Background / History
Yuanshi is one of the Three Pure Ones, born from Pangu’s Primordial Spirit. He is Laozi’s younger brother and Tongtian’s elder brother. He regards this origin as proof of his membership in the Pangu Orthodox Lineage 33 491 824 841.
As Hongjun’s personal disciple, Yuanshi listened to the Dao at Zixiao Palace alongside his brothers. Hongjun bestowed the Chan Sect Stele upon him, enabling him to establish a great sect and anchor the Primordial World’s fortune 887 946.
Yuanshi originally accepted disciples according to strict standards of innate origin, blessed destiny, and fortune, preferring a small lineage over admitting candidates he considered inferior. His Twelve Golden Immortals were expected to demonstrate the Chan Sect’s superiority at major gatherings, including the first heavenly marriage 31 886.
Appearance
Yuanshi has a stern, imposing face and wears sumptuous Daoist robes. At Chentang Pass, he appears in a black robe with a crown hung with nine strands of beads 33 772.
- Majestic bearing: His presence is accompanied by towering Sage pressure 33 772.
- Artifact Dao aura: He is described as being wreathed in a keen aura of splitting heaven and earth 824.
- Visible battle damage: After losing to Gu Changqing, his robe is torn, blood shows through it, and his aura becomes unstable 648.
Personality
Yuanshi places exceptional importance on dignity, seniority, and the Chan Sect’s reputation. He believes his lineage should surpass the Interception Sect in every respect. Tongtian describes his concern for saving face, while Laozi recognizes that his competitiveness extends even to arguments with junior disciples 41 92.
His rivalry with Gu Changqing repeatedly turns humiliation into murderous intent. He explicitly regards Gu Changqing’s death as necessary for the Twelve Golden Immortals to rise, and at one point becomes willing to accept any consequences if he can kill him 157 273 321.
Despite his temper, Yuanshi is a calculating strategist. He engineers accusations before Hongjun, arranges indirect attacks through subordinates, and seeks to capture humanity’s fortune rather than relying exclusively on open combat. His willingness to admit billions of named disciples later contradicts his original preference for selective recruitment 157 222 886 887.
His confidence in his origins and Heavenly Dao orthodoxy becomes increasingly fragile. Hong Yun’s resistance forces him to acknowledge the advantages of the Primordial path, while Gu Changqing’s later breakthroughs provoke self-doubt, damage to his Dao heart, and the loss of fragments of his Sage origin 841 946 947.
Abilities & Skills
Heavenly Dao Sage Powers
Yuanshi commands Sage-level pressure and laws capable of crushing space and overwhelming lesser cultivators 145 227 772.
- His Primordial Spirit rests within the Heavenly Dao’s void; the Sage path is described as granting indestructibility while the Heavenly Dao remains undying 145.
- Injures Ao Cunxin with a single sentence, without lifting a hand 227.
- Dissolves Shi Ji’s sword attack and then attempts to destroy her at the level of origin 772.
- Manifests a vast palm of laws through an external incarnation 490.
- His status does not prevent injury or defeat: Gu Changqing wounds him despite a four-minor-realm cultivation gap 646 648.
Jade Purity Divine Arts
His principal manifestations include Jade Purity Immortal Light and Yuqing Divine Thunder, accompanied by destructive Dao techniques 647.
- Uses Jade Purity Immortal Light to engulf the Interception Sect’s eight Personal Disciples 699.
- Unleashes chaos sword energy through mudra seals 937.
- Channels Jade Purity Immortal Light through the Three Treasures Jade Ruyi in a full-strength attack 1014.
- Gu Changqing’s sword light annihilates his immortal light and divine thunder during their clash 647.
Artifact Refining Dao
Yuanshi specializes in artifact refinement rather than Tongtian’s killing-oriented Sword Dao 701.
- Considers himself to have attained consummate mastery of artifacts, with scarcely a rival in the Primordial World 1210.
- Recognizes that the aura from Gu Changqing’s cave abode exceeds ordinary Artifact Dao power and can command artifacts 1210.
- Feels suppressed by the Great Artifact-Command Art, which strikes directly at his confidence in his lifelong specialty 1211.
Divine Sense and Divination
Yuanshi possesses keen divine sense capable of examining distant events, identifying hidden cultivation methods, and tracing karmic connections 39 590 766.
- Recognizes that Gu Changqing’s drinking sharpens his sword intent and serves as cultivation 39.
- Sees through Li Tan’s background and vicious nature with Sage Divine Sense 590.
- Divines the karmic connection between Nezha and Shi Ji’s attendant 766.
- Secretly places magic power into Nezha’s sea of consciousness, enabling him to draw the Xuanyuan Bow 766.
- His perception has limits: he cannot explain Gu Changqing’s disappearance before a joint attack with Laozi 898.
External Incarnation
Yuanshi can release an incarnation of his divine sense while his true body remains elsewhere 490 491.
- The incarnation retains his Great Dao attainments and comprehension of laws 491.
- Yuanshi claims it possesses only one or two tenths of his strength 490.
- Its attack is broken by Gu Changqing, forcing it to retreat without obtaining the God-Slaying Spear 490.
Teaching and Environmental Manipulation
- Expounds the Yuqing Great Dao to the Twelve Golden Immortals to strengthen the Chan Sect’s position 1011.
- Works with Laozi to reshape Kunlun Mountain’s laws and restore innate spiritual energy. Their attempt fails because the world’s rules have changed after Buzhou Mountain’s collapse 394.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Pangu Banner — A Heaven-Opening Supreme Treasure formed from the shattered Heaven-Opening Divine Axe. Releases Heaven-Opening Blade Qi and can envelop opposing attacks. Yuanshi surrenders it to Gu Changqing under threat of Kunlun Mountain’s destruction 233 531 647 687.
- Three Treasures Jade Ruyi — A supreme innate spiritual treasure used for close-range attacks. It later trembles in response to Gu Changqing’s artifact-commanding power 1014 1210.
- Myriad Heavens Auspicious Cloud — A defensive treasure bestowed by Hongjun. Protects Yuanshi during his clash with Gu Changqing, but its radiance is diminished by seventy to eighty percent afterward 647 648.
- Void Box — Used to imprison Gu Changqing. Yuanshi opens it only after Tongtian threatens the Chan Sect with the Four Immortal-Slaying Swords 234.
- Chaos Bead — Temporarily borrowed from the Elder of Chaos. A strand of Yuanshi’s divine sense grants him temporary control over its chaos laws and internal Chaos World 777.
- Chan Sect Stele — Bestowed by Hongjun to support the establishment of the Chan Sect and anchor fortune 887.
- Yellow Central Plum fruits — Rare cultivation resources. Yuanshi gives three to Li Tan for advancement toward Daluo Golden Immortal cultivation and later gives three to Taiyi Zhenren as compensation 590 776.
- Eight-Treasure Cloudlight Throne / Seat — His seat in Jade Void Palace during sermons and later observations of Gu Changqing 1011 1210.

- Tongtian — Younger brother and leader of the Interception Sect. Their sect rivalry becomes open enmity when Tongtian threatens the Chan Sect to secure Gu Changqing’s release 33 234.
- Hongjun — Master and source of cultivation instruction, treasures, and strategic support. Yuanshi repeatedly appeals to him to eliminate Gu Changqing and is rebuked for his failures 491 776 887.
- Gu Changqing — Martial nephew and principal enemy. Yuanshi seeks to kill him to protect Chan Sect prestige and his disciples’ prospects, but repeatedly suffers defeat and humiliation 157 648 687 1018.
- Twelve Golden Immortals — Personal disciples upon whom he places great expectations. Their defeats intensify his hostility toward the Interception Sect 31 273 401.
- Taiyi Zhenren — Disciple whom Yuanshi saves from Shi Ji. Gu Changqing subsequently forces Yuanshi to punish him, creating a possible source of resentment between master and disciple 772 776.

- Elder of Chaos — Ally from whom Yuanshi borrows the Chaos Bead to counter Gu Changqing’s supreme treasures 776 777.
- Hong Yun — Rival whose newly attained Primordial power withstands Yuanshi’s attack and triggers a crisis of confidence in his Sage path 840 841.
- Li Tan / Chi You — Chan Sect-backed contender for the Human Emperor position. Yuanshi invests resources in him, then demands compensation when the scheme fails 590 595 596.

- He attempts to prevent Gu Changqing from intervening in the Demon Clan’s attack on humans, but withdraws his opposition when Nuwa and Tongtian support him 186.
East Sea Conflict and the Three Pure Ones’ Rupture

Competition for Prestige and Human Fortune

- He plans to plunder the Witch and Demon Clans’ accumulated resources after their war rather than assist either side 340.
- He tries to recruit the world-stabilizing Black Tortoise into the Profound Gate, offering a future Sage position. The Black Tortoise refuses and remains loyal to Gu Changqing 389.
- He revives the Three Teachings’ contest to restore Chan Sect prestige. His accusations of interference cannot explain Bixiao’s victory, and the subsequent group matches end in further defeats for the Human and Chan Sects 396 400 401.
The God-Slaying Spear
- Yuanshi secretly sends an incarnation to seize the God-Slaying Spear. Gu Changqing breaks its attack, forcing it to retreat 489 490.

- During Gu Changqing’s confinement in the Heaven-Shaking Coffin, Tongtian, Nuwa, and Houtu threaten Laozi, Yuanshi, and their forces. The confrontation escalates into losses among the Chan Sect’s disciples 533 539.
- Yuanshi orders Randeng to eliminate Xuanyuan, then supports Li Tan as a rival Human Emperor candidate. He grants Li Tan access to Chan Sect resources and three Yellow Central Plums 586 590.
- After losing his investment, he demands a share of Human or Earth Dao fortune. Houtu rejects the claim, and Laozi orders him to return rather than continue the confrontation 595 596.
- He later regrets missing the opportunity to gain fortune through Chi You’s position as the Human Race Lord of Soldiers 598.
Defeat and Loss of the Pangu Banner
- Confident in his Sixth Heaven cultivation, Yuanshi attacks Gu Changqing despite the latter’s newly attained Primordial realm. Gu Changqing hurls him back a million li and leaves him injured 646 647 648.
- Yuanshi attributes the defeat to Gu Changqing’s wine and withdraws, promising to settle the score later 648.
- Gu Changqing subsequently threatens Kunlun Mountain with the Human Emperor Brush’s word “Annihilate.” Yuanshi yields the Pangu Banner to prevent the mountain’s destruction 687.
- Without their Heaven-Opening treasures, Yuanshi and Laozi are suppressed by Tongtian in another confrontation. Gu Changqing later severely wounds Yuanshi with the World-Destroying Mill’s power 701 711.
Investiture of the Gods Scheme
- Yuanshi secretly empowers Nezha to shoot the Xuanyuan Bow toward Skull Mountain, intending to begin the Investiture of the Gods calamity through the conflict involving Shi Ji’s attendant 766.
- He intervenes to save Taiyi Zhenren and attempts to destroy Shi Ji, but Gu Changqing nullifies his attack 771 772.
- Gu Changqing’s counter-scheme forces him to punish Taiyi Zhenren. Yuanshi compensates his disciple, then seeks Hongjun and the Elder of Chaos’s help in killing Gu Changqing 776.
- He obtains temporary control of the Chaos Bead, but Gu Changqing’s annihilating power again exceeds his understanding 777 785 786.
- Afterward, he reluctantly accepts Laozi’s advice to restrain their disciples from further involvement with humans or Gu Changqing 803.
Renewed Expansion and Damage to His Dao Heart
- Hong Yun withstands Yuanshi’s attack after attaining the Primordial Dao. Laozi explains the Primordial path’s advantage over Heavenly Dao Sagehood, leaving Yuanshi resentful and shaken 840 841.
