Background / History
Eight Clans’ Grand Tournament
Approximately 120 years before Xiao Wu’s account, Hun Tiandi attempted to secure victory in the Eight Clans’ grand tournament by having Hun Clan fighters and two experts from the Lei and Yan Clans hold Xiao Xuan back. Xiao Tian Ce and Xiao Chen intercepted him, preventing his advance. Although Tian Ce had only recently reached Three-Star Dou Sheng, Xiao Wu credited his combat strength as sufficient to rival Hun Tiandi at the time 26.
Ambush and Xiao Xuan’s Retaliation
A century before Xiao Tian Ce awakened, Hun Tiandi ambushed him after he obtained the Nihility Devouring Flame from a secret realm. He stole the flame before Tian Ce could refine it and inflicted injuries that left him unconscious for a hundred years 1 17.
Xiao Xuan rescued Tian Ce and then attacked the Hun Clan alone. Unable to defeat him individually, Hun Tiandi ordered the clan’s Dou Sheng experts to join the fight. Xiao Xuan severely wounded Hun Tiandi despite being surrounded, though his own injuries required thirty years to heal 5 10.
Scheme Against the Xiao Clan
Hun Tiandi arranged for Xiao Xuan to receive the scroll that encouraged him to gather the Xiao Clan’s Dou Di bloodline for a breakthrough. He later admitted that this minor trick had produced a much greater result than expected: Xiao Xuan’s failed attempt left him gravely injured while stripping his clansmen of their bloodline power 45.
After learning of the impending breakthrough, Hun Tiandi consulted the Nihility Devouring Flame, who explained that the world lacked the origin qi necessary to become a Dou Di. The two agreed to kill Xiao Xuan during the weakness following his failure. Hun Tiandi also sought information about Tou She Ancient God’s Cave Mansion, although the flame privately recognized this motive 21.
When reports claimed that Xiao Xuan had killed Tian Ce and destroyed his branch, Hun Tiandi convened the clan elders to plan the Xiao Clan’s extermination and seizure of its Tou She Ancient God Jade. He dismissed doubts about the reported deaths because the branch’s life tablets had shattered. In reality, the tablets had been substituted and broken to conceal the branch’s escape 37 38.
Battle in the Heavenly Star Mountain Range
Hun Tiandi watched Xiao Xuan’s breakthrough attempt from hiding, then confronted him immediately after its failure. He brought the Nihility Devouring Flame and all four of the Hun Clan’s Eight-Star elders, intending to kill Xiao Xuan while another force attacked the Xiao Realm 44 45 46.
The elders trapped the combatants inside the Realm of Death formation. Hun Tiandi initially exchanged attacks with Xiao Xuan, but called the Nihility Devouring Flame to assist after being driven back. His aim was to prolong the fight until Xiao Xuan could no longer suppress his injuries, rather than defeat him through a direct contest of strength. Their combined attacks remained unable to break Xiao Xuan’s defense in the next recorded exchange 46 47.
Meanwhile, Xiao Tian Ce counterattacked the invasion force and sealed the Xiao Realm’s space. Hun Yuanpo’s attempt to warn Hun Tiandi that Tian Ce was alive failed because outgoing communications were blocked 49.
Xiao Xuan subsequently feigned weakness, broke the Realm of Death formation, and killed all four supreme elders. Hun Tiandi and the Nihility Devouring Flame were badly battered, but Hun Tiandi continued attacking as Xiao Xuan's strength waned, unleashing his strongest Heaven-Tier High-Level technique, Living Soul Annihilates Heaven 53.
Gu Yuan arrived with the Three Immortals of the Gu Clan before Hun Tiandi could finish Xiao Xuan. His arrival revealed the failure of a simultaneous Hun Clan operation against the Gu Clan's Tou She Ancient God Jade, which had delayed him. Hun Tiandi openly admitted employing these tricks and attempted to persuade Gu Yuan not to intervene 53 54.
During the standoff, Hun Tiandi received confirmation that the soul tablets of every Dou Sheng sent to the Xiao Realm had shattered. Facing Gu Yuan and a dying Xiao Xuan determined to take him down, he feigned readiness for a decisive battle, then seized the Nihility Devouring Flame and escaped into the void 54.
Investigation of the Xiao Realm and Resurrection Preparations
After returning to the Hun Clan, Hun Tiandi confirmed the loss of more than a hundred Dou Sheng. He ordered preparations to resurrect the Four Grand Supreme Elders, having preserved a sliver of each elder's soul power before the battle. He then healed his own injuries with a Ninth Grade Profound Pill and personally investigated the Xiao Realm 55.
His Heaven Realm Great Perfection soul power found battle traces but no living inhabitants. Unable to determine whether the Xiao Clan had been annihilated, he sensed an unfamiliar trace and ordered the Soul Hall to investigate suspicious newcomers throughout the Central Plains. The trace was later recognizable to him as resembling Xiao Tian Ce's spiritual arrays 55 95.
The destruction of the invasion force severely depleted the Hun Clan. Hun Tiandi later recalled that the clan had been forced to expend reserves accumulated over tens of millions of years to increase its number of experts 247.
Confrontation with the Returned Xiao Clan
After the Xiao Clan's long seclusion, Hun Tiandi considered using Hun Miesheng's killing of Xiao Tian Yun to test the returned clan's strength. Although he displayed confidence before the Nihility Devouring Flame, he privately remained wary of Xiao Tian Ce and the Xiao Clan's Heavenly Fire Three Mysterious Transformations 91.
Xiao Tian Ce trapped Hun Tiandi, the Nihility Devouring Flame, and the resurrected Four Demon Saints inside the ninth-tier Nine Dragons Ascension Array. Hun Tiandi stopped the elders from wasting strength on ineffective attacks and assigned the flame to search for a weakness. Heavenly Net and Old Phoenix entered the array to challenge the elders and their Realm of Death formation 95.
As the battle worsened, Hun Tiandi intervened to protect the injured elders and urged the Nihility Devouring Flame to prevent further damage that might make their recovery impossible. He then activated his Dou Di bloodline through a secret technique, temporarily reaching Half-Emperor strength and breaking the Nine Dragons Ascension Array by brute force 97 98 99.
Xiao Tian Ce immediately enclosed him and the flame in the Ten Thousand Swords Divine Domain Array and Heavenly Fire Prairie Array. Hun Tiandi used his secret technique again, broke the fire array, and attempted to damage the sword array, but a sword of light pierced his heart. When Xiao Tian Ce deployed the Ten Thousand Ghosts Devouring Soul Formation, Hun Tiandi detonated a Gate of Dead Silence to destroy its attack and barrier 99.
Heavenly Net blocked their escape, but Shi Zhong Tian attacked him from behind, allowing Hun Tiandi and the Nihility Devouring Flame to flee through the void. This intervention prevented Xiao Tian Ce from killing Hun Tiandi and completing the destruction of the Hun Clan in that operation 99 104 118.
Concealment of the Soul Realm and Sacrificial Recovery
Returning gravely wounded, Hun Tiandi ordered every Dou Sheng in the clan to mobilize the Soul Realm's spatial nodes. With Xiao Clan forces approaching, the clan concealed and relocated the entire realm within three breaths. The operation caused buildings to collapse and killed some nearby clansmen through leaking spatial power 101.
The Soul Realm hid in the void turbulence northeast of the Central Plains and continued moving to evade discovery. Hun Tiandi's repeated use of his secret technique had damaged his origin power, leaving him in prolonged agony. Xiao Tian Ce initially estimated that full recovery would take seven or eight years and later suggested five or six years even with further secret techniques 104 122 141 208.
The Nihility Devouring Flame proposed using another Emperor Clan's bloodline to heal him. Hun Tiandi rejected the risk and instead ordered the extraction of bloodline power from hundreds of thousands of his own clansmen. By the time he reemerged, the flame had refined most of the Hun Clan's Dou Zun and Dou Sheng, replenishing Hun Tiandi's lost essence and helping him recover and fully reach Half-Emperor strength 122 208.
Expendable Forces and the Four-Clan Alliance
Hun Tiandi scattered the clan's remaining known experts across the Central Plains as expendable forces, drawing the Heavenly Secret Tower's attention while leaving weaker survivors in the drifting Soul Realm. The Soul Hall resurfaced and attacked the Pill Region as part of these operations 208 209.
He and the Nihility Devouring Flame then entered the Ancient Realm to negotiate with Gu Yuan, Yan Jin, Lei Ying, and Zhu Kun. Hun Tiandi admitted that the Hun Clan could not withstand the Xiao Clan and presented the sacrifice of its renowned members as a way to preserve its weaker bloodline. He proposed that the Four-Clan Alliance wage war against the Xiao Clan in exchange for four portions of emperor's origin, which the flame claimed to know how to obtain 209.
Learning that Xiao Tian Ce had already taken the Emperor Grade Nascent Pill initially led Hun Tiandi to speak of killing a few Xiao Clan members and announcing surrender. The flame instead revealed that the more valuable Ancient Emperor's Inheritance remained beneath the Heavenly Flame Plaza and offered assistance to whoever gained its recognition 210 211.
The four leaders agreed to cooperate. Hun Tiandi estimated that eliminating the scattered Hun Clan forces would occupy the Xiao Clan for at least three months. He asked the Four Clans to cover these expendable forces and then delay the Xiao Clan without exhausting their own strength or provoking an uncontrollable confrontation 211.
Entrapment in the Ancient Emperor's Cave Mansion
Hun Tiandi and the Nihility Devouring Flame ultimately deceived their allies, using the seal of the Light-and-Shadow Space to keep Gu Yuan and the others outside while entering the cave mansion themselves. Hun Tiandi intended to obtain the Ancient Emperor's Inheritance, become a Dou Di, and then destroy both the Xiao Clan and the Gu Clan 223.
Xiao Tian Ce had already placed a spiritual array around the inheritance's stone stele. When the flame tried to approach it, the array repelled him. Xiao Tian Ce then sealed the entrance region and trapped the pair within the grandmaster-level Fengtian Grand Formation, also called the Heaven-Sealing Array 223 224 225 226.
The array drained their soul power, prevented expended Dou Qi from recovering, and raised the surrounding heat. Hun Tiandi borrowed the flame's Dou Qi to enlarge and detonate his three remaining Gates of Dead Silence, but the explosion failed to damage the array and gravely injured him 225.
The Nihility Devouring Flame then stabbed him and revealed his longstanding desire to devour him. Hun Tiandi persuaded Xiao Tian Ce to suspend the array's heat while they settled their conflict, burned his bloodline power to restore Half-Emperor strength, and revealed a Soul Annihilation Stone secretly containing a sliver of the flame's soul. Crushing it instantly annihilated the flame's sentience, leaving only the Heavenly Flame itself 225 226.
Apparent Death and Concealed Survival
Unable to persuade Xiao Tian Ce to enter the array, Hun Tiandi calmly questioned him about the origins of his spiritual-array methods and learned that they came from the Great Thousand World. He then requested mercy for the ordinary Hun Clan members still hiding in the void turbulence, claiming that they lacked the talent to rise beyond Dou Zun 226.
Xiao Tian Ce agreed to spare them provided they did not seek trouble within the next ten thousand years. Hun Tiandi offered to self-detonate as proof that the clan would no longer pose a threat. He also described a dream in which the Hun Clan nearly unified the Dou Qi Continent, a vision that had once strengthened his confidence in its destiny 226.
Hun Tiandi apparently vanished, leaving only the Nihility Devouring Flame and spatial storage rings. Xiao Tian Ce inspected the rings, found no remaining trace of his aura, and initially regarded his enemy as dead. In reality, Hun Tiandi had abandoned his physical body, faked his death, and concealed his soul inside Xiao Tian Ce 226 247.
Failed Possession and Final Death
Hun Tiandi remained hidden for more than five years, escaping detection even by Xiao Tian Ce's Emperor Realm soul power and Ling'er's observation. He waited for Xiao Tian Ce's advance to Dou Di, intending to possess his body, take the breakthrough for himself, and destroy the Xiao Clan. He claimed that his possession technique had been created by the Hun Clan's Dou Di ancestor, the Soul Emperor 247.
Xiao Tian Ce had suspected another hidden scheme since Hun Tiandi's apparent surrender, but only detected his presence during the breakthrough. He inscribed two grandmaster-level spiritual arrays on his evolving body and gambled that Hun Tiandi's desire to become a Dou Di would make him wait until the final moment to attack 247.
The gamble succeeded. Hun Tiandi's possession technique failed, and the Heaven-Devouring Spirit-Absorbing Array began consuming his soul power. Xiao Tian Ce revealed that he had already missed the opportunity to detonate his soul and drag them both to their deaths 247.
As the array's runes invaded his soul, Hun Tiandi's soul realm fell from Emperor Realm through Heavenly Realm and Spirit Realm to below Spirit Realm. He finally stopped resisting, acknowledged that greed and hesitation had cost him his best chance, and declared that the Hun Clan's descendants would someday destroy the Xiao Clan. His soul then fell for good, while Xiao Tian Ce completed his advance to Dou Di 248.
Personality
Hun Tiandi favors decisive advantages over honorable confrontation. He ambushes dangerous opponents, manipulates Xiao Xuan through a planted scroll, and relies on reinforcements and attrition when a wounded enemy remains stronger than him. He openly dismisses criticism of these methods through the principle that victory determines legitimacy 1 45 46.
His hostility does not prevent him from recognizing exceptional opponents. He admires Xiao Xuan’s courage to attempt Dou Di, privately acknowledging that he himself lacked such resolve. He also regards Xiao Tian Ce as a serious threat despite Tian Ce’s lower cultivation. Nevertheless, his confidence in the shattered life tablets allows the Xiao Clan’s staged destruction to deceive him 21 37 44.
His ambitions extend beyond defeating the Xiao Clan: he promises to ascend to Dou Di and unite the Dou Qi Continent 37.
He is willing to retreat when survival is more valuable than maintaining appearances. Against Gu Yuan and Xiao Xuan, he pretends to prepare for a desperate battle before escaping; after his defeat by Xiao Tian Ce, he immediately orders the concealment of the Soul Realm rather than defend its prestige 54 101.
His ruthlessness extends to his own clan. He sacrifices bloodline power and most of its high-level cultivators to recover, then sends renowned survivors out as expendable distractions. He defends these decisions through the belief that victory will silence condemnation, while defeat would at least leave a remnant of the clan's bloodline 122 208 209 211.
His apparent deathbed request for mercy shows his understanding of Xiao Tian Ce's reluctance to slaughter ordinary people, but his subsequent concealed survival reveals that the surrender did not end his ambitions. During his attempted possession, he becomes increasingly vindictive and nearly deranged, threatening to preserve part of Xiao Tian Ce's soul so that he can witness the destruction of everyone close to him 226 247.
His final failure stems from greed rather than an absence of planning. By waiting to seize a completed Dou Di breakthrough instead of acting earlier, he allows Xiao Tian Ce to finish his countermeasures. Once stripped of resistance, he acknowledges that hesitation cost him the opportunity to take his enemy down with him 247 248.

Relationships
- Xiao Xuan — Long-standing enemy and the strongest opponent Hun Tiandi says he has faced during their early confrontation. Hun Tiandi admires his courage but engineers and exploits his failed breakthrough. Xiao Xuan kills the four supreme elders during their final battle, while the injuries sustained in the failed breakthrough and Hun Clan assault eventually cause his death 21 44 45 53 163.
