Background / History

Childhood and Inherited Debt

Denji’s mother died from a heart condition that caused her to cough up blood. His father abused him while drunk, eventually forcing Denji to kill him in self-defense. His father’s creditors disguised the death as suicide by hanging so they could keep Denji available to repay the debt. Denji subsequently suppressed the memory of killing his father 1 2.

By twelve, Denji owed tens of millions of yen and lived in a tiny, dilapidated house on a hillside. He had never attended school or celebrated a birthday, and worked out his age by counting from his birth year. The local yakuza boss demanded ¥700,000 by the following day, threatening to dismember and sell him if he failed 1 2.

Kotone’s Intervention

Asaba Kotone approached Denji at his father’s grave, falsely claiming that a relative who knew Denji’s mother had asked him to help. He promised to care for Denji, then hunted a devil to earn money for food. Denji initially asked for only a single slice of cheap bread; Kotone instead bought him udon and grilled skewers 2 5 6.

Denji warned Kotone about the approaching debt collector and urged him to leave rather than become involved. When Kotone went out that night, Denji assumed he would never return. Kotone came back after dealing with the Zombie Devil and told him that his creditors had been zombified and killed, leaving him free of the debt 6 9.

Kotone rented a two-bedroom apartment and bought Denji clothing, furniture, food, and television games. A hot bath, snacks, a comfortable bed, and games fulfilled wishes Denji had previously considered out of reach 9.

First School Enrollment

Kotone enrolled Denji in a nearby middle school despite his lack of elementary education. The prospect of making friends and meeting girls quickly convinced Denji to attend. Before leaving to pursue other matters, Kotone gave him a phone and money, and placed Kamui coordinates on him so he could teleport to his location 10 11.

Denji called shortly afterward, claiming he wanted to test the phone when he really wanted to speak with Kotone. He reported that his teachers were patient and hoped to get along with his classmates. Kotone continued visiting him, playing games with him, and replenishing his living expenses 17 60.

Heart Disease and the Experimental Base

After returning from the Soviet Union, Kotone learned that Denji had been coughing up blood. Denji believed he had inherited his mother’s heart disease but had concealed it to avoid worrying him. A Tokyo hospital diagnosed late-stage congenital heart disease and prescribed medication to prolong his life 74 75.

Kotone sought a Devil Heart transplant as a permanent solution. He rejected forcing Pochita to merge with Denji, since the two had neither a contract nor a close relationship in this timeline. After hearing that becoming a Weapon Human would involve sharing his body with a devil’s consciousness and gaining blood-dependent revival, Denji enthusiastically agreed 75 109.

At the Soviet Union’s underground Experimental Base, Denji received the number 44 and chose a double room, becoming Elena’s roommate. He persuaded the Sword Devil to cooperate by offering his blood, eliminating the need for Kotone’s proposed use of Genjutsu to force a fusion. The scientists arranged regular visits to strengthen their compatibility 110 111.

During his stay, Denji befriended Elena, exchanged secretly obtained lollipops for Russian lessons, and openly told her that she was cute. He later worried about whether her own Devil Heart experiment could kill her, accepting Kotone’s assurance that he could keep both of them safe 111 112 169.

Return to Tokyo and Public Safety

Denji’s experiment succeeded, and Kotone taught him to transform into a Sword Weapon Human and back. After Elena completed her Whip Devil fusion, Denji chose to return to Tokyo and asked whether she could accompany them. Elena agreed 171 174 175.

Both resumed school at Sakuradai High School. Denji chose a college preparatory class, and Elena selected the same class; Principal Yoshimura admitted them as first-year Class 3 transfer students 176.

Kotone then arranged their admission to Public Safety by having them demonstrate their Weapon Human forms to Kirisū Yuki. They joined the Special Division for Devil Affairs under Kotone, whose duties focused on elite devils throughout Tokyo. Denji began practical training against the Sausage Devil 179 180 181 182.

At school, Denji attracted attention by proving he was a Public Safety Devil Hunter. When girls offered to tutor him, Elena intervened and later agreed to be his girlfriend “in name” to discourage them. Denji announced their relationship to the class, while Elena continued insisting that the arrangement was only nominal 184 186.

Appearance

  • Human form: Short blond hair and an initially thin, forlorn appearance. Kotone recalls that he was “skin and bones” when they met; his build becomes noticeably healthier after receiving regular care 1 75.
  • Sword Weapon Human form: Long swords extend from both hands. A scabbard projects from his forehead, with two long swords emerging toward the back, while most of his head takes on a devil-like appearance 171.
  • Reverted form: His swords and altered head disappear completely, leaving no visible indication that he carries a Devil Heart 171.

Personality

Denji is direct, persistent, and largely unembarrassed about expressing what he wants. He openly pursues friendship with Elena, tells her she is cute, and admits his concern for her without the shyness expected of other boys his age. His willingness to keep talking after the Sword Devil rebuffs him ultimately wins her cooperation 111 112 169.

His early deprivation makes ordinary comforts deeply meaningful. Initially, he hesitates to request more than a slice of bread and regards restaurant food as something he could only dream about. Even after Kotone improves his circumstances, he worries about becoming a burden and tries to conceal both his loneliness and the seriousness of his illness 5 6 17 74 75.

Denji enjoys praise and wants to impress others. He introduces himself to his new class as a capable Devil Hunter who can protect everyone, then eagerly anticipates the popularity that hunting devils might bring. Nevertheless, he recognizes his lack of experience and worries that careless use of his body’s swords could injure himself or others 171 177 181.

Abilities & Skills

Sword Weapon Human Transformation

Denji transforms by pulling off his right hand, exposing a short sword at the wrist and triggering the emergence of his weapon-bearing form 171.

  • Produces long swords from both hands and alters his head into a devil-like form.
  • Causes a brief burst of intense pain as the weapons emerge.
  • Can be reversed, restoring his ordinary appearance and healing the transformation wounds 171.

Enhanced Physical Abilities and Sword Combat

Transformation greatly increases Denji’s physical abilities, allowing him to overwhelm a weaker devil even before receiving substantial combat training 182.

  • Moves faster than the Sausage Devil, which itself exceeds ordinary human speed.
  • Bisects its body with one high-speed strike.
  • Gradually increases his attack speed as he becomes accustomed to his transformed body.
  • Effective use of his power depends on his physical capabilities and mastery, rather than transformation alone 182 183.

Regeneration and Longevity

The Sword Devil’s heart grants Denji extremely powerful self-healing and the longevity associated with Weapon Humans 171.

  • His surgical wound has already healed when he awakens after fusion.
  • Wounds caused by transformation heal when he reverts.
  • Kotone explains that sufficient blood allows a Weapon Human to revive repeatedly, even after severe injuries; this immortality is therefore conditional rather than absolute 109 171.

Communication with the Sword Devil

The Sword Devil retains her consciousness inside Denji and can speak directly into his mind 109 182.

  • Warns him when an apparently defeated opponent is still alive.
  • Explains the Sausage Devil’s regeneration and advises cutting it into small enough pieces to prevent recovery 182.

Languages

  • Japanese: Converses with Kotone and negotiates with the Sword Devil in Japanese 111.
  • Russian: Learns basic vocabulary and expressions from Elena; later understands and relays her Russian comments to classmates 112 184.

Equipment / Items

  • Mobile phone: Given to him by Kotone, with Kotone’s number already saved for calls about money, emergencies, or other needs 10.
  • Public Safety identification: Bears Tokyo Public Safety’s stamp and serves as proof of his occupation when classmates question him 184.
  • Television games: Bought by Kotone after moving him into a better home; gaming remains one of their shared activities during later visits 9 60.

Relationships

  • Asaba Kotone — Benefactor, caretaker, and eventual superior at Public Safety. Denji calls him “Big Brother Kotone,” trusts his assurances about the experiments, and chooses to return to Tokyo with him 5 169 174 181.
  • Elena — Former roommate, fellow Weapon Human, classmate, and girlfriend “in name.” She teaches him Russian and accompanies him to Tokyo; Denji openly likes her and worries about her safety 112 169 174 186.
  • Sword Devil — His Devil Heart partner. Denji wins her cooperation through persistence and an offer of blood; after fusion, she provides combat advice from within his mind 111 182.
  • Pochita — Kotone’s devil companion. Unlike their relationship in the original story, Denji and Pochita never develop the same close bond or contract, and Pochita does not become his heart 2 75.
  • Kirisū Yuki — Public Safety official who verifies his Sword Weapon Human identity before his service as a Devil Hunter 179 180.
  • Parents — Both deceased. His mother’s heart disease appears hereditary; his abusive father leaves him with an enormous debt after Denji kills him in self-defense 1 2 75.
