Background / History
Hongjun and the Elder of Chaos knew one another as Great Dao Demon Gods. Hongjun originally wielded the Immortal Dao’s laws, before becoming fused with the Heavenly Dao of the Primordial World. The terror associated with Pangu and the Heaven-Opening War continued to unsettle him long afterward 722 1072.
He became the Primordial World’s first Sage and opened Zixiao Palace to preach. His teachings led the Three Pure Ones, Nuwa, Jieyin, and Zhunti to Sagehood. His stated underlying purpose was to establish a Sage era through which he could control the world and its inhabitants 245.
Hongjun also bestowed primordial violet qi upon Ancestor Hong Yun. Hong Yun later regarded the opportunity as part of a sinister arrangement that nearly cost him his life, rather than an uncomplicated blessing 205.
Appearance
Hongjun presents as an aged Daoist, but divine light or Chaos energy frequently conceals his face and body 78 547 736.
- Clothing: Simple, ancient Daoist robes during meetings at Zixiao Palace; a black Daoist robe when confronting the world over the catastrophe 433 928.
- Bearing: Often sits motionless in meditation, with a calm expression and an unfathomable gaze 433.
- Manifestations: Appears amid boundless Sage light, thunder, lightning, or Chaos energy 77 378 736.
- After his major advance: His Dao Body is formed from laws and order rather than ordinary flesh and blood; celestial blossoms, golden lotuses, and auspicious radiance accompany his emergence 662.
Personality
Hongjun is authoritarian and calculating. He seeks control over the Primordial World, treats cultivators and religious lineages as pieces in a larger strategy, and regards independent powers outside Heavenly Dao jurisdiction as threats. He is willing to sacrifice disciples of the Sages’ lineages if doing so restores the Profound Gate’s authority 245 408 626 844.
His outward composure repeatedly breaks when Gu Changqing exposes his plans or defeats his followers. He alternates between recruitment, intimidation, attempted killing, and negotiated concessions. These reversals often reflect practical constraints—karma, opposing Sages, and the danger of devastating the world—rather than mercy 141 546 665 831.
Repeated setbacks leave him increasingly weary and fearful. He eventually admits that he has become “afraid of every step” and agrees to unleash a Chaos storm to reshape the world. After another defeat, the Elder of Chaos detects that his remaining personal desires and attachments are disappearing; his later incarnation displays no emotions at all 916 1254 1264.

- After his higher-realm breakthrough, a casually erected barrier leaves Tongtian, Houtu, and Nuwa helpless 665.
Sage Empowerment

Treasure Refinement

- Intends to align the axe with the Profound Gate’s fortune before deciding who may wield it 1179.

- Reckless overuse of borrowed Heavenly Dao power can leave him utterly depleted and unable to fight 1248.
