Background / History

The Valkyrie did not personally experience the ancient war against the Outer Gods. According to her account, their invasion lasted more than a thousand years and tore an enormous rift between the Warp and reality. She believes the invaders were ultimately annihilated, but their defeat came at a terrible cost 3.

Before her ascension, Seven Nights remained trapped in Eternal Night, with civilization reduced to a dark age after the invasion. She entered the rift and became the blazing sun that restored light to the world. Maintaining the seal kept her there for the following thousand years, separated from ordinary life in Seven Nights 3.

Appearance

The Valkyrie appears as a tall, silver-haired woman surrounded by dazzling light. Lin En first sees her seated cross-legged deep within the sun 1.

• Hair: Waist-length, likened to pure white smoke 1.
• Eyes: Crystal-like 1.
• Body: Translucent when encountered inside the sun; pale arms and long legs 1.
• Expression: An icy face and cold gaze, even while restrained and furious 1 2.

Personality

The Valkyrie is proud, guarded, and uncompromising toward beings she considers unholy. She attacks Lin En despite his attempts to identify himself as human, calls him an “unholy abomination,” and refuses to permit an evil creature of the Warp to enter Seven Nights 1 3.

Captivity does not immediately break her defiance: she demands a direct fight, threatens retaliation, and initially refuses to answer questions. Her responsibility to the sun gives Lin En leverage, however. She eventually accepts a bargain and promises to leave him alone if he releases her and stays away 1 2 3.

Holy Flame

Holy Flame is identified as the power the Valkyrie possessed before becoming the sun and is considered a top-tier Divine Sequence 37.

• Salgon’s account presents her single-sequence specialization as the basis of her extraordinary power 50.
• Her example inspired the legend that gathering eighty-one identical sequences offers a path to godhood. Salgon knows of no successful reproduction of her achievement 50.

Solar Manifestation and Rift Sealing

The Valkyrie became a blazing sun to seal the great rift and illuminate Seven Nights 3.

• Her sun radiates intense light and heat that appear capable of dispelling surrounding filth and evil 1.
• She must return to it periodically to replenish her strength; prolonged absence causes a substantial decline in power 1 3.
• The sun requires her maintenance. During her imprisonment, Hana Ye notices that it has become smaller and no longer feels warm on her skin 24.

Combat Techniques

The Valkyrie repeatedly cuts Lin En apart during their ten-year conflict, sometimes reducing him to more than a dozen pieces with one slash 1.

• Learns his usual routes and begins intercepting him in an effort to study and subdue him 1.
• Releases scorching light while attempting to dissolve his restraints 1.
• Uses varied methods against him, including psychic attacks according to Lin En’s later account 35.
• Cannot overcome the black-mist chains once separation from the sun has weakened her sufficiently 1.

Sacred Blessings

Objects associated with the Valkyrie carry solar or purifying power 9 18.

• Consecrated images: Her Church-issued holy portraits are imbued with the sun’s power and regarded as protection against evil spirits. Hana Ye’s portrait nevertheless fails to stop Lin En 9.
• Holy Water: Jones states that water blessed by the Valkyrie exposes and burns evil entities, while strengthening and purifying ordinary humans 18.
• Known exception: Lin En drinks the Holy Water without injury because of his accumulated fire resistance, leading Jones to mistake him for a pure human 18.

Relationships

• Lin En — Enemy and captor. She spends ten years repeatedly killing him without preventing his revival. He eventually exploits her dependence on the sun to imprison her and harvest the emotional fragments produced by her anger 1 2 3.
• Hana Ye — Devotee. Hana relies on her holy portrait for protection, admires her role in ending Eternal Night, and fears punishment from her after realizing she is helping a suspected Great Demon 9 15 22.
• The Church — Religious institution that venerates her, distributes consecrated portraits, and uses Holy Water blessed by her 9 15 18.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Capture and Interrogation

After studying her habits for ten years, Lin En provokes the Valkyrie into approaching his black mist, expands it around her, and traps her inside. He waits roughly another dozen hours for her strength to decline before binding and gagging her 1.

Lin En discovers that her anger supplies emotional fragments he can consume. He then demands information about the Warp and Seven Nights, using her need to return to the sun and a heat-radiating branding iron taken from it as leverage. Once she answers, he breaks his promise of release and leaves her imprisoned as a continuing food source 2 3.

Consequences in Seven Nights

With the Valkyrie unable to guard the entrance, Lin En passes the sun and reaches the rift into Seven Nights. There, he discovers that the woman he has captured is worshipped as humanity’s savior and defaces her holy portrait in Hana Ye’s home 4 9.

Her absence subsequently affects the sun itself. After returning to the Warp, Lin En still keeps her confined; Salgon’s account of her sequence specialization prompts him to reassess how powerful his prisoner is 24 49 50.
