Xiao Yan grew up in the Wutan City branch of the Xiao Clan, whose members descended from Xiao Xuan. After his grandfather’s death, the family had left the Jia Ma Empire’s Imperial Capital and settled in Wutan City, where it competed with the Jia Lie and Ao Ba families over local businesses 162 237.

His early cultivation made him the clan’s hope for the future, but his sudden regression at twelve overturned that position. For three years, he endured public ridicule, failed assessments, and the belief that he could no longer cultivate. Xiao Zhan continued trying to help him, while Xiao Xun’er remained devoted despite his growing tendency to avoid her concern 71 74.

The cause was Yao Chen’s soul inside the Bone Flame Ring. When Yao Chen admitted absorbing his Dou Qi, Xiao Yan angrily threw the ring off a cliff. They subsequently became master and disciple, with Yao Chen guiding his recovery and preparing to teach him the Flame Mantra 76 86 127 132.

Xiao Yan is proud, resilient, and particularly sensitive to humiliation directed at his family. His three-year challenge began not merely as a response to Nalan Yanran’s rejection, but as a promise to restore Xiao Zhan’s dignity. Even after losing Xiao Tian Ce’s confidence, he reaffirmed that surviving hardship would only make him stronger 76 155 285.

He values personal loyalty over political convenience. After absorbing three Heavenly Flames, his first concern was fulfilling his promise to resurrect Yao Chen. He also refused Gu Yuan’s demand that he kill Xiao Yi Xian, Yun Yun, and Qing Lin, arguing that betraying his friends would make him untrustworthy 194 262.

His attachment to Xun’er can override clan interests. He helped secure her release from Heaven Beyond and agreed to assist the Gu Clan, provoking Xiao Tian Ce’s criticism that he benefited from Xiao Clan protection without prioritizing the clan itself. The Three-Year Agreement

Nalan Yanran’s attempt to dissolve their engagement publicly humiliated Xiao Yan and Xiao Zhan. Xiao Yan refused her compensation, issued his own blood-sealed Divorce Letter, and accepted a duel at the Misty Cloud Sect three years later 75 76.

After recovering under Yao Chen, he defeated Nalan Yanran in a single move. He burned the letter and declared that she no longer had any connection to the Wutan City Xiao Clan. Yun Leng’s intervention escalated the duel into a wider conflict, forcing Xiao Yan and his allies to fight their way out 155 158 160 161.

The Missing Xiao Clan and Misty Cloud Sect Battles

Returning home, Xiao Yan found the entire Wutan City clan missing. Despite Yao Chen’s doubts about the Misty Cloud Sect’s responsibility, he confronted Yun Shan and became trapped in another battle. His three-colored Fire Lotus devastated the sect, but escape ultimately required Yao Chen to reveal a Heavenly Mechanism Token and threaten Heavenly Secret Tower retaliation 165 166 169.

He later returned to the Jia Ma Empire because the sect had targeted his brothers. By the time Xiao Tian Ce learned of the outcome, Xiao Yan had toppled the Misty Cloud Sect and reunited with Xiao Ding and Xiao Li 217 229.

Jia Nan Academy and the Ancestors

At Jia Nan Academy, Xiao Yan sought the Fallen Heart Flame beneath the Heavenly Burning Qi Refining Tower. The Tou She Ancient God Jade absorbed its origin fire while he evaded the flame python, and Xiao Tian Ce’s safeguards helped make the eventual absorption unusually smooth 184 187 194.

Xiao Tian Ce then revealed himself as Xiao Yan’s ancestor and explained that the greater Xiao Clan had taken his family away. Xiao Yan helped resurrect Huang Jiuji, received instruction from Xiao Xuan, and finally reunited with Xiao Zhan in Heaven Beyond. He subsequently brought a Young Fallen Heart Flame back to Jia Nan Academy 195 197 205 206 229.

Gu Clan Bargain and Lost Inheritance

Xiao Yan helped secure Xun’er’s freedom from Heaven Beyond, where she had remained as a hostage following the Gu Clan’s submission. Gu Yuan then used the possibility of their marriage to demand help obtaining a Dou Di opportunity for his clan 237 250 262 263.

Xiao Yan pursued the Ancient Emperor’s Inheritance but lost Xiao Tian Ce’s trust. The ancestor revealed that he had once intended both the Nihility Devouring Flame and the inheritance for Xiao Yan, but withdrew that support because Xiao Yan placed the Gu Clan’s interests ahead of the Xiao Clan’s. Xiao Xuan lamented that this had cost him his opportunity to become a Dou Di on the Dou Qi Continent 265 284.

After leaving Heaven Beyond with Xiao Yi Xian and Qing Lin, Xiao Yan lived in Qingshan Town and eventually reunited with Xun’er 288.

Independent Path in the Great Thousand World

Xiao Yan recovered with Luo Tianshen’s help before leaving Luoshui City. In the Primordial Secret Realm, he found a Heavenly Sovereign’s remains and advanced to Lower Earthly Sovereign. After reuniting with Xun’er, he continued pursuing his own path 325 367.

He later joined the allies gathering to confront the True Phoenix Clan and reconciled with Xiao Tian Ce, who offered future help and reaffirmed their family bond. Xiao Yan also assisted Xun’er with a well-timed surprise attack during the battle. The couple subsequently declined positions in White Jade Capital so they could venture out independently 400 408 417.

Founding the Endless Fire Domain

The Western Heaven War Emperor and Mohe Tian disrupted the Endless Fire Domain’s founding ceremony by demanding that Xiao Yan demonstrate his strength. Xiao Xuan initially intervened on White Jade Capital’s behalf, but Xiao Yan ultimately fought the challengers himself 473 474 475.

His Heavenly Flame Lotus broke the War Emperor’s golden cauldron, earning acknowledgment of his strength. Against Mohe Tian, Xiao Yan used flame-based attacks and negotiated time to prepare a fusion of twenty-two Heavenly Flames. Watching his performance, Xiao Tian Ce predicted that within a hundred years the War Emperor might no longer be qualified to stand before him 475 476.
