Background / History
Life in Backlund
Audrey is Earl Hall’s daughter and Hibbert Hall’s younger sister. Raised with private tutors rather than attending school, she longs to experience ordinary school life. By the time Edward meets her, she has joined the Tarot Club, become a Spectator, and learned that her dog Susie has also taken a potion 6 10 36.
Accidental Journey to Hogwarts
Edward enters Audrey’s bedroom while fleeing the Hall household. Although she believes his claim that he wandered into the villa accidentally and offers to ask her father to release him, he instead uses her hair and clothing to impersonate her with Polyjuice Potion. He hides her in his enchanted pouch, damages the bedroom to stage the intruder’s escape, and is carried away by Earl Hall under the mistaken belief that he is Audrey 2.
When Edward returns to Hogwarts, Audrey travels with him inside the pouch. Once he explains that they are in another world, she chooses to explore and learn magic rather than remain hidden. Dumbledore accepts her enrollment despite her age and lack of a traceable local background 3 4 5.
Before she begins school life, Audrey and Edward make an Unbreakable Vow witnessed by Dumbledore. She promises not to disclose Edward’s secret or the existence of another world without his consent, while Edward promises not to hurt her and to bring her home 5.
Returning Home and Supporting Edward
Audrey returns to Backlund with her wand, books, and sweets. She reassures Susie that Edward is her friend and helps arrange his escape from the guarded villa: Susie carries him away inside the enchanted pouch. Audrey also supplies her father with a deliberately inaccurate portrait, ending the Church of Evernight’s questioning without identifying Edward 9 10 12.
She introduces Edward to Viscount Glaint and accompanies him to Mr. A’s Beyonder gathering, where she buys three pages of Roselle’s diary. Edward later interprets them for her, revealing information about compatible pathway changes and the dangers of switching incorrectly 12 14.
After Edward joins the Tarot Club as The Tower, Audrey openly acknowledges their shared membership and teaches him the acting method. She subsequently requests the Telepathist formula, which Derrick offers to obtain; by Chapter 30, she is still missing a Rainbow Lizard Dragon’s pituitary gland and has written to her brother for help 18 19 28 30.
First Beyonder Investigation
Audrey and Edward accept Alger’s commission to locate the pirate Qilingus in Backlund. Edward tells her that Qilingus will target Duke Negan and asks her to notify him if she receives a ball invitation 19 23.
Their investigation of 32 Wilde Street becomes Audrey’s first direct involvement in a Beyonder incident outside the Tarot Club. She destroys a dead thief controlled by a wraith, then burns the wraith itself to nothing with Dragon Breath after Edward reveals its form. They recover a Brown Notebook containing potion formulas and Fourth Epoch information 23.
Hogwarts School Life and Modern Travel
On her next visit, Audrey explores modern London and persuades Edward to accompany her on the Hogwarts Express so she can experience the first-years’ traditional arrival. She is subsequently sorted into Slytherin, despite initially having been given Gryffindor lodging 6 31 32 33.
Audrey repeatedly punishes Draco Malfoy’s insults with spells. When he, Crabbe, and Goyle ambush her, she activates her wand’s dragon abilities and frightens them into submission. Edward later finds the three running errands for her 34 35.
She also accompanies Edward to Knockturn Alley, where he escapes an ambush with her through Apparition, and travels with him to Japan. In Akihabara, she discovers anime, games, electronics, and new uses for visual art. Back at Hogwarts, she resumes her studies and begins mastering Transfiguration 36 38.
After returning to Backlund, Audrey retains a Vanishing Cabinet for contacting Edward. She continues helping him with money, information, and goods from the other world, but finds Backlund’s restrictions harder to tolerate after experiencing Hogwarts’ freedom 39 40 43.
Appearance
- Hair: Long, silky golden hair, usually falling over her shoulders or down her back 2 38.
- Eyes: Clear emerald-green eyes 2.
- Bearing: Elegant and recognizably aristocratic; her manner leads Slytherin students to speculate that she belongs to an ancient hidden wizarding family 2 33.
- Clothing: Initially wears long dresses; later adopts Hogwarts robes and casual modern clothes, including a light-colored sweatshirt and jeans 2 23 38.
- Dragon manifestation: Her wand’s abilities can produce faint golden scales, golden slit pupils, and scarlet flames around her mouth. She cannot control these visible changes when using the abilities 23 35.
Personality
Audrey’s curiosity frequently overtakes her fear. During Edward’s intrusion, she becomes fascinated by his spells, transformation, and expanded pouch; after arriving at Hogwarts, she immediately wants to explore and learn magic. Modern London and Akihabara similarly prompt a stream of questions about technology, culture, and art 2 4 32 38.
She is generous and protective toward Edward, offering financial assistance, concealing his identity, and lending him her powerful wand whenever he needs it. Her trust does not prevent her from questioning him: she challenges his unexplained immunity to corruption and the suspicious coincidence surrounding his acquisition of the Master Key 10 14 18 21 43.
Away from Backlund’s expectations, Audrey becomes more playful and outspoken. She teases Edward about being younger than her and enjoys school life, but her mischief can go too far: a fabricated warning that newcomers must survive the Killing Curse leaves several first-years crying and Audrey deeply embarrassed 9 33 37.
Learning about the approaching apocalypse gives her a concrete reason to seek strength. She tells the Sorting Hat that she wants to grow powerful quickly enough to face it 21 33.
