Background / History

Ji Ren first appeared defending a human tribe from demons. Watching his tribespeople and family die drove him into a suicidal frenzy: he tore apart a Heavenly Immortal bird demon and continued fighting despite exhaustion. Gu Changqing secretly restrained the demons with his aura, allowing Ji Ren to kill the remaining attackers 42.

Initially hostile toward the stranger who laughed amid the massacre’s aftermath, Ji Ren changed his attitude after Gu Changqing’s words restored his will to live. Upon recognizing the Wine Sword Immortal, he sought discipleship and offered the divine seal that had protected him. Gu Changqing identified it as the Kongtong Seal, accepted it, and tested Ji Ren by making him drink Flat Peach immortal brew—which immediately knocked him unconscious 43.

Gu Changqing subsequently supplied him with wine obtained from Zhen Yuanzi. During their travels, Ji Ren discovered that drinking purified and transformed his body. By their arrival on Golden Ao Island, he openly introduced himself as Gu Changqing’s disciple, although the Interception Sect disciples mistook his wine-based training for neglect 44 46 47.

Appearance

  • Early appearance: Eight feet tall, exceptionally brawny, and covered in knotted muscles; his physique could be mistaken for that of a Witch Clan member 42.
  • As a Quasi-Saint: Tall and upright, with star-bright eyes, a resolute gaze, and an openly dominant aura 521.
  • Before Sagehood: Handsome, with loose black hair and a simple azure robe. His restrained magical presence contrasted with a bearing likened to a divine sword capable of cleaving Heaven and Earth 892.

Personality

Ji Ren’s central ambition is to make humanity strong enough to withstand predation rather than depend on powerful outsiders. Nuwa recognized that his wish for everyone to wield supreme sword techniques was sincere, not flattery or a pursuit of personal fortune and supremacy 95 124.

His courage develops from grief-driven recklessness into deliberate leadership. He remains capable of fear: Laozi’s threats briefly shake his Dao Heart, and a Demon Race invasion frightens him even as he stands firm for the humans. Gu Changqing’s guidance repeatedly helps him recover his resolve 42 151 182.

He is fiercely reverent toward his master, rebuking disciples who mistake Gu Changqing’s drunkenness for incompetence or hostility. That devotion does not prevent occasional exasperation: he discreetly retreats when Tongtian might discover the Primordial Violet Qi wine and privately questions his master’s apparent unreliability during the Human Emperor crisis 104 314 446 523.

Abilities & Skills

Innate Physical Strength

  • Before gaining cultivation, Ji Ren tore a Heavenly Immortal bird demon apart with his bare hands 42.
  • His initial victory over the entire attacking force was assisted by Gu Changqing’s suppressive aura; it was not an unaided demonstration of his strength 42.

Wine-Based Cultivation

  • Immortal wine cleanses bodily impurities, strengthens his foundation, restores vitality, and supports rapid cultivation 46 47 95.
  • Primordial Violet Immortal Brew refines his magical power, divine sense, primordial spirit, and foundational Dao base 127.
  • Wine also carries instruction: Gu Changqing placed a vision of Mount Shu’s future into a cup, allowing Ji Ren to understand the plan for a human sword lineage 127.
  • His tolerance rose from collapsing after one sip to drinking three jars without changing expression. He still fell short of Gu Changqing’s standard of ten thousand catties without intoxication 47 124.

Sword Dao and Instruction

Ji Ren teaches humanity techniques inherited from Gu Changqing 145 628.

  • A Sword to Make Immortals Kneel
  • Sword Qi Rolls Dragon Wall
  • Two-Sleeved Green Snake
  • Sword Opens Heaven’s Gate

He performs these techniques with polished mastery, although their power at the time of Mount Shu’s early training was reduced by more than a hundredfold compared with Gu Changqing’s execution 145.

His training initially focused on Sword Dao rather than formations. He recognized the Ten Directions Limitless Sword Array used by the Three Human Ancestors as Gu Changqing’s intervention, not an existing Mount Shu discipline 317.

Myriad Swords Saint Art

  • Calls forth humanity’s companion swords and gathers hundreds of millions of strands of sword intent into a vast torrent 584.
  • Allows Ji Ren to overcome a cultivation disadvantage: as a late-stage Quasi-Saint, he defeated peak Quasi-Saint Guangchengzi despite the latter’s Heaven-Flipping Seal 584 585.
  • The demonstrated victory was not a killing blow; Guangchengzi survived and continued confronting him 585 592.

Human Fortune and Destiny Perception

  • His sect’s fortune encompasses vast human populations, enabling him to detect changes in humanity and Xuandu’s covert infiltration 498 522.
  • He sensed the approaching emergence of a Human Emperor but could not identify the destined ruler without seeking Gu Changqing’s guidance 522.
  • Uses inherited human mudra seals to summon and gather humanity’s fortune 900.
  • Directed an azure sword light at the Human Sect’s fortune while proclaiming humanity’s karmic separation from it 893.

Human Dao Sagehood

  • Humanity’s fortune fuses with his Sage body and primordial spirit in a symbiotic relationship 907.
  • His foundation is described as deeper and more solid than that of an ordinary Heavenly Dao Sage 907.
  • Gu Changqing assesses that his newly attained combat strength is probably already no weaker than that of the Four Saints of the Profound Gate 907.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Empress Wa Sword — One of the Three Human Sacred Artifacts bestowed by Nuwa. Ji Ren placed it above Mount Shu when declaring the sect’s establishment 124 148.
  • Empress Wa Zither and Empress Wa Flute — The other two sacred artifacts. Together with the sword, they were intended to suppress and stabilize Human Fortune 124 127.
  • Three Dao Enlightenment Leaves — Gifted by Tongtian when he approved Ji Ren’s plan to establish a human teaching 129.
  • Immortal wine and wine jars — Supplied through Gu Changqing; serve as cultivation resources and vehicles for instruction 46 95 127.
  • Kongtong Seal — former possession — A divine seal that had protected him. He offered it to Gu Changqing while seeking discipleship 43.
  • Sword — Wields a sword when using the Myriad Swords Saint Art; no personal weapon name is supplied 584.

Relationships

  • Gu Changqing — Master and principal benefactor. Ji Ren credits him with saving his life, teaching him the Dao, and making his eventual Sagehood possible 522 900 906.
  • Tongtian — Grandmaster. Approved the Mount Shu undertaking, bestowed Dao Enlightenment Leaves, and celebrated Ji Ren’s ascension as an honor to the Interception Sect 129 907.
  • Nuwa — Humanity’s Holy Mother and patron of his mission. Entrusted him with the Three Human Sacred Artifacts, enabled his path toward Dao attainment, and prepared to defend him against Laozi and Yuanshi 124 627 895.
  • Ao Cunxin — Junior martial sister under Gu Changqing. They initially had little contact because he governed Mount Shu while she worked to strengthen the Dragon Race 453.
  • Suiren Shi, Youchao Shi, and Ziyi Shi — Human ancestors who follow his Sword Dao teaching. He oversees their efforts to spread their own Daos and directs them to drink Gu Changqing’s wine during the Three Teachings conflict 313 316.
  • Xuanyuan — Disciple whose claim to the Human Emperor position Ji Ren defends against Li Tan and the Chan Sect 587 592.
  • Laozi — Opponent over Human Fortune and Mount Shu’s legitimacy. Ji Ren ultimately rejects his authority over humanity and declares the Human Sect abolished 150 151 893.
  • Xuandu — Rival whom Ji Ren regards as a traitor for ignoring humanity’s suffering. Ji Ren also detects his covert activities in human territory 150 522.
  • Guangchengzi — Chan Sect adversary defeated by Ji Ren’s Myriad Swords Saint Art 584 585.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Establishing the Mount Shu Sword Sect

Gu Changqing brought Ji Ren before Nuwa as the person who would carry forward humanity’s development. Ji Ren declared his wish for everyone to wield the Two-Sleeved Green Snake and open Heaven’s Gate with a sword. Nuwa responded by granting him humanity’s three sacred artifacts; he also directly asked why she had not intervened during the Demon Race massacres, prompting her explanation of the Heavenly Dao Shackles 121 123 124.

After receiving the Mount Shu vision through wine and securing Tongtian’s approval, Ji Ren left Golden Ao Island alone to build prestige among humans. He trained tens of thousands in Sword Dao and formally established the Mount Shu Sword Sect, opening its teachings to all humans 127 129 130 145 148.

Laozi attempted to stop the founding through claims of Heavenly Mandate, karmic punishment, and control over Human Fortune. Gu Changqing restored Ji Ren’s wavering resolve, and Ji Ren refused to dissolve the sect even when Laozi invoked a Kongtong Seal 150 151 153.

Defending Humanity and Its Teachings

During a massive Demon Race assault, Ji Ren stood as humanity’s pillar despite knowing that his own strength and reputation would not deter the Demon Saints. He invoked Gu Changqing’s protection, only for Bai Ze to dismiss that hope and order the attack 182.

Later, the Human, Chan, and Western Teachings obstructed Mount Shu’s expansion and diverted Human Fortune. Ji Ren investigated the losses and sought help when their disciples nearly killed the Three Human Ancestors. Recognizing the significance of Gu Changqing’s gifted wine, he urged the ancestors to drink it; they subsequently manifested the Ten Directions Limitless Sword Array 313 316 317.

Human Emperor Conflicts

Ji Ren sensed humanity’s approaching new era and consulted Gu Changqing about the destined Human Emperor. His master advised letting fate decide and identified Fuxi as the first destined ruler, dismissing Xuandu’s schemes 498 522.

During the later struggle surrounding Xuanyuan, Ji Ren defeated Guangchengzi and confronted the assembled disciples of the Three Teachings. Randeng nevertheless overwhelmed the combined human defenders, forcing Ji Ren to call for Gu Changqing’s protection 585 587.

When Li Tan contested Xuanyuan’s claim, Ji Ren exposed the Chan Sect’s involvement and warned that the struggle would bring disaster to humanity. A Sage’s intervention checked his response: he understood that, unlike Gu Changqing, he lacked a Merit Golden Wheel and could not safely confront a Sage at that stage 592 593.

Severing the Human Sect and Attaining the Dao

After a long absence from public view, Ji Ren appeared before Jade Void Palace with sword intent approaching Sagehood. He declared humanity’s karmic ties with Laozi’s Human Sect severed and proclaimed the sect abolished. He then withstood Laozi’s strike unharmed, though Laozi and Yuanshi’s preparations for a joint attack remained a serious threat 892 893 895.

Gu Changqing’s intervention created the opportunity for Ji Ren to command humanity’s liberated fortune. Following his master’s divine-sense instruction, Ji Ren gathered it into himself and broke through to Sagehood 899 900 901 903.

After stabilizing his cultivation, he returned to Golden Ao Island and bowed before Gu Changqing. Tongtian publicly welcomed his granddisciple’s achievement, while Ji Ren remained sincerely grateful to both his master and the Interception Sect 906 907.
