Background / History
Susie is Audrey Hall’s golden retriever and has already taken a Beyonder potion when Edward first enters the Hall villa. She attacks him while he is interrogating a maid, repeatedly recovers from his Stunning Spells, and returns to her normal form after he transforms her into a flowerpot. Tracking the concealed intruder, she bites his trouser leg and locks her forelegs around his leg. Edward eventually runs outside dragging her, prompting the maids to shout that Audrey’s dog has been kidnapped 1.
Susie later recognizes that Edward, despite looking like Audrey through Polyjuice Potion, is an impostor. Worried about Audrey’s survival, she confronts him and asks him to release her. Their conversation is interrupted by Edward’s return to Hogwarts; when he comes back to Backlund, Susie resumes the confrontation. She remains suspicious until Audrey emerges from his leather pouch and confirms that he is her friend 3 9.
After their reconciliation, Susie helps Edward evade the Beyonders watching the villa. She gradually extends her ordinary roaming route, then carries his pouch beneath her neck bow to a deserted alley in Cherwood Borough. She subsequently guides him to Audrey at a ball, watches over the sleeping maid Annie, delivers £1,000 from Audrey, and relays news when Audrey is confined at home 10 12 14 24.
When Edward brings his cat Lilith to Backlund, Susie welcomes her enthusiastically and shares dried chicken with her. Although Lilith initially fears the much larger dog, Susie restrains herself from chasing her. The following morning, Susie immediately asks Edward whether Lilith has come along again 39 40.
Appearance
- Large build: Described as an enormous or giant golden retriever 1.
- Golden coat: Her fur is exceptionally smooth, which Edward compares to silk 1.
- Expressive face and posture: Displays recognizably human worry, hesitation, fear, and affection; her tail often reveals her mood 3 9 39.
- Neck bow: Wears a silk bow during the operation to carry Edward out of the villa 10.
Personality
Susie is fiercely protective of Audrey. She challenges an intruder despite his magic, notices that Audrey has been replaced, and fears that her companion may have been killed. Even after verbally accepting Edward’s explanation, she keeps her muscles tense and watches his movements until Audrey’s safety is confirmed 1 3 9.
Her quiet, observant manner coexists with playful canine habits. She sits unobtrusively in the shadows, yet also chases butterflies, naps in sunny grass, enjoys dried chicken, and eagerly seeks a playmate in Lilith. She is capable of tactical bluffing: when Edward reveals his wand during their standoff, she retreats into an innocent “just a dog” act 9 10 21 39.
Abilities & Skills
Spirit Vision and Scent Recognition
Susie combines her sense of smell with Spirit Vision to investigate concealed or unfamiliar people.
- Detects Edward beneath a Disillusionment Charm after smelling a stranger and activating Spirit Vision; the charm is not automatically visible to a Sequence 9 Spectator 11.
- Recognizes Edward as an impostor despite his Audrey disguise 3 6.
- Confirms Audrey’s familiar scent after her return and notices Lilith’s new scent in the room 9 39.
- Scouts for nearby Beyonders. Her initial report distinguishes the villa itself from more distant areas she has not checked 9 10.
Resistance to Wizarding Magic
Her resistance makes ordinary wizarding spells less reliable against her than Edward expects.
- Recovers rapidly from Stunning Spells and returns to normal after being transfigured into a flowerpot 1.
- Forces Edward to cast another seven or eight Stunning Spells and a Leg-Locker Curse during his escape 1.
- Is resistant, not immune: Stunning Spells do temporarily knock her unconscious 1.
- Her performance convinces Edward that wizarding magic alone will not keep him safe in the Beyonder world 6.
Speech and Observation
Susie speaks by making the air vibrate and can communicate in Loenese 3 9 14.
- Deduces that Edward’s earlier spellcasting required his wand and attempts to confront him when she believes he lacks it 9.
- Observes quietly enough that Audrey and Edward forget she is present during their discussion of the future 21.
- Follows instructions to patrol and silently count to one hundred before returning 39.
Covert Assistance
- Uses ordinary dog behavior to conceal her movements from the villa’s watchers 10.
- Opens doors and manipulates the leather pouch with her mouth and paws 9 10.
- Uses barks to signal Edward and lead him to Audrey 12.
- Carries money and verbal messages between Audrey and Edward 14 24.
Equipment / Items
- Silk neck bow — Conceals the leather pouch during Edward’s escape 10.
- Leather pouch, temporarily carried — Holds Edward while Susie transports him from Empress Borough to Cherwood Borough 10.
- Dried chicken — A recurring reward from Edward; she later shares a piece with Lilith 10 14 24 39.
Relationships
- Audrey Hall — Owner and closest companion. Audrey considers Susie sufficient as her pet even when offered other choices, trusts her with surveillance and messages, and reassures Lilith that she is kind and well-behaved 6 9 39.
- Edward — Initially an intruder and suspected kidnapper; later an ally whom Susie helps escape and keeps in contact with Audrey. He regularly rewards her assistance with dried chicken 1 9 10 14 24.
- Lilith — Edward’s cat and Susie’s eagerly welcomed prospective playmate. Susie initially asks whether Lilith is a pet obtained for her, offers food, and looks forward to further visits 39 40.
Notable Quotes
“How is she? Is she still safe? Could you let her go?” 3
“Of course, no problem. No one will suspect me. After all, I’m just a dog.” 10
Trivia
- Edward privately identifies her as the “future Dog of Imagination” during their first encounter. This is his expectation, not a rank or advancement she achieves in the documented chapters 1.
- When asked about Susie’s future, Edward tells her she will remain Audrey’s “best partner and her greatest helper,” delighting her 21.
