Sasuke initially presents himself as cold, proud, and intensely competitive. As the top-ranked rookie, he answers Neji’s challenge without backing down and confidently promises to defeat Rock Lee within five minutes. He also undervalues taijutsu, assuming ninjutsu and his Sharingan should be the foundations of a ninja’s strength 175 176.

His pursuit of power begins as a means of avenging his family. Naruto’s rapid improvement leaves him envious, but the narration explicitly distinguishes that jealousy from hostility toward Naruto himself. Repeated defeats and encounters with stronger fighters force him to recognize his own limitations 169 177 183 184.

Learning Itachi’s true intentions replaces his hatred with grief, guilt, and confusion. Naruto and Sakura help him express those feelings rather than withdraw into despair. History

Family Tragedy and Revenge

Sasuke is the son of Fugaku and Mikoto Uchiha and the younger brother of Itachi. As a child, he frequently asked Itachi to teach him shuriken throwing. Their relationship was shattered when Itachi killed their parents and the other members of the clan, then deliberately encouraged Sasuke to hate him 200 240 242.

Sasuke subsequently lived for revenge. By the Chunin Ninja Exams, he was considered the top rookie and the only Uchiha remaining in the village, attracting attention from older students and spectators 167 175 216.

Chunin Ninja Exams

Sasuke first encounters Su Yu at Naruto’s home and objects to an outsider joining Team 7’s meeting with Kakashi. Su Yu silently appears behind him and releases an oppressive presence that leaves him unable to move even with his Sharingan active. Watching Su Yu overwhelm Kakashi afterward makes Sasuke increasingly conscious of his need for strength 166 168 169.

Before the exams, Rock Lee decisively defeats him with taijutsu. Naruto intervenes before Lee’s final blow, then defeats Lee in one second. Sasuke is shaken both by his own loss and by Naruto’s extraordinary improvement after only five days of training 176 177.

In the Forest of Death, Sasuke exposes Orochimaru’s Naruto disguise but is immobilized by the intruder’s killing intent. Naruto repeatedly protects the team and prevents Orochimaru from branding Sasuke with the Cursed Seal. Orochimaru’s offer of power fails to persuade him because Sasuke has just watched Naruto beat him 182 185 186.

Team 7 obtains an Earth Scroll and reaches the central tower as the fourth team. In the preliminaries, Sasuke overcomes Yoroi’s chakra absorption and wins after Gekko Hayate intercepts his finishing fireball. He then asks Naruto for an introduction so that he can request training from Su Yu 187 194 195.

Learning the Truth About Itachi

When Sasuke admits that he wants power for revenge, Su Yu reveals his knowledge of the massacre and recreates its circumstances through illusions. Sasuke sees his parents accept Itachi’s choice and hears Itachi ask Hiruzen to guarantee his safety. Su Yu also explains Itachi’s failing health and suggests that his cruelty was intended to give Sasuke a reason to live and eventually inherit his eyes 199 200.

The revelations nearly overwhelm Sasuke. Naruto confronts him, punches him, and insists that he stop fleeing his feelings; Sakura assures him that he still has his teammates and teacher. Sasuke finally breaks down and apologizes to Itachi, then accepts Naruto’s offered hand 201.

His immediate goal changes from revenge to becoming strong enough to meet Itachi and decide what to do afterward. Su Yu agrees to train him 202.

Special Training and the Konoha Invasion

During the following month, Sasuke improves his physique, develops three tomoe in both eyes, learns Chidori, and awakens the Mangekyō Sharingan. Su Yu uses illusions rather than real deaths to induce the necessary emotional stimulus and then removes the eyes’ destructive side effects 208 210 211.

Against Gaara in the finals, Sasuke displays overwhelming speed, damages his Sand Armor, and pierces his sand shell with Chidori. When the invasion interrupts the match, he uses Amaterasu against Gaara’s group before Su Yu redirects him to support Hiruzen with Sakura and Kakashi. His attempt to pierce the surrounding barrier with Chidori Sharp Spear fails 216 217 218 221 222.

Reunion with Itachi

Su Yu transports Sasuke and his companions to Itachi after sensing his return to Konoha. Rather than attack, Sasuke tells his brother that he already knows the truth and demonstrates his Mangekyō Sharingan 240 241.

Sasuke asks Itachi to return, but Itachi refuses on the grounds that he is a rogue ninja. Before leaving, Itachi acknowledges Sasuke’s growth and the importance of Naruto and Sakura to him. Sasuke is happy to have seen his brother, although he regrets not asking about his health 242.

War Against the Akatsuki

After encountering enemies such as Ginshi whom he cannot keep up with, Sasuke receives further training from Su Yu as war approaches. He learns Sage Mode alongside Naruto and Sakura 245 313 314 317.

On the battlefield, Sasuke confronts the Third Raikage, protects allied troops from Yagura’s Tailed Beast Bombs, and fights Madara’s Wood Clones with Susanoo. Despite these advances, Madara’s larger Susanoo leaves the group struggling to evade its attacks 332 333 335 344.

The Demonic Statue of the Outer Path later captures Team 7. Might Guy knocks it off balance, allowing Sasuke to free Naruto and Sakura, but Sasuke cannot stop the subsequent extraction of Kurama from Naruto. He and Sakura call for Su Yu, who arrives and restores Naruto before the group witnesses the Ten-Tails’ emergence 351 352.
