Nature and Geography

• Reverse side of reality: According to Hana Ye’s classroom lessons, the Spirit Realm and the real world are opposite sides of the same whole. Legends also describe it as the destination of the dead 15.
• Distinct from the Warp: Salgon initially mistakes Lin En for an Abyssal Species from the Spirit Realm. Lin En denies this origin and later returns to the Warp from the Second Layer 43 44 47.
• Layered structure: The First Layer lies closest to reality. Salgon warns that repeated spatial collapse could send travelers to the very bottom of the Spirit Realm, but no deeper layer is directly shown in these passages 47.

History

Eternal Night

Hana Ye’s account attributes the broken boundary between reality and the Spirit Realm to the enormous rift in the sky. During Eternal Night, roughly a thousand years earlier, the two worlds became completely entangled. Darkness, monsters, and demons dominated human life 15.

The Valkyrie ended Eternal Night by entering the great rift and becoming the sun that illuminated Seven Nights. Although daylight returned, the Spirit Realm continued to overlap with reality in darkness 3 15 31.

Red Moon Disturbance

More than a decade before Lin En’s arrival, a red moon brought what an exorcist described as the region’s largest Spirit Realm incursion. A legendary greater demon descended, and the Church sent dozens of top exorcists to hunt it down before it could destroy the city 4.

Lin En’s Arrival and Spatial Collapse

The blood moon accompanying Lin En’s arrival appeared unexpectedly, less than seven days after the previous one. Exorcists detected incursions throughout Clockwork City. After reports of an ultra-ancient great demon, the Demon Suppression Corps entered the Spirit Realm, intending to contain any major battle there rather than endanger the physical world 4 17.

During Lin En’s confrontation with Salgon, his second-stage advancement exceeded his human vessel’s capacity. His escaping aura shattered reality and dragged nearby buildings into the Spirit Realm, leaving a blank section of street over a hundred meters across. Lin En, Hana Ye, and Salgon fell through the First Layer into the Second Layer as the collapse continued 46 47.

Lin En sheltered Hana Ye inside his vessel and withdrew his projection to the Warp, taking Salgon’s skull and soul with him. Salgon later assured him that the aura remaining in the abandoned vessel would deter every creature in the Second Layer from approaching Hana Ye 47 49.

Interaction with the Physical World

Spirit Realm Overlay

• Conditions: Overlays occur at night or wherever illumination is insufficient. Even sunless city alleys can harbor evil spirits 15 24.
• Effect: Portions of the physical world are replaced by overlapping Spirit Realm locations, changing the city’s layout from its daytime arrangement 24.
• Navigation hazard: A person may step outside their home and find a different, terrifying location when attempting to return 31.
• Scale: Shakira states that most of Clockwork City experiences encroachment each night 31.

Red Moon Incursions

• The periodic crimson moon blurs the boundary between reality and the Spirit Realm, allowing aberrations and evil spirits to cross into Seven Nights 4.
• The moon accompanying Lin En’s descent leaves the Veil of Reality at a historic energy low 4.
• Salgon states that exposure to the Red Moon can make a Spirit Realm creature trigger the Spirit Bell’s alarm 46.

Crossing Methods and Limits

• Direct entry: Spirits exploit overlays and weakened boundaries to enter the physical world 4 8.
• Summoning: The Ghost Control Sequence allows its user to control evil spirits and summon them from the Spirit Realm regardless of time or location 28.
• Projection: Powerful beings favor mediums and vessels because crossing the barrier directly is difficult and costly 44 45.
• Spatial collapse: An existence too powerful for its surroundings can shatter reality. Lin En’s aura demonstrates that this instability can continue through successive Spirit Realm layers 46 47.

Defenses

• Spirit-Sealing Talismans and sacred statues reduce the likelihood of a household overlay, but are not completely reliable 31.
• Exorcist patrols monitor neighborhoods nightly and respond to overlays, forming Clockwork City’s principal defense against encroachment 31.
• Mithril weapons are used against invading spirits; the modified mithril flintlock permanently applies Holy Flame to its bullets 4 19.
• The Spirit Bell warns of powerful arrivals. Nine tolls accompany Lin En’s descent and later transformation 5 45.

Origin Energy and Sequences

• Source of supernatural power: Origin substance is a manifestation of Spirit Realm power. It naturally forms ability cores within bodies, while Sequences give that power concrete form 38 50.
• Reason for human expeditions: Humans cannot simply isolate themselves from the realm; gaining sufficient power requires venturing into it to draw upon its origin energy 50.
• Impure energy: The realm’s heterogeneous power produces both positive and negative Sequences 50.
• Sequence development: Nurturing a particular Sequence requires suitably uniform, pure energy. Such sources are controlled by powerful human factions or claimed as the lairs of mighty Spirit Realm beings 50.
• Godhood research: Powerful figures in the realm seek to reproduce the Valkyrie’s achievement. Salgon knows of no successful attempt 50.

Inhabitants and Factions

• Heart-Burrowing Demon — A First Layer resident that occasionally accepts bounties and hunts targets in the physical world 13.
• Hanged Ghost — A powerful Second Layer evil spirit captured by Loren’s family for his Ghost Control Sequence 28 29.
• Skeleton Lord Salgon — An undead Spirit Realm native involved in Crimson Secret Cult operations in Seven Nights; later becomes Lin En’s servant 43 46 49.
• Abyssal Species — Tentacled creatures known to Salgon. He claims their former strength was shattered by the war of the gods thousands of years earlier 43 44.
• Crimson Secret Cult — A powerful faction active in both worlds, marked by a red six-pointed star. Its members worship the Crimson King, a Great Demon dating to Eternal Night, and gather intelligence on exorcists, nobles, and the Church 46.
• Near-godhood ability users — Salgon states that top-tier figures approaching godhood still exist in both the physical world and the Spirit Realm 48.
• Outer God loyalists — Spirit Realm legends associate beings descending from the sky rift with the Outer Gods’ return. Salgon claims some long-lived inhabitants have been awaiting that return 8 48.

Bounties and Currency

• Spirit Coins are offered as bounty rewards and are also carried by the evil-spirit couple encountered by Lin En 8 13.
• Blood-Character Bounty Writs curse a target through their blood, making them visible to all grotesque creatures in the Spirit Realm. The curse lasts until the target dies or the bounty expires 13.
• Hana Ye’s bounty requires her body to be preserved and her soul imprisoned. Its reward rises from 5,000 to 50,000 Spirit Coins, a tenfold increase in one day 13 39.
