Power Progression
Jiaoxin's Merfolk ranks are distinguished from human professional orders: her ninth rank corresponds to the human eighth order, while the tenth rank corresponds to the human ninth tier 287 322.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Sixth rank at birth | 170 | Born at this level despite having never cultivated seriously during her early life. |
| Eighth rank; early seventh-order human equivalent | 181 405 | Her strength is compared to an early seventh-rank archmage when she leaves Skyfang Moon. She later recalls taking almost 200 years to reach this stage. |
| Eighth rank, preparing to enter its late stage | 284 | Yang Tian invites her to join his cultivation arrangements, hoping she can reach the eighth-rank peak and then break through. |
| Mid ninth rank | 287 | Advances during three months of secluded cultivation; explicitly compared to an eighth-order, fifth-level professional. |
| Late ninth rank, close to the peak | 322 324 | Absorbs energy from the Sun-Moon Divine Snail's sacrifice. Her strength becomes comparable to an eighth-order, seventh- or eighth-level Saint Magister. |
| Ninth-rank peak | 345 | After a year supervising her companions' cultivation, she approaches 100,000 spiritual power and joins the expedition to Imperial Dragon Pass. |
- Projected advancement: Yang Tian prepares elixirs to help her reach the tenth rank, but the supplied passages do not confirm that breakthrough 369 390.
Background / History
Jiaoxin grew up with her grandmother and four older sisters in Skyfang Moon. Her grandmother maintained a barrier that prevented the younger Merfolk from leaving. Doted on by her family, Jiaoxin spent much of her early life eating, sleeping, swimming, and playing rather than deliberately cultivating 169 170 174.
Her grandmother considered her the most gifted Merfolk descendant in ten million years and selected her as her successor. Sending Jiaoxin into the human world was intended to broaden her experience before she eventually returned to help her people 169.
Yang Tian entered her life by falling from the sky and accidentally taking her first kiss. Her grandmother invoked the ancestral rule that “one kiss binds you for life” and required them to marry. Jiaoxin initially preferred a sham marriage that would let her explore the outside world, provided Yang Tian promised to bring her home whenever she wished 169 173 416.
Their wedding included a magical red cord linking them across distance. Although they completed the ceremony, Yang Tian respected their agreement: he did not drink the wedding wine and used blood from his own palm to create the appearance of a consummated wedding night. Jiaoxin then left Skyfang Moon with him 178 179 180.
Appearance
- Hair and eyes: Blue hair and clear blue eyes 181.
- Human form: A petite girl appearing roughly twelve or thirteen, often dressed in white during her early appearances 170 205.
- Merfolk form: A fish tail covered in nine-colored scales, revealed when she lowers her feet into water 213.
- Distinguishing traits: Cool skin, delicate features, and a beauty associated with the gentleness of water 188 226 285.
- Slow aging: Several years pass without an obvious change in her appearance; she still looks only a few years older than the seven- or eight-year-old Vasha 345 415.
Personality
Jiaoxin begins as a sheltered, mischievous girl who wants delicious food and new experiences. She plays tricks on nearly everyone around her and deliberately draws Yang Tian into the rivalry with her suitors, Dajin and Xiaojin. Her innocence does not prevent her from learning quickly once she enters human society 170 171 173 203.
Living with Yang Tian makes her more confident, considerate, and emotionally attached. She enjoys being acknowledged as the commander's wife, takes responsibility for their home, and develops an affection for its animals and other residents. Separation also introduces her to loneliness: tending the garden and buying food become small comforts while she waits for him 211 213 226 369.
Her loyalty extends beyond her husband. At Imperial Dragon Pass, she refuses to abandon her teammates even when they urge her to escape. Later, despite her pain over Yang Tian's relationship with Wasu, she accepts that Vasha is innocent and welcomes the child into their household 346 415 416.
Abilities & Skills
Water and Ice Magic
- Wields water magic at a level substantially beyond Lan Ruyu's early abilities, finishing a peak eighth-rank demon beast with Water Moon Flowing Brilliance 181.
- Uses ice magic to freeze the Dark Swamp and clear its poisonous fog. With Water Moon's assistance, the frozen area approaches a thousand meters 305.
- Uses mist to clean the manor after Yang Tian removes the accumulated dust 285.
- Inherits magical techniques from her grandmother, which she begins testing after reaching the ninth rank 300.
Moon Wheel and Azure Water Moon
- Moon Wheel: Creates a silver moon that blocks the Demon Vulture King's approach and foul odor, then repels it hundreds of meters 325.
- Azure Water Moon: A Forbidden Curse-level water spell that kills the ninth-rank-peak Demon Vulture King while Yating restrains it 325.
- Limit: Casting the Forbidden Curse leaves Jiaoxin breathless and heavily depleted. Yang Tian explains that she can perform it below the human ninth tier only with her Spirit Artifact's help 325.
Healing Magic
- Treats Yang Tian's numb arm after he holds her through the night without using spiritual power to support himself 333 334.
Borrowed Thought Power
- Learns to borrow a small portion of Yang Tian's Thought Power rather than independently possessing his full ability 211.
- Uses it to rescue Big Yellow from Li Ang's grasp, float tea to visitors, and clean the house 211 285.
Merfolk Physiology and Transformation
- Can take human form and grow legs after coming ashore and dispersing the moisture around herself 170.
- Returns to a nine-colored fish-tailed form in water and swims freely in the household pond 213.
- Possesses exceptional longevity and potential; her strength can improve through eating without deliberate cultivation 284.
- Initially cannot fly under her own power. Yang Tian can temporarily supply energy for flight, but warns that it is dangerous and limited 209.
- Later appears stepping through the air when approaching Yang Tian and Vasha; the passage does not explain the method 415.
Face-Changing Art
- Offers to change Yang Tian's appearance into that of a handsome Merfolk male.
- Does not perform the technique because he refuses to abandon the face inherited from his parents 179.
Tears and Tear Pearls
- Merfolk tears condense into valuable Tear Pearls. Jiaoxin uses the plant Purple Umbrella to induce tears for garment-making 244.
- Her tears also become pearls during her heartbreak over Yang Tian's daughter 333.
- Later gives Yang Tian a golden teardrop. After he swallows it, he experiences her feelings and their hearts become connected 406.
Gardening and Needlework
- Tends flowers, vegetables, fruit trees, medicinal herbs, and spirit fruits at their home 213 226.
- Sews Yang Tian's Dragon Garment, carefully concealing Tear Pearls within its stitches 244 245.
- Cooking is less successful: sputtering oil frightens her while she attempts to fry tofu 227.

- Includes fruits that improve potential without greatly increasing spiritual power.

Story Role / Major Arcs
Entering the Human World
After leaving Skyfang Moon, Jiaoxin accompanies Yang Tian through Death Canyon, shares her rare fruits with his companions, and identifies a way to help Little Nian recover. Yang Tian subsequently introduces her to his grandmother as his wife 181 188.
In the Holy City, she imagines bringing her people out of Skyfang Moon to live in a lively human settlement. She and Yang Tian establish a home with gardens, a pond, and animals, but his frequent missions make her increasingly unwilling to remain behind 205 211 213 226.
Demon Hunts and the Dark Swamp
Jiaoxin joins Yang Tian's squad in battle at Demon-Exorcism Pass. Seeing the Demon God Emperor's overwhelming strength gives her greater sympathy for humanity and diminishes her lingering resentment over human treatment of the Merfolk 233 239.
During the Dark Swamp expedition, she clears poisonous terrain, discovers thirty-two sawfish eggs in an underwater nest, absorbs the Sun-Moon Divine Snail's energy, and kills the Demon Vulture King with Azure Water Moon 305 312 322 325.
Discovering Yang Tian's Daughter
Jiaoxin notices Vasha's resemblance to Yang Tian and asks him directly about their connection. He explains that the girl is his daughter with Wasu and describes having fallen into Wasu's trap. Jiaoxin is deeply hurt, but continues to trust his character and postpones resolving the conflict rather than demanding that he abandon the child 333 334.
Imperial Dragon Pass
While Yang Tian cultivates separately, Jiaoxin supervises the squad's training and then accompanies its five newly eighth-order members to Imperial Dragon Pass. When Demon Gods surround them, she shields her companions with the Starsea Pendant and refuses their pleas to flee. Their defense eventually fails, leaving her spiritual power exhausted 345 346 347.
Later Family Life
Jiaoxin and Yang Tian's relationship deepens over nearly ten years after her departure from home. She eventually welcomes Vasha without blaming her for her parents' circumstances, and openly accepts the prospect of Wasu joining the household. When Yang Tian leaves for the Holy Demon Sea, Jiaoxin remains with his grandmother in the Holy City 404 406 415 416.
