Chapters 226–250 Vol. 3 Read

Ch. 226A shooting contest

Ririko and her companions arrived at Haly’s Circus to discuss a joint performance and surveyed its rundown grounds and suspiciously aloof performers. After Jack challenged Oliver to a trick-shot contest, the chapter ended as the spinning target was hidden behind a curtain, leaving the contestants to aim by its reflection in a mirror.

  • Ririko introduced Dick, Oliver, and Selina to ringmaster Bill Haly as Wayne Circus performers seeking a joint show, and Bill showed them the aging circus grounds.
  • Bill arranged separate tent accommodations for the group and told them the joint performance would take place in three days.
  • Ririko went to the rehearsal area, where Dick planned to learn about the beginner performers and Oliver agreed to follow her lead.
  • Jack challenged Oliver to a shooting contest and proposed that Ririko join him for a drink if he won.
  • Jack set a wooden target spinning, and the circus members hid it behind a curtain so Oliver and Jack would have to aim using its reflection in a mirror.

Ch. 227Where did all the meat go?

Oliver outclassed Jack in a blind archery challenge, allowing Ririko to collect the money Jack had wagered. At dinner, Ririko suspected Selina had stolen the circus’s meat to feed the tiger she had brought back.

  • Jack demonstrated his mirror dart act, hitting just beside the bull’s-eye, and challenged Oliver to try.
  • Oliver blindfolded himself and shot three arrows into the exact center of the bull’s-eye, leaving Jack unable to make excuses for losing.
  • Ririko demanded the five hundred Jack had wagered, but he could only pay her a few crumpled bills and promise to owe the rest.
  • A masked clown watched Ririko and Oliver as he put the mirror away in the prop warehouse.
  • John served a meatless dinner and said the beef and chicken had vanished from the freezer.
  • Ririko suspected Selina had taken the meat to feed the tiger whose scent had clung to her when she returned.

Ch. 228Bundle Them Up and Sell Them

Ririko’s group investigated the circus’s poor conditions and learned that William recognized Dick as his grandson and repeatedly mentioned Mayor Stacey. Meanwhile, Mary and Bill planned to sell Ririko and Selina to Stacey and kill Dick and Oliver, unaware that a clown-costumed worker was listening from inside a garbage bin.

  • Mary accused cook John of losing the meat, and he stormed out after she threatened to dock his wages.
  • During an emergency meeting, Ririko told Selina to stop stealing meat and decided that Dick should investigate Mary.
  • William recognized Dick as Grayson’s son and panicked while repeating Mayor Stacey’s name.
  • Mary and Bill plotted to sell Ririko and Selina to Stacey, kill Dick and Oliver, and disguise the deaths as a rehearsal accident.
  • A clown-costumed worker pushed a garbage bin past Bill’s tent, where faint scratching came from inside and the clown told whoever was hidden there to be quiet.

Ch. 229Who Made Breakfast?

Ririko learned that the circus ringmaster planned to sell the children that night, while she and her companions prepared to act. Oliver and Dick were lured into a warehouse, where masked attackers surrounded them.

  • A woman hiding behind a curtain warned Ririko and her companions to be careful that night after sharing breakfast with her.
  • Dick told Ririko he had searched Mary's tent without finding evidence, and a boy revealed that the ringmaster promised new parents would pick up the children that night.
  • Ririko concluded the ringmaster intended to sell the circus children and told Dick and Oliver they would make their move that night.
  • A circus worker led Oliver to an isolated warehouse to try on a costume, where Dick was waiting.
  • Masked attackers armed with clubs, pipes, hatchets, and a handgun emerged from hiding and surrounded Oliver and Dick.

Ch. 230If You're Going to Drink, Get On with It

Dick and Oliver fought off the thugs, then found themselves trapped in a shed with a five-minute escape deadline and laughing gas threat. Meanwhile, Ririko and Selina accepted Bill’s dinner invitation, and Selina forced the suspicious ringmaster to drink the wine he had served them.

  • Oliver shot the gang leader’s gun hand with a tranquilizer arrow, and Dick and Oliver defeated the men who charged them.
  • Dick and Oliver discovered the shed door had been sealed, while someone outside announced an escape challenge involving laughing gas.
  • Ririko found Selina feeding the tiger and told her they needed to prepare for their move that night.
  • Bill invited Ririko and Selina to dinner, and the Gypsy Woman silently warned Ririko from inside the tent.
  • Bill poured wine for the women but hesitated to drink his own, so Selina poured his glass and the bottle into his mouth as Ririko laughed.

Ch. 231Jason Todd

Jason escaped the circus men trying to seize the children and hid in the RV with Dick, Oliver, and William Cobb, learning they were waiting to expose the child-trafficking operation. Meanwhile, Goring inspected the unconscious Ririko and Selina, leaving the rescue and the children’s fate unresolved.

  • Ririko and Selina pretended to be unconscious, and Mary’s men tied them up and locked them in a wooden crate.
  • Mary gathered the children for Goring, who ordered his armed men to load them into vans; Jason escaped and hid beside the Wayne Circus RV.
  • Dick pulled Jason into the RV, where he and Oliver explained they were hiding to catch the dangerous person in the circus and dismantle the trafficking operation.
  • Jason told Dick that Mary planned to sell the women, and Oliver urged them to rescue them; William Cobb began to regain his focus.
  • Mary showed Goring the crate, and he fixated on Ririko while Mary asked him to pay the million.

Ch. 232What's the Rush?

Mary sold Ririko and Selina to Goring, but Jerome hijacked Goring’s truck and shot him before redirecting the other truck carrying the children toward the docks. Dick and William Cobb pursued the children’s truck while Oliver followed the one carrying Ririko and Selina.

  • Mary accepted Goring’s check for Ririko and Selina, then discovered the Ringmaster was missing and blood marked his bedding.
  • Goring planned to imprison Ririko, but Jerome revealed himself as the driver, shot Goring, and ordered the other truck to take the children to the docks.
  • Dick, Oliver, Jason, and William Cobb followed the trucks until they split at a fork in the road.
  • Dick chose to pursue the children’s truck, and William Cobb broke free and leaped from the RV to catch up to it.
  • Dick followed William onto the truck, while Oliver drove the RV after the truck carrying Ririko and Selina.

Ch. 233Time to Play

Ririko and Selina escaped their crate and discovered Jerome had followed Ririko to the Circus, where he had secretly helped her and captured Goring. Jerome drove them to the Stacey estate, and Ririko prepared to begin her revenge against Goring’s family.

  • Selina freed herself and Ririko from the crate, then attacked Jerome when he opened the truck doors before realizing who he was.
  • Jerome admitted he had followed Ririko, helped her at the Circus, and injured Goring; Ririko agreed to judge him by how he dealt with Goring’s family.
  • Jerome drove the truck through the Stacey estate’s gates by claiming Goring needed a doctor.
  • After emergency medical workers arrived, Jerome knocked all three unconscious and helped Ririko and Selina out of the truck.
  • Ririko looked at the unconscious workers and told Jerome it was time to play.

Ch. 234I Won't Keep My Promise

Jerome tortured Mayor Stacey into revealing the combination to his safe, then cut off his hand to bypass its fingerprint scanner. He opened the safe with Ririko and Selina and found it packed with cash and gold bars.

  • Jerome restrained Mayor Stacey and threatened to kill his son Goring unless Stacey revealed who had supplied the children.
  • Jerome made Goring laugh uncontrollably until he died, then threatened Stacey with the same treatment to get the safe combination.
  • Stacey gave Jerome the combination and begged him to release him, but Jerome cut off Stacey’s hand and used the IV mixture to make him laugh.
  • Jerome brought Stacey’s severed hand to Ririko and Selina, who had found the hidden safe in the bedroom.
  • Jerome entered the combination and used Stacey’s thumb to open the safe, revealing stacks of banknotes and gold bars.

Ch. 235He was a wealthy family's young heir

Ririko and Selina escaped the mayor’s residence with money and gold, then returned to the Circus as chaos erupted. William Cobb recovered enough memories to reveal Dick’s family ties to the Court of Owls and the Crown family, leaving Ririko to realize Dick was a wealthy family’s heir.

  • Ririko and Selina emptied Stacey’s safe, taking the cash, gold, watches, and a memory card.
  • Jerome drove Ririko and Selina away in Stacey’s Bugatti, but fled after kissing Ririko and firing at a police roadblock to draw the officers after him.
  • Ririko and Selina joined Oliver in the RV, while Dick returned with the rescued children as laughter, screams, and a tiger’s roar broke out at the Circus.
  • Ririko found William Cobb lucid enough to question him about the Court of Owls.
  • William told Ririko that he joined the Court to protect his daughter Jenny, but the Circus Ringmaster betrayed Jenny and her husband Grayson.
  • Ririko realized Dick was descended from the Crown family and was a wealthy family’s young heir.

Ch. 236Where can you find a good job?

After the Circus fell apart, Ririko and her allies split up its stolen money and arranged new lives for its survivors. A message revealed that Oswald had been framed for Carmine’s murder and that Theo Galavan was taking over as acting mayor, leaving Ririko worried about what would happen if Oswald was sent to Arkham.

  • Ririko persuaded William to return to the Talon organization as her inside man so he could pursue revenge for his daughter.
  • Dick arranged for the children to go to the Gotham Orphanage, while Oliver offered the Circus survivors a new home in a permanent Quinn Circus in Star City.
  • Jason chose to go to Gotham with Dick, and Ririko, Selina, Dick, and William divided the cash and gold, only to learn that the valuables could be traced.
  • William left the car to return to the Talon organization, while Ririko received Victor’s message that Oswald had been framed for Carmine’s murder and Theo Galavan had become acting mayor.
  • Ririko recalled Galavan’s feud with Bruce’s family and feared that freeing Oswald from Arkham would force her to deal with Hugo Strange.

Ch. 237You have to pay my social security

Ririko brought Bruce a possible lead on the Talon Assassins and the Court of Owls, then arranged for Victor to work for her and sought help from Elizabeth Crown. The chapter ended with Elizabeth promising to answer Ririko’s request about controlling Jerome’s personality.

  • Ririko told Bruce that Galavan had returned and gave him an encrypted memory card found in Stacey’s safe.
  • Ririko asked Victor whether he could get Penguin out if he ended up in Arkham, then hired Victor to live with her in exchange for pay and social security.
  • Ririko contacted Elizabeth Crown through the Silver Falcon Auction House and challenged her about Penguin’s arrest.
  • Ririko asked Elizabeth to have Harley Quinn explain how to control Jerome’s personality, and Elizabeth promised to respond.

Ch. 238You'll Achieve Financial Freedom Sooner or Later

Ririko befriended Diana Prince at the auction house and agreed to attend Carmine's funeral with Victor to investigate his death. After Victor moved into Ririko's cluttered apartment, he discovered the Trident of the Sea God in the bathroom.

  • Ririko met Diana Prince, learned that the system could not affect Amazons, and exchanged contact information with her.
  • Ririko asked Victor to accompany her to Carmine's funeral so they could find out how he died, and Victor agreed.
  • Victor arrived at Ririko's apartment with one small bag and began clearing space among her clutter while criticizing her shopping habits.
  • Victor said his earnings went to his grandma, then went to use the bathroom and was startled by a metallic whistle.
  • Ririko retrieved the Trident of the Sea God from the bathroom and told Victor to knock before entering because the trident had a temper.

Ch. 239This bald guy was the most calculating of them all

Ririko discovered that Victor had cleaned her home and set up the spare bedroom for himself, then traveled with him toward Carmine’s funeral. She joined Fish Mooney and Butch in their car and headed to the gathering, where she hoped to learn what had happened to Carmine.

  • Ririko found her home spotless and confronted Victor, who had organized her belongings and claimed the spare bedroom because the sofa was uncomfortable.
  • Ririko told Victor not to enter her bedroom without permission, and he teased her that she might ask him in herself.
  • Victor drove Ririko toward Carmine’s funeral, but heavy traffic and a grand procession slowed their journey.
  • Fish Mooney’s Porsche made its way through the traffic, and Ririko climbed in to ride with Fish and Butch.
  • Ririko asked Butch why he had not gone after Oswald, and he said he had planned to kill him before learning Oswald had killed Carmine.
  • Ririko encouraged Fish to trust Butch and said they would learn the truth at the funeral.

Ch. 240The Chosen Shit-Stirrer

At Carmine Falcone’s funeral, Ririko questioned Sofia about his death as Theo Galavan disrupted Sofia’s succession by bringing back Alberto. The chapter ended with Alberto claiming the right to scatter the first handful of earth and insisting he was the rightful heir.

  • Butch brought Ririko and Fish Mooney to Carmine Falcone’s funeral, where Sofia stood with the Falcone elders.
  • Ririko told Sofia that Oswald had not killed Carmine, and Sofia denied killing him herself while threatening to have Oswald harmed in Arkham.
  • Sofia stopped Ririko from approaching Victor and kept her beside her during the funeral.
  • Theo Galavan arrived with Tabitha and Alberto, presenting Carmine’s banished son as a challenge to Sofia’s succession.
  • As Carmine’s coffin was lowered, Alberto stepped forward to claim the first handful of earth, and Sofia accused him of trying to take her position.

Ch. 241What Was Their Relationship?

At Carmine's funeral, Ririko condemned Gotham's mob bosses for feigning grief, then left with Victor as the underworld descended into war. Later, Victor stopped a bank robbery while Ririko enjoyed sorbet, and Batman noticed their familiar closeness.

  • Ririko rebuked Alberto, Sofia, Galavan, and the gathered mob bosses, then scattered earth and a black rose over Carmine's coffin with Victor.
  • After the funeral, Carmine's rules collapsed, and Gotham's gangs fought openly while Penguin remained detained and Batman and Robin patrolled the streets.
  • Ririko ate sorbet at an Upper Gotham dessert shop while Victor watched a bank robbery across the street.
  • Victor disabled the robbers' getaway car and shot them in the heels, then yielded them to Batman and returned to Ririko.
  • Ririko shared sorbet with Victor, and Batman watched them through the shop window, suspecting their relationship was more than master and servant.

Ch. 242Go on, Hit Me

With Oswald’s assets frozen, Ririko struggled to adjust to life without his money and learned from Harvey that the evidence against Oswald was airtight. Bruce demanded that she return to Wayne Manor, but she refused and used her influence over him to make him leave after Victor provoked him.

  • Victor told Ririko that Oswald’s assets were frozen, then cooked ramen for them at home.

  • Ririko ordered Bruce to return to Wayne Manor and sleep, and Bruce obeyed and left.

Ch. 243Who is Plain Jane?

Oswald was sentenced to indefinite confinement at Arkham State Hospital after a trial built on fabricated evidence, while Sofia and Ririko assessed Galavan’s growing influence in Gotham. As members of the Order of St. Dumas attacked their car, Ririko used her power to make them turn on themselves, then messaged someone called “Plain Jane.”

  • Ririko attended Oswald’s verdict hearing with Sofia, and the court ordered him held indefinitely at Arkham State Hospital.
  • Oswald looked to Ririko as bailiffs led him away, and Sofia warned her that Galavan was a more dangerous opponent.
  • Sofia explained that the Order of St. Dumas had recruited citizens into an armed force, and Ririko said Galavan was targeting the Wayne family.
  • Black-robed followers blocked Victor’s car and demanded that Ririko confess and surrender her wealth.
  • When a follower raised a brick toward the car, Ririko cursed the crowd, causing them to attack themselves until police subdued them.
  • Ririko messaged “Plain Jane,” and when Victor asked who that was, she said it was a woman who did not like wearing clothes.

Ch. 244Who Wants to Fall in Love with a Toilet Seat?

Ririko went to the Botanical Park to meet Pamela Isley and ask for her mind-altering toxin to help Bruce regain control of his feelings. Pamela restrained Victor with vines and warned that Bruce’s love for Ririko had turned toward murderous hatred.

  • Alfred told Ririko that members of the Order of St. Dumas had gathered outside Wayne Manor and that Bruce had shut himself in his workshop, refusing to eat or drink.
  • Pamela sent Ririko a location pin for the Botanical Park, and Ririko set out with Victor.

  • Pamela appeared, and Ririko asked her for a small amount of mind-altering toxin to help Bruce regain his senses.
  • Pamela teased Ririko about Bruce’s feelings and said his love had become deep hatred.

Ch. 245He Swore

Ririko secured Pamela’s help in dealing with Bruce, but when they reached Wayne Manor, they discovered Bruce had escaped. The manor suddenly plunged into darkness.

  • Pamela exposed Ririko to her mental toxin and used a vine cocoon to test their abilities before agreeing to accompany her to Wayne Manor.
  • Pamela released Victor from the vines after Ririko refused to let her keep him for research.
  • Ririko, Pamela, and Victor arrived at Wayne Manor, where Alfred said Bruce had changed so much that he had begun swearing.
  • Alfred led them to the basement, but Bruce was gone, and all the lights in Wayne Manor suddenly went out.

Ch. 246Infatuation Value 100

Ririko searched the darkened Wayne Estate for Bruce while Victor and Alfred faced Galavan’s assault outside. She found Bruce consumed by jealous obsession, and after an explosion shattered the study window, his infatuation reached 100 as he picked up a paper knife and pursued her.

  • Bruce appeared on the roof in his Batsuit, then disabled Victor’s mechanical arm and advanced on Ririko with a blade.
  • Ririko fell into the vines as Alfred caught Bruce in an electric net and knocked him to the ground.

Ch. 248Blowing Up the House at the First Sign of Trouble

Ririko stopped Galavan from pursuing Bruce, but the Tomie Organization's serum took control of Death Angel's armor and killed him. Bruce rescued Ririko from the armor's attack, then lured it into Wayne Manor to blow up the house.

  • Ririko released neurotoxin through Pamela's vines, weakening Bruce's infatuation and affecting everyone in the garden.
  • Ririko persuaded Galavan to lower his weapon, but the serum inside Death Angel's armor overwhelmed and killed him.
  • Ririko freed Bruce from the electrified net, and he carried her clear of Death Angel's cannon fire.
  • Bruce learned the armor was driven by the serum and told Ririko to evacuate Alfred and the others.
  • Bruce deliberately drew Death Angel into Wayne Manor, intending to blow up the house.

  • When Bruce arrived at the apartment door, Ririko warned Victor to get dressed, and he hurried back to his room.

Ch. 250The Jerome Controller

Bruce moved into Ririko's apartment, but he and Victor fought over where he would sleep, driving Ririko to relocate all three of them to a hotel suite. There, Harley told Ririko about a device that could lock Jerome into one personality and proposed joining forces to control the Court of Owls.

  • Bruce arrived at Ririko's apartment with his luggage and said he would stay there while the Wayne Estate was renovated.
