for one year and continued studying with his teacher 9 13.
Shrek Academy Entrance Examination
At twelve, Tang San passes Shrek Academy’s initial test with rank-29 soul power. He reunites with Cao De and Xiao Wu and tries to impress Ning Rongrong, repeatedly mistaking her interest in Cao De for interest in himself 13.
During Zhao Wuji’s combat examination, Tang San attempts to rescue Zhu Zhuqing with Blue Silver Grass, but Cao De reaches her first. The misplaced grass tears Zhao Wuji’s trousers, provoking a fight. Tang San responds with poisoned hidden weapons aimed at vital areas, but Zhao Wuji restrains and publicly spanks him 14.
Later, Tang San’s hidden weapons discharge without his command and poison Zhao Wuji with Hallucinogenic Powder. Tang San identifies the poison and begins detoxification; Zhao Wuji recovers after needle treatment. Tang San nevertheless blames Cao De for his humiliation and refuses Oscar’s healing assistance 14 15.
Third Soul Ring Expedition
After reaching level thirty, Tang San joins the expedition to obtain his third ring. When Zhao Wuji captures a Phoenix-tail Crested Serpent for Oscar, Tang San creates a diversion and secretly kills it with a Dragon Whisker Needle before Oscar can deliver the finishing blow. When Oscar cannot absorb the ring, Tang San falsely attributes the failure to the beast being mutated 18 20.
Tang San later becomes fixated on a ten-thousand-year Man Faced Demon Spider. He strikes Zhao Wuji with hidden weapons to demand assistance and threatens to complain to Tang Hao when the spider escapes 22.
The ensuing conflict includes an attack on Oscar and a lethal hidden-weapon assault against Dai Mubai. Zhao Wuji stops him with Gravity Enhancement. The pressure forces Tang San’s face into excrement on the ground, and he eventually loses consciousness 23.
The Dragon Duke and Snake Granny confront the group over the stolen Man Faced Demon Spider. Tang San claims to be Tang Hao’s son, but his Blue Silver Grass fails to convince them. Their suppression prevents him from displaying his Clear Sky Hammer as proof 24 25.
At Meng Yiran’s suggestion, they force him to kill a five-hundred-year Shy Tree and absorb its ring. Testing the resulting Shyness skill reveals that it weakens rather than reinforces his Entanglement, leaving him distraught 25 28.
Zhao Wuji’s Attempted Memory Erasure
Believing Tang San will never forgive him, Zhao Wuji ambushes him in a toilet and follows a book titled A Step-by-Step Guide to Making Someone Lose Their Memory. Tang San unsuccessfully retaliates with Mysterious Jade Hand, then pretends to become vacant after realizing that visible resistance makes Zhao Wuji intensify the painful procedure 29.
By the following chapter, Tang San is genuinely described as mentally unstable. Two soul masters supervise him as he refuses meals, attempts to eat his own excrement, and crawls beneath a bed while claiming to be a cricket and a Man Faced Demon Spider 30.
Appearance
- Clothing: Wears white while meditating at Nuoding Academy; appears in blue clothing and tight trousers at Shrek’s entrance test 4 13.
- Technique-related changes: His eyes flash purple when using his ocular technique, while Mysterious Jade Hand makes his fingers smooth and jade-like 4 6.
- Disguise: Leaves Nuoding with a veil and gray cloak despite the summer heat 9.
Personality
Tang San is proud of his talent and highly responsive to admiration. Praise from Dorm Seven’s students, astonishment at his first ring, and recognition of his rank-29 soul power all visibly please him. He often assumes that displays of strength will secure romantic affection 2 7 13.
His attraction to Xiao Wu and Ning Rongrong is possessive rather than reciprocated. He decides that Xiao Wu “belonged to him,” treats her closeness to Cao De as betrayal, and repeatedly interprets Ning Rongrong’s avoidance as shyness. His resentment toward Xiao Wu eventually includes a threat of sexual violence as revenge 4 9 13 15.
Tang San habitually turns embarrassment into murderous grudges. He targets vital areas during fights, sabotages Oscar’s ring acquisition, and invokes Tang Sect rules to excuse attacks on weaker people. When overmatched, he suppresses his anger, relies on his father’s reputation, or submits while planning future revenge 7 14 20 22 25.
His attachment to Yu Xiaogang is inconsistent. He feels gratitude when his teacher faces the Mandala Snake and anxiously tries to revive him after an injury, but also questions his guidance and privately blames him for Ning Rongrong’s displeasure 6 8 16 17.
Abilities & Skills
Twin Martial Souls
Tang San possesses Blue Silver Grass and Clear Sky Hammer 8.
- Blue Silver Grass is his publicly used martial soul and is described by Yu Xiaogang as specializing in control 7 8.
- He conceals Clear Sky Hammer as a trump card. Yu Xiaogang advises him to wait until level ninety before adding rings to it 8 25.
- He attempts to release the hammer against the Dragon Duke’s pressure, but first holds it back himself and is later prevented from manifesting it by the Snake Granny 25.
Blue Silver Grass Soul Skills
| Skill | Demonstrated effects | Limitations |
|---|---|---|
| First Soul Skill: Entanglement | Binds targets with grass carrying thorns and Mandala Snake venom. Tang San can prepare it beneath an opponent in advance 7. | Cao De breaks free; the Man Faced Demon Spider cuts through the bindings 7 22. |
| Third Soul Skill: Shyness | Curls the grass’s leaves and barbs and makes active bindings soft 28. | Testing it on Entanglement weakens the grass instead of providing the improvement Tang San hoped for 28. |
Tang Sect Martial Arts
- Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track: Evasive footwork used in duels and against Zhao Wuji. Cao De’s Reverse Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track predicts its steps and counters it 2 14.

- Cao De’s Magnetic Hand redirects or manipulates his hidden weapons, repeatedly turning them against him 2 4.
- Zhao Wuji’s defensive soul skill deflects his lethal volley during the entrance examination 14.

- Meng Yiran, Dragon Duke, and Snake Granny — Punish him over the stolen Man Faced Demon Spider by forcing him to absorb the Shy Tree ring. Tang San adds all three to his death list 25.
- Wang Sheng — Former subordinate in Dorm Seven. Transfers his loyalty to Cao De and later ignores Tang San’s orders 2 3 7.
Story Role
- Recurring antagonist to Cao De: His attempts at revenge and romantic rivalry drive the confrontations at Nuoding and Shrek Academies 2 7 13 14.
- Major source of emotion points: Meeting Tang San activates Cao De’s emotion system. His ridicule, anger, resentment, and hatred repeatedly generate points; one notification awards 200 points from his combined negative emotions 1 3.
- Target of the Anti-Tang Sect Manual: Cao De’s beginner reward contains techniques specifically designed to counter Tang Sect martial arts, hidden weapons, and poisons, directly undermining Tang San’s usual advantages 1 2 4.
