Background / History
Absanik and the Great Flood
Fawcett grew up and became an Extraordinary in Absanik. A supernatural flood appeared above the town, carrying blood and human brain fluid; those submerged went mad and their bodies dissolved. His family and friends died in the disaster. Fawcett suppressed his own madness and begged the Lord of the Dead for protection, saving his soul but not his body 104 109.
Hundreds of years later, he remained determined to discover the flood’s cause. He believed someone had deliberately created it and wanted to give the dead an answer, even if the perpetrator was already gone 109.
Jessica and Wayne Manor
Jessica summoned Fawcett and made him into a Vengeful Spirit Doll. He participated in her attempt to murder Bruce, later identifying the bathroom curse as his only attack on him. Fawcett claimed Jessica had enslaved him and forced him to act; Bruce initially had no way to verify that account. Fawcett later acknowledged their curse’s role in killing the Flekent couple 7 18 78.
After the failed attack, Fawcett offered Bruce supernatural instruction in exchange for access to a powerful object forming inside Wayne Manor. Ghost identified it as the Dark Bible. Unable to touch the book himself, Fawcett sought its information instead, hoping to obtain a living body before his deteriorating doll fell apart 18 19 20.
He taught Bruce the basics of Extraordinary identities, advancement, and potion use. Once Bruce recovered the Dark Bible, he discovered reincarnation spells that could fulfill Fawcett’s request, but needed to become a Wizard to cast them. Fawcett waited for Bruce’s preparations and helped guard the study and the book 21 26 32 45 53.
Reincarnation in Walkervis
In Walkervis, Bruce and Fawcett witnessed a ritual that left six young people dead with frozen souls. Fawcett accepted the black-haired boy’s body after confirming it contained spirituality, despite the likelihood of a Night Watcher investigation. Bruce completed the reincarnation while destroying wandering ghosts attracted to the available body 103.
The boy was Sebas Jones, a gifted language student at Rosen University. His frozen soul fragments allowed Fawcett to inspect his memories without merging with them. Fawcett also recognized an aptitude inherent in Sebas’s body that made it particularly suitable for becoming a Translator 104.
To conceal the possession, Fawcett posed as the ritual’s sole survivor and handed Julius’s notebook to the Church. He mixed truth with a fabricated explanation of his survival, claiming sufficient spirituality had protected him. Bruce secured permission to supervise him, although the Church required him to remain in Walkervis 105 107 108.
Julius and the Castro Family
Bruce financed enough ingredients for three batches of Translator potion. After successfully becoming a Translator, Fawcett discovered that Julius’s notebook protected a soul within its cover. He also deciphered the ritual’s true purpose: it requested disaster and death, rather than the descent of an ancient god. Despite fearing retaliation from the Castro Family, he shared the discoveries with Bruce 110 114 115.
When Bishop Ernest warned that the Castro Family might unleash the demon Terror, Fawcett volunteered to help Bruce break the notebook’s soul-protection spell. His real intention was to keep both of them away from the coming battle. During their experiments, he recognized divinity in Bruce’s Divine Might and confirmed that the ability could affect Julius’s protected soul 121 123 124.
Fawcett later supplied a map to Julius’s Forest Cottage but declined to accompany Bruce to Chelberly, remaining under Church supervision. After Bruce returned, he translated nine pages of Julius’s ciphered manuscripts, revealing six combat spells and a spell for cultivating humans into magic creatures 131 132 133 151.
Appearance
- Doll body: Ugly, short-armed, and badly deteriorated; rolling his eyes nearly dislodged them, forcing him to catch them by hand 18 19 31.
- Human body: Sebas Jones’s black-haired, teenage appearance 103 108.
- Physical condition: The reincarnated body was frail, and becoming a Translator did not significantly improve its physique 123.
Personality
Fawcett is proud of his former Secret Prayer identity and enjoys explaining supernatural knowledge. Nevertheless, he treats that knowledge as bargaining power, initially withholding potion formulas until Bruce fulfills their agreement. He admits that his understanding of identities other than Secret Prayer is limited 18 19 20 21.
His overriding priority is survival. Having already died once, he refuses to risk his second life in a battle against a demon. He also distrusts gods and rejects submitting to them, although he has sought divine assistance when necessary 20 33 103 104 121.
His concern for Bruce extends beyond their original transaction: he worries when Bruce returns smelling of human blood, tries to protect him from the Walkervis battle, and panics after Bruce is struck by lightning. By contrast, he feels no obligation toward Sebas’s family relationships. His deepest unresolved attachment is to Absanik and the people lost in its flood 45 108 109 121 127.
Abilities & Skills
Secret Prayer Knowledge and Divine Appeals
Fawcett retains knowledge from an identity whose defining practice is praying to hidden powers 102.
- Explains Extraordinary identities, advancement, divine bloodlines, and the dangers of invoking gods’ names 19 21 31.
- Possesses several potion formulas, including the Believer formula he gives Bruce 20 33.
- Obtains temporary sight from the God of Justice to check a prospective body’s spirituality 103.
- Limit: As a spirit no longer holding the Secret Prayer identity, most gods refuse his requests; the successful prayer leaves him exhausted 103.
- Path restriction: He believes the underworld’s dark aura makes Secret Prayer unsuitable after reincarnation 101.
Translator
His Translator identity allows him to comprehend meanings conveyed through writing, languages, images, and concealed forms of expression 104 114.
- Understands magic glyphs without being a Wizard or having studied magic 114.
- Deciphers the soul-protection spell and the true meaning of Julius’s ritual 114 115.
- Perceives Bruce’s divinity and the effect of Divine Might on Julius’s soul 124.
- Translates Julius’s ciphered magical manuscripts 151.
- Limits: Translator provides no combat capabilities. Newly understood dangerous information can provoke severe pain and fever 104 115.
Curses
Fawcett used curses while bound to Jessica 18 78.
- Cast the bathroom curse intended to kill Bruce 18.
- Recognized that their curse had killed the Flekent couple, while questioning why people with the Wayne Family’s ancestry had been so vulnerable 78.
- Limit: He considers his own curse power limited 78.
Memory Inspection and Impersonation
Sebas’s frozen soul fragments give Fawcett access to memories that ordinary reincarnation would not supply 104.
- Views the original owner’s memories without absorbing them into his own identity 104.
- Uses those memories to construct a plausible account for the Night Watchers 105 107.
- Convincingly performs fear, grief, and tearful dependence while posing as Sebas; Bruce compares his acting to that of an opera performer 107 108.
Relationships
- Bruce Wayne — Initially a murder target, then a student, bargaining partner, and companion. Bruce provides his new body and potion ingredients; Fawcett supplies instruction, translations, and protective advice 18 103 110 121 151.
- Jessica — His summoner and, according to Fawcett, enslaver. She used him in curses and the plot against Bruce 7 18.
- Ghost — A distrustful fellow resident of Wayne Manor. They compete over the Dark Bible, but Fawcett later suggests seeking the Lord of the Dead’s protection for Ghost 18 20 78.
- Sebas Jones — The deceased student whose body Fawcett occupies. Sebas’s physical aptitude enables Fawcett’s Translator path 103 104.
- Lord of the Dead — Preserved Fawcett’s soul during Absanik’s destruction after he prayed for protection 104.
- Bishop Ernest — Oversees the investigation of “Sebas” and entrusts Bruce and Fawcett with work on Julius’s protected soul 107 108 121 133.
- Julius and the Castro Family — Adversaries whose secrets Fawcett exposes through translation, accepting the risk of retaliation 115 116.
