Background / History

Cruno was once a gifted Nightwalker who traveled widely with his squad. He remembers his younger self as brash and confident, believing that he might eventually become a Nightwalker captain. His captain, Oswald Lewis, brought him into the Goddess of the Night Church and became both his mentor and a father figure 68 69.

A disastrous incident left Cruno and Clint Cooper as their squad’s only survivors. Cruno lost a substantial portion of his soul, while Clint survived with a ruined body. Their captain died saving them. Afterward, Cruno became Lane Village’s missionary to guard the captain’s grave, while Clint served as its gravekeeper 68 69 82 95.

For twenty-one years, Cruno maintained the village church, recited scriptures, answered believers’ questions, and introduced newcomers to the Goddess’s faith. He never found this routine tedious, regarding his life as service to his deity 11.

Appearance

  • Meticulous grooming: Straightens his collar and sleeves before leaving the church, holding himself to exacting standards because he represents the Goddess of the Night Church 11.
  • Missionary robes: His clothing has less red scrollwork than a bishop’s robes 14.
  • Moon-shaped accessory: Wears a silver Crescent Moon pendant around his wrist and wraps it around his hand when activating it 11 13.

Personality

Cruno is devout and conscientious, but his faith does not make him indiscriminately hostile toward independent Extraordinaries. He expects the Church to cooperate with those who do not abuse their powers. He also respects legal restraints: despite suspecting Adele Stewart of murder, he refuses to arrest her without evidence 20 69.

He is patient when recruiting Bruce Wayne, recognizing his hesitation and avoiding pressure. As an investigator, he distinguishes evidence from speculation, considering several possible Extraordinary identities rather than treating his first theory as certain 16 67 68.

His composure breaks when Clint dies and his captain’s body is stolen. He blames himself, weeps at the cemetery, and vows revenge. Although he initially reins in his grief to investigate the wider threat, recovering the body eventually becomes important enough for him to prepare his resignation despite warnings that Bradley is stronger than him 77 95.

Abilities & Skills

Night Watcher Powers

Cruno possesses the Goddess of the Night’s powers as a Night Watcher 12.

  • Moves swiftly through darkness and conceals his presence while conducting surveillance 11 69.
  • Navigates with his eyes closed, using his power rather than ordinary sight 11.
  • Detects powerful supernatural presences and locates their source 11 12.
  • Quietens Wayne Manor’s guard dogs with an invisible force 12.
  • Recognizes Mondreton’s dream environment and closes his eyes to perceive reality through his own power; Daniel ultimately dispels the dream 14.

Spirituality Shield

Cruno channels Spirituality Power into a defensive barrier woven from silver threads 13.

  • Blocks attacks from Mondreton’s summoned avatar 12 13.
  • Requires sustained Spirituality Power; repeated blows crack the shield while draining Cruno faster than he can recover 13.
  • Cannot reliably protect him once Mondreton bypasses his crescent blade and closes in on his heart 13.

Supernatural Investigation

Cruno combines knowledge of Church records with examination of spiritual and physical evidence 13 55 77.

  • Records Mondreton’s Beyonder Characteristic, enabling the Church to track later uses of his powers through a specialized supernatural item 14 15.
  • Identifies ghost traces, missing soul activity, fragrance, and lipstick residue when examining McCauley’s corpse 67 68.
  • Reconstructs the cemetery attack from decay, displaced soil, corpses, arrow wounds, and marks on a tree 77.
  • Anticipates Archer’s repeated ambush tactic when rotting corpses appear during the woodland operation 84.
  • Recognizes that a Hunter can disguise Beyonder Characteristics, making recorded signatures unreliable 77.

Limitations and Soul Damage

  • Cruno acknowledges that he is not particularly powerful compared with other Night Watchers; Mondreton’s avatar alone nearly overwhelms him 13.
  • Paul describes his ability to live normally after losing most of his soul as remarkable 82.
  • Bradley defeats him in direct combat, leaving him bleeding from his mouth and nose 85.
  • Paul warns that recovering his missing soul would require entering Sleeping Hell, the Eternal Frost Glacier, where souls can freeze to death. No recovery is documented 95.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Crescent Moon pendant — An artisan-forged Beyonder weapon acquired through Cruno’s own chance opportunity, rather than supplied by the Church. Activation produces silver chains and a mobile crescent-shaped blade; he also uses the pendant to send an urgent call for reinforcements 11 13 15.
  • Silver Moon Pendant / Bracelet — Names used for his moon-themed weapon in later battles. It deflects Archer’s arrows, but Bradley knocks it aside during Cruno’s attack 84 85.
  • Short spike — Used to pierce a rotting corpse’s skull during the woodland pursuit 84.

Relationships

  • Goddess of the Night — His deity and the source of his Night Watcher powers. He dedicates his missionary life to her service 11 12.
  • Oswald Lewis / Oswid — His former captain, mentor, and father figure. Cruno visits his grave annually and later vows to recover his stolen body; the captain is called Oswald Lewis at the graveside and Oswid in subsequent accounts 69 77 95.
  • Clint Cooper — Fellow survivor of his former squad and a close friend. Clint’s death leaves Cruno grief-stricken and convinced that he failed to protect him 69 77 82.
  • Daniel Pacino — Bishop and immediate superior. Daniel saves him from Mondreton and later pulls him back from Archer’s lethal Boundary Arrow 14 92.
  • Paul Targett — An old acquaintance whose squad’s missions once overlapped with Cruno’s. Paul offers assistance and warns him against pursuing Bradley without sufficient strength 82 95.
  • Francis Morton — Fellow Church investigator and combatant. They investigate Bruce’s Extraordinary status and fight together against Bradley; Francis initially hesitates to hand over the soul guide for Cruno’s pursuit 16 66 85 92.
  • Bruce Wayne — Prospective recruit whose unusual blessing prompts Cruno’s interest. Cruno uncovers his divine ancestry and reports him to the Nightfall Association, helping bring about his eventual acceptance of a Nightwalker invitation 16 65 66 94.
  • Cameron Mistvale — An independent Extraordinary whom Cruno regards as powerful. Cameron warns him that a suspected Death God Believer may target his captain’s corpse 68.
  • Bradley Sharon — Enemy responsible for Clint’s death and the theft of the captain’s body. Cruno’s determination to capture him becomes a personal mission 85 95.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Mondreton’s Summoning

  • While investigating the Flekent couple’s curse, Cruno senses a powerful summoned presence and rushes to Wayne Manor after requesting reinforcements 11.
  • He confronts Mondreton, who controls Jessica Wayne’s body. His shield and pendant prove insufficient, and Daniel intervenes to save him 12 13 14.
  • Cruno sends Mondreton’s recorded characteristic toward the central church in Forendana, then returns to question Bruce and reassure his household 15 16.
  • Mondreton’s case is later transferred to the Night Watchers in Sokvinia, freeing Cruno to concentrate on the Gargoyle investigation 55.

Discovery of the Wayne Bloodline

  • Bruce declines Cruno’s initial invitation to join the Night Watchers, disappointing him without ending his interest 20.
  • Zatanna Mistvale’s attention to Bruce leads Cruno to connect the Goddess’s blessing, Daniel’s praise, and Jessica’s possession with a possible family bloodline 55.
  • Research in Forendana reveals the Wayne Family’s descent from both the Goddess of the Night and Eris. He also learns of the Sacred Scarab’s revival of Bruce as a new family progenitor 65.
  • After discovering that Bruce has already become an Extraordinary, Cruno writes to Morati Gale of the Nightfall Association. His report brings Paul Targett to investigate Bruce 66 82.

Adele and the Cemetery Attack

  • Cruno’s investigation of McCauley’s death identifies Adele Stewart as a suspect. He warns Clint about a possible threat to the captain’s grave before following her to Bruce’s party 67 68 69 70.
  • He moves to intervene when Adele attacks Bruce, but Bruce subdues her first. Cruno takes her into Church custody, trusting the other Night Watchers to handle the battle to the north 71 72.
  • News arrives that Clint, Leye, and Sel are dead. At the cemetery, Cruno finds his captain’s empty coffin and reconstructs an attack involving at least two hostile Extraordinaries 76 77.

Pursuit of Bradley and Archer

  • Cruno joins the woodland operation, counters Archer’s ambush, and enters his escape tunnel before returning to confront Bradley 84 85.
  • Bradley overpowers him. A later pursuit also fails when Archer’s Boundary Arrow creates a flaming barrier; Daniel prevents Cruno from charging into it 85 92.
  • After the escape, Cruno prepares a resignation letter so he can find Bradley and recover his captain’s body. Paul warns that he is no match for Bradley in his current condition 95.
