Background / History

Childhood and the Ackerman Rescue

Eren accompanied Grisha to the Ackerman home, where they discovered that Mr. Ackerman had been murdered and his family abducted. Despite orders to wait for his father, Eren became involved in the rescue. He defended his actions by calling the traffickers “beasts wearing human skin,” while Chen Si praised his courage 3 4.

The rescue began his friendship with Chen Si and Mikasa. Eren lent Chen Si his scarf, which Chen Si wrapped around Mikasa, and enthusiastically invited the surviving Ackerman family to live with the Yeagers 4.

Eren wanted to explore beyond the Walls and join the Survey Corps. He challenged the Garrison’s complacency, defended returning scouts against mockery, and argued that abandoning exploration would make the Survey Corps’ sacrifices meaningless 5 6.

Refugee Life and Military Training

After Wall Maria fell, Eren vowed to reclaim their home. Refugee discrimination and scarce food intensified his resentment; he rejected charity and angrily proposed fighting his way back to Wall Maria 9 10 11.

He entered the 104th Training Corps alongside his friends. Annie repeatedly defeated him in hand-to-hand practice, but he learned from her and later used her shoulder throw against Jean 12 19 20.

Trost and the Survey Corps

During Trost’s defense, Armin reported that Eren had died saving him. Eren subsequently appeared as an Attack Titan fighting other Titans, and Chen Si helped protect him until he emerged from its body 38 42 46.

The attempt to use his Titan power to seal Trost nearly failed when he attacked Mikasa and injured his own Titan face. He eventually carried the boulder to the gate and sealed the breach, securing humanity’s first victory over the Titans 58 62 67.

His loss of control became a central issue at the military hearing. Eren was horrified to learn that he had attacked Mikasa, and Levi severely beat him during the proceedings. Later, he lived with the Survey Corps under Levi’s strict supervision 80 81 86.

Carla’s Death and the Truth of His Inheritance

Carla survived the initial fall of Wall Maria but died later. Eren collapsed in grief and renewed his vow to eliminate every Titan. Chen Si then made him promise to stay alive and never hurt Mikasa, Armin, Sasha, or their other friends 84 92.

The investigation into Titan inheritance led Eren to the horrifying realization that he had likely eaten Grisha. The basement records later confirmed that his father had another family in Marley: Dina Fritz was Grisha’s former wife, and Zeke Yeager was Eren’s older brother 154 195.

Learning about Marley’s treatment of Eldians transformed Eren’s understanding of the outside world. Rather than finding freedom beyond the Walls, he discovered nations that feared and persecuted his people 195 199.

Reclaiming Wall Maria and Seeing the Future

Eren helped defeat Rod Reiss by carrying Levi inside his Titan’s mouth, shielding him from the giant Titan’s heat. Before the Wall Maria operation, he endured repeated transformations and brutal sparring with Chen Si to improve his hardening 168 183.

During the campaign, he intercepted Titans attacking the Survey Corps. After returning to Shiganshina, he accompanied the officers to his family’s basement, where Grisha’s records revealed the wider world 189 193 195.

Touching Historia at the medal ceremony awakened memories of Grisha killing the Reiss family and broken visions of future disasters, including Chen Si’s apparent death. Eren concealed most of these visions and became noticeably withdrawn 204.

He later activated the Coordinate through Dina Fritz. Despite Chen Si’s request to spare her, the commanded Titans devoured her while Eren watched calmly. At the sea, Eren spoke of enemies rather than freedom and allowed Chen Si to examine memories containing the Rumbling and Eren’s own death 218 226.

Marley and the Limits of Peace

Eren reacted violently when Yelena explained Zeke’s plan to sterilize the Eldians, then reframed his attack as a test of her loyalty. He subsequently presented himself to Zeke as agreeing that never being born was salvation 248 321.

While visiting Marley, he remained troubled by Paradis’s future and his limited lifespan. He disappeared after a rally denounced Paradis, later confronted Reiner about Carla’s death, and fought Marley’s artificial Titans 271 282 338 349.

During that battle, Eren protected his friends from a nuclear blast with layered hardening. Afterward, Chen Si promoted him to major general and granted him lifelong leave, but Eren questioned whether Chen Si’s balance-of-power strategy could deliver genuine freedom. He said he had less than four years remaining 354 355 388.

The Rumbling and His Confession

Eren waited in confinement until Floch freed him, following events he remembered rather than escaping through his War Hammer power. He fought Gal, whose attacks repeatedly shattered his hardened defenses, before eventually taking full control of the Founding Titan and unleashing the Rumbling 453 454 456 463.

His friends organized an effort to stop him. Eren left them free to oppose him but rejected their pleas to halt the Rumbling, declaring that he would not entrust Paradis’s future to fate 463 478.

Eren then claimed responsibility for the deaths of Mikasa’s parents and Carla, deliberately presenting himself as cruel and manipulative. During his confrontation with Chen Si, he admitted that this behavior was intended to make Chen Si believe killing him was necessary to end Titan power 479 486.

His fuller confession described influencing Mr. Ackerman’s vigilance and redirecting Titans to preserve people needed in the future, including Blake and Zeyechuan. He broke down over Carla’s death, insisting that he had wanted to protect his friends and help them escape the Walls 486.

After Conventional Titan Power

When Chen Si’s shattered body began departing the world, Eren transformed again despite having lost Titan power. Phantom forms of previous Attack Titan inheritors appeared behind him, and their combined cry of freedom broke through time and the world’s barriers 495.

In the following years, Eren traveled extensively but also isolated himself, continuing to blame himself for Chen Si’s departure. After searching for ten years, he reunited with Chen Si, embraced him through a projection, and revealed a second world where Carla, Grisha, Marco, and Mikasa’s parents were alive 502 514.
