Background / History
Raising Ruri
Mei Ling married Hizashi Hyuga and became the mother of Neji. After Ruri’s parents died on the battlefield, she and Hizashi raised him and cared for his daily needs. Although Ruri continued to address her as his aunt, she came to regard him as her own child 7 85 681.
During Ruri’s early training and Academy years, Mei Ling regularly invited him to meals, checked on his studies and friendships, and bought him clothing. When Hizashi left on missions, she often stayed at Ruri’s house with Neji; Ruri also stayed at her home to keep her company 13 33 56.
Naruto’s Birth
On the day Naruto was born, Mei Ling left Neji in Ruri’s care and firmly instructed both children to remain indoors. She later returned with Hizashi, who explained that they had been on a mission connected to the Fourth Hokage’s wife giving birth and the danger of the Nine-Tails escaping its seal 70 73.
Ruri’s Anbu Service and Front-Line Deployment
After Ruri graduated from the Academy and chose to join the Anbu, Mei Ling brought food and daily necessities prepared with Hizashi. Their conversation became an emotional acknowledgment of their family bond, and she invited him to a family meal before he reported for duty 85.
She was overjoyed by Ruri’s exceptional promotion to Jonin and went shopping for a celebration. When he subsequently decided to visit the front lines, partly to see where his parents had died, she accepted his decision but embraced him and urged him to return alive. During his absence, she worried intensely and explicitly described him as their child 116 118 169.
Sharing the Burden at Home
Mei Ling’s household work and care for Neji sometimes left her exhausted. Ruri massaged her shoulders and back until she fell asleep, covered her with a blanket, and watched Neji while she rested for nearly three hours. Afterward, she agreed to rest when necessary and take better care of herself 282 283.
As Ruri grew more attentive to her well-being, he increasingly helped with meals, dishes, and childcare. Hizashi later proposed taking missions within the village to spend more time with the family, a prospect Mei Ling welcomed. She also encouraged Ruri to choose local work rather than missions far from home 215 222 291 891 961.

Personality
Mei Ling is openly affectionate and protective. She habitually pinches Ruri’s cheeks, worries when he appears thinner, and immediately checks him for injuries after learning about a spar. Her pride in his achievements does not lessen her concern for his safety on missions 13 65 116 281.
Her devotion can lead her to neglect her own rest. Even while tired, she insists on preparing meals and buying supplies for Ruri’s deployments. She nevertheless accepts his concern and promises to look after her health 283 291 301 302.
She also enjoys teasing her family. She jokes about Ruri’s interest in Harukawa, playfully insists that Ruri and Hizashi finish an enormous meal, and reminds them that doing the dishes occasionally hardly compares with her daily workload 891 908 923.
