Power Progression
Makima has no documented numbered realm or level. Her recorded development concerns surveillance coverage and a life-linking contract.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Innate control ability | 102 103 | Arrives in the Human World with the ability to control beings she considers inferior; has not yet accumulated the additional resources Kotone associates with her original-story counterpart. |
| Tokyo-area surveillance | 106 | Uses controlled small animals to follow Kotone and overhear conversations. Kotone estimates her listening coverage at most of Tokyo. |
| Near-nationwide surveillance | 221 | Her controlled animals are distributed throughout Tokyo and across Japan, bringing almost the entire country within listening range. |
| Shared-life contract with Kotone | 240 | Links her life and death to Kotone’s and grants him her control ability. His ability to revive as a Weapon Human is intended to prevent her permanent death. |
Appearance
- Hair: Long and red, initially worn loose 102.
- Eyes: Golden, with concentric rings—the principal visible distinction between her and an ordinary human 102 218.
- Expression: Usually impassive; her first slight smile strikes Kotone as eerie 102.
- Initial clothing: A simple white dress when encountered outside the Moscow pet shop 102.
- Physical development: Grows taller and develops a more mature figure while living with Kotone. The narration distinguishes her ability to grow from aging into old age 141.
- Other clothing: Wears a school uniform during her student assignments and chooses a white bikini with a sun hat for the beach trip 142 157.
Personality
Makima initially knows little about human customs but is openly interested in learning. She studies stories, observes Kotone’s household routines, and asks him to explain the ideas behind what she reads. Her interest in family develops through this exposure rather than beginning as a fully formed ambition 103 104 105.
Her outward lack of emotion does not mean she is indifferent. Watching the Angel Devil and Karana together makes her yearn for an equal family relationship. She also prefers humans to devils and accepts Devil Hunting as a reasonable response to devils harming people 103 104 221.
Possessiveness remains central to her behavior. She issues “house rules,” monitors Kotone through animals, calls him her property, and reacts jealously to perceived rivals. Nevertheless, she can adjust her conduct: after abandoning her hunt for Pochita, she deliberately changes a command into a request 105 106 112 134 142.
Her attachment to her family eventually becomes a reason to protect humanity. When discussing the Nostradamus Prophecy, she explains that she does not want humans—especially her family—to die 164.
Abilities & Skills
Control
Makima can control beings she considers beneath herself. Her judgment matters, but the narration rejects the idea that arbitrary confidence makes her omnipotent: she believes she must defeat Pochita before she can control him 102.
- Chain manifestation: Fires chains from her fingertip to seize control of targets, including the Loneliness Fiend and Pingcui 114 134.
- Behavioral domination: Makes the Loneliness Fiend crawl and bark like a dog; forces Pingcui to bark while standing motionless 114 134.
- Devil suppression: Controls the Gym Class Devils to end the students’ forced running 154.
- Battlefield diversion: During the prophecy crisis, makes invading devils fight one another, giving fleeing humans respite 244.
- Limits: Cannot control Kotone when they become family because she does not regard him as inferior. Her control alone is also insufficient to affect the Death Devil 104 250.
Animal Surveillance
Makima controls small animals and listens through their ears 106.
- Uses birds to follow Kotone and monitor his conversations 106.
- Provides precise locations of devils through her surveillance network 221.
- Detects the Gym Class Devils’ nighttime attack early enough for Kotone’s group to intervene before any student dies 154.
- Cannot see through the animals; Kotone’s movements into the Kamui Dimension can therefore escape her notice 109.
- Expands her network from the Tokyo area to almost all of Japan 106 221.
Enhanced Sense of Smell
Makima habitually identifies beings by scent rather than sight 102 112.
- Detects Pochita’s lingering scent on Kotone even while Pochita is hidden in the Kamui Dimension 102.
- Recognizes that Kotone is not an ordinary human and later identifies the Gun Devil’s heart within him 102 112.
- Notices unfamiliar human and devil scents on Kotone’s clothes 119.
- Can use her eyes normally; her reliance on smell is a habit, not a visual impairment 112.
Physiology and Blood Recovery
- Does not require sleep, but chooses to sleep beside Kotone because she wants to live like a human 105.
- Has a body described as humanlike in fragility apart from her control power; a kitchen knife seriously wounds her hands 105.
- Heals those wounds after drinking a small quantity of Kotone’s special blood. She stops once sufficiently recovered 105.
Shared-Life Contract
Before the Nostradamus Prophecy, Makima accepts a contract that links her life and death with Kotone’s while giving him access to her control ability 240.
- The completed contract creates a two-way connection between their lives 240.
- Kotone intends to protect her identity and continued existence through his own revivable Weapon Human body, rather than risk her dying and returning as a different Control Devil 240.
- The precise strength of Kotone’s borrowed control ability is initially uncertain 240.
Languages and Learning
- Converses with Kotone in Japanese and demonstrably understands Chinese 102 135.
- Learns human customs through books, explanations, and direct observation 103 104 105.
- Initially lacks practical domestic experience; her first attempt at breakfast leaves both the kitchen and her hands in poor condition 105 106.
History
Hunting Chainsaw Man
In Hell, Makima joined the other three Horsemen in attempting to eliminate Chainsaw Man. She explains that he killed her followers, killed his own followers, and could erase devils from existence by eating them. Their repeated efforts failed, and Chainsaw Man eventually disappeared into the Human World 103 112.
Kotone’s prior knowledge makes him determined to find the Control Devil before Japan’s cabinet does. He believes the cabinet shaped the original-story Makima into an extremist and wants to prevent that outcome in this timeline 51 102.
Meeting Kotone in Moscow
Kotone locates Makima through the Catalogue and finds her outside a Moscow pet shop, staring at a husky. She directly asks him for somewhere to live, gives her name as Makima, and accepts his offer to buy the dog 102.
She has already detected Chainsaw Man’s scent on him. When she reveals that she wants to kill the Chainsaw Devil, Kotone resolves to keep Pochita concealed in the Kamui Dimension 102.
Learning About Family
Kotone teaches Makima about Devil Hunters, money, stories, and everyday human behavior. After she becomes interested in family relationships, he takes her to observe the Angel Devil living peacefully with Karana. Makima does not attempt to control Angel; instead, she studies their happiness and expresses a desire for the same equality 103 104.
Kotone offers to become her family. She accepts, explicitly stating that she neither wants nor is able to control him. Their shared home becomes the setting for her experiments with reading, cooking, sleeping, and household rules 104 105.
Reconciliation with Pochita
At the Soviet experimental base, Kotone explains that Chainsaw Man’s seemingly senseless killings were connected to his inability to embrace others safely. Makima admits that she no longer wants to hunt him: her own dream has been fulfilled, and she no longer sees a reason to endanger herself 112.
Their subsequent meeting is peaceful. Makima recognizes Pochita as Chainsaw Man’s heart and warns that the other Horsemen may still pursue him. Later, she holds Pochita herself and acknowledges how simple his wish for an embrace really is 112 120.
Public Safety and School Assignments
Makima accompanies Kotone on the Loneliness Fiend investigation and captures the fiend through control. Kotone keeps the nature of her ability concealed from civilians to avoid attracting government attention 112 114.
When Kotone organizes Special Division for Devil Affairs 1, he names Makima as his intended vice-captain. She later joins him and Reze at Sakuradai High School to respond to incidents predicted by the Future Devil. Their intervention against the Gym Class Devils ends without student deaths 115 141 154.
She subsequently accompanies Kotone undercover at Imperial High School. There, Asa Mitaka learns from Yoru that Makima is the Control Devil and Yoru’s younger sister; Makima confirms her identity 188 218.
Nostradamus Prophecy and Aftermath
Makima asks Kotone to help prevent the prophecy’s predicted extinction of humanity. When the crisis approaches, she chooses to accompany him rather than enter an air-raid shelter and accepts their shared-life contract 164 240.
During the catastrophe, she controls devils to turn them against one another. After Kotone secures a month’s reprieve from Death, Makima recognizes that his successful intervention used something beyond her control power alone 244 250.
In the epilogue, she works alongside Kotone and his allies to maintain local peace amid conflict between humans and Half-Humans. She also discovers that she can have a child with Kotone, concluding that humans and devils are not reproductively isolated 261.
Relationships
- Asaba Kotone — Her chosen family and most important attachment. Their relationship develops from shelter and instruction into intimacy and a shared-life contract. They disagree over which of them should count as the older sibling 104 112 204 240.
- Pochita / Chainsaw Man — Former enemy whom she pursued from Hell. She abandons the hunt after finding a family and learning about his wish for an embrace 103 112 120.
- Reze — Colleague, housemate, and rival for Kotone’s attention. Their first meeting produces jealousy and bickering, but they subsequently live and undertake school assignments together 115 141 142.
- Angel Devil — A devil she already knew from Hell. His relationship with Karana becomes Makima’s first direct example of a happy human–devil family 104.
- Pingcui — A household newcomer whom Makima controls after being examined by her. Makima demands a kiss from Kotone before releasing her 134 135.
- Asa Mitaka — Schoolmate and fellow Devil Hunter Club member. Makima confirms her devil identity to Asa despite Yoru’s warnings about her 218 224.
- Yoru / War Devil — Older sister and fellow Horseman. Yoru considers Makima dangerous and warns Asa that she could be controlled 218.
- Kiga / Famine Devil — Fellow Horsewoman involved in opposing the prophecy. Together, they recognize both Death’s superior position and the unusual nature of Kotone’s intervention 164 250.
- Death Devil — Fellow Horsewoman who deliberately provokes Makima by embracing Kotone during their post-crisis meeting 250.
Possessions
- Siberian husky — Bought by Kotone after he finds Makima admiring it through a pet-shop window 102.
- Books — Her main early resource for learning human society, family behavior, and romantic vocabulary 103 104 105.
Trivia
- After she names herself, her Catalogue entry changes from Control Devil to Makima 102.
- The narration connects her name to “mama”: removing “ki” from “Makima” leaves “mama,” linking her fondness for humans with her instinct to control 102.
- Her affection reaches 50% and unlocks Santa Claus’s Catalogue entry. Later documented milestones are 60%, 70%, and 80%; the associated Constitution rewards go to Kotone, not Makima 109 112 120 141.
