Background / History

Xiao Xuan grew up alongside his younger cousin Xiao Tian Ce, and the two fought shoulder to shoulder. Together with Xiao Chen, they became known as the Three Talents of the Xiao Clan. Xiao Xuan distinguished himself through cultivation, consistently surpassing others of his generation 1 8 10.

A century before Xiao Tian Ce's awakening, Hun Tiandi ambushed Tian Ce and stole Nihility Devouring Flame. Xiao Xuan answered Tian Ce's distress message, recovered his unconscious cousin, and brought him home. He then confronted the Hun Clan; Gu Yuan later recalled that Xiao Xuan had subdued the clan single-handedly and severely injured Hun Tiandi. Xiao Xuan was also injured during the incident and entered seclusion after recovering 1 5 10.

As patriarch, he became increasingly concerned about the Xiao Clan's weakening inherited bloodline. For hundreds of years, only he and Tian Ce had awakened god-grade bloodline power, while the highest grade produced during the preceding century was eighth-tier. He feared that the clan would eventually cease producing Dou Sheng experts and become vulnerable to the other ancient clans 2.

Xiao Chen's disappearance and Tian Ce's prolonged unconsciousness left Xiao Xuan shouldering the clan's burden largely alone. These circumstances contributed to his conviction that becoming Dou Di and creating a renewed bloodline was the only way to secure the clan's future 245.

He had previously trained in the Heavenly Tomb alongside Tian Ce, Xiao Chen, and other clansmen. The Xiao and Gu Clans jointly controlled the tomb, taking turns guarding it every hundred years 191 231.

After his failed breakthrough and fatal injuries, Xiao Xuan preserved his complete soul within the Heavenly Tomb for more than a thousand years. Tian Ce eventually reunited with him and arranged his resurrection. Xiao Xuan later achieved the Dou Di breakthrough that had eluded him, traveled to the Great Thousand World, and continued supporting Tian Ce and White Jade Capital 58 191 192 199 308 463 512.

Personality

Xiao Xuan is proud, forceful, and exceptionally determined. He openly asserts his authority as patriarch when challenged over the bloodline plan, yet cannot bring himself to kill Tian Ce when his cousin refuses to cooperate. His ambition reflects both concern for the clan's decline and a personal conviction that life without pursuing Dou Di would be meaningless 3 24.

His confidence in his own strength shapes his judgment. Although he knows that origin qi is necessary for becoming Dou Di and that Tou She Ancient God's cave abode offers another possible route, he insists on pursuing his chosen path. He later refuses an additional year that Tian Ce believes would allow him to protect the entire clan, admitting that his obsession has made him an unfit leader 7 33.

He is nevertheless capable of trust, affection, and self-sacrifice. He supports Tian Ce's escape preparations, exempts children from bloodline extraction, and offers his own corpse for use as a protective puppet if he dies. His exchanges with Tian Ce and Gu Yuan frequently include hearty laughter and teasing 6 7 11 33.

Xiao Xuan also enjoys combat. He initiates a spar to test Tian Ce's unfamiliar methods and, even after suffering irreversible injuries, takes delight in an intense exchange with Hun Tiandi 31 45 46.

After resurrection, his pride coexists with profound guilt. He calls himself a failure and declines to meet the clansmen, believing that his stubbornness caused their slaughter and that his suffering has not erased his responsibility. Rather than reclaiming public leadership, he chooses to protect them quietly 204.

He can acknowledge another person's superiority despite his forceful disposition. On learning how far Tian Ce has raised the Xiao Clan, he openly admits that Tian Ce has surpassed him and accomplished what he could not 191.

His ambition extends beyond Dou Di: after learning about the Great Thousand World's cultivation system, he expresses a desire to pursue the Great Ruler realm. Although he initially refuses the Emperor Grade Nascent Pill as a shortcut to Dou Di, he eventually advances with Emperor's Origin supplied by Tian Ce 213 463.

His determination remains evident during imprisonment by the Blood God Clan. Despite torture and an inability to use his cultivation, he refuses to disclose the methods his captors demand and threatens retaliation if he survives 308 320.

In later life, he maintains that neither the clan nor Tian Ce has shackled him and says he has no regrets about protecting Tian Ce and White Jade Capital. Bloodline Plan and Survival Arrangements

Xiao Xuan proposes gathering the clan's bloodline power despite estimating his chance of success at less than ten percent. Tian Ce refuses, warning that failure would leave the clan defenseless. Xiao Xuan grants his branch ten years to prepare its departure and entrusts Tian Ce with the clan's future if the attempt fails 3.

He agrees to stage the branch's destruction to conceal its survival from enemy spies. When Tian Ce later offers his branch's bloodline voluntarily, Xiao Xuan declines, stating that the other branches' contributions are sufficient 7 8.

He also approaches Gu Yuan for assistance against the Hun Clan, offering to exchange a captured Nihility Devouring Flame for the Gu Clan's Golden Emperor Burning Heaven Flame. Gu Yuan agrees to cooperate 10 11.

Testing His Successor

Nine years into the arrangement, Xiao Xuan tests Tian Ce's eighth-tier Spiritual Arrays. Although he eventually breaks all four arrays deployed against him, their power reassures him that Tian Ce can preserve the clan after his death 30 31 32.

He still refuses to postpone the breakthrough for another year. Instead, he arranges for children from every branch to retain their bloodlines and leave with Tian Ce, who promises to treat them equally 33.

Staged Purge

Xiao Xuan and Tian Ce publicly perform a dispute over bloodline extraction. Xiao Xuan appears to destroy Tian Ce's body and soul, then crushes a spatial sphere enclosing his branch. The apparent massacre conceals their escape rather than constituting an actual purge 36.

Three days later, he announces that bloodline collection is complete and seals the Xiao Realm for seclusion. Reports of shattered life tablets persuade Hun Tiandi that Tian Ce's branch is genuinely dead, despite doubts among his allies 36 37.

Failed Breakthrough and Hun Clan Attack

After emerging from seclusion, Xiao Xuan kills Hun scouts and travels to the Heavenly Star Mountain Range without concealing his destination. There, he absorbs the collected bloodline and violent ambient Dou Qi, reaching Half-Step Dou Di before golden lightning ends the attempt 43 44 45.

Hun Tiandi arrives with Nihility Devouring Flame and the Hun Clan's Eight-Star experts. He reveals his role in supplying the bloodline-gathering scroll, but Xiao Xuan insists that the decision remained his own and challenges him to fight 45.

The Hun experts establish the Realm of Death using four Gates of Dead Silence. Xiao Xuan drives Hun Tiandi back, prompting Nihility Devouring Flame to join the battle while they wait for his injuries to worsen. Their attacks initially fail to break his defense 46 47.

Meanwhile, Hun forces invade the weakened Xiao Realm. Tian Ce intervenes, evacuates the survivors, and assumes the position of acting clan leader 47 49.

Xiao Xuan subsequently feigns weakness, breaks the Death Realm Formation, and kills Hun Yuantian, Hun Shengtian, Hun Yao, and Hun Motian, reducing their bodies to ashes. Hun Tiandi and Nihility Devouring Flame are also badly injured; the latter narrowly avoids losing its sentience through Hun Tiandi's intervention 53.

Gu Yuan arrives with the Three Immortals of the Gu Clan after being delayed by a Hun operation against the Gu Clan's Tou She Ancient God Jade. Hun Tiandi then learns that the soul tablets of the experts sent to the Xiao Realm have shattered. Xiao Xuan infers that Tian Ce and Xiao Qing intercepted them, and Hun Tiandi escapes with Nihility Devouring Flame rather than continuing the confrontation 53 54.

Despite surviving the battlefield, Xiao Xuan's condition remains terminal. He refuses Gu Yuan's healing pill, estimates that he has about two days left, and arranges to visit the Gu Clan the following day to settle his final affairs 54.

Death and Entry into the Heavenly Tomb

Xiao Xuan asks Gu Yuan to let him enter the Heavenly Tomb so he can wait for the Xiao Clan's descendants and leave opportunities for them as atonement. Gu Yuan warns that a soul entering the tomb cannot return to the outside world, but Xiao Xuan remains resolute 58.

At the entrance, he separates his Emperor Realm soul from his body and sends the body into turbulent void currents. He declines the prospect of a lonely grave and asks Gu Yuan to look after any surviving Xiao clansmen. His complete soul enters the tomb, where his forceful rebuke of the Heavenly Tomb Spirit quickly settles the resulting disturbance 58 192.

Gu Yuan's attempt to recover the body fails, and he orders Gu Dao to build a cenotaph. Xiao Xuan's original body is later identified as the body used by Heavenly Net, whose soul belongs to Tian Ce; Heavenly Net is therefore distinct from Xiao Xuan's subsequently resurrected self 58 257.

Although Xiao Xuan killed the four Hun experts maintaining the Death Realm Formation, their deaths do not permanently remove them: Tian Ce recognizes that the Hun Clan possesses a secret resurrection technique 64 91.

Reunion, Resurrection, and Concealed Service

After more than a thousand years, Tian Ce secretly enters the Heavenly Tomb's third layer and reunites with Xiao Xuan. He explains that the Xiao Clan has become the strongest Emperor Clan, recounting the Hun Clan's defeat and the destruction of the Stone and Spirit Clans. Xiao Xuan is gratified and openly acknowledges that Tian Ce has surpassed him 191.

When Tian Ce offers to take him outside, Xiao Xuan explains that the Heavenly Tomb Spirit forbids his departure. Tian Ce undertakes to handle the obstacle and later brings Xiao Yan into the tomb with bodies and materials for resurrection 191 199.

Xiao Yan and Tian Ce resurrect Xiao Xuan, restoring him to Peak Nine-Star Dou Saint. Xiao Xuan agrees to strengthen Xiao Yan's bloodline, while Tomb Spirit offers to improve the younger man's soul realm 199.

Rather than return openly to the clan, Xiao Xuan requests a mask and chooses to become Tian Ce's guard. He considers his failed breakthrough and the resulting deaths a personal failure that cannot be erased merely by his own suffering. He later teaches Xiao Yan the Heavenly Fire Three Mysterious Transformations and leaves the Heavenly Tomb with the group 204 205.

Ancient Clan Conflicts and Reconciliation

After learning that Gu Yuan and other ancient-clan leaders have committed to opposing the Xiao Clan, Xiao Xuan is visibly disturbed. He and Tomb Spirit subsequently confront the Yan Clan within the Flame Realm 212 215.

During the campaign against the Hun Clan, Xiao Xuan leads Xiao grand supreme elders toward Sacred Pill City, while Tomb Spirit leads another group to the Heavenly Underworld Sect. The Hun experts in both locations are wiped out, leaving the clan largely reduced to Hun Tiandi, Nihility Devouring Flame, and scattered survivors 220.

Xiao Xuan later works to spare the Gu Clan despite its conflict with Tian Ce. At the confrontation over Yan Jin, he privately reveals his identity to Gu Yuan and explains that he prevented Tian Ce from destroying the clan. When Gu Yuan refuses to betray his alliance by killing Yan Jin, Xiao Xuan holds off the Gu experts while Tomb Spirit kills him 231.

Removing his mask confirms his resurrection to Gu Yuan. Xiao Xuan promises to spare the remaining Yan clansmen and announces Xiao Qing's succession ceremony in three days. Gu Yuan agrees to restore friendly relations and attend with available Dou Sheng experts and gifts, emphasizing that his trust rests on Xiao Xuan personally 231 232.

Renewed Pursuit of Dou Di

Tian Ce explains the Great Thousand World, the sealing of its passage by Tou She Ancient God, and its broader cultivation system. Learning that Dou Di likely corresponds to Earthly Sovereign, Xiao Xuan expresses an ambition to pursue the Great Ruler realm. He initially rejects Tian Ce's Emperor Grade Nascent Pill after receiving its refinement method 213.

He later receives a portion of Emperor's Origin and focuses on reaching Dou Di. His possession of an Emperor Grade Pill prompts Gu elders to suggest targeting him, but Gu Yuan rejects attacking his close friend 253 257 264.

During this period, Xiao Xuan does not interrupt his seclusion to meet Xiao Yan before the Heavenly Tomb Trial. Although he voices concern over Tian Ce's treatment of his descendant, he accepts Tian Ce's decision while stressing that Xiao Yan remains a member of the Xiao Clan 276 284 285.

His later Dou Di status and Tian Ce's retrospective explanation establish that he ultimately succeeds using the Emperor's Origin Tian Ce supplied 308 463.

Journey to the Great Thousand World and Blood God Clan Captivity

Xiao Xuan joins the party traveling through the dangerous spatial passage to the Great Thousand World. His group survives a spatial storm with the aid of Huang Min and Ling Yun's Nirvana Flame before reuniting with Tian Ce and continuing under his Spiritual Array protection 291.

Upon crossing into the Great Thousand World, Xiao Xuan is transported directly into the Blood God Clan's forbidden grounds. Unable to use his Dou Qi before spiritual-energy assimilation, he nevertheless resists with his Dou Di physique and a protective Grandmaster-Level Spiritual Array pendant, killing two Fifth-Grade Sovereigns before being captured 308.

Xue Yi repeatedly tortures him for his body-cultivation and pendant-refining methods.
