- These values appear in a single “Agent Mr. Karen” stat block; no level increase or ranking advancement is documented 33.
- Karen considers himself substantially weaker than Yor, despite his ranking. His own numerical comparisons of their combat power are estimates rather than recorded statistics 31.
- Eden Academy's Security Director believes Karen might be beyond even the Thorn Princess's ability to defeat in darkness; this is the director's assessment, not a demonstrated victory 17.
Background / History
Karen transmigrated from Blue Star into the world of Spy x Family at the age of five, more than twenty years before the story's opening. His arrival coincided with war between Ostania and Westalis. He describes his current-life birthplace as a small Westalis village whose peaceful existence was destroyed by the conflict 2 9.
During childhood, he survived in sewers, drinking polluted water and eating contaminated food. According to Phoenix's leader, living in darkness developed his night vision, while escaping pursuers sharpened his perception, speed, and explosive strength. A shell pierced his body during this period; he kept it and later had it made into his first assassin weapon 30.
An assassin organization eventually took him in and trained him. By the beginning of the story, he has become Phoenix's leading assassin and the world's No. 2. His knowledge of the original anime and manga remains important to his decisions, particularly his reluctance to kill Yor or disrupt events connected to peace 2 3 30.
Appearance
Karen is presented as a youthful man with a slender build and long limbs. He carefully styles his hair and favors formal clothing, though his relaxed posture frequently clashes with Eden Academy's standards of elegance 7 13 14 29.
- Clothing: Suits, a tie, a trench coat, a hat, and sunglasses appear among his usual attire 5 7 8.
- Eyes: His eyes repeatedly show a red gleam during combat and glow red when he hunts in darkness 13 30 31.
- False identifying mark: The mole on the left side of his neck during Yuri's pursuit is removable—a clue Karen deliberately planted 44.
- Battle damage: His later fight with Yor costs him a tooth and severely damages his treasured blade 47.
Personality
Karen is boastful, mischievous, and conspicuously informal. He enjoys flattering descriptions of his looks, teasing Henry Henderson, and presenting himself as a legendary teacher. Anya compares his conceited thoughts to Damian's vanity 13 25.
He strongly prefers comfortable, well-paid work to exhausting assignments. After encountering Yor, he requests six months of leave; the promise of a generous salary and an easy school schedule quickly changes his mood. He also frequently visits the Forgers hoping to get a meal 6 20 21.
His desire for peace is genuine and rooted in his wartime experiences. He refuses missions that would undermine it and hopes to influence future political leaders through teaching. He is particularly protective of children and despises adults who take their frustrations out on them 9 13 29.
That protectiveness coexists with extreme violence. Karen readily kills hostile assassins, threatens Swan's supporters, and treats clashes with security officers as entertainment. Against Yor, however, his confidence gives way to fear and a determined focus on escape 5 14 30 41.
Abilities & Skills
Speed, Reflexes, and Physical Strength
- Moves rapidly enough to leave afterimages and evade repeated volleys of gunfire 12 30.
- Stops a charging bull by striking its leg with a wooden staff 12.
- Snaps a small tree with a kick, punches through another tree, and leaves a crater in the ground during his fight with Twilight 37 38.
- Can overwhelm Twilight physically while retaining enough control to prolong their fight for amusement 38.
- Is not inexhaustible: two waves of attackers drain his stamina before his duel with Mike, forcing him to conserve energy 32.
Night Vision and Perception
- Can distinguish every corner of an unlit villa and hunt attackers who cannot orient themselves 31.
- Deliberately destroys electrical systems to turn darkness into a tactical advantage 31 42.
- Detects surveillance tails, approaching footsteps, and potential threats with exceptional sensitivity 2 6 9.
- Memorizes building layouts and routes as a routine security precaution 7 9.
- His leader attributes these abilities to childhood survival in sewers and repeated escapes from pursuers 30.
Poison and Anesthetic Immunity
- Identifies a client's attempt to poison him and states that poison cannot harm him 2.
- Remains unaffected after Yuri injects him with the maximum anesthetic dose a human body can withstand 45.
- Phoenix's leader attributes his poison immunity to prolonged exposure to contaminated food and water during childhood 30.
Weapons and Close-Quarters Combat
- Combines firearms, concealed weapons, swordplay, kicks, and improvised projectiles 5 19 30 38.
- Deflects incoming bullets with his sword cane and cuts through two bullets during the duel with Mike 30 32.
- Uses precise cuts to disable wrists, knees, arms, and shoulders rather than relying solely on brute force 30 31 32.
- Throws peanuts with enough force to blast holes in the ground; a cherry tomato is sufficient to knock out a delinquent 19 38.
- Recognizes the secret police's standard fighting patterns and anticipates Yuri's attacks 42 45.
Disguise, Deception, and Tactical Planning
- Impersonates a senator well enough to redirect a police investigation 1.
- Removes a hidden pistol's magazine without its owner noticing 2.
- Uses a hotel fire as visual cover for climbing to a restricted floor 4.
- Pretends to be drunk while selectively giving Twilight information about Eden's student records 22 23.
- Uses stairs to neutralize Mike's roughly half-meter height advantage during close combat 32.
- Remembers most of the classified document lost during his escape from Yor and dictates its contents to his leader 6.
Knowledge of the Original Story
- Recognizes Yor, Twilight, Anya's telepathy, and significant future plot developments from his former life 2 3 8.
- Prepares for Eden's animal rampage and anticipates Anya's later confrontation with Damian 12 21.
- Communicates through deliberate thoughts that Anya can read; this is cooperation with her ability, not telepathy of his own 10 22 46.
- His memory is incomplete: he initially forgets Bill Watkins until the dodgeball competition 50.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Sword cane / Cane Sword / Cannonball Knife — His treasured first weapon, made from the shell that pierced him as a child. Its blade is approximately forty centimeters long and capable of deflecting or cutting bullets. Yor later cracks it, and Karen plans to return it to Phoenix for repairs after further damage 30 32 46 47.
- Firearms — Uses a rifle concealed in a guitar bag, a tiny pistol, paired handguns, and weapons taken from opponents 1 2 4 30 33.
- Steel baton or pipe — A concealed waist-carried weapon used against Yor and kept ready when he receives an unfamiliar call 5 8.
- Throwing knives — Displays a throwing knife while threatening Murdoch Swan; twelve knives appear around Swan during the confrontation 17.
- Improvised wooden staff — A roughly two-meter tree support taken from outside an Eden dormitory and used to stop the charging bull 12 13.
- Food projectiles — Uses peanuts, a cherry tomato, and even a discarded lollipop stick as thrown objects 12 19 38.
Relationships
- Phoenix's leader — His trainer, boss, and mission handler. Karen complains about withheld earnings and dangerous assignments but insists that the organization respect his principles concerning peace 3 7 29 33.
- Anya Forger — Student and confidante who knows his secret identity. Karen protects her, supplies sweets, helps her father's class-assignment plan, and later relies on her acting to escape Yor 10 20 22 46.
- Twilight / Loid Forger — A social acquaintance whose cooking Karen enjoys, but also an infiltrator Karen recognizes and confronts. Karen alternates between assisting his plans and attacking him for entertainment 16 22 23 35 37 38.
- Yor Forger / Thorn Princess — A feared rival and Anya's mother. Karen repeatedly tries to avoid fighting her, while keeping her assassin identity from Twilight 2 5 21 44 46.
- Henry Henderson — Colleague who admires Karen's commitment to peace and child welfare but regularly reprimands his manners and conduct 9 13 15 25 35.
- Murdoch Swan — Hostile colleague whom Karen assaults for humiliating Anya. Swan's subsequent attempt to have him dismissed fails 13 14 17.
- Yuri Briar — Secret-police pursuer whom Karen repeatedly defeats and mocks. Karen recognizes Yuri's determination and improvement but does not reveal his occupation to Yor 42 44 45 46.
- Councilman Graff and family — Protection clients whose lives Karen defends against a large-scale assassination attempt 29 31 33.
- Becky Blackbell — One of the prominent students covered by his protection assignment; she admires his appearance when he gives her candy 6 25.
