Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Established top-tier swordsman and Devil Fruit user | 4 5 45 | Already wields Oto and Kogarashi, projects large flying slashes, possesses Conqueror’s Haki, and uses the Float-Float Fruit to transport ships and attack with islands. |
| Life Return: Golden Lion Descends | 152 | Acquires Oran Island’s Life Return techniques through Lind. His ultimate technique lets him overwhelm an Admiral-level knight, forcing the World Government to assign another fighter to assist her. |
| Approaching Overlord | 235 236 | Training, Two-Sword Style, and coordinated fruit attacks allow him to contend with Roger. Both are described as one step away from Overlord. |
| Overlord; Float-Float Fruit awakening | 237 | Breaks through while rescuing his fleet from the Edd War storm. His awakened fruit calms the tempest, while his Conqueror’s Haki reaches Overlord and surpasses Roger’s at that time. |
| Overlord upon rebirth — dream world only | 256 | Within his coma experience, returns to the period after God Valley with memories of two lives. His fruit and Conqueror’s Haki immediately reach Overlord. |
| Mid Overlord Conqueror’s Haki; Overlord Armament and Observation Haki; Supreme Great Swordsman — dream world only | 257 | Develops these abilities over more than twenty years. His swordsmanship advances under the pressure of an encirclement by nearly ten government and Marine experts. |
| Mid Overlord overall; dream-world skills recovered in reality | 258 265 | After awakening, adapts his accumulated experience to his younger body while fighting Roger. Overlord Armament Haki, Observation Haki, and swordsmanship manifest; Lind subsequently confirms Supreme Great Swordsman status and Overlord proficiency in all three Haki types. |
Appearance
Shiki has long golden hair that flows down his back and billows like a cape when he flies 5 235.
- After Marineford: His body is extensively bandaged, and his eyes appear vacant during his prolonged unresponsive state 242.
- After Impel Down: He has lost both legs and travels with Judge to obtain mechanical replacements 370.
Personality
Shiki is theatrical, competitive, and openly boastful. He commissions a heroic entrance verse from Lind, plans his return to Hachinosu around it, and later recites it while attacking Marineford. His appetite for spectacle can distract him even during a rescue operation: Reinhardt has to remind him to free Hoover and Marshall while he is enjoying his fight with Garp and Sengoku 5 45 240.
His recklessness is tempered by experience rather than eliminated. Repeated ambushes teach him to avoid encirclement, and he withdraws to meet Rocks instead of confronting Saturn’s approaching forces alone. A stalemate with Sengoku also makes him recognize that inheriting Rocks’s position requires alliances and schemes, not merely strength 150 182.
Despite forcibly recruiting pirates, Shiki can inspire genuine loyalty. During the Edd War storm, he abandons his pursuit of Roger to rescue his fleet, earning the survivors’ gratitude. He remains intensely resistant to surrender, including when facing Imu’s overwhelming superiority in the dream world 235 237 257.
His renewed strength after the coma briefly feeds his overconfidence, but he can adjust when a tactic fails. Against Garp and Pande Lia, he abandons an unfavorable contest of physical strength and switches to mobile, ranged attacks. After escaping Impel Down, however, the combined loss of his legs, life force, and future potential largely extinguishes his former drive 344 370.
Abilities & Skills
Float-Float Fruit
Shiki’s central ability provides flight, fleet transportation, terrain manipulation, and large-scale ranged attacks 45 89 238.
- Fleet transportation: After awakening, carries hundreds of ships across several thousand kilometers in a few hours. His carrying capacity exceeds the Oran Empire’s contemporary aircraft, and his later flight speed surpasses its fighter aircraft 238 333.
- Island manipulation: Drops islands onto Marineford, remodels its terrain during combat, and reshapes another island to fit Oran Island’s coastline 45 89.
- Elemental constructs: Creates attacking lions from earth, seawater, and clouds. Awakening allows him to substitute enormous seawater lions for transported islands 235 240 342.
- Storm suppression: Calms the Edd War tempest after awakening, but cannot generate equivalent storms himself 237 240.
- Mobile warfare: Combines flight, terrain constructs, and sword slashes to attack while remaining difficult to reach 344 348.
- Limits: Sustained multitasking consumes considerable stamina and mental energy. Coordinated opponents can break through his constructs and force close combat 240 345.
Haki
Shiki eventually reaches Overlord proficiency in all three Haki types, with Conqueror’s Haki remaining his strongest specialty 257 265.
- Conqueror’s Haki: Incapacitates ordinary Marines and clashes with other leading pirates’ Haki strongly enough to transform the surrounding sky 45 235.
- Conqueror’s Coating: Wraps Oto and Kogarashi in Conqueror’s Haki, allowing him to fight Garp and Sengoku together after his first Overlord breakthrough 240.
- Armament Haki: Reinforces his defenses, swords, and the compressed stone sphere of Planetary Devastation 85 345.
- Observation Haki: Reaches Overlord during the dream-world experience and manifests at that level again after his return 257 258.
- Later confirmed levels: Displays mid Overlord Conqueror’s Haki and early Overlord Armament Haki against Whitebeard, Garp, and Pande Lia 342 345.
Swordsmanship
Shiki practices a ferocious Two-Sword Style with Oto and Kogarashi, supplementing close combat with repeated flying slashes. His post-coma swordsmanship reaches Supreme Great Swordsman 4 235 265.
- Flying Slash: Launches a slash dozens of meters long during his first documented fight with Lind 4.
- Lion: Thousand-Cut Valley: Releases successive powerful slashes; also uses them to wear down Pande Lia’s Sword of Promised Victory 182 342 344.
- Lion King: Sovereign: Meets Roger’s Divine Departure in a direct, Haki-charged sword clash 235.
- Lion: Lion King Slash: A Conqueror’s-coated attack used against Garp and Sengoku at Marineford 240.
- Ten Thousand Swords Become One: Merges multiple flying slashes into one enormous strike. Shiki develops it from Zhang Liang’s Ten Thousand Swords Return to the Origin 342.
Life Return: Golden Lion Descends
An ultimate Life Return technique obtained through Shiki’s access to Oran Island’s publicly available methods 152.
- Produces a golden aura and the apparent phantom of a golden lion behind him 152.
- Raises his combat performance enough to put an Admiral-level opponent in repeated mortal danger 152.
- Acquiring it forms part of his sustained investment in Lind’s strength-enhancing techniques and products 152.
Large-Scale Techniques
| Technique | Function and documented use |
|---|---|
| Earth-Roll / Lion’s Might: Earth Roll | Shapes earth into defenses or attacking lions. Used to shield against ambushes, free Hoover and Marshall from the execution platform, and oppose Whitebeard’s shockwaves 45 85 240 342. |
| Lion King: Ruling the Sea | Creates numerous lion heads from seawater and clouds, which attack alongside Shiki’s sword assault 235. |
| Cloud-Roll / Sky-Roll | Produces enormous constructs used to attack or drive back surrounding Marine experts 240 241. |
| Sky Domain | Unleashes his awakened fruit across Marineford, bringing the island under his control and lifting it into the air 240 241. |
| Planetary Devastation | Forms an exceptionally dense stone sphere reinforced with Armament Haki. Smashes Garp and Pande Lia into the Red Line and leaves an enormous crater 345. |
| Super Planetary Devastation | Encases Uranus in a vast stone sphere and crashes it into New Marineford, nearly scrapping the weapon and destroying its mobility 363. |
- Planetary Devastation’s limitations: Its destructive force is spread over a broad area, making it difficult to kill a true Overlord outright. Garp and Pande Lia nearly break the sphere before impact, forcing Shiki to stabilize it with his fruit 346.
Leadership and Training
Shiki builds large fleets through worldwide recruitment and later takes a direct role in developing North Blue’s elite troops 142 310.
- Expands his organization into thirteen squads during the influx of pirates into the New World 192.
- Tests the first Stellar Squad reserves with a ten-minute Conqueror’s Haki endurance assessment 310.
- Provides systematic combat instruction, sparring, and physical conditioning before taking the reserves to the East Blue for field experience 310.
- Uses his mobility to collect allied commanders, transport armies, and rapidly concentrate reinforcements 161 213 333.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Oto and Kogarashi — His paired Great Grade Swords, used for Two-Sword Style, flying slashes, and Haki-coated attacks 4 345.
- Flying Fleet — An airborne pirate armada carried by his fruit. It numbers hundreds of ships after Edd War, but suffers catastrophic losses at Marineford 238 240.
- Angel’s Heart — Lind’s restorative medicine; allows Shiki to return to battle after the government’s three-man ambush at Marineford 45.
- Power-enhancing potions — Uses a potion at Marineford to restore and exceed his remaining stamina. Later recognizes that repeated use has consumed his life force and possibly his potential for further advancement 240 364.
- Recovery Potions — Uses them during the battle against Uranus 363.
- Last Afterglow — Supplies Saro with the Oran Empire’s medicine, restoring the elderly pirate’s youth and combat strength temporarily 319.
- Mechanical legs — Arranged by Judge after Shiki’s escape from Impel Down; Shiki travels to Germa to have them fitted 370.
Relationships
- Lind — Close friend, supplier, and political ally. Writes Shiki’s signature verse, provides access to Life Return techniques and medicines, arranges covert support, and pledges the Oran Empire’s participation in North Blue’s war 5 152 239 359.
- Rocks — Former captain and predecessor as the pirate faction’s standard-bearer. Protects Shiki during the Marineford raid and later uses him as transport for the assassination of Golden Wolf 45 150 242.
- Roger — Rival whom Shiki repeatedly seeks to recruit as his vice-captain. Their relationship includes a non-aggression agreement, the Edd War battle, and a post-coma duel; Shiki regards him as an important opponent across his three experienced lives 230 236 258.
- Whitebeard — Former colleague, military ally, and sparring opponent. Reinforces Shiki against the Marines and later acknowledges the strength of his post-coma Haki 181 342.
- Charlotte Linlin — Former colleague and intermittent ally. Guards Shiki’s base during his early Marineford raid, but later fights halfheartedly in North Blue to avoid helping him gain too much power 46 213.
- Reinhardt — Senior subordinate and intended imperial Grand Fleet Admiral. Preserves Shiki’s territory during his coma and is assigned a leading military position in the planned Sky Empire 258 275.
- Adolf — Political partner whom Shiki recruits with an offer of authority over North Blue and its Parliament. Helps organize the later federation and accompanies him after his prison escape 272 275 359 370.
- Darren — Political and military partner. Appointed prime minister of the Sky Empire’s Military Affairs Institute and later prime minister of the North Blue Federation; assists Shiki in restraining Uranus 275 359 363.
- Mihawk and Crocodile — Talented but initially defiant youngsters whom Shiki forcibly keeps at his side. Later assist him with the Stellar Squad trainees 274 310.
- Fisher Tiger — Leads the Fish-Man squad that rescues Shiki after Marineford and brings him to Oran Island 242.
- John, Silver Axe, and Ochoku — Former Rocks comrades who visit him after Marineford. Their mockery coexists with admiration for his resolve and belief that he best carries on Rocks’s will 242.
- Judge — Arranges prosthetic legs after Shiki’s escape and accompanies him in the search for Germa 370.
- Imu — Overwhelming enemy encountered during Shiki’s dream-world assault on Mary Geoise. The encounter exposes the limits of Shiki’s confidence in his own strength 257.
History
Service under Rocks
Shiki first encounters Lind as an opponent, drawing Oto and Kogarashi against Lind’s remotely controlled Kunpeng Sword. He subsequently offers Lind a deputy-command position, which Lind declines in favor of pursuing greater independence within the Rocks Pirates. During their journey to Hachinosu, Shiki persuades him to write a signature verse and uses it for a spectacular, Conqueror’s Haki-backed return 4 5.
While Lind fights the Marines elsewhere, Shiki raids the undermanned Marineford with his Flying Fleet and several islands. Zero, Blade, and Griffin Lylett ambush and severely injure him, but Rocks intervenes, kills Zero, and brings reinforcements. Shiki returns to his feet with Angel’s Heart, and the pirates eventually withdraw together 45 46.
Rocks assigns Shiki and Lind to defend the New World’s entrance. Shiki later supports the fighting on Oran Island, where Garp, Red Tiger, and Golden Wolf leave him seriously injured in another coordinated attack. After the battle, he helps Lind expand Oran Island by reshaping and joining the battlefield island to its coast 70 85 89.
As conflict escalates, Shiki gathers followers worldwide. He withdraws to Leni Island to rendezvous with Rocks, transports his captain for the assassination of Golden Wolf, and demonstrates Golden Lion Descends in the ensuing fighting. Before the God Valley campaign, he collects troops from the division commanders’ territories and transports them to the assembly 142 150 152 161.
Inheriting Rocks’s Cause
After Rocks’s death, Shiki publicly renews the Dragon-Slaying Order. He adds one hundred million Beli to each of the first ten qualifying bounties and ten million to each of the first hundred. The broadcast prompts attacks on Celestial Dragons worldwide and makes him a principal target of the World Government 180 181.
With support from Zhang Liang, Whitebeard, and Kozuki Oden, Shiki attacks G-3 Base. His clashes with Sengoku reveal that he cannot reproduce Rocks’s dominance through brute force alone. He turns toward broader recruitment and alliances, eventually fielding thirteen squads against Sengoku’s five leading officers 181 182 192.
Expansion into North Blue
When the great pirates divide their expansion targets, Shiki claims the North Blue and begins taking over kingdoms that have declared independence from the World Government. Warned by Lind that the Elders are approaching, he gathers Whitebeard, Charlotte Linlin, and Kaido for the decisive fighting at Maidan Island. Subsequent reports credit his alliance with repelling the Navy and incorporating one-third of North Blue into the Sky Empire 205 213 216.
Shiki later hosts Roger, Rayleigh, and Zhu Feng for cooperation talks. Roger refuses to join an alliance, but the meeting produces a secret non-aggression agreement 230.
Edd War and the Destruction of Marineford
Frustrated by other pirates’ Overlord breakthroughs, Shiki continues training and expanding his fleet. He surrounds Roger at Edd War and attempts to force him into becoming his vice-captain. Their battle ends when a vast storm threatens both crews 234 235 236 237.
Shiki prioritizes rescuing his followers over chasing Roger. Trapped in the storm himself, he awakens the Float-Float Fruit and reaches Overlord, gaining the ability to calm the tempest. He returns to Flying Sky Island with the survivors to restore morale and prepare for further conflict 237 238.
On August 28, Sea Circle Calendar Year 1493, Shiki attacks Marineford to rescue Hoover and Marshall. Although he frees them and initially holds his own against Garp and Sengoku, concealed cannons and coordinated Marine attacks devastate his fleet. Fewer than a fifth of his pirates remain fighting, and half of his thirteen division commanders are dead or have surrendered 240.
Shiki drinks a potion and unleashes Sky Domain, lifting Marineford despite the assembled officers’ attacks. He destroys the headquarters but falls into the sea. Fisher Tiger’s squad secretly rescues him and delivers him to Oran Island, where he remains vacant and unresponsive while the Marines reclaim his North Blue holdings and Germa abandons him 241 242 364.
The Coma and Three Experienced Lives
During his coma, Shiki experiences a world resembling reality but without Lind. He first watches another version of himself suffer defeat at Edd War, imprisonment, the loss of both legs, and eventual defeat by a Straw Hat Boy. After that life ends, he is reborn within the dream shortly after God Valley, retaining the strength and memories of two lives 256.
In this second dream life, Shiki reaches Overlord immediately, forms a Pirate Alliance, and eventually builds forces greater than Rocks’s. Early failures against the World Government teach him the importance of resources, training, and sustained development. Nevertheless, his relentless wars bring widespread suffering that he largely disregards in pursuit of victory 256.
After more than twenty years of training, he attacks Mary Geoise to investigate the power Lind fears and test whether death will return him to reality. Imu defeats him with ease. Shiki endures a lethal attack while collapsing the Red Line to create an escape route for his followers, then loses consciousness and awakens in a chaotic space 257.
Back in reality after over a year of unresponsiveness, Shiki challenges Roger. Their duel helps him adapt his dream-world experience to his younger body and recover his advanced Haki and swordsmanship 258 265.
Rebuilding His Political and Military Base
Shiki tries to recruit Adolf by promising him administration of North Blue and its Parliament. Darren subsequently joins the planned Sky Empire and receives the post of prime minister of its Military Affairs Institute. Their discussions emphasize a stable political base, retention of Parliament, and recruitment through political parties 272 275.
Shiki also searches for promising followers, keeping Mihawk and Crocodile close despite their resistance. He later trains the first Stellar Squad reserves and takes them to the East Blue for combat experience 274 310.
During this period, he defeats Whitebeard in a spar and accepts Garp and Pande Lia’s joint challenge. After switching from direct clashes to mobile bombardment, he overwhelms them with Planetary Devastation. The four Overlords then cooperate to break a passage through the weakened Red Line 342 344 345.
World War, Imprisonment, and Disbandment
A photograph exposing Shiki’s cooperation with Darren precipitates open conflict with the World Government. Adolf and Darren help unite North Blue into a federation, raise a million-strong army, purge the Navy, and establish Shiki as president. Shiki secures support from Lind and other major powers while persuading several senior Marines to remain neutral during the war’s opening stages 359.
At Mary Geoise, Darren restrains Uranus while Shiki uses Super Planetary Devastation to drive it into New Marineford. The impact devastates the headquarters, breaks the Red Line, and causes disasters across a large part of the world. Uranus loses its mobility, but the battle does not end in the pirates’ victory 363.
Weakened by repeated potion use, Shiki believes his remaining lifespan and chances of further advancement have been severely reduced. He and Roger subsequently resist Uranus for only a little over ten minutes before being captured and restrained with Seastone Handcuffs. Shiki is imprisoned in Impel Down 364 365 367.
In Sea Circle Calendar Year 1500, Shiki escapes, having lost both legs. Despite having enough escaped pirates available to rebuild a formidable crew, he disbands the Flying Pirates and parts from his loyal followers. He then travels with Judge and Adolf to Maidan Island, learns Germa’s location, and heads there to obtain prosthetic legs 370.
