Geography and Landmarks

Landscape

  • Immortal mountains and emerald waters: Halls and towers stand among mountains, waterways, and dense spiritual mist 1155.
  • Reefs: During Gu Changqing’s great brewing session, meditating disciples occupy even the reefs beyond the island 1035.
  • Spiritual vegetation: The fusion of external spirit veins causes plants to grow rapidly and exotic flowers and herbs to shine as though they had become innate spirit roots 1035.
  • Immortal wildlife: Birds and beasts inhabit the island; immortal cranes wheel above it in later descriptions 982 1257.
  • Normally tranquil environment: The island is repeatedly described as peaceful and serene. The sudden cold produced by Gu Changqing’s Fifth Sword is so unusual that disciples question whether a Sage dojo should experience changing seasons 39 131 902.

Defenses

Interception Sect Protective Formation

  • Controls entry to the island: Gu Changqing opens it for Ancestor Minghe and Kunpeng, while Tongtian opens it for Houtu 267 411 981.
  • Can conceal the island from outside observers. Tongtian withdraws its surrounding concealment so Ao Guang and other experts can witness Gu Changqing’s sword strike 13.
  • Is not impervious to internal disturbances. Gu Changqing’s wind-and-snow sword intent makes it tremble and threatens to break it apart 131.
  • Can be reinforced by the disciples. Duobao drives the mountain-protecting array to its limit to contain shock waves during Luohu’s attempted escape from Hongjun 995.

Sage Protection and Sword Arrays

  • Tongtian shields the island and its hundred-thousand-plus disciples from Gu Changqing’s breakthrough sword intent with his Sage might 41.
  • During the fusion of the Heavenly, Earth, and Human Dao origins, Tongtian deploys the Four Immortal-Slaying Swords, enveloping the island in the Immortal-Slaying Sword Array 635.
  • Gu Changqing considers his Primal Chaos Star Dou Great Array insufficient against a future assault by the Four Saints and seeks to strengthen it further 417.
  • The island’s status as a Sage’s grounds also acts as a deterrent: Di Jun and Taiyi halt outside after Kunpeng gains admission rather than risk attacking it 411.

Chaos Bead Shelter

  • The Chaos Bead projects a complete world around Golden Ao Island, the sect, and every living being upon it 935.
  • This shelter removes the island from the outside world’s perception and karma, defeating the Elder of Chaos’s locked-on attack 935.
  • The disappearance is explicitly distinguished from destruction, teleportation, or ordinary relocation 935.
  • Its capacity is limited: Gu Changqing states that it cannot shelter every living being in the Primordial World 935.

Cultivation Environment

  • Preserved spiritual conditions: When the outside world’s acquired energy becomes impure, Golden Ao Island remains unaffected. Observers call it the only immortal haven amid the wasteland and seek admission to the sect 393.
  • Dao instruction: Gu Changqing teaches the Nine Swords to more than 100,000 disciples, with Tongtian carrying his voice across the island. Outside cultivators also gather to listen 136.
  • Visiting teachers: Hong Yun lectures the assembled disciples, and Nuwa completes a prolonged period of Dao instruction on the island 167 498.
  • Wine-assisted cultivation: Destiny Immortal Brew helps disciples glimpse the Heavenly Dao, while Gengjin wine transforms their sword intent and even sublimates Tongtian’s Sword Dao 173 267.
  • Brewing manifestations: The fusion of nine great spirit springs produces visions of yin and yang, reincarnation, starlight, and the dragon, phoenix, and qilin. Disciples gather around Gu Changqing’s abode to comprehend them 1034.
  • Island-wide breakthroughs: Dao rhythms from the unfinished brew help disciples overcome longstanding bottlenecks. One disciple advances from early to mid-stage Daluo Golden Immortal during the process 1035.

History

Early Sword Manifestations

Golden Ao Island is already Tongtian’s dojo when towering sword qi envelops it and gives him an epiphany inside Biyou Palace. Gu Changqing’s later Daluo breakthrough manifests laws and order above the island, drawing the attention of outside experts and requiring Tongtian to shield the disciples 4 40 41.

The island becomes the setting for several dangerous demonstrations of Gu Changqing’s sword techniques. Sword Opens Heaven’s Gate manifests an immense sword phantom overhead. His Fifth Sword, Wind and Snow Send Guanyin West, later blankets the sanctuary in a sword-intent blizzard, overwhelms the Eight Personal Disciples’ protective efforts, and nearly collapses its formation. Tongtian rebukes him, while Gu Changqing insists he intended to help his fellow disciples comprehend the Sword Dao without harming them 48 131 132 133.

Prestige and Refuge

As Gu Changqing’s influence grows, powerful visitors increasingly come to Golden Ao Island to seek him. Houtu and Ancestor Minghe request audiences, while Nuwa travels there when the Heavenly Dao warns her against directly opposing the Four Saints over humanity 173 267 309.

A contest involving the Three Teachings ends with Tongtian dismissing Laozi and Yuanshi from his island. Outside observers interpret the outcome as establishing the Interception Sect as the foremost Dao lineage of the age. Shortly afterward, Gu Changqing admits the fleeing Kunpeng and receives the River Diagram and Luo Book from him 402 404 411.

Four Saints’ Assault and Sword Dao Ascendancy

When Gu Changqing begins brewing with the Heavenly, Earth, and Human Daos, Laozi, Yuanshi, Jieyin, and Zhunti converge on Golden Ao Island to prevent him from proving primordial unity. Haotian and Yaochi are also dispatched to interfere, while Tongtian prepares to defend his disciple 636 638.

After Gu Changqing’s attainment, the sanctuary becomes a realm unto itself. Later, following his slaying of Zhunti, Jieyin directs a desperate Sage-level strike toward the island. The sect subsequently celebrates Gu Changqing’s return, and Tongtian announces that Biyou Palace will open for three thousand years of Dao instruction 660 799 800 804.

Golden Ao Island also witnesses Hong Yun’s successful attainment of Primordial Daluo Golden Immortal. Its disciples erupt in celebration when he survives both Heavenly Dao Divine Punishment and Yuanshi’s attack 838 840.

Chaos Catastrophe

During the world-ending crisis, desperate experts look toward Golden Ao Island for salvation. The Elder of Chaos targets it with a giant hand intended to erase both the island and Gu Changqing 930 934.

Gu Changqing shelters the entire sanctuary with the Chaos Bead before the strike lands. The island disappears from the battlefield without being destroyed, saving its occupants. Later accounts again show it functioning as his home, while many other sanctuaries along the East Sea shore have been ruined by the Chaos Storm 935 953.

Sacred Court and Heart-Demon Crisis

Gu Changqing teaches the Sacred Court Method to more than a million disciples, binding their collective power and fortune. When Jieyin subsequently appears above the island, he leaves without attacking. The disciples celebrate this as a victory for Tongtian and the method, but Tongtian remains deeply concerned 970 973.

Heart-demons later emerge among the million disciples at once, nearly provoking internal conflict. Houtu visits to investigate and attempts purification through the Dao of reincarnation. Her intervention removes dark-red threads from their bodies, but some remain tightly bound to their divine souls 981 982.

Luohu and Later Confrontations

Gu Changqing detects Luohu hiding outside the island and forces him into view. Hongjun’s arrival raises fears of another catastrophic Dao–Devil conflict; shock waves during Luohu’s attempted escape shake the island and injure weaker beings 989 990 993 995.

Gu Changqing eventually allows Luohu to remain nearby. Luohu establishes a concealed sanctuary outside the island, where Zhunti later attacks him despite Gu Changqing’s deterrent presence. Gu Changqing senses the intrusion and sends divine radiance to assist him 1184 1185 1188.

The Elder of Chaos also returns to challenge the sect after developing a divine ability from the Taisu True Exposition. Tongtian confronts him outside Golden Ao Island, and Tongtian, Nuwa, and Houtu later return after the battle 1105 1106 1107 1120.

Heaven-Opening Axe Seclusion

The Heaven-Opening Divine Axe is later displayed inside Biyou Palace. Gu Changqing enters seclusion with it, while an axe-shaped phantom formed from wine fragrance and axe aura guards his closed doorway 1251 1255.

During this period, the sect’s incense offerings and fortune continue to rise. Upon Gu Changqing’s emergence, laws gather into a towering apparition above the island, subsequently identified as a Pangu Phantom bearing the Dao rhythm of “Beginning” 1257 1258 1260.
