Background / History
Sans is Papyrus’s older brother and Semi’s grandson. When Papyrus brings Semi home, Sans immediately recognizes their grandfather, surprising Papyrus, who had not known Sans was already aware of him 14 35.
His acquaintance with Linde predates the children’s journey through Snowdin. Sans tells Gaster that Linde mentioned him thirty years earlier; Gaster, in turn, says Linde described Sans three hundred years earlier as an interesting and clever young fellow. Sans later confirms that he has met a future version of Linde 31 49.
Sans has access to a Timeline Observation Room behind his house. Its monitor records anomalous temporal fluctuations, and its equipment includes a Timeline Disruptor. Semi later explains that he asked Gaster to build the Timeline Observation Device 22 37.
Appearance
- Smooth, bare skull: Comically runs a comb over his head while introducing himself 14.
- Trademark grin: Frequently maintains an easygoing smile while joking, giving warnings, or confronting an enemy 18 25 49.
- Sleepwear: Answers his bedroom door in pajamas when Papyrus brings Semi home 35.
- Visible exhaustion: Sweats and pants during the prolonged battle against Ye Yu 49 50.
Personality
Sans is habitually lazy and fond of terrible puns, practical jokes, and deliberately unhelpful answers. He admits that capturing humans is part of his sentry work but says he cannot be bothered to capture anything. His laziness extends to dozing at the Waterfall Outpost and even falling asleep standing up during the effort to save Undyne 14 30 31.
His casual manner does not prevent him from keeping promises or looking after others. He takes his agreement with Linde seriously, watches over Toriel’s children, and asks them to meet Papyrus specifically to lift his brother’s spirits 14 20. During the final battle, he recognizes that Papyrus has come prepared to die without knowing that resurrection may be possible, responding with pained affection 50.
Sans is observant and tactically cautious. He recognizes the implications of Ye Yu’s reloads despite losing his detailed battle memories, and he chooses to confront Ye Yu before further LOVE gains make the fight harder 49.
Abilities & Skills
Spatial Shortcuts and Teleportation
Sans repeatedly travels ahead of Linde and Frisk despite leaving in another direction. He can also transport another person by physical contact 14 15 20.
- Takes Linde directly to the True Lab and back to Grillby’s 20.
- The exact mechanism initially remains uncertain to Linde, who considers either teleportation or portals possible 38.
- Explicitly uses teleportation to evade Ye Yu’s blade in battle 50.
- At that point in the prolonged fight, a single teleport leaves him exhausted 50.
Bone Attacks and Gravity Manipulation
Sans uses gravity to slam opponents into the ground and summons bones from beneath them or across the battlefield 49.
- Combines white and blue bones into interwoven barrages 49 50.
- Blue attacks can be avoided by remaining still, a rule he teaches Linde and Frisk 16.
- Creates additional bones to block an approaching enemy 50.
- His physical bones kill Ye Yu outright in their first encounter. The narration distinguishes Sans’s magic attack value of one from the lethality of a physical bone piercing Ye Yu’s body 49.
Gaster Blasters
Sans summons large Gaster Blasters that fire powerful lasers 49.
- Uses a blaster to kill Ye Yu after he dodges the opening bone attack 49.
- Combines blaster fire with bone barrages 49.
- Repeated Gaster Shockwaves contribute to the destruction of the plaza during the skeleton family’s battle 50.
Timeline Awareness
Sans knows about temporal manipulation, but his awareness does not amount to perfect memory retention 20 22 49.
- Identifies Linde as a time traveler 20.
- Notices Linde’s erasure after the Timeline Disruptor incident 22.
- After Ye Yu reloads, loses his memory of their previous battle but recognizes a vague sense of familiarity as evidence of a reset 49.
- Knows from meeting future Linde that his apparent defeat is not necessarily permanent 49 50.
Judgment and Karma Detection
Sans senses karma associated with Ye Yu’s killings and concludes that he can now judge him 49.
- Chooses to intervene promptly because additional LOVE could strengthen Ye Yu without a corresponding increase in karma 49.
- The supplied account does not establish a separate damage effect for karma.
Interlayer Soul Form
Semi teaches Sans to use modifications made to the Interlayer World to change his form in ordinary reality 50.
- Becomes more intangible than a ghost and cannot be attacked in that form 50.
- Must attach to a blood relative or someone with the same soul essence; otherwise, the form immediately dissipates 50.
- Can grant some of his power to the person hosting him 50.
- Attaches to Papyrus alongside Semi, but all three dissipate when Papyrus is struck by Ye Yu’s delayed Guaranteed-Hit Slash 50.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Whoopee cushions — Uses one for his handshake prank and keeps a second concealed in his sleeve, defeating Linde’s attempt to puncture the first 14.
- Sans’s Room Key — Gives it to Linde after he supplies the triple-secret codeword, “I’m the legendary fartmaster” 18.
- Timeline Observation Room — Contains a temporal-fluctuation monitor and a Timeline Disruptor; Linde reaches it using a key obtained from Sans’s room 22.
- Fried Snow — A mysterious gift from a little white dog. Sans has studied it for a long time without discovering its purpose; his advertised 5G sale is not a genuine offer 18.
- Ice Sign · Icefall · Diamond Storm · Modified — Linde’s supplied Spell Card. Its modifications target Icefall’s safe spots and combine them with Diamond Storm, producing ice spikes denser than Undyne’s earlier Spear Rain 47 49.
Relationships
- Papyrus — Younger brother. Sans teases him constantly but arranges a human encounter to cheer him up; Papyrus later follows him into danger and saves him from Ye Yu 14 50.
- Semi — Grandfather. Fights beside Sans, then becomes Garbled Code to bring him into the Interlayer World and teach him how to empower Papyrus 35 50.
- Linde — Acquaintance across different points in time. Sans honors a promised favor by taking him to the True Lab and later uses his modified Spell Card 20 31 49.
- Frisk — Human under his protection. He hides her from Papyrus, explains blue attacks, and asks her to watch for the flower secretly advising his brother 14 16 25.
- Toriel — Friend who asks him to look after her children. They recognize one another by voice and hold an extended telephone conversation after Frisk lends Sans her phone 14 16.
- Gaster — Discusses Linde and their earlier encounters with him beside a telescope in Waterfall 31.
- Grillby — Social acquaintance. Sans eats at his establishment, charges a meal to his tab, and turns a defense of Grillby into a string of fire puns 24 25 26.
- Ye Yu — Opponent responsible for slaughtering monsters. Sans repeatedly kills him through reloads before fighting alongside Papyrus and Semi 49 50.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Snowdin Encounters
- Introduces himself through the whoopee-cushion handshake, shelters the children behind a human-shaped lamp, and secures their help in cheering up Papyrus 14.
- Supports Papyrus’s puzzles, including the electric maze and a children’s word scramble; argues that crosswords are harder than word scrambles 16 18 19.
- Gives Linde access to his room and fulfills their earlier bargain by transporting him to obtain determination from Alphys 18 20.
- Warns Frisk about a flower whispering praise, advice, encouragement, and predictions to Papyrus 25.
Waterfall and Temporal Connections
- Greets the children at the Waterfall Outpost and reveals his five occupations 30.
- Emerges when Linde calls for help with Undyne, then leaves with Gaster after Gaster supplies the substance needed to save her 31.
- His conversation with Gaster establishes that both knew Linde long before the current journey 31.
Battle Against Ye Yu
- Leaves home under the pretext of getting fries after sensing Ye Yu’s karma 49.
- Repeatedly defeats Ye Yu, but the invader gradually learns his attack patterns through reloads. Sans eventually deploys Linde’s modified ice Spell Card 49.
- After the Subsystem shrinks Ye Yu’s hitbox, Papyrus and Semi join the exhausted Sans in battle 50.
- Enters the Interlayer World through Semi’s sacrifice, returns in soul form to strengthen Papyrus, and dissipates with his family when Ye Yu’s delayed attack lands 50.
