Background / History
Kaido once sailed under Rocks D. Zebek alongside Whitebeard, BIG MOM, and Golden Lion Shiki. Nearly forty years before the current events, Garp and Gol D. Roger intercepted Rocks’s attack on the Celestial Dragons, and the Rocks Pirates were annihilated. Despite their shared past, Kaido and Whitebeard remained little more than nodding acquaintances 38.
Kaido later used Wano’s shogun, Kurozumi Orochi, to wipe out the Kozuki Family and establish Wano as his base. Its defensible terrain, abundant resources, and advanced Seastone-working techniques suited his rule. He also restricted information and public discourse to discourage interest in the outside world 25.
His earlier exploits included defeating Gecko Moria and killing every member of Moria’s crew except Moria himself. Kaido also repeatedly courted death, including jumping from a Sky Island and attacking Marine Headquarters alone. During the latter incident, Sengoku, Garp, and the three Admirals fought him together, but his recovery outlasted their attacks; he eventually fell asleep surrounded by Marines 25 36 39.
Appearance
Kaido’s human form is enormous and heavily muscular, with an oppressive presence likened to an iron fortress 24.
- Height: Nearly five meters tall while seated; over seven meters tall in human form 24 31.
- Head: Long, dinosaur-like horns and dragon-like whiskers extending from his lips 24.
- Markings: Dragon-scale tattoos on his left arm and an X-shaped scar across his right abdomen 24.
- Clothing: Introduced with his upper body bare 24.
- Azure Dragon Form: An azure dragon over one hundred meters long, with two pairs of horns, a mane, flowing whiskers, scales, claws, and sharp teeth 25 29.
- Dragon-Human Form: Blue-green scales cover his arms; his hands resemble dragon claws, while his head gains a protruding jaw, dense scales, and dragon horns 32.
- Contract mark: A small tattoo on his chest, formed from Su Yu’s binding contract 35.
Personality
Kaido loves drinking, fighting, and war. He prefers direct physical combat in which every punch connects, finding the fighting styles of Whitebeard, BIG MOM, and Red-Haired unsatisfying for different reasons. Even after Su Yu’s first devastating attack, he responds with excitement rather than retreat 25 31 32.
Though quick-tempered and openly domineering, Kaido is also calculating. He recognizes that Doflamingo is trying to use him against Su Yu, but accepts the opportunity to find a strong opponent and postpones retaliation. His takeover and information control in Wano likewise demonstrate deliberate strategy rather than simple brute force 25.
His apparent desire to die is less absolute than his reputation suggests. After losing to Su Yu, he reflects that his repeated brushes with death may have been a thrilling game, and that he still possesses an instinct to survive. He accepts an undeniable defeat, but the prospect of becoming Su Yu’s permanent punching bag frightens him 34.
Abilities & Skills
Mythical Zoan Transformations
The Fish-Fish Fruit’s Azure Dragon Form gives Kaido three forms suited to different kinds of combat 26 33.
| Form | Capabilities |
|---|---|
| Human | Receives the Zoan fruit’s basic improvements to strength, recovery, stamina, and speed 33. |
| Azure Dragon | Provides the greatest strength and the dragon’s special abilities; allows flight through the clouds 25 26 33. |
| Dragon-Human | Greatly increases defense, recovery, strength, and speed while retaining a largely humanoid body; described as the most suitable form for one-on-one combat 33. |
- His dragon flight is fast enough that the Marine surveillance team cannot keep up 26.
- His hybrid-form speed approaches Red-Haired’s, though it remains below Kizaru’s 33.
- Increasing his body’s size and weight through transformation lets him regain balance during Su Yu’s repeated kicks 32.
Durability, Stamina, and Recovery
Kaido’s exceptional constitution and awakened Zoan abilities make him extraordinarily difficult to kill 31.
- Survives Su Yu’s Shattered Mirror, which breaks his scales, horns, and claws, followed by a fall of over one hundred meters 31.
- Rapidly heals wounds and restores damaged limbs after returning to human form 31.
- Normally possesses enough stamina to fight for more than ten days straight 33.
- Limit: Healing severe injuries consumes substantial stamina and does not prevent exhaustion or lingering internal pain 31 33.
- Limit: His “immortality” is not absolute; Kizaru judges that Su Yu could have killed him without showing mercy 36.
Haki
Kaido uses all three demonstrated types of Haki 25 30 32.
- Conqueror’s Haki: Disperses clouds, overwhelms his Den Den Mushi, and knocks civilians and weaker pirates unconscious. He also coats attacks with it 25 32 33.
- Armament Haki: Reinforces his body, protects vital organs, strengthens weapons and fists, and can coat the ground before he slams an opponent into it 31 32 33 40.
- Observation Haki: Warns him of Su Yu’s approaching spatial attack 30.
- Limit: His Observation Haki cannot detect Su Yu’s presence, leaving him unable to track Su Yu during their close-range exchange 32.
Dragon Breath and Wind Blades
Kaido can release large-scale attacks from his mouth 29 30.
- Dragon Breath: A beam of searing energy capable of obliterating Red Tree No. 13 and destroying Dressrosa’s royal palace 29 40.
- Can increase the beam’s power or fire it at close range while restraining an opponent 30 33.
- Wind blades: Releases a torrent of sharp blades, each described as rivaling a Great Swordsman’s slash 30.
- Limit: Su Yu blocks Dragon Breath with one palm; forcing Kaido’s mouth shut during discharge makes the blast explode inside it 30 34.
Thunder Bagua
Kaido’s signature attack combines tremendous speed with Armament and Conqueror’s Haki 32.
- Normally delivered with his spiked club, Hassaikai 32.
- Can be adapted into a fist strike after the club is destroyed 33.
- Limit: Su Yu stops the club version with one finger and catches the fist version without effort 32 33.
Vajra Arrow
Vajra Arrow is a ranged attack produced by coating his club with Haki and swinging it to release destructive energy 33.
- After losing Hassaikai, Kaido substitutes his fists to launch a less destructive version 33.
- A stray fist-energy blast severely injures a distant pirate spectator 33.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Hassaikai — A spiked club forged entirely from refined iron and tempered with Kaido’s Armament Haki over many years. Su Yu crushes it during their fight 32.
- Den Den Mushi — Used to receive Doflamingo’s call; faints under Kaido’s Conqueror’s Haki 25.
- Sake jug — An enormous drinking vessel heavy enough to leave a crater when set down. Kaido later smashes it before departing for Sabaody 25.
Relationships
- Su Yu — Defeats Kaido decisively, spares his life, and forces him into a protective contract 34 35.
- Miland — Kaido must not harm him and must assist when Miland cannot handle threats to the bar 35.
- Doflamingo — Business partner supplying Artificial Devil Fruits. Kaido punishes him for directing him toward Su Yu but keeps him alive because his technology remains useful 25 35 40.
- Kurozumi Orochi — Wano’s shogun, whom Kaido used to eliminate the Kozuki Family and secure the country 25.
- Rocks D. Zebek — Former captain 38.
- Whitebeard — Former crewmate and later opponent; their shared service did not make them close 32 38.
- BIG MOM and Golden Lion Shiki — Former crewmates aboard Rocks’s ship 38.
- Gecko Moria — Defeated challenger whose crew Kaido exterminated 39.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Journey to the Wish-Granting Bar
After Su Yu humiliates Doflamingo, Doflamingo tells Kaido about a bar at Mangrove No. 13 that claims to grant any wish. Kaido sees through the attempt to manipulate him, but goes anyway in search of an enjoyable fight and a possible means of dying 23 24 25.
His departure triggers Marine surveillance reports, Kizaru’s deployment, and a month-long prohibition on Celestial Dragon visits to Sabaody. After three or four days of travel, Kaido arrives above Red Tree No. 13 and demands that Su Yu come out 26 27 28.
Defeat at Sabaody
Kaido opens the confrontation by destroying Red Tree No. 13 with Dragon Breath, though no one is killed. Su Yu meets him in the sky, blocks another blast, and uses Shattered Mirror to grievously injure him 29 30 31.
Kaido recovers and continues with Thunder Bagua, hybrid transformation, ranged fist attacks, and a point-blank Dragon Breath. None harms Su Yu. The final attempt ends when Su Yu’s clone uppercuts him, forcing the breath to explode inside his mouth. Kaido abandons resistance and admits defeat 32 33 34.
Binding Contract
Su Yu spares Kaido to secure protection for Miland after his own eventual departure. When Kaido hesitates, Su Yu takes control of his hand and makes him sign with a bloody fingerprint; the parchment becomes a tattoo on his chest 34 35.
| Contract provision | Effect |
|---|---|
| Protect the bar’s interests | Kaido nominally belongs to the Wish-Granting Bar and cannot act against its interests 35. |
| Protect Miland and property | He cannot harm Miland or damage the bar’s property 35. |
| Provide assistance | He must intervene when Miland cannot handle someone causing trouble 35. |
| Penalty for breach | Su Yu warns that disobedience will cause unbearable pain 35. |
| Freedom outside these duties | Kaido may leave and remain governor of the Beasts Pirates 35. |
Public Fallout and Retaliation
Morgans places Kaido’s defeat on the newspaper’s front page, spreading the news worldwide. The Marines and Five Elders reassess Su Yu’s strength, while Whitebeard recognizes that even his prime self could not have beaten Kaido so easily. Kaido remains a feared Emperor; the public instead places Su Yu above the Four Emperors as the “White Emperor” 36 37 38 40.
Before returning to his base, Kaido visits Dressrosa, destroys the royal palace, and overwhelms Doflamingo’s defenses. He grabs Doflamingo by a leg and slams him face-first into the ground more than a dozen times, then leaves without explanation. He does not kill him, consistent with both Su Yu’s warning and his continued need for Artificial Devil Fruits 35 40.
